NFL 2012: Lots of General Managers Tracking For Trouble By January
Eventually, the blame moves up the ranks. A lot of bad teams this year have coaches in their first or second year with the organization. The problems pre-date them. When you look over the landscape of the league, it looks like it could be the men who hire them facing a more tenuous offseason-men who can no longer scape goat coaches because they have had opportunities themselves.
Last year, we saw the regime change in St. Louis after a dreadful stretch of years, as they went to Jeff Fisher. Oakland had the turnover in management following Al Davis’ death, and Indianapolis went a different direction after a long successful period with Bill Polian came to a crashing halt.
We should see more changes than those this offseason. Among the candidates for GM’s, presidents and other key decision makers (regardless of title) who could find themselves in trouble:
1. Marty Hurney, Carolina. Hurney survived when John Fox did not, but has continued to make some unusual decisions (devoting lots of money to running back, kicker, and Charles Johnson, for example). He’s had two more years with his next hire, Ron Rivera, but could be facing pressure if they don’t improve soon.
2. Mike Holmgren, Cleveland. The new owner comes in this week. Holmgren’s tenure doesn’t exactly scream “retain me”. He’s a strong personality and a big name, but Jimmy Haslem will likely want someone else.
3. Gene Smith, Jacksonville. The Jaguars stink, I’m not sure there needs to be any more explanation than that. Smith is a holdover, and new owner Shahid Khan has been patient, so far, but Smith is likely living on borrowed time. Blaine Gabbert better start looking like a starting caliber quarterback soon.
4. A.J. Smith, San Diego. Right now, they are 3-2. They also play Denver this week, and in a season where the Broncos had a way tougher schedule (thanks, Tebow for getting them New England and Houston), they’ve played those games, and can already catch the Chargers. How many 8-8 type seasons of just missing the playoffs can Smith and Turner survive? It’s seems they have to be a package deal at this point, and there were grumblings last offseason.
5. Jeff Ireland, Miami. The heat is off a little with Miami playing competitively with rookie Ryan Tannehill, and if the Dolphins continue to improve he’ll be an afterthought on the GM hit parade. He was among the hottest of seats coming in, though, so he’s not that far from getting right back on it and turning back into the number one A-hole in the state.
6. Buddy Nix, Buffalo. He’s not young, and he’s been there for four more years of non-playoffs, and the moves this offseason don’t appear to be working so far. He is younger than the owner, though, so he’s probably okay.
7. Mike Tannenbaum, New York Jets. Jason McIntyre has been banging the Tannenbaum drum for a while, but the roster has no doubt gone backwards in recent years. No longer can any old quarterback come in and have team success. The massive star injuries, most notably Darrelle Revis, may provide an excuse.
8. Scott Pioli, Kansas City. There’s no indication that Clark Hunt is unhappy with Pioli (there are even rumors of an extension), but his local popularity couldn’t be any lower. A group of fans even purchased a sign to fly over the stadium on Sunday asking for Pioli to be fired. He’s probably safe for 2012 no matter what happens, but the tide has decidedly turned in KC.
Stories about his managerial style continue to come out in the press, and he tied himself to Matt Cassel, season after season, and the fan base is done with it. His draft picks haven’t exactly been booms, either. He might survive year four, but the honeymoon is most assuredly over. Winning cures all, but he may have to do that by early next year (and with a different quarterback ready to succeed right away) or the din will become louder.

Holmgren will have a quiet retirement party and receive a team-themed watch. Something classy, like a gold-plated Timex
October 12th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
Without Mayhew, this list is illegitimate Mr. Lisk.
October 12th, 2012 at 2:34 PM
I enjoyed this piece, and have nothing to add.
October 12th, 2012 at 2:36 PM
Oooh, a cliffhanger.
October 12th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
It saddens me that Mickey Loomis and Jerry Jones made no appearance on this list.
/ Jerrah firing himself would be the greatest thing in the world
October 12th, 2012 at 2:39 PM
Pioli looks a little like Ray Nitschke, minus the football talent.
October 12th, 2012 at 2:40 PM
I hope AJ Smith and Norv Turner are in the league forever and ever and ever and ever.
October 12th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
How is Pioli’s seat not hotter? His first big move was giving $60M to a guy who has all but proven he’s not capable to be a starter in the NFL. Add that he doesn’t have a capable back-up or a replacement in grooming and I just don’t see why there isn’t more heat on him.
Charles and Berry have worked, so I guess he has that going for him.

Gene Smith’s a goner.
October 12th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
He’s had a little trouble on the d-line as well.
October 12th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
Tebowy-goodness spreads far beyond his physical reach.
Bring back Martyball!
/there IS a gleam’d
October 12th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
Never ever should have gotten rid of Mangini.
October 12th, 2012 at 2:46 PM
he’s started every game so he’s clearly starting caliber.

Was he responsible for Glenn Dorsey or was that the guy right before him?
October 12th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
I think that was Peterson’s gift on his way out.
Pioli had Tyson Jackson (at #3 overall!!) as his first order of business, I believe…after securing Matt Cassell, of course.
October 12th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
Dorsey is a massive bust but does he count as a GM mistake? That guy seemed like a sure thing coming out of LSU
October 12th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
I was thinking the same, but the more I think about it, he’s hamstrung by Woody Johnson.
October 12th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
Ricky Stanzi is not capable of playing QB in the NFL (to prove I’m not a complete homer) but I guess you have to give Pioli credit on Moeaki. He’s a pretty good NFL tight end. Especially with the way teams are starting to make that a bigger part of the offense these days.
Even outside of his player choices, his coaching hires are complete jokes. Haley, who he didn’t even give full backing to, was at war with the players all the time. Then he brings in a retread who failed with the Browns. Again, I am not quite sure how Pioli could possibly get an extension. Only thing he should be signing is a severance package.
October 12th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
Romeo, oh, Romeo. Pioli tried to unite the fans and he players with that one. Players liked him in the wake of the Haley fiasco and fans liked him because the record got better when Haley left but you’re right. That was a terrible move by the GM. Bring in somebody good and Romeo would have been forgotten by week 2.
October 12th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
Then again, this formula worked in New England…
October 12th, 2012 at 2:58 PM
Dorsey is a massive bust but does he count as a GM mistake? That guy seemed like a sure thing coming out of LSU Stark
You are not allowed to use hindsight here.
but I guess you have to give Pioli credit on Moeaki. SC
He’s caught nine passes in the past two years.
/see what I did there?
//I honestly thought he’d be more productive this year.
October 12th, 2012 at 3:02 PM
I’m glad you guys have all the info on the Chiefs the past few years, I forgot pretty much all of this.
/Really didn’t want to remember most
October 12th, 2012 at 3:02 PM
so I guess he has that going for him.
Which is nice.

Dorsey is a massive bust but does he count as a GM mistake?
the boneheaded part was taking a 5 technique that high.
It would have been nice to have taken Clady, and then later in the first round, not taking Branden Albert and taking some other dude.
But that’s hindsight.
October 12th, 2012 at 3:02 PM
Man, to even further the assault on Pioli:
KC’s current offensive coordinator.
October 12th, 2012 at 3:05 PM
Jerrah firing himself would be the greatest thing in the world
I would love to say that Jerry Jones has done a great job of getting out of the way and letting Stephen Jones run the team, but who the fuck is Stephen Jones, exactly, other than the next Jones in line.
They aren’t making as many mistakes, but they still make high profile mistakes. And this year, they brought in 5 low rent free agents, and 1 high dollar free agent. They’re getting bad value on the low rent ones, which means they’re 4/5ths awful.
October 12th, 2012 at 3:06 PM
To be fair that doesn’t always tell the story…I think when Mike McCarthy was hired his 49er offense the year before was dead last or close to it, Cleveland’s offense would suck if Zombie Bill Walsh was coaching them
October 12th, 2012 at 3:06 PM
Anyone stained by the taint of Les Miles should never be considered a sure thing. Especially QBs and WRs.
October 12th, 2012 at 3:06 PM
i agree with this being #7 on the list, but i think the stakes are a bit higher for the franchise whether Tannenbaum stays on or not. if he goes, Rex goes. If he stays, rex stays, but they don’t make any improvements on the team as the same poor talent evaluation is making the decisions in drafting and free agency.
don’t get me wrong, i’d love to see the jets languish in perpetual 2nd or 3rd place in the AFC east, but i think heads roll if they miss the playoffs regardless of the injuries.
October 12th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
if he goes, Rex goes
I don’t think that.
October 12th, 2012 at 3:08 PM
If I could say one thing to Jerrah, it would be: “There is a reason you haven’t been to the Super Bowl since Jimmy and his players departed. Now go look in a mirror.”
October 12th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
Suppose that’s true. KC is 4th in total offense currently. That’s probably as much Jamaal Charles as it is Daboll of course. But hey, I’d have “hand ball off to Charles” written on my playsheet about 7 of every 10 plays too.
October 12th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
no GM worth his salt will come on w/o putting his own guys in place.
October 12th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
I remember Falcons were seriously considering whether to pick Dorsey over Ryan. Whew, dodged that bullet. Plus it was a weird time, lot of black fans didn’t want to pick a white quarterback.
/honestly, you guys have no idea just how racially charged the whole Michael Vick thing was here
October 12th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
no GM worth his salt will come on w/o putting his own guys in place.
I’m sure it’s happened several times in recent memory, even though I can’t think of an instance. But I think Woody Johnson is big on Rex, no?
October 12th, 2012 at 3:15 PM
The Bears have reportedly begun talking to Lovie about an extension when he’s not Emery’s guy and that’s probably the right play…not saying you’re not right most of the time but it can work
October 12th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
it has happened, but it’s hardly worked out. Mangini and Holmgren in cleveland most recently i think.
it’s not a recipe for success.
October 12th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
fire the bills
October 12th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
They should have just drafted the white Mike Vick.
October 12th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
Why the assumption Woody would hire a GM ‘worth his salt’?
October 12th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
racially charged? in Atlanta?
/shocked face
October 12th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
Woody Johnson hires ringleaders and circus clowns. He doesn’t really care about winning
October 12th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
More teams should hire GMs along the lines of Jim Finks. He did a great job with New Orleans in the mid- to late ’80s. His one drawback is that he did not insist that Mora hire an OC with a working knowledge of the passing offense.
/ Carl Smith, burn in hell
October 12th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
it can work from time to time, and i’m sure there’s a GM out there who can actually evaluate players and identify starting calibre players the jets should acquire to pair with Rex’s scheme and they live happily ever after.
but normally the guys who get the job with the condition they keep the head coach are either just happy to have a GM job or they will always be hamstrung by the owner in not being able to implement their own system.
October 12th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
Just last year in Chicago. New GM, but Lovie is still the coach.
October 12th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
Fun Fact: Matt Millen at one point was the 2nd highest paid GM in the NFL.
October 12th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
There are still black fans that constantly call sports radio stations here to complain that Falcons should have taken Vick back on the team after he got out of jail. Some don’t like Ryan simply because he is white.
October 12th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
fire the Two Live Stews
October 12th, 2012 at 3:37 PM
but what if matt ryan… was black?
/reverse a time to kill’d
October 12th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
Not sure if it’s sarcastic, but they just did. It’s so weird. They’ve really fallen on hard time. This is roughly how their career has gone:
weekend night show
weekend day show
weeknight show
Mid-morning show
Afternoon drive time and national syndication deal along with reg. appearance on ESPN
Lose syndication and ESPN deal and move to mid morning again
cut back show hour from 4 to 2
And Finally, fired.
October 12th, 2012 at 4:37 PM
Kaiser, i had no clue. Ha!
October 22nd, 2012 at 9:53 AM
and No. 1 has been fired! Nice job, Lisk.
