Beano Cook: RIP. Dead at 81
Beano Cook, the legendary college football analyst at ESPN, has died at the age of 81 according to Ivan Maisel.
I am very sorry to tell you that Beano Cook died in his sleep. He was 81. If you love college football, you will miss him.
— Ivan Maisel (@Ivan_Maisel) October 11, 2012
As a huge fan of Cook for years, this is devastating. He was college football. More later.

RIP Beano

That man could tell some stories.
Football awards are easy this year. Heisman now goes to Powlus and obligatory National Championship to the retiring Tom Osbourne.
October 11th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
/pours out two Powlus Heismans

grumpiness is best
October 11th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
And during a really good Notre Dame season to boot…the universe is cold and uncaring
October 11th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
They should just give him Reggie Bush’s vacated one.
RIP Beano
October 11th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
Why are you sorry?
October 11th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
Beano sure did love him some No-truh Dame.
October 11th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
Also, is this the post where we talk about Tiger thumping Rory or Dale Earnhardt being out two races with a concussion? I assume those are in the ‘hopper’, right?
October 11th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
damn oh heel, did maisel shot in your rice krispies?
i feel bad that beano cook died. i am telling you this while feeling bad
October 11th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
RIP the last decent Pitt graduate
October 11th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
I loved the way he said No-truh Dame, but his Penn State and Army football stories were what stand out to me. Hate losing old people. Like, really old people.

He is a folk hero in West By God for predicting WVU would have an undefeated season in 1988.
October 11th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
shit, shot, half a dozen of one, sex of the other
October 11th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
Anyone else shocked that he was only 81?
October 11th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
Beano could remember a game in 1957 like he just watched it yesterday.
Legend.
October 11th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
If there’s a God, no…although, as previously stated, Beano going in a year where ND looks BCS good might further prove there isn’t
October 11th, 2012 at 12:20 PM
Tiger thumping Rory
is that the prime minister’s cup?
October 11th, 2012 at 12:20 PM
RIP the last decent Pitt graduate
What did Curtis Martin ever do to you?
October 11th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
I forget the whole story but his joke with Bowie Kuhn about the hostages is legendary. At least he lived a full life and went in his sleep. College football lost a good one today.
October 11th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
email me your address and it’s on its way. (Apple doesn’t do email cards anymore).

October 11th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
RIP Beano AKA the original old curmudgeon yelling on ESPN about college football.
October 11th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
His “haven’t they suffered enough” line about Iranian hostages getting free baseball tickets will never stop being funny.
October 11th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
Well, the tournament’s in Turkey, so it probably has something to do with prison rape.
October 11th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
Not saying it isn’t sad news, but what does Ivan have to be “very sorry” about? Clumsy wording, that’s all.
October 11th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
Like, really old people.
Anyone else shocked that he was only 81?
i was shocked that romney is 64. too old to be prez
October 11th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
Absolutely.
I was out with some friends in Pittsburgh when I was in college in the early 90′s and we saw Beano out having dinner. He seemed ancient, even then.
October 11th, 2012 at 12:23 PM

oh, yeah, the appearance fee cup
October 11th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
Honestly have no clue in hell what you’re talking about. You’ve never heard someone prefacing bad news with “I’m very sorry”?
October 11th, 2012 at 12:25 PM
Plus Beano was a weekly contributor to Maisel’s radio show.
October 11th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
what now?
October 11th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
People passing away is a sad event, and it’s sad news. He’s telling people he’s sorry for having to break the bad news that someone people loved passed away. Did I really have to explain that?

October 11th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
Too bad. Enjoyed him on the college football podcast with Maisel. Amazing how Cook could recall historical stuff.
October 11th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
Soccer has a saying “I’m very sorry to say …”
October 11th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
I’ll never forgive him for changing his vote from PSU to Nebraska in 1994.

October 11th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
Oddly, he did so after taking a shower.
October 11th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
this reminds me that one of the coolest things about roadtrips in sec country is AM radio on saturdays
October 11th, 2012 at 12:57 PM
He was college football.
Not really.
October 11th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
Except that even in SEC country, most of the teams’ games are on FM radio these days.
October 11th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
Yeah jay its been at least half a decade since i was there maybe more
October 11th, 2012 at 1:07 PM
Sad. like for real sad
October 11th, 2012 at 1:28 PM
I really can’t believe how many of you magoos actually liked Beano Cook. I used to hate seeing that guy on TV, even 30 years ago.
I hope you all carry your allegiances over to Frank DeFord now. He’s busy trying to explain sports to NPR nerds once a week, while simultaneously showing off his grandiloquence.
October 11th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
Deford looks like no other creature
October 11th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
Like granpa velociraptor
October 11th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
Damn. R.I.P.
