SEC Replacements: Ten Coaches Who Could Find Jobs in the SEC Next Season
The SEC will have one position available this winter. It could be as many as four. We know Arkansas won’t retain John L. Smith. Barring a turn around, it’s hard to see Kentucky keeping Joker Phillips. Though the Vols have improved, Derek Dooley may emerge from a brutal three-game stretch 3-5. With Auburn terrible in year four, Gene Chizik might want to start showing urgency. If those coaches depart this offseason, here are ten candidates to replace them.
Charlie Strong [Louisville] Strong will be the first call for multiple schools. He’s an SEC-caliber coach and he has extensive SEC experience from his time at Florida. The trouble is he’s loyal to Louisville. He has a loaded team returning next season. He also gets paid well for a Big East coach, earning nearly $3 million per year with bonuses. He’s a possibility for the future, Big East uncertainty will be used against him in recruiting, but it may be hard to pry him for 2013.
Gus Malzahn [Arkansas State] Malzahn is well-liked in his home state. He has a track record of success as a coordinator at Auburn. His Arkansas State team has started off 3-3, but had to play both Oregon and Nebraska. The Red Wolves’ offense ranks in the Top 40 in yards per play. Malzahn would be a popular candidate. Few at Arkansas State would begrudge him moving on up to Fayetteville.
Bobby Petrino [Unemployed] Petrino is an unsavory personality. He has professional baggage. He’s also had an unquestionable run of success at a backwater program in the SEC, without taking any NCAA heat. Could Kentucky, who hired Calipari, really take a moral stand against hiring him? This would not be the first time he has been a candidate at Auburn…
Kirby Smart [Alabama - DC] It is a surprise Smart has not received a head coaching job already. He has won a Broyles award. He coordinated one of college football’s best historical defenses last season. The issue for him is he’s only 36 and he’s making good money with a stable gig at Alabama. Is Tennessee or Arkansas the right opportunity? Or, does Smart hang around a few years to see if Alabama or his alma-mater Georgia opens up? Saban is in his sixth-year at Alabama. That is the longest he has stayed at any head coaching job.
Sonny Dykes [Louisiana Tech] Dykes is the latest Leach disciple to begin making a name for himself. He went 8-5 last year, with one-score losses at Southern Miss, vs. Houston, at Mississippi State (overtime) and to TCU in the Poinsettia Bowl. This year, his bulldogs are 5-0 with two AQ conference scalps and another chance against Texas A&M. Dykes, the son of longtime coach Spike Dykes, would have made tremendous sense at Texas Tech, though it appears Tuberville has some life left. He won’t be at Louisiana Tech for long.
Mario Cristobal [FIU] Cristobal built the Golden Panthers from nothing (program has not had enough money in recent years to fund the band and cheerleading) into a consecutive bowl team the past two years. He turned down Rutgers last winter. A 1-5 start in 2012 has dulled his glimmer a bit since. He knows how to construct a program. He has recruiting ties in South Florida. This would seem way more likely if he was 5-1 right now though.
Garrick McGee [UAB] He would be a popular choice within the Arkansas program, serving as offensive coordinator under Petrino before taking the UAB job this season. He’s off to a 1-4 start with the Blazers, though he inherited an awful team and did have them competing against Ohio State in the horseshoe. He would have made much more sense last April. Now, as the season turns sour, Jeff Long may want to move in a different direction.
Todd Monken [Oklahoma State - OC] Monken is one of those hot assistants ADs like to ogle and make eyes at. He’s done very well continuing Holgorsen’s work at Oklahoma State. He has NFL experience with the Jaguars. He was also LSU’s passing game coordinator, when such a thing existed. He should be in line for a head job after this season.
Mark Hudspeth [Louisiana-Lafayette] Hudspeth has a great track record as a head coach. He led North Alabama to five 10-win seasons in six years at Division II. He joined Dan Mullen’s staff at Mississippi State. He won nine games last year with the Ragin Cajuns and is now off to a 4-1 start. He could be the next to follow Hugh Freeze from the Sun Belt to the SEC.
Phillip Fulmer [Unemployed] Fulmer is a longshot. But, he did not want to leave Tennessee when he was forced out in 2008. He’s desperate to get back into coaching at a reasonably high-level and has expressed interest in Louisville, Connecticut, Arkansas and basically any conceivable job that has come available. He could have a few more years left at 62…

Has it really been since 2008 that Fat Phil was fired from Tennessee?
October 10th, 2012 at 3:26 PM
actually, they probably would. ASU has quite the Napoleon complex in most things regarding Razorbacks athletics.

A horseshoe is different than the Horseshoe

Has it really been since 2008 that Fat Phil was fired from Tennessee?
Indeed. In that span, he has been mentioned for KU’s job. Twice. I’m not sure what KU did to anyone.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:28 PM

Other than Lisk, the staff at TBL Enterprises is consistently ignorant of what happens west of the Mississippi River. Of course, ASU fans would be pissed.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
oh, and piss off for that one.
as far as Smart and McGee go, the only thing that worries me a little bit about both of them is the possibility that they were/are nothing more than “Yes” men for the head coaches they have or are currently working under.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
Never understood why Phil was let go
October 10th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
The KU administration certainly has an affinity for obese men leading their football program.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
Gene Chizik has all of this year, and all of next year.
/ season ticket holder
October 10th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
Actually, they play Texas A&M.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
Not to sound TOO racist, but that’s Barry Bonds.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:35 PM
Htown, didn’t get to say this earlier, but congratulations on the adoption, and best to all of you.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:35 PM
Surprised you didn’t mention Paul Rhoads with his ties to Auburn. And supposedly there’s chatter among Arkansas fans of getting him down there. No idea if there’s any validity to that.
I’m skeptical he’d leave but the speculation is out there.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
How does the Arkansas administration feel about Malzahn. I don’t really remember the details, just that he was part of the whole shitshow with Mustain a few years ago.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
Good line…though I haven’t figured out whether it’s the coordinator position that no longer exists, or the passing game itself.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:37 PM
If you’re a young up and coming coach, like these guys in this post, do you want an SEC job right now? LSU, Bama, Florida, and SC are all gonna be really good for a long time. Might be a better career move to go to an ACC school or a Big Ten school where you have a chance to make an immediate impact.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:37 PM
Hope Charlie moves so James Quick goes to OSU.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:37 PM
Thanks Scouser.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
Cannot imagine why OSU fans are universally hated.

Sorry, black head coaches in the SEC are already over their quota.

Also, needs more Willie Taggart. That guy may be the best coach in a second-tier conference today.

Being that we Buckeyes love extraneous, long “The”s, we refer to it as Theee The Horseshoe.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
His 10-year $20 million contract extension at Iowa State has limited a lot of the speculation.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
It’s Les Miles’s sense of self-awareness and survival that no longer exists.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
What are the chances of Aggie breaking into that group?
The Old Ball Coach has to be closing in on 70, no?
October 10th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
Well, there’s that. If memory serves the buyout is $750K for each year left on the deal, which goes through 2021. But hey, everything’s negotiable, right?

October 10th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
Don’t know about SC. Aggies? Nien.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
I think they could. A lot of people thought them moving to the SEC was dumb, but I like. Now, if a texas hs kid wants to go play in the SEC, he can go to aTm instead of bama, florida, or lsu. Plus, I like their new coach.
However, I don’t think Tenn can make that jump anytime soon.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:47 PM

Why?
October 10th, 2012 at 3:47 PM

That and he is from Iowa. He sounds happy where he is.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
How come Bob Stoops isn’t on this list?
October 10th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
That abbreviation really needs to be changed.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
anyone that had anything to do with that mess is gone now.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
Anyone else hoping that Arkansas fan girl ends up on Tosh.O? That would be spectacular.
/Best.WebRedemption.Ever.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:51 PM
They’re at a recruiting disadvantage. I think they need a big name established coach to overcome that. Not easy to do. Then again, I said a few weeks ago that I thought Andrew Maxwell at MSU was going to be good. So, what do I know? Not much.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:52 PM
Bullshit
October 10th, 2012 at 3:52 PM
Notre Dame isn’t in the SEC
October 10th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Yet
October 10th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Why isn’t Luke Fickell on this list?
October 10th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
Proper nouns, yo. Elementary school shit. A copy editor would have caught it.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
OK thanks
October 10th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
Agree with all of this.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
So, what do I know? Not much.
I agree with this. Thought you were going another direction. Throughout the 8+ years of underachievement, they’ve still had 1st round talent nearly every year (Mayo, Meachem, Witten, Foster, etc). Last 2 they haven’t. This year you can say they have 4-5 easily going in first 2 rounds if they leave early. I know, wanking motion, they have to win games.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
that was more Right Reverand Houston Nutt-related than Gus Malzahn-related, no?
October 10th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
I thought that was mostly on Houston Nutt, anyway.
\Yep, loooong gone.

Soccer folks have a term for this: the “hot seat.”
October 10th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
Serious question- what is UT’s prime recruiting territory? I know the come into Cincitucky frequently, but haven”t ahd much success there of late.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:58 PM
Please don’t let him leave.
October 10th, 2012 at 3:58 PM
I believe that it was as well. But they way I remember Mustain’s mom caused a big scene and Malzahn left for Tulsa and it was just a huge shitshow. Thought there might have been some lasting issues between the parties.
October 10th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
what is UT’s prime recruiting territory
Heavy in Georgia. More in-state starting with Kiffen’s long tenure (spits). South Carolina and Virginia I’d say have to be the top states. They really are national though. Several come out of Cali and Louisiana
October 10th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
metro-Knoxville.
oh wait…we don’t even have that locked down.
October 10th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
But didn’t he leave because Houston Nutt abandoned his offense after two quarters or sdomething? Basically lured the recruits in by hiring their high school coach (who happened to coach an up-tempo passing game) and then went to three yards and a cloud of dust.
October 10th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
Soccer folks have a term for this: the “hot seat.”
Please explain in great detail what that means.
October 10th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
Like someone else asked why did they boot Fulmer?
October 10th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
Keep in mind that if Chizik is fired, Auburn will hire the worst possible coach, since the new coach needs to be able to the lick the boots of a lot of people in power. If this list is legit, it’s probably Hudspeth.
October 10th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
UT was on the downslope, that’s why they booted Fulmer. Same reason they booted Majors years earlier. They could have done better than Fulmer, but they obviously didn’t.
October 10th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
Take Luke Fickell – please.
October 10th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
Like someone else asked why did they boot Fulmer?
Mounting pressure. The appearance of “weak” recruiting classes. The fact is, Casey Clausen wasn’t bad, but wasn’t bringing a trophy home. The reasons seem to vary depending who you ask. No one differs on the way he was pushed out. That university has handled problems abismally lately.
October 10th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
No Brent Venables?
October 10th, 2012 at 4:11 PM
Thanks

Rose Bowl-bound for the national championship in 2001. then the Georgia Dome happened. fuck that building.
Don’t forget Ainge’s Sr. year. That damn out route from they’re own 20 for a pick-6 ended the SEC Championship in a depressing manner.
October 10th, 2012 at 4:20 PM
yeah, that was depressing, but we weren’t national championship contenders that year. we had a ticket punched to the game in 2001…remember beating Florida at The Swamp last game of the season and all the players had roses? we’d already beaten LSU in the regular season and just had to do it again in the SEC Champ game.
fuck. now I’m sad.
October 10th, 2012 at 4:24 PM
remember beating Florida at The Swamp last game of the season and all the players had roses
Don’t remember that specific detail. I was in like 6th grade. But it was still depressing. Now I’m sad

LSU: the slow spiral back to the days of Curly Hallman begins.
