NFL Re-Issues Exact Same BountyGate Suspensions
Roger Goodell doesn’t care about courts, judges or appeals. He is here to tell everyone what is what. In May, he suspended Jonathan Vilma for an entire season, Scott Fujita for three games, Will Smith for four games, and Anthony Hargrove for eight games. In September an appeals panel overturned the suspensions. Today, Goodell announced the new suspensions of all four players. From Pro Football Talk:
This means that Vilma will be suspended a full season, Fujita will be suspended three games, Smith will be suspended four games, and Hargrove will be suspended eight games.
[grabs calculator] … Oh. I’m sorry, Commissioner Goodell, could you clarify what that means?
So what now?
All four players have the right to appeal the ruling to Commissioner Roger Goodell. Given that the players chose this time around to meet with Goodell before he issued the suspensions, the players may be more inclined to participate in the appeal process this time around.
An appeal process. How novel. What then?
Then, after the appeal process has been completed, the players likely will take the league back to court — barring a dramatic reduction or reversal of the punishments by Goodell.
Oh. They definitely won’t have to take it that far. I bet Goodell will be willing to cut the suspensions once he’s had a chance to think about it. Hopefully, this time it goes all the way to the Supreme Court. The court has never defined “absolute power” before, but they know it when they see it.

Wow. Seems to me that we haven’t heard the last of this story quite yet.
I’m a smart guy, but color me confused with this one?

Also, Goodell is revoking Brees’s new passing record since Payton, Vitt and Loomis were present.
/ Not that it was a real record anyway

interesting move, makes me think it’s a message telling the players, go ahead and appeal again, i’ll still suspend you after that.
while i think he’s heavy handed in this, it is nice to see a commission take a page from the Kennesaw Mountain Landis playbook and hold the line on a scandal decision like this.

Also, all Baldwin clips should include him saying “Fuck you, that’s my name,” and “Shweddy balls.”

LOL!! This is EXACTLY why I told people to pump the brakes on the “Haha! GODdell got struck down!” If he says it wasn’t about salary cap avoidance, he can suspend all he wants. I think most people never even read the first decision that vacated the suspensions.

He’s just as wrong as Landis was in the Black Sox scandal. Have you seen what Jackson (.375 ba, OPS .956) and Weaver’s (.324 ba and OPS .824) stats were in that series? ARod must have been throwing pretty much every postseason series then. Landis also ignored the courts because the Black Sox were acquitted.

Alec Baldwin was an acting God.
As for Goodell, fuck him. Why didn’t he announced this last week before NBC showed up in New Orleans with all their cameras? Why didn’t he suspend Vilma, Smith (the only active player left on the Saints roster), Hargrove and Fujita before Al Michaels and Condescending Cris could ask Drew Brees about it for a national feature?
He’s full of shit. And I hope Johnathan Vilma takes that lawsuit all the way to the Supreme Court and nails his ass to the wall!

IIRC, Landis suspended them not for throwing the Series but for being aware of the plot to throw the Series and failing to inform authorities about it.

I’m no lawyer, but it seems that if he’s saying that the suspensions are only for the bounty, he’d better have damn solid evidence when this hits the courts. Also, I can hardly wait to find out who the snitches were when the case starts.
October 9th, 2012 at 4:34 PM
So is the only real “evidence” that we know about still the Gregg Williams statement signed off on only a couple weeks ago? The same Gregg Williams who is suspended and would SAY ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING that Goodell wanted him to for a shot a coaching again?
I hope this goes to court just so we can see more evidence. I’m all for suspending these guys if there’s cause, I just haven’t seen cause yet.

He’s probably trying to save face by giving the same suspensions and eventually reducing it on appeal. Also, Landis was the biggest fraud ever. If he was really bout it bout it, he would have suspended Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker.

Hope Vilma and the rest take this as far as possible. I totally understand why they wouldn’t, but I’d like to see Goddell get his ass handed to him on this one.
