OH NO, nobody’s watching baseball anymore!! Or maybe…just maybe…baseball is much more regional and national broadcasts aren’t where the action is. There must be some money being made on national broadcasts though as these companies keep doling out millions:

“Major League Baseball agreed with Fox and Turner Sports on eight-year contracts that will run through 2021 and keep the World Series on Fox.

Yeah, baseball’s going down in flames! Everybody jump ship!

In baseball? Never, because revenue keeps rising.

It’s doing just fine… salaries keep going up. Increased Revenue -> increased salaries, not the other way around.

TV execs get a hard-on for sports, and the last contact negotiation wasn’t made inside this new financial paradigm. They had moderately declining ratings over a short time period in the last deal. That’s something that a savvy VP can explain away. Steadily declining ratings for over a decade, though? That’s much tougher.

I’m just trying to explain why ratings matter. Its not just DERP FOOTBALL IS KING DERP DERP. There are financial ramifications for a lack of interest.

Ratings measure interest. Less people are comparatively interested in baseball than football, especially from where it used to be. Poor ratings give networks leverage in the next TV deal.

I am certainly not a television executive. But I question the wisdom behind shelling out many more millions of dollars for TV rights when the ratings are declining. If baseball was a huge draw, playoff games wouldn’t be on TBS. They’re there because the networks thought their scripted/reality programming would deliver a better ROI. That’s incredible to consider.
