Iowa High School Decides Running Extra Laps or Sprints is a Form of Corporal Punishment
Des Moines Lincoln High School football coach Tom Mihalovich was recently suspended when it was decided he had violated “school bullying and corporal punishment policies” after he made a sophomore run sprints and laps for saying mean things about the varsity team. From the Des Moines Register:
“Good common sense would indicate we’re past using conditioning and running in a punitive manner,” said Mike Dick, Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union executive director. To use conditioning as punishment is “almost vindictive in nature.”
That’s the point. This is also why Mihalovich is considering a move to coach Sarcastaball.
Corporal punishment, defined as physical force or physical contact made with the intent to harm or cause pain, is illegal in Iowa. But the law provides a specific exemption for “reasonable requests or requirements of a student engaged in activities associated with physical education class or extracurricular athletics.”
That “reasonable requests” clause is defined by “fact-specific, context-specific” inquiries, said Thomas Mayes, an attorney for the Iowa Department of Education.
Running or extra conditioning “could be considered corporal punishment under the Code,” Mayes said, “but there is no bright line that can be drawn between what is reasonable and unreasonable. There is a difference between girls’ sports and boys’ sports, between first grade (physical education) and high school P.E. and recreational athletes versus world-class athletes.”
Without the ability to make kids run, what can coaches do? The only other punishment is to cut playing time. It’s not like any coach has ever been suspended or fired for sitting somebody’s jerk kid, right?

Back in my day, corporal punishment was being paddled by the shop teacher with a sawed off goalie stick that had holes drilled through it to decrease wind resistance.

And congratulations Mike Dick, you have now just ruined any semblance of authority coaches have in Iowa.

Not sure if this was mentioned in the Roundup or not, but for those of you who watched 9.79 last night… did you catch that the IOC guy’s name was Dick Pound?

you say sarcastaball, but in reading on:
The Des Moines schools’ investigation determined that the Lincoln sophomore football player ran at least 20 hill sprints, completed 20 up-down drills, ran two laps around the practice field and did more hill sprints — all in 25 to 30 minutes. The Lincoln athletic trainer said the student was not given a water break.
that’s sounds like maybe the coach was torturing this kid a little bit, because he was mad about those mean things he said.

Yep. I would have taken the spank over being made to run, had that been something they thought of in elementary school. I got a lot of corporal punishment in elementary school, and lots in junior high. After that, though, it was all in school suspensions.

I made the six year olds run to the fence and back (about 80 yards total) on Monday because they were playing grabass and not running the plays that were called due to said grabassing. It wasn’t a big deal. However, at some point I guess using conditioning as punishment could be bad. If you can’t hit them anymore, you need to use something.

kc, the only hole in that punishment and probably most is that it has nothing to do with the crime. your kid doesn;t clean his room, so you take away his tv rights for a day, for example
i mishandle it all the time. it’s too much hard work being creative
October 10th, 2012 at 12:49 PM
Running sprints, hills and laps is awesome for me, but I’m at least getting a breather or a splash of water in there. Not allowing a high school kid either of those things is harsh.
October 10th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
They banned it when I was in 8th grade. If I close my eyes, I can still hear the slight whistle that goalie stick would make. What an impressive idea for a paddle. He kept it hanging above his desk for years after.

I paid $120+ for an MLB.tv subscription this year. But apparantly they have made Postseason.TV something different. If my team was actually involved I’d shell over the $5 bucks, but meh. It’s the principal of the thing.

And I’m wondering if they’re thinking that putting a few games on the MLB Network will force cable companies to make it available on lesser cable packages? Or do they just not care and hope it forces the consumer to move to a higher tier?

There are 4 baseball games on today. Very important ones. Can we discuss that in this post about the show that has its characters drinking cum, or will there be one coming up shortly?

When I was a freshman in HS, i was on one of the best football teams my town had ever seen (in Missouri). We started the season 5-0 and won every game by at least 33 points. In week six, we lost by a point on a last second field goal. Monday, we ran “reminders” (what most people call up downs mixed with sprints) for the entire 2-hour practice while our coach screamed “I wanna win! You better wanna win too!” One kid quit, nobody bitched.
October 10th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
Just the sight of the paddle with the holes in it was deterrent enough. Simpler just to sit down and shut up, than to act up and get hit.

The hole in my punishment is that six year olds don’t get tired from running. They had fun.

For my kids it’s devices, ds, iPad, iPod touch. All but their ds’s are mine anyway, but that gets them. Take away tv from one and let the other watch a new movie, that really makes them feel it. It everything else fails they have to sit by me and do nothing for 10 minutes.

October 10th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
oh yeah, bk, it’s easy taking away things they like. i just know there are behaviorists who say the punishment should relate to the crime
so, what, lock them out of their room? let the mess pile up til they can’t move? take away their clothes and toys that make up the mess?
hard work

Forced exercise, withholding bathroom privileges and paddling to inflict corporal/physical pain as punishment are all forms of corporal punishment used to punish students K-12 for minor infractions, legal and protected by “Teacher Immunity Laws” in 19 U.S. States.
In 2009 KY Football Coach David Stinson faced criminal charges in the Death of a High School Football player made to run laps with teammates in high temperatures as punishment for a poor practice. The Coach was acquitted as the Death was blamed on ADHD medication, but changes to state laws were brought about by this tragic incident. Obesity and inactivity in children is on the rise and many children are dealing with health issues that would put their health and safety in grave danger if forced to exercise as school punishment. Why would schools wish to engage in dangerous activities that put students at risk of injury, put educators careers at risk and taxpayer funded school district assets at risk of lawsuits? Exercise should be done in moderation only with Doctors approval and should never be associated with negative connotations such as Punishment!
Schools must make student safety their top priority. See the truth about School Corporal Punishment, brutally violent injuries from Mandatory Child Abuse Reporters, School teachers, coaches and administrators hitting students K-12 with wooden boards to inflict Pain as Punishment for minor infractions, Illegal in Schools in 31 U.S. States, yet legal with no safety standards to protect schoolchildren in 19 U.S. States at YouTube Video Trailer for Documentary Movie “The Board of Education” by Jared Abrams.
