Heisman 2012 Power Rankings Week Six: Losses Send Podium Candidates Tumbling
Some rough losses have knocked out Aaron Murray and E.J. Manuel. Here’s how the field looks this week.
Geno Smith [West Virginia - QB] Smith is building a substantial lead, now a 1/2 favorite from Bovada. He’s No. 1 overall in passer rating and completion percentage (81.4 percent) despite throwing more than 40 times per game. He has a 24/0 TD/INT ratio and a big win over Texas. He’s your leader, after him it’s sort of a morass.
Braxton Miller [Ohio State - QB] Miller has been efficient enough in the passing game. He has more than 700 yards passing and eight rushing touchdowns through three games. He seems more like a “favorite heading into his junior year” type candidate but has a strong chance to reach the podium. No Big Ten title game this year, but he’ll have the chance to make a closing statement against Michigan.
Collin Klein [Kansas State - QB] Klein is Braxton Miller with less explosive numbers. His candidacy rests on Kansas State continuing to win. Should he pull off the upset in Morgantown on Oct. 20 we may need to revisit this discussion. Right now, he would reach the podium though.
Mike Gillislee [Florida - RB] Posting 146 yards on LSU makes some noise. Big games against Georgia, South Carolina and Florida State would put him into the mix. Florida will pace him against their late season pay-check opponents. Not sure he will put up the extreme numbers it takes for a running back to win.
Cody Getz [Air Force - RB] His team is not good enough to get him there, but with no strong candidates we’ll tout him. Getz leads the nation in yards per carry and yards per game among featured running backs at 7.92 (more yards per carry than Denard Robinson). He’s on pace for more than 2,000 yards and 19 touchdowns. He has the 130 yards and three touchdowns on the road against Michigan to discredit arguments about his opposition. Maybe a Doak Walker Award?

A running back doesn’t necessarily need extreme numbers (eg, Mark Ingram) to win but they help. It’s basically Geno Smith and a bunch of alternate candidates right now. Miller & Klein pretty much need their teams to go undefeated to have a shot.

Needs more Lattimore.
October 10th, 2012 at 5:35 PM
I’d lean Clowney over Lattimore.
October 10th, 2012 at 5:36 PM
Am I the only one who sees a resemblence between Geno Smith and this gent?
October 10th, 2012 at 5:37 PM
That fact that Clowney disappears for long stretches at a time during games does not bolster his case.

Also, glad to see the Te’o push has subsided.

please rename this post “Geno and the Morass”.
October 10th, 2012 at 5:41 PM
After he wins the Heisman, that will be “Geno and More Ass.”
October 10th, 2012 at 5:41 PM
Geno Smith: +7.5 dog at Texas; +4.5 dog at Texas Tech.
October 10th, 2012 at 5:41 PM
Manti T’eo is the only defensive player with a chance to go to NYC unless Clowney ends up with Derrick Thomas numbers.

I have to go home now.

this is bullshit. this guy is too big a pussy to get an award with a statue of a guy stiffarming. he avoids contact like no other.

This statement couldn’t be farther from the truth.

It’d be cool as shit if an Air Force player won the Heismang.

As a longtime WVU observer, this is my prediction: the ‘Eers will roll over Tech, edge past KSU, Okie State and Boomer Sooner, hold off TCU and Iowa State, then flop mightily against Kansas in the regular-season finale.

Ummmm…no. If WVU was a dog this weekend, there’d probably be multiple 2nd mortgages being taken out as we speak.
October 10th, 2012 at 5:47 PM
He’s facing a lot of double/triple teams. When teams make the mistake of putting one guy on him, BOOM, he’s in a QB’s grill.
the guy is unreal. lock to be the No. 1 pick in 2014. Mettenberger, who has terrible awareness/pocket presence … will be in a lot of trouble this weekend.
October 10th, 2012 at 5:48 PM
Yikes, my mistake, ONLY a 4.5 favorite at Texas Tech.
Red Raiders can score, and are a fun pick at home – had a couple nice wins last year – but tough to pick against WVU right now. Feel like Stanford last year with Luck … cover machine the first 6-7 weeks.
October 10th, 2012 at 5:52 PM
Rapelisberger Jr. will get to feel what it’s like to be on the receiving end of some highly unwelcome aggression.
October 10th, 2012 at 5:58 PM
Agreed. But how about “The fact that he’s a defensive player does not bolster his case.”
October 10th, 2012 at 6:04 PM
On Ingram…
(1) He’s not a prototypical Heisman winner. If you look back his aggregate numbers are the absolute low end for a running back.
(2) He did have the eye-popping numbers they just came in specific games when it counted as opposed to over a whole season.

Soccer fans have a term for what Geno Smith is: “the man to beat.”
October 10th, 2012 at 7:13 PM
It’s over. It’s Geno Smith.
