Allen Iverson Signing with Maccabi Haifa Rumors Are Spreading [UPDATE]
Allen Iverson, broke and 37, is rumored to be signing with the Israeli team Maccabi Haifa according to an Israeli website. Why Maccabi Haifa? Because the team is traveling to the US to play two exhibition games next month against the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves, and Iverson, obviously, would be a major draw. Iverson vs. Stephen Curry? Where do I sign up? Too bad Ricky Rubio is still recovering from his injury.
[UPDATE: The rumors, sadly, have been debunked.]
Iverson’s financial problems have been well-chronicled, but this could be an opportunity to begin digging his way out. [via Point Forward Pro]

At the game, only.
/since I missed the conversation
October 5th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
At the game, only
Only place in public. Friends over for game for beer/wings/etc., is ok too. But apparently wearing one of a 19 yr old is off limits. Old legends though are cool, i.e. Manning, Woodson

From roundup (Nada)
My wife got that when I was sad I couldn’t find the Blackstone Pumpkin locally… The two aren’t even of the same species. I may have to run a bottle of the Blackstone up to PeerlessPrices and Miz, just so I can have some confirmation that I’m not exaggerating.
Depending on what you drink before it, the spice/flavor changes, but it really is the best Pumpkin Ale I’ve ever had, by a large margin
I’d rate
Blackstone 9.5
Saranac 6
Sam Adams 5
Post Road 4
Blue Moon 3
October 5th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
I didn’t know Nate Ravitz was a Euro basketball ref.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
I’m not a fan of pumpkin beers, but my brother swears by Shipyard.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
I’m okay with it if you are going to a sports bar that has all the games on there, and everyone is there for the games only. Higher % of jerseys there than at a game, usually… and then you can scan and know exactly where to sit to view the game.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
I’m going to be in Portland, ME next weekend, so I will be making a stop there.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
When your country (one of two) is playing in the international spotlight for the first time you’ve been legal drinking age you get to wear the jersey out.
/and when the embarrass themselves thoroughly you get to climb onto your roof bleeding and drinking the national drink

Because it’s true.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
I’ll give you my office address and be waiting patiently for my delivery.
now that I think about it, feel free to bring one of each of these as well so I can have an accurate comparison.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
I don’t care for Saranac or Sierra Nevada beers for some reason. I should, I really should. Except Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
I’m repeating myself here, but I feel very strongly in favor of Saranac. Really good beer, and an outstanding price.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Miz – I think I’m going to Blackstone after work today, to try their Octoberfest beer. I’m fully expecting it to be a life-changing experience.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
now that I think about it, feel free to bring one of each of these as well so I can have an accurate comparison.
Me too. Your generosity is incomparable
October 5th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
Had that one the other week, very strange and good. It was $7.95 for one 650ml bottle but very tasty at 8.9%.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
I do like Saranac’s seasonals though usually. Sierra Nevada, though, for some reason their beers all taste the same to me. No idea.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
Wow, really? If you like the Celebration (which should be coming out soon I think) you would like their Big Foot I would think.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
I’m giving away the Post Road ones now that I have the Blackstone. I can’t fathom going back to that.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
I just looked at the lunch menu…JEALOUS.
ok, I’ll wait until Monday for my delivery.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Trust me it’s surprising to me as well, I don’t get it. I think it’s some form of alcohol autism.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
I’m also on this boat. I enjoy Saranac a lot. Just wish that their Pomegrante wheat was more available in July/August. It’s like a scavenger hunt trying to find it.
I don’t care for Brooklyn at all. Never have. Sam’s quality has gone down the past few years. Victory, Lagunitas, Flying Fish, Dogfish, Saranac are now my go-to for craft beers.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
Since moleman opened up, I’ll go next…I haven’t liked anything I’ve had from Dogfish. Probably tried 3-4 different styles over the years, and could never see the appeal.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
Glad I am not the only one who thinks that. It’s to the point I haven’t bought anything from them in a long time.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
This is the reason I hate using Pitt as the NFL team. That looks like the college team… I assume you meant Steeler fans, so for NFL I just go three letter all caps abbreviation (PIT).
And yes, I avoid them at all costs. Even the nice Steelers fans here can’t wash away 4 years in Pittsburgh around them. I say this in all seriousness that Eagles fans were way more tolerable than Steelers fans.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
Aside from Monster Ale (10%+) I agree.
Agreed.
Disagree for some reason. Drank a ton of Prima Pils and Hopdevil but it just does nothing for me.
Love Lagunitas, best IPA maker on the national stage. Never had Flying Fish, love Dogfish. The Black and Blue is great if hard to find.
Flying Dog, Cottonwood, Highland, and Rogue are my favorites.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
I’ll only get Sam Adams when I’m watching a Patriots/Red Sox game, out of loyalty.
I’ve never liked Dogfish (I’m iffy on hoppy beers, so when you are famous for an IPA, I’m not gonna jump at it). I generally like Redhook and Lakefront though… and New Glarus, for the few people here who can get it. I used to drink Fat Tire a bit, but the other New Belgium beers I’ve had weren’t particularly exciting to me.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
I don’t drink regular Sam that often, but the Seasonals which used to be must buy are not so much any more. They made the Summer too citrusy, the Spring has always blown, the October is ok still, but their Winter Lager is probably the last remaining good one…for now.
Their Summer beer that they had this year (Summer Love) was out of this world.
It’s a South Jersey brewery that you can really only get in Central & South NJ and the Philly area. They have it on tap at some of the beer places in the Phillies stadium.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
This. They kept saying how great the Prima was, and I was kinda meh on most of their beer. Granted, it was the day after the bachelor party where we picked up an off-duty stripper and brought her around with us, so I was a little hungover… but I wasn’t overwhelmed by their beer.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
I love their 90 minute and to a lesser extent their 60. I thought their Aprihop was really good and their Punkin Ale is my favorite out of the pumpkin beers. Their Chicory Stout is a favorite of mine too. Dogfish definetly has a different taste than a lot of breweries out there.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Definitely agree on this.
Also here’s an unpopular opinion: Bell’s Oberon is one of the shittiest beers in existence.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
http://www.biteintomaine.com/
Great location, best Lobster roll. Its a food truck.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
Three Floyds is doing great things. As is Bells, Founders, Old Hickory, Hoppin Frog, Rogue, certain Dogfish, Stone, and some others. Those brewers consistently put out products that cover a wide range of tastes, budgets, and accessibility.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
I saw a Facebook status saying “drinking a Sam Adams Cherry Wheat, loving it”… I can unfriend her for that, right?
That may be the worst beer I’ve ever had… or at least my least favorite.
Pyramid Apricot wheat actually isn’t bad though… Moleman, back before I was 21, I used to go to Fuel and Fuddle and have a bison burger with a Pyramid (you could always trick the server by saying no you dont want a beer then changing your mind later and she thinks she already carded you), and once you have an empty to exchange you can go up to the bar and drink all night.
/good times
October 5th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
Completely agree.
They’ve changed it too many times over the years to perfect it. I really like the Noble Pils, but to be honest, I don’t even know if that’s still their Spring brew.
It’s middle of the road, in terms of Oktoberfest beers.
It’s pretty outstanding.
I had their Imperial Ale a few weeks ago. They knocked it out of the park.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
What is with the faceless tits on the front page?
Mantis – I wish I could have tried the Summer Love. I can’t remember which one I liked the best… but there was a lighter one I liked way better than Prima Pils.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
Yes. Yes. Yes. Breakfast Stout might be the best beer ever made, in my opinion.
I’ve never had Old Hickory’s beers but have heard good things. You ever had Olde Mecklenburg? They make some good stuff, Charlotte is kind of weak compared to the rest of the state in brewing capacity though.
Highly recommend anyone going through the Asheville area hit up Pisgah. Tiny brewery in an industrial park but they converted a loading dock to an outdoor bar and taproom, insanely cheap on tap there and some fucking amazing beers.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
I still think Stone is my favorite. I had a black IPA from them not long ago, can’t remember the name but it was outstanding.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
And although I’m biased I do think Church Brew Works is the coolest brewery in America.
Though East End makes the best beers in Pittsburgh.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
Either the Golden Monkey or the Headwaters Pale Ale
October 5th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
It was the Golden Monkey
October 5th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
I would like to go back sometime. I have a stolen pint glass that needs a friend.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Love the breakfast stout (had one last night), but the KBS is amazing.
Love the Pisgah offerings. Bought some of their pumpkin spice offering the other week in Boone (Peabody’s; it’s an amazing store). Pretty much drank the growler myself over a weekend. I would also recommend Red Oak for the NC boys, and yeah, Old Hickory’s Lindley Park and Event Horizon are imperials that will change….your…life…
October 5th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Most of the glasses in my house are stolen pint glasses.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
My wife wants to spend Christmas in Asheville this year… I’ll need some good brewery/winery recommendations for us to visit. Never had Old Hickory, and won’t be close enough to visit the brewery, but I assume it’ll be sold in stores in Asheville?
October 5th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
WWoS – where are you coming from? I can make some recommendations along the way. However, once you get to Asheville, you absolutely MUST go by Bruisin’ Ales. They are one of the top 5 craft-beer-only stores in the country. I doubt by the time you get to Asheville the Old Hickory offerings will be very hard to find. I would recommend you call Peabody’s in Boone ASAP. Ask for Chris; he will hook you up. The Lindley Park just dropped this week, and the Event Horizon wont be out until later this month. They also just got in some Hoppin Frog offerings; amazing.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:20 AM
WWoS, if I can find that Blackstone, I’ll give it a try.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:20 AM
I desperately want to try Fat Tire…. it’s still not sold in Alabama (that I know of). Its ok though, since I’m gonna ride the Bells train till that sumbitch breaks down. I’ve had Two Hearted, Kalamazoo Stout, and Amber Ale, and all of them are fantastic.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:20 AM
I meant to say you WILL have a hard time finding it. Its a small release, and its out now. If you can find it around Christmas time, I’d be impressed. Same for Event Horizon.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:22 AM
Hopslam is the best Bell’s offering. Period. Good luck finding it, however.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
Are you ever in Nashville?
I’ll be taking I40 the whole way from Nashville.
BTW whoever suggested Shipyard… it looks amazing. They have a limited release 11.4% Smashed Pumpkin 750 mL (bourbon barrel aged) that is on my list to find.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
Where in AL are you, Mullet? Possibly going to Birmingham for the marathon in February.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
Oh you bastard I’m so jealous. I lived three blocks from Peabody’s when I lived in Boone. I spent so much time there.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
Coming from Nashville, I don’t have a whole lot. Enjoy Bruisin’ Ales though, that place is incredible. Ask the guys there about limiteds, hard to find stouts and barleywines you can age, and anything else you are interested in. I’d recommend a trip or two over to beeradvocate.com to see whats out there in the craft world, make some notes on stuff you may want to try, and pick the guys brains at Bruisin. They are a great staff.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
I enjoy Hell Hath No Fury. Cleared Peabody’s out of their stock when they got it actually.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
I follow the lady who owns it on twitter and facebook, she’s so nice and man does she know her beer.
Bears fans though.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
fixed for beer snobbery. seriously though, that store is awesome and the staff are super knowledgeable and helpful. thats not even mentioning the wine offerings.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
I’ve driven through twice, the last time two summers ago.
If it’s not available in the Dallas area, I’m SOOL, I guess.
Maybe Flying Saucer or Ginger Man have it.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:30 AM
Thanks Heel. Closer to the trip, I’ll do some research for sure.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
Definitely visit Pisgah. And Highland.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
Doubtful. They’ve only been bottling a year now, and I think they are getting close to AL and KY, but I couldn’t imagine getting it anywhere more than an hour from Nashville, for a few years still.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
You’re welcome, but you spent time in New England, and weren’t familiar with them? For shame.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
The Flying Saucer here used to put it up on special as “Highland Gaelic My Balls”
October 5th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
I was 18 when I left. I’ve had Shipyard a few times when I’ve been back, along with some Smuttynose (my mom used to get a local sampler for me when I visited from college). I’ve just never had the Pumpkin, or been to the brewery to try some more limited-run or less popular beers.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
30 mins north of Bham. Which marathon, Mercedes? I’ll be running that one.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
Yeah for sure. When NC passed the high gravity law in 05 I was living in the same complex down the street I moved back to six years later, and the first day I biked down to Peabody’s and just went to town.
That huge hotel next to it is an eyesore now though that’s for damn sure.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
Wonder if the local specialized liquor store could order a specialty offering from Bells? They carry several of there products as it is.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
Yeah, I turn 30 the day before Mercedes, so I wanted to run the full there. May end up just running half, because I just started running again, so we’ll see how training goes.
If you remind me I’ll bring a sampler of Blackstone down… I’ve got to spread the Gospel of Good Beer.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
Smuttynose is generally really good, but their one of those beers that I just don’t have often enough. I did just have their Winter Ale as part of a craft brew sampler my local liquor store puts together.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
I’ll be running the half myself, I don’t have time to train for a full.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
I’m running a half in Memphis in December, then will decide. My wife is running a full so it’s easy enough now to be on the same schedule… tough part will be after Dec 1 when she is done, and I have to get the motivation to run 20 miles alone. Fucking brutal.
October 5th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
i’;ll have the wife surprise me with some pumpkin beer that wholefoods carries. see what all the fucking fuss is about
/do i need some whip cream and a fork?
October 5th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Thats a great story. I would’ve done the same thing. Let’s just say that they have two hard-earned Franklins in their register from the last few weeks
Agreed.
