Raul Ibanez Home Run Calls: John Sterling Audio That is Goose Bump-Inducing
All, Baseball, Media Gossip/Musings October 11th. 2012, 9:53am
John Sterling, take a bow: Your home run calls last night in the Yankees thrilling victory were amazing. I preferred his call on the 9th inning homer to the 12th inning call, but that’s probably just me. [via WFAN Audio]

Worst baseball play-by-play idiot ever.
Will. Not. Listen.
October 11th, 2012 at 9:57 AM
/shakes uncontrollably while sounding like a douchebag on the radio
//no really, he shakes his body when he does the “yankees win, theeeeeeee yankees win”
October 11th, 2012 at 9:59 AM
squawk, Sterling is bad but Hawk Harrelson is even worse.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:00 AM
I think eccentrics are acceptable on radio broadcasts of baseball games.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:01 AM
We’ve finally reached the point where people can’t enjoy a moment without having it sponsored. That’s incredibly sad.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:01 AM
I went ahead and fixed that for you, no need to thank or compensate me.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
if you’re eccentric and do a good job, yes. If you mess up calls every night? no.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
I think what makes Sterling the worst is that he is on radio and doesn’t accurately announce the game. “It is high, it is long” for every HR. Ibanez’s HR in the ninth wasn’t “high” or “long”.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
how sad? pet gets hit by car sad or Penn state donations sad?
October 11th, 2012 at 10:03 AM
Never mentions the final score – too busy with his schtick. If you just got in your car, you would have no idea. Classic Sterling.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:03 AM
he is a clown, yes, but the call – excited, roar of crowd, crack of the bat – is awesome. i listened to it 10 times already. had my 18 month old son listen to it. wife (yankees fan, too) enjoyed it
October 11th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
Oh okay. I hate the Yankees so I would never listen to this guy except on a clip like above. So I’ll refine my statement to say that I’m fine with eccentric calls as long as they don’t get in the way.

Suzyn Waldman probably wet herself multiple times in the clubhouse
/vomits
October 11th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
Suzyn Waldman is the worst announcer in sports. Make Hawk Harrelson seem like Vin SCully
October 11th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
Suzyn Waldman probably wet herself multiple times in the clubhouse
/reminds self to call his Yankee-loving dad and do the “RAW-GUH CLEM-INS” bit for the 7,434th time
October 11th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
Still kills me that Hawk Harrelson was a GM in Major League Baseball in my lifetime.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
agrees with cockbox.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
Best baseball call to end a game was Game 6, 1991 World Series as Kirby Puckett ended the game with a blast.
“And we’ll see you tomorrow night!”
/ Jack Buck

She’s probably drier than Death Valley down there.
/vomits more

Vomit.

I preferred when Joe Buck did it last year.

OT…im doing training for this new fidelity invt shit and im almost 100% positive it’s scott van pelt’s voice.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
Right guy, wrong game.
“I do not believe….what I just saw.”
My personal favorite is Scully’s call of Game 6 in ’86.
“Little roller up along first…BEHIND THE BAG”
October 11th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
Its possible that our brains gave developed so visually now that radio guys ‘painting a picture’ doesnt matter as much. So all hr being high and long is no biggie
October 11th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
Is wright still uh…. comedy-ing?
October 11th, 2012 at 10:22 AM
Indeed. Loved Puck as a kid. Too bad he was a woman-beating asshole.

October 11th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
Which game was that?
October 11th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
Sterling is wretched. Ted William’s cryogenically frozen head that’s sitting in that lobster pot could provide a better call. He’s inaccurate and feeble. There are hundreds of announcers in MLB/MiLB that are better at their jobs than him. He’s an institution only to tired local media guys that hang on way to long. He’s dogshit.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
this guy can choke on a bag of dicks. he is insufferable.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
Hawk Harrelson is worthy of the title hero
October 11th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
The Kirk Gibson game in ’88.
/I think
October 11th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
By the way, thanks for the baseball posts TBL. Love seeing that.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
I don’t have the volume cranked to 11, but I never heard the bat.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
Found a picture of Spence.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
Yeah, it was actually the radio call IIRC. I was watching the game but Buck’s radio call is what I always remember. Think Scully had the TV.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
Vin Scully nailed it for the Game 6 and Game 7 in 86. Both calls are transcendent.
I’ve heard a ton of Scully and to be honest, it pains me to hear him now. He’s lost his fastball. He was the best and he seems a bit all over the place. Some of that is always do to his simulcasts in the LA market, I realize. His nuance for the game is still great but the broadcasts are getting clumsy.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
surprisingly close…wow. only ive got a full beard and brown hair.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
I think you’re right, but given his body of work, I’m cool with giving him a pass. I’d still rather hear him than many play-by-play guys out there.
/also, pours one out for Harry Kalas
October 11th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
Fuck off.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
Yeah I thought it was actually fairly close, especially the facial expression and eyes.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
The game (5?) where Gibson took Gossage deep was a great call. There’s a great NFL Films equivalent of that game, MLB having the audio of Billy Williams chatting with Gossage before that at bat. Gossage is like “I got him” and then Gibson hauls off on him
October 11th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
Dude’s fucking wailing on that mandolin, too.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
and I thought you were cool Ritty
October 11th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
That’s no language for a new parent.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
im in awe of his rasgueado.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
I’m not certain that’s Spencer. Spencer’s mandolin has a Creed sticker slapped up on it. I don’t see that sticker there.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
are you fucking kidding me with that shit? id never put ANY sticker on my guitar. that’s fucking sacrilege bro, and i wont stand for it.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
The drummer for Los Lobos plays Jarana huasteca on some songs and was busting out an insane rasgueado on Tuesday. Was stunning.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
oh man…i bet it was. a good rasgueado by someone who knows what they’re doing gives me goosebumps.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Granted he looks like an old Butters height Mexican version of Tom Morello (might be Mexican also) so it was kind of disturbing. Was like watching an old Oompa Loompa rock out.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
I came to find out if the Yankee game beat Modern Family in the TV ratings…
October 11th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
in a similar vein…kinda how i feel about the time i saw this badass indian guitarist debashish bhattacharya. just didn’t expect to see a guitar juggernaut when i heard the dude give a lecture before playing.
October 11th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
Los lobos are great. La pistola y el corazon ftw
