Brian Cushing: Torn ACL, Out For the Season. Texans Super Bowl Hopes Derailed?
Brian Cushing, the Houston Texans terrific linebacker, has been lost for the season with a torn ACL, courtesy of this (dirty?) block by Matt Slauson of the Jets.
After we posted GIFs of the block Monday night, we heard from some folks who claim the block was technically, legal. Others didn’t see it that way, and thought diving at someone’s legs from behind when they are a few yards away from the play is not cool.
Either way, this is a devastating blow the Texans, who despite being 5-0, looked vulnerable at times against the lowly Jets. Houston has only played one team that appears to have playoff aspirations (Denver), and won that one mostly thanks to 436 yards of total offense while holding off a late Denver rally.
We’ll find out pretty quickly how much Cushing will be missed defensively: the Texans host Green Bay Sunday night, then Baltimore the following week before a bye. Houston should have no problems wrapping up the division title, but home field advantage in the postseason will be crucial.

This is one of those plays where you question why the NFL needs to protect the players when they won’t even protect each other. Whether that play was technically legal or not it didn’t need to be made. Cushing wasn’t making the tackle.

Safe to say he will spend the rest of the year doing steroids knowing he wont be tested, right?

Dirty.
Also…Houston’s D gave up 1 TD…I am not ready to say they looked vulnerable to the Jets.

No sb team should be dependent on a lb

Just a cheap shot on the defensive players’s part. Prob Cushing hit him earlier with a cheap shot himself and he saw an opportune moment and took it. I have no dog in this fight, but’s definitely cheap and he should be fined. The league needs to crack down on this stuff

Glad I’m not alone in thinking the 2006 Bears were one of the worst teams to make it to the big game

says a fellow Bears fan.
/I know he’s hurt now while playing

it doesnt derail things, but it does not help. watt, barwin and reed will pick up the slack.

Otherwise the Tom Brady / Ray Lewis commercials would look foolish. It’s all PR in the face of mega-lawsuits. Neither the league nor players have any interest in their health.
Fleece the shit out of the league for the players impacted by the league’s treatment of concussion studies in the past, show no sympathy for current players who are vegetables by forty.

would it still be a (dirty?) play if the Texans did it to a Jet?
how you don’t see it as being a dirty play boggles my mind. dude took aim at his legs and launched himself there.

Judging by the comments, I’m presuming the “folks” were Jets fans on twitter?

GIFs are the popular trick that everyone can do now, and it’s not hard to put it on an aggravating loop that makes your eyes hurt if the clip is too short.
