Pat Shurmur: First NFL Coach Fired? He’s the Runaway Favorite
Only one coach has yet to win a game in 2012, so the vultures aren’t quite circling yet.
Later in the year, the NFC East may become a cauldron (Will passionate fan bases and ownership groups in Dallas and Philadelphia tolerate another season outside the playoffs?), and a few 2nd-year coaches could put themselves there if things don’t turn around, too (Rivera in Carolina, Munchak in Tennessee among them). Overall, though, there are enough new coaches and coaches off to good starts that very few are in trouble . . . yet.
Last year, we had three teams with no wins at this point: Indianapolis, Miami, and St. Louis. Sparano didn’t survive the season, and Jim Caldwell and Steve Spagnuolo were let go after it ended. Shurmur looks like the most obvious guy in trouble in 2012.
Tony Grossi says this can’t go on or Shurmur will not make it through the season. The “this” in this case is not only the 4-17 record since he became head coach, but also the surly behavior with the media and in public.
In the last week alone, Shurmur has confronted a former Browns coach for critical comments he made on a local radio show; tossed a few F-bombs after a reporter pressed him to go on the record about Trent Richardson’s excused absence at a Browns practice; and then over-reacted to legitimate and fair questions about a game-changing play-call in the 41-24 loss to the Giants.
Shurmur should go the Todd Haley route from last year and go with the homeless look. He has to know he is done. New owner Jimmy Haslem takes over officially in a week, so the guys above him are probably in trouble too. Unless he pulls a “Major League” and starts stripping Haslem’s clothes off in the locker room as the Browns surge to a division title, he’s not coming back.

Don’t count out Schwartz.
October 9th, 2012 at 12:48 PM
jets were some bad Miami special teams away from having Rex on this list.
good thing is the injuries might give him a mulligan, i can stand having the jets mediocrity around for another season.
October 9th, 2012 at 12:49 PM
Holmgren has to get canned too with the new administation coming in, right?
Watched that A Football Life about the ’95 Browns, that’s a fanbase I have true sympathy for…would be nice to see them get a good team one year
October 9th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
likely, but it depends on how much time the new administration has to get the organization up and running they want to set in place.
holmgren may get another year.
that was one of the better Football Life documentaries they have done. 30 for 30 gets the headlines, but Football Life is far better documentaries.
October 9th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
I was so baffled when they hired him in the first place. The Rams offense sucked under him.
October 9th, 2012 at 12:54 PM
That 95 Browns doc was very good. Not as good as some of the 30 for 30 but better than most. That has been my biggest issue with the 30 for 30, some are practically unwatchable while some like the Two Escobars are amazing.
October 9th, 2012 at 12:55 PM
I’m already worried one of these pro teams is going to throw piles of money at Bill OBrien. He had been in the mix for some pro jobs last year, and has only improved his resume.
October 9th, 2012 at 12:55 PM
I think the 30 for 30 docs try too hard sometimes. My favorite 30 for 30 is still the one on the Baltimore Colts marching band, as kind of dopey as it might have seemed.
October 9th, 2012 at 12:55 PM
Do coordinators ever get fired mid season, while the head coach is spared? Can’t remember it ever happening recently.
October 9th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
Old boys network. Shurmur is in Holmgren’s coaching tree by way of Andy Reid.
October 9th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
I appreciate that the Lions have an identity other than “really terrible” for once, so I’d like it if he stuck around. He’s also easy to root against.
October 9th, 2012 at 12:57 PM
I think this is the bigger personnel change to be made. If you pay all that money for a team, you almost certainly want to bring in your own guy, right?
October 9th, 2012 at 12:57 PM
Mine too, but I’m obviously biased. The one tonight about Carl Lewis and Ben Johnson looks sweet.
Romeo Crennel, anyone?
October 9th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
Not to sound like a troll, but Rex has to be in the mix, right?
October 9th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
I’m with you, only they kinda glossed over that whole fucking another city out of their team after spending the rest of the film asking for people to be sad for them…but I suppose this all could have been avoided if the NFL had given Baltimore the expansion club instead of Jacksonville
October 9th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
that’s my point, i think the quality overall is more consistent with the Football Life than it is with 30 for 30.
i haven’t seen a bad one yet, although i have missed a few.
then again, has NFL films ever done something bad?
October 9th, 2012 at 1:01 PM
chico
October 9th, 2012 at 1:01 PM
had they lost to Miami i’d say yes, but i think he gets a mulligan on this year from the injuries, as well as tannenbaum, so the jets fans will get that for at least a year.
unless gruden wants the job, but he’ll probably wait for Dallas.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:01 PM
Gotta love how they made Pete Rose signing stuff in Vegas seem as serious and profound as “Sophie’s Choice.” Give me a break. Overall “A Football Life” is far more enjoyable
October 9th, 2012 at 1:02 PM
yeah but kaiser, football life is about the same sport. 30s are all over the map

If the Lions win 2 or 3 games (which doesn’t seem too crazy based on performance so far) I think he’s done. He absolutely needs to beat Jacksonville. should be fired on the spot, if the Lions lose that one.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:04 PM
’98 Missing Rings, Robert Smith saying about losing to the Falcons, “We were the better team.” Eff off, you smug prick. Prove it on the field.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:04 PM
only reason Shurmur got the job in the first place is because Holmgren and him both share the same agent…what a joke

October 9th, 2012 at 1:04 PM
Tannenbaum isn’t safe whatsoever. Can’t give him a pass on injuries because he didn’t do enough to add depth to the roster. He’s done a poor job drafting the past two-three years as well. Rex may be safe but I wouldn’t doubt Tannenbaum getting axed after the seson.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
Or the Philadelphia job which will open up within the next season or two…
October 9th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
doesn’t matter, documentary is a documentary. quality overall in football life is better than 30 for 30. no matter what the subject is.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:07 PM
Didn’t Raheem Morris fire his OC a week before the season started last year?
October 9th, 2012 at 1:08 PM
In a vacuum, the 0-5 record is brutal. Every team has injuries, but to a young team the games missed by Haden, Taylor and Gocong were brutal. I think given that there are like 26 first or 2nd year players with a rookie QB, we’ll see how things end after 16 games.
I’d guess he is a good coach MON-SAT but fails on SUN with some shaky calls. They still haven’t decided on an identity either. If the team quits on him or balls hard til season’s end will dictate his future more than wins and losses.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:08 PM
that’s the catch 22. it’s either both stay or both go.
no GM worth his salt will keep someone else’s coach on their staff. if tannenbaum goes and Woody hires another GM who is Ok with Rex as his HC, might as well get ready for more mediocrity.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
Hawkeye –
You know you’re trolling.
Why should Rex be fired? Indulge everyone.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
Still waiting for Lynn Dickey: A Football Life
October 9th, 2012 at 1:10 PM
good opportunity to start fresh, might as well let Reid play out the Vick era and send him on his way.
i don’t think Vick has the ability to run the type of no huddle offense that is going to be moving through the NFL in the next couple seasons.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:11 PM
I don’t think very many people are going to want to be stuck with Michael Vick
October 9th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
I watch an unhealthy amount of college football and the whole draft process and I am convinced the Jets found those receivers on craigslist.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
Have to wonder how Minnesota feels about Leslie Fraizer likely earning another year at the helm of the Vikings. They could still spiral and finish a few games under .500 and his seat gets a bit warm but even a 7-9 season keeps him around. I know there were a few folks here who weren’t exactly pleased with the job he did last season.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:13 PM
Why should Rex be fired? Indulge everyone.
His “franchise” QB has noticably regressed, and everyone knew that schtick of his was going to wear out eventually. especially when they aren’t winning.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
I’m not saying he should be, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s on the very hot seat. Missed the playoffs last year, and off to a poor start this year. Mix in his mouth writing checks that his ass will eventually have top pay off, and you have a situation.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
Tommy Kramer: A Football Life would be so amazing. Just an hour of him telling stories at some dive bar.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
BALL DON’T LIE
October 9th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
Can i participate since I mentioned it first?
the two biggest knocks against Rex, and these go hand in hand with tannenbum, poor talent evaluation (putting 2nd and third level guys in starting roles), poor staff evaluation, and poor results for the schemes and plan for the team over his tenure.
+ for Rex: 2 AFC Championship Appearances. Those only get you so far.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
The Lions need a new D-coordinator.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:17 PM
He works cheap, so he’ll be around at least for next year no matter what happens the rest of the way. He’s actually shown some life on the sideline this year (arguing with refs, high fiving players) which was unexpected. He’s getting better.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:18 PM
best case scenario that’s completely unrealistic in every way imaginable…holmgren stays on as coach/pres, heckert and the rest of the staff is retained, pat shurmur is publicly executed.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:19 PM
What’s the over/under on when you say the Lions need a new #1 receiver?
October 9th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
Vick can be cut after this season with a minimal cap hit. Eagles are lining up for sub-.500 season.

October 9th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
LOL.
Rex only in trouble if the Jets win 0-1-2 games the rest of the way. I dont see it getting that bad.

October 9th, 2012 at 1:32 PM
Jason… didn’t you agree that if the Jets sucked this year Rex would/could easily be fired after the season? Moving it up half a year doesn’t seem particularly insane.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
I’m guessing it’s time to dial back the eternal optimism.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:35 PM

I’m completely giddy for this. Realistic chance he doesn’t crater? 50/50?
October 9th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
Actual prediction from McTibble
So maybe not on the Ryan thing. But I know he agreed this is Sanchez’ last year if it doesn’t go well.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
he does have a chute, right?
October 9th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Was a ton more impressed until I heard that the previous record was already 19 miles or something, and he already did 18 or something in a training jump.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
i guess i look at it from the standpoint and ask: is this team getting better, and will it get better, based on the history of moves made by the front office during the Rex/Tannenbaum Era? I don’t see evidence the team is going to get better unless there are drastic philosophy changes to the Jets player evaluation during the draft and free agency.
for a team that made it to two AFC championship games, is this where they should be right now? and does Rex/Tannenbaum have the answers from what we’ve seen so far?
October 9th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
Wait so how long will it take for him to get up there.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
I hope he dies. This sucks so far. When’s this going down?
October 9th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
What about Chan? He can’t make it through the season with the defense playing like it has so far. Maybe he can go back to Tech if Johnson gets shitcanned.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
This is just subliminal messaging to buy more red bull.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
What a fucking joke. “Doctor, this patient has liver cancer…” // “I’M AFRAID IT’S TERMINAL UNLESS WE CAN DELIVER DRUGS AT MACH 1″
Also, Red Bull giving a shit about science or medicine is such a fucking hypocrisy, with their lie-filled/misleading bullshit ads about “Doctors recommending Red Bull (not true at all).
Let’s put it this way: My pissed-off tweets helped inspire a takedown of Bill Barnwell’s idiocy, and I think Red Bull is 10x worse.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Fuck. It’s a 2 to 3 hour ascent. My ADD will not abide.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
Balloon hasn’t even left the ground. It’ll be another few hours after it takes off before it’s at 20 miles above earth
October 9th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
I don’t find Don Day to be credible. This is a hoax.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
This sucks so far.
I imagine the going up in a balloon part isn’t the exciting part. Not sure how long up, but five and a half minutes down.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:42 PM
I don’t think Rex will get fired mid-season though, because there are too many excuses right now. Wouldn’t be shocked if he’s gone come January though.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:42 PM
He won’t go unless they agree to clean up the shower facilities.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
Scrubbed. Shit.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
I keep hoping Jerrah will pull the trigger on Les Miles. Perfect mix of clueless owner and inoffensive coach.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
Mission aborted.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:44 PM

October 9th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
More of a letdown than Michael Shamburgler.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
Good. Fuck Red Bull.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
Who wants to start a class action lawsuit against Red Bull? Pretty sure that stuff is pure poison and they just wasted our time.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
And I still don’t have wings. False advertisement.

Doctors recommend if you are drinking Red Bull ANYWAY, may as well use the low-calorie version of the poison… and so Red Bull started their bullshit “Doctor-recommended” ad campaign. Horrible human beings.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
midseason, no, unless they do go winless… which is entirely possible and that’s never a good thing to associate with a team.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
What’s Rex’s contract situation like? Can’t imagine he goes this year unless they end up 4-12, think Jason’s right there.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
Vlad, I have a neighbor that is a 71 year old retired Hematologist. He drinks 4 to 6 Red Bulls a day. When I asked him if he drinks coffee he said, “No, it makes my stomach sour.”.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:49 PM
Who wants to start a class action lawsuit against Red Bull? Pretty sure that stuff is pure poison and they just wasted our time.
suing for time lost? so, your time is worth what per hour?
October 9th, 2012 at 1:49 PM
Did we say wings? Ooohhhh, oopsie, we meant to say “Red Bull gives you Parkinson’s Disease”
October 9th, 2012 at 1:50 PM
“Hey remember that 2-14 Jets team that went winless?”
“Nah. I do remember how numbers work though.”
October 9th, 2012 at 1:50 PM
5 Hour Energy has one of those campaigns now. I can tell you for a fact that no Doctor would recommend taking one of those extra strength ones. That shit is horrible for you.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:51 PM
while they don’t recommend it for medical reasons, I know residents consume gallons of that shit.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
I haven’t had a Red Bull in over ten years. I used to drink them during all night treks to the mountains to ski and they just turned me into a jittery mess in the morning.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
Shit. I think I’m confusing the two campaigns. Fuckity fuck. I’m still not apologizing though… fuck em both.

Mine is presently strung out on caffeinated water, “Water Joe”.
October 9th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
thankfully, mine was only strung out on Cinnamon Dolce Latte from the Starbucks on the way into work. some of her fellow residents had an energy drink in hand whenever possible though.
