Talking point for today: Debates don’t matter.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:12 AM
Damn, what a tough 24 hours he must be having right now. Imagine if they would have had to play Friday. Terrible.
I don’t think Obama did bad last night from a campaign perspective. But from a debate perspective? Ugh. Romney definitely won, although he’s going to have to answer a lot of questions about the things he said. The bigger frustration for Obama supporters is the utter lack of fight he had in him. Romney gave him opening after opening after opening — there was even a question from Lehrer tailor-made for a 47 percent discussion — to pounce and he just sat there playing WWF or something.
BarryO played B-L-E-W-I-T for nine percentage points.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:13 AM
A’s pitcher Pat Neshek and his wife lost their baby a day after he was born “with no explanation.” Absolutely heartbreaking.
One of the nicest MLB players out there. Really sad to hear about these kinds of things when I am going to be a dad in a few months.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:14 AM
Lets see if Alex Lifeson stays true to not going if they get in.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:14 AM
If this was the final debate, Romney would have a chance. He’ll get a bump from this, no doubt. But the Obama that showed up last night won’t make another appearance.
Romney kept himself alive. That was a huge accomplishment. How he deals with the fact checkers, endless position changing(he’s back to centrist Mitt), and his own unlikeability remains to be seen. But in the next 4-6 days his numbers will go up, no doubt. He’ll still lose the election.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:17 AM
Can’t wait for Texas to beat Baltimore tomorrow.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:17 AM
It’s a whole new race this morning than it was yesterday at this time. I’ve never seen a debate cause such a swing in the perception of both candidates.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:18 AM
No Hi-yo Silver? No William Tell Overture? Fuck that.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:18 AM
The version of Romney and the things he talked about last night was totally different from how he has campaigned. Can someone (Jimmy Chitwood, maybe) pinpoint what he would actually do if elected?
October 4th, 2012 at 8:19 AM
Debate fact check, what a mess.

Romney owned Obama.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:21 AM
Orioles will get crushed. 8-2, methinks.
You should get out more. If you think 90 minutes is going to change two years worth of Romney negatives, well, you’ll be disappointed next month.
He did well. He should have after three months of practice. He lied extensively and will have to answer for those. There are also two more debates in which you can count on Obama bringing up Bain, 47 percent, his wealthy tax cuts, his endless position shifting, and his lack of specifics (the one good line Obama had last night was about Romney’s “secret plans being too good to tell anyone about).
Romney will lose the election, but now he may not lose by as much.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:22 AM
Trickle down government.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:23 AM
I think everyone’s views on policies are pretty well established here and certainly won’t be changing so I will only offer this half kidding assessment of last night:
Obama is like a 17 year old girl that falls in love with her first boyfriend and the idea of getting married. Obama fell in love with the fact that he could be President and try to change the world. However, he’s now in a miserable marriage and wants out, because it isn’t what he thought it would be. I watched a President last night that could honestly not give a fuck if he gets re-elected or not. Go ahead Barry, retire and become one of the 1%, you’ve got plenty of cash and your golf game will only improve from here.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:23 AM
Meanwhile….
October 4th, 2012 at 8:24 AM
soused, this makes no sense.
FC says Obama lied about Romney’s 5 trillion tax hike because…Romney said he’d offset it? How? What is his plan? Because Romney said he’d offset it not means Obama lied?
Then, in the very next line FC calls Romney a liar for not having a plan to offset tax cuts. That would seem to be at odds with the first bullet.
I’m genuinely confused.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:24 AM
I watched Cleveland ’95 on NFLN and The Journey on BTN last night. Great stuff. Anyone catch that? What else did you sheep watch?

Should have been in years ago. Same with Deep Purple. Rock & Roll HOF just doesn’t get it. What a bunch of goobers.
Not much detail in the story. Wonder what got the former player so angry?
October 4th, 2012 at 8:25 AM
Yeah, what a surprise: THEY BOTH LIED!!!
October 4th, 2012 at 8:26 AM
that still remains to be seen, I would be interested to see how this debate affects state polling in places like florida, ohio, etc. If there are big swings there is could be trouble for the President.
3 more debates and a month to go…it’s not over but Obama made it unnecessarily more difficult.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:26 AM

Considering who is on that list and who is in before them, they should boycott.
/No Rush Fanboy, just a music fan.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:28 AM
That’s the main takeaway. Obama really did himself no favors. He didn’t hurt himself, but he didn’t shut the door when he could have. Its doubly frustrating because it was all right there for him to take. He didn’t miss; he just didn’t even try. Someone gave him some really shitty advice.
jensen, I really like Cabin in the Woods. Clever in a lot of different ways.

Over/under for combined PurdueMatt/MikeNYC roundup comments today: 14
No denying Romney had a better performance. Obama better get his act together, quick
October 4th, 2012 at 8:30 AM
The Big Bird/PBS thing was the gaffe of the night. What was Romney thinking, there? Obama had the best line of the night (secret plans) and Romney the only gaffe, yet Mittens won everything else.
The good news: Obama has no choice but to let Biden off the chain next Thursday. That VP debate is gonna be awesome.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:31 AM
How did Gary Johnson do last night?
/sweet system
October 4th, 2012 at 8:31 AM
I usually actually enjoy the political talk on here. But the debate talk will be a yawner. I’ll wait for a week and see what the polls say.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:31 AM
My take:
You can always point out who wins a debate, even if you disagree with his side. That being said, there are many who hated what Romney had to say (or didn’t say), but to believe he didn’t “win” the debate is ridiculous.
That being said, I don’t think it matters. I don’t believe people are undecided at this point, 1 month from the election. They just don’t want to be ridiculed, or have a verbal sparring match over their choice.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:31 AM
Watched the Cleveland thing later last night. Modell messed over that team & that city. Left the team behind to catch hell while he was setting up shop in B’more? Rich guy like him coulda/shoulda done more commuting to Cleveland to face the music.
Watching the fans tear out bleachers & throw ‘em on the field was bizarre, though. You’ll never see that again.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:32 AM
Not when it comes to the number of words Queefer is going to enlighten us with in this post.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:32 AM
Eh, I think he did a lot more than that. Not only did he go toe to toe with the sitting POTUS, he practically owned that stage.
He accomplished to project that intangible quality that eluded failed challengers of the past (Gore in particular) — which is to credibly “look and sound Presidential”. Now that may sound like its superficial, but at the end of the day, voters have to ask themselves a very simple question, “can this guy be a good POTUS”?
And Romney answered that with a resounding YES last night.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:32 AM
Agree on both points. “Performance” is the right word, because that’s exactly what Romney did: put on a carefully staged act. Smart, and Obama erred majorly by trying to stay above it all. I think you’re going to see a much different BO in the next two debates.
Biden needs to pull a Cheney 2004 and stop the bleeding next week.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:33 AM
fucking clowns. get the hell off campus. and somebody needs to do the “Xander” kid a favor and punch him in the face for being a complete douchebag.

If I could bring a hacksaw into Ford Field…. Stupid terrorists and gov’t.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:36 AM
Please oh please let Biden off the chain. PLEASE!!!
Watching morning news and reading stuff on the internet over the past 24 hours is like night and day. There’s an entirely new narrative now.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:36 AM
Anytime Biden opens his mouth, the GOP gains some votes.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:37 AM
I wouldn’t necessarily say that. I think he did hurt himself in terms of perception. Dem friends I know (and someone mentioned it here) were kind of taken back about how out of it he seemed, like he didn’t want to be there
Perception is reality in the debates
October 4th, 2012 at 8:37 AM
Just remember, that last debate will be about foreign policy. BO better hope no other movies are released that he can blame for Middle East violence against Americans rather than his failed policies and lack of security build up when he was given advance notice of threats to embassies.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:38 AM
No there isn’t. They’ll all be back on the Barry bandwagon and non-stop bashing of Mittens by Friday.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:38 AM
He had an awesome Frankenstein like commercial last night
October 4th, 2012 at 8:38 AM
Did Kerry really coach him? I guess that makes some sense — Kerry creamed Bush in 2004. I figured his advisers really wanted to maintain the Obama “brand” — clam, controlled, professorial. That’s fine in the third debate. First one, though, against an on-the-ropes challenger? Major mistake.
I think Obama just wasn’t on his game. I really find it hard to believe that his advisers, even the most conservative ones, told him to avoid the 47 percent comment during an economic debate. That shit cray.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:38 AM
Blah blah blah, fuck the presidential debates. If you need one-liners, “zingers” and bullshit stats in a format that favors who can argue better over a two-hour span then you probably shouldn’t be voting.
So, here’s my contribution. Remember that cop who punched that chick a few days ago in the street protest? JMac had video for us. Anyway… that guy is to be fired.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:39 AM
Are any commenters actually undecided at this point (or at least going into last night’s debate)?
October 4th, 2012 at 8:39 AM
No doubt. And Obama should have known that.
Either way, you could tell that he was rusty as shit while those 21 debates Romney participated in over the last 20 months really helped.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:41 AM
Good. Should be.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:42 AM
She’s kinda mousey looking.
I caught my wife watching that Castle show last night. The chick there, now she’s hot.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:42 AM
Obama was overmatched, plain and simple. He wasn’t “off his game,” he simply ran into an opponent he can’t handle. I’ve never seen him look so weak.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:44 AM
agreed on the last point, but wouldn’t say he was overmatched. romney was just the better liar last night.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:44 AM
Obama will be back in “Rev. Wright” mode for the next debate, no doubt. And if you thought that debate was bad, Biden is gonna get destroyed. This is a guy who can’t read a prepared speech without fucking it up, let alone ad lib. He’s a circus clown going against Ryan, who even Dems in Congress were impressed with right up until he has tabbed as Romney’s running mate.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:44 AM
Neither has swayed my non-voting stance and the Wife, who is generally a Republic due to “fiscally conservative” views, feels she doesn’t have anyone to vote for at this point.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:44 AM
I hate how the media uses their heavy hand to control election choices. Keeping independent candidates out of debates is against every principle this nation was founded upon.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:45 AM

October 4th, 2012 at 8:46 AM
to be fair, if we’re going on the principles this country was founded on, our current president would currently be…um…in the agricultural sector.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:46 AM
Is swaying non-voters more difficult than undecideds? I assume it would be.
Yes, Obama couldn’t handle Romney. Makes perfect sense.

October 4th, 2012 at 8:47 AM
Undecided here. I thought Romney must have created a new form of math that no one knows about in order to push his tax stance so I’d like to see him show his work. I think Barry looked weak but he might have just been playing rope a dope to get Mitt to put his cards on the table.

October 4th, 2012 at 8:48 AM
If they can’t win, its really hard to justify putting them on a stage. There were two guys up there last night for 90 minutes and they barely got through five questions. Add a third or fourth or fifth candidate to the mix? It would be a four hour debate with nothing accomplished. The fringe candidates would be throwing bombs to try and make an impression while the two real contenders would just give stump speeeches.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:49 AM
Don’t know if he could or not. I’m sure he didn’t.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:49 AM
Yeah, I’m leaning Obama I guess, even though I’m mostly a Republican.
Didn’t watch the debate, other than about 5 minutes when the president looked terrible.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:50 AM
Yeah, exactly (although I do think Romney did more to help himself last night than Kerry did in three debates in 2004).
Again, if it was the last debate I think Romney would have a real shot. And if last night’s Obama shows up for the next two, Romney will have a real shot. But its hard to imagine any scenario where Obama lets that happen again.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:50 AM
How OH scored the debate is all that matters. It’s a one state race.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:51 AM
Based on current number of comments in this post, the Over/Under on percentage being from Queefer is officially set at 17.5%
The windows are now open.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:51 AM
That really could have been any five minute chunk of the debate other than the “its math” and “secret plans” sections.

October 4th, 2012 at 8:54 AM
The only time in recent memory where we had a third candidate in the Presidential debates was h. Ross Perot and that is because he was polling in the double digits and was viable as an alternate candidate, otherwise it’s usually the two parties and the media do not control who is in the debates. The debates are organized by an independent body.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:54 AM
Theyre allowed to participate in primary debates.
Its sort of a chicken or egg thing. These candidates have no national profile and no chance of winning. Is that because they get no attention from the media, or do they get no attention from the media because they have no chance of winning?
October 4th, 2012 at 8:54 AM
So he’s the equivalent of Bush?
October 4th, 2012 at 8:55 AM
i think they overplayed “not being concerned” with Romney and didn’t anticipate Lehrehr losing control as much as he did, which was a mistake.
Obama does better in townhall settings as well, Biden will come out swinging so Obama doesn’t look like the angry black man, and the surrogates and attack ads will be just as effective in the battleground states as the debates are.
i don’t think this was the game changer romney surrogates pronounced it to be before the debate happened.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:55 AM
Also, I think RLC is smoking hot. Not really sure why, but I’ve felt like this for quite some time.

October 4th, 2012 at 8:57 AM
The more people that vote for him, the more likely there will be a 3rd party included in the debates.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:57 AM
Youre going to see a spike in Mittens’ favorables over the next 3-5 days as the instant debate reaction comes in, then it will ebb over the next four weeks. Had the race been closer coming in, this would have been a different story (although Obama might not have taken that approach last night).
Still, he has some work to do now. He let Mitt “47 percent” Romney paint himself as the anti-bank, anti-rich, pro-poor, pro-middle class candidate last night without so much as a challenge. That was a massive mistake.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:58 AM
the third party needs a strong candidate with an already established national profile and the personal wealth to build their campaign w/o relying solely on public funds.
or, they need an established member of the other party breaking ranks and running as well.
that’s how they need to get started during an election.
October 4th, 2012 at 8:58 AM
This is said every presidential election. There’s a LONG ways to go.

I’m on board. With the new PA voter ID law postponed in PA, I feel comfortable that Romney won’t win here. Gary it is.
October 4th, 2012 at 9:01 AM
it’s a long shot and a gamble, but they let Romney paint himself like that, will the GOP let him continue to act like a conservative liberal and say these things without correcting himself?
at the same time, if Mitt had these stances throughout the campaign i’d have serious doubts who i am going to vote for, but based on his ever changing positions i have no idea what he actually aims to do and can’t trust anything he says, more so than other politicians.
October 4th, 2012 at 9:01 AM
^I would never tell anyone to give up on something they believe passionately about, I just don’t think we’ll see a serious 3rd party candidate in our lifetime.
October 4th, 2012 at 9:02 AM

October 4th, 2012 at 9:02 AM
As I said before this site will be fun the day after the election when Romney has won. Obama didn’t have a bad debate, he has had a bad 4 years. There is no defense for that. And the blame the moderator talk is such crap. CNN showed Obama talked MORE than Romney. Was actually a substantive debate. Obama is toast and there isno amount of regression analysis that Silver can do to change it.
October 4th, 2012 at 9:02 AM
You absolutely shouldn’t, and I don’t think anyone is insinuating that you should. But wondering why Gary Johnson isn’t invited to a presidential debate a month out from the election is a bit obvious, no?
October 4th, 2012 at 9:02 AM
I don’t really understand what people think adding a viable third party is going to accomplish.
October 4th, 2012 at 9:04 AM
Yes. They will do whatever they need to in order to win. Hilarious that the way Mittens finally becomes a viable candidate is by acting like Obama.
October 4th, 2012 at 9:04 AM
One more thing. How the President’s team and Libs convinced themselves that a highly succesful and accomplished person like Romney was a light-weight is amazing to me. Group Think kills people.

October 4th, 2012 at 9:06 AM
You have to give Obama a little slack on two angles.
1. With a jobs/economic record as awful as his, he couldn’t stand up there with a straight face and tried to defend it. And he didn’t. So he took a beating. Get used to it. (Only the Obamabots in the comments section of The Big Lead can try to defend 40 months of 8.0+% unemployment).
2. The man was without his teleprompter. And for all the praise he receives as a public speaker — even when he’s putting on his best Malcolm X impression when race-pandering about Hurricane Katrina to an all-black audience a mere year before running for President — Obama is not very quick on his feet. He’s good at reading prepared remarks that somebody else wrote for him; not quite as adept when trying to articulate his positions as his opponent is deftly undressing them.
And that’s the other thing. Romney has had the experience of debating Newt Gingrich (a clown, sure, but a tremendous debater) in the primaries leading up to this, while Obama on occasion will grace the lap-dog press with a question or two.
That reminds me — has anyone in the media bothered asking him about the Benghazi terrorist attack cover-up on the anniversary of 9/11? I’m sure it will come up in the debate on foreign policy.
October 4th, 2012 at 9:06 AM
Yeah, if a different conservative politician had those views from the jump, not only would I consider who I vote for but this election would have been over already. Mittens is stunningly inauthentic and for all his success last night, it’s not being lost on people that he’s morphed into someone completely different yet again a month before the election.
October 4th, 2012 at 9:07 AM
I really don’t get why proving who you are when you vote is a big deal. I need photo ID to do so many things. If I tell them to fuck off I get arrested or can’t purchase goods.

Besides, the voter ID law will go into effect next year, when there won’t be so much scrambling, and hopefully the state can make sure these ID’s will be easily accessible and affordable.
October 4th, 2012 at 9:09 AM
People get caught up in the minutiae of every little detail during the campaign leading up to the debates, but last night put in stark relief what this election will come down to: the economy. And it should come as no surprise that Obama is actually in real trouble for this very reason: he simply can’t run on his record — and there is no place to hide in a 1-on-1 debate format (if Romney is worth his salt, which he demonstrated he is).
Romney’s gameplan going forward is very simple, keep jabbing with Obama’s domestic policy record and then go with the big “8-9% national unemployment” uppercut and paint the picture that Obama ran around trying to put out small fires everywhere but failed to put out the major fire that will come back to burn him.
October 4th, 2012 at 9:10 AM
Obama’s gonna really try extra hard during the next debate, so it won’t matter. Oh yeah, and debates don’t matter anyway…or so I heard 10K times prior to the debate yesterday.
October 4th, 2012 at 9:10 AM
On its face, nothing. BUT, implementing it six weeks before a presidential election is cray. There are 750K people in PA alone who don’t have photo ID. That’s a lot of requests to fulfill. It costs people money and time. And most importantly, it’s not a problem. I think there were something like 8 cases of voter fraud in PA last election.

I’m not sure why we’re pretending this is the first time the American people have been aware who’s running for president, what their positions are, how the economy is doing, etc. There wasn’t a single new thing presented last night. This idea that Romney exposed Obama’s policies or something is absurd. He’s been saying the same thing to national audiences for over a year.
Romney heavily rehearsed in order to win a sound byte contest. And it worked. That’s really the extend of all this.

A DL is the most common form of photo ID. Lots of poor people dont own cars. Older people dont drive. Urban dwellers don’t drive. Why would they need a licenses.
Sure, there are alternatives. But it’s like everything else in life: if you dont need it, you’re not going to make an effort to get it. DL/photo ID in PA are (I believe) $36. If you’re poor, that’s a decent chuck of change to spend on something you’ll never use.
October 4th, 2012 at 9:20 AM
You’re only making yourself look more and more desperate.
October 4th, 2012 at 9:20 AM
why get a license if you can’t afford a car? Why have a license if you stopped driving a dozen years ago b/c your 75 years old? why have a valid photo id if you have no use for it?
it’s not required by law to have a valid photo ID, or to even carry one if you aren’t driving.
October 4th, 2012 at 9:20 AM
Oh yeah, I totally agree. Making poor people pay to vote should disgust every American.

Just rewatched it last weekend. The awesome thing about having a girlfriend who has been nerding out in college for the last 16 years is that she has no comprehension of movie and television culture. Recently, she’s asked to see Dumb ‘n Dumber, The Wire, and Wag the Dog. “Honey, can we watch Deadwood?” nearly brought a tear to my eye.

Yes, I’m the desperate one who thinks all the polls are biased by a liberal media intent on reelecting Barry O.

A lot of poor people don’t have bank accounts. They either get paid in cash or not at all.
I’m all for ID to vote. I think its a sound policy, provided you can give everyone free access to said ID and there is an acceptable period of time before an election to make that happen. If it goes into effect in 2013 and someone shows up to a voting booth in 2016 without an ID, no excuses. But four weeks before an election? No way.
October 4th, 2012 at 9:27 AM
Proving who you are isn’t the issue. The issue is that it costs money (in the form of getting an ID, such as a driver’s license or state ID from the government)to prove who you are, the modern equivalent of a poll tax.
PA is trying to get around this by offering free IDs, but they can’t do that so quickly before Novemeber. Becauue of concerns about disenfranchisement, the law is delayed until next year.
October 4th, 2012 at 9:27 AM
That’s because the GOP nomination process was pretty much a clusterfuck and Romney — let’s face it — has had a rough beginning after securing the nomination, and has frankly been his own worst enemy — but — now the focus changes. The debates mark the first time the voters are forced to have a good hard look at the Obama record on a national level. US Presidential elections are usually a referendum on the record of the incumbent POTUS rather than the pros/cons of the challenger. And I’m just saying… when you block out all of the noise, that record doesn’t look like a winner to me.
October 4th, 2012 at 9:28 AM
My bad, Jimmy. I get you, imjustsayin and the other right-winger mixed up. One of you were screaming that Nate Silver and other polls were biased toward Obama and that Romney was really winning. If it wasn’t you, I apologize.

Exactly. It works both ways. The Dems basically coasting, totally overconfident and feel like they can’t lose = overestimation of voter turnout for your guy. Conversely, GOP supporters have felt the opposite, and there is nothing more helpless than a vote that doesn’t matter… but now, this can serve as a catalyst to turn that sentiment around, and probably just in time. Pretty sure that his entire campaign has been based around: Mitt’s tax returns (I believe that you, in fact, at some point said something to the effect of: “and let’s be honest, Mitt hasn’t paid any taxes in a very long time), Bain capital (a firm that every right-winger from Bill Clinton, Cory Booker, Ed Rendell, and Harry Ford have defended), millionaires & billionaires with their corporate jets, tax cuts for the rich, and George Bush. Remember George Bush?
Face it, Obama cannot run on his record. He cannot explain how raising taxes will help create jobs — Romney challenged him on this last night, and ran him over. The proof is in the pudding.

And how will Romney create jobs? Let’s not pretend he had an answer. Couldn’t answer how he’d replace HC, couldn’t answer how he’d pay for his tax cuts, couldn’t answer how trickle down economics works.
He said he’d crate 12 million jobs in his first term. Awesome. We’re on track to do that now. Romney has no ideas, no plan, no specifics. It’s Obama’s fault for not going after that (the one time he did, it landed well) but its wishful thinking to believe he’ll make that same mistake two more times.

Taxes on businesses have never been lower, yet they’re sitting on more cash than at any point since the Gilded Age (adjusted for inflation). Simplifying the tax code and creating jobs aren’t necessarily related.
goodfella: that was a good Romney answer. You avoiding answering the question and instead used an out-of-context number to slam Obama. Nicely done.

i watched like 6 minutes of that debate, read about 6 minutes of tweets. I understood that Barry was losing, Big Bird was fucked, Ryan turned in a 99 page book report that was 82 pages of charts with 9 title pages for his Economy class, and Mittens got in all of his zingers.

The corporate cash surplus is effectively a vote of no confidence to either: A) the current economic climate or B) that this will change in the near term — which is another way of saying that they haven’t had confidence in the economy during Obama’s term. Otherwise, cap ex, investment in plant / equipment, hiring etc would all appear better options than sitting on cash… Now who’s fault is that? Mr. CEO? Or the Commander in Chief?

Dont know where that came from, because its not true. Although from what I can tell he had great taste in sport teams.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
was at the last game tho, if that means anything…it doesn’t, but my uncle and grandfather have a seat. w00t.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:13 AM
And yet businesses sitting on all this money (which I agree with) are not reinvesting it or hiring people. I wonder why that is? I suppose it’s just old white man greed according to the 47%ers.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
Although from what I can tell he had great taste in sport teams.
I thought you were him. I guess he just quit showing up, too. Usually it’s the good ones that stop coming. Now it’s the good ones, and Coop.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
This is a common fallacy.
Reason it out, companies are more profitable doing nothing with lower tax rates. Some industries it makes more sense to hire lobbyists to reduce tax rates/hinder competition than hire. Companies hire only to meet larger demand and by increasing the tax burden on the middle class or eroding social safety net wages are not spent on goods.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
The corporate cash surplus is effectively a vote of no confidence to either: A) the current economic climate or B) that this will change in the near term — which is another way of saying that they haven’t had confidence in the economy during Obama’s term.
you are exactly right on both points according to every business owner and developer I have done business with in the past 4 years. regardless of political stance, they have all said the exact same thing (those two points) and have expressed it for a while.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:19 AM
He did explain it, obtusely. The idea is (cue Soused): lowering rates allows businesses to hire more, more jobs equal more people participating in the workforce, more people in the workforce equals a much broader base of people to tax (the 47% argument). So you have more people working and more people paying taxes and thus, more revenue going to the government.
Now, I’m not saying you have to agree with the idea. But that is the idea.
Conversely, raising taxes on businesses does what to stimulate jobs? And I imagine you agree getting the unemployment rate well below 8% should be everyone’s top priority right now.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:19 AM
So people don’t have confidence in the economy leading to a slumping economy…a self-fulfilling prophecy if there ever was one
October 4th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
Top priority should be solving the debt/deficit issues. If that doesn’t get fixed then we’ll long for the days of 8% unemployment.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Sherlock Holmes, to crowd in bar: I’m reminded of the curious case of the Manchurian Mambo…
Dr. Watson, whispering: Holmes, could I have a word?
Holmes: Yes, what is it?
Watson: I believe that was the Manchurian Mamba.
Holmes: Mambo, mamba. What’s the difference?
Watson: Well, very little, except that one is a deadly, poisonous snake, while the other is a rather festive Carribean dance.
Holmes, turning back to crowd: It was a night like any other, when suddenly a knock came at the door. I opened it, and there were these Manchurians, doing a rather festive Carribean dance…
October 4th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
This is Reagan economics, which is complete and utter bullshit. Businesses aren’t not hiring because of their tax rates. They aren’t hiring because this country isn’t manufacturing anything, has transitioned to a paper and service economy, and has become entitled and lazy. Other less developed countries are better educated and do things more efficiently and at a lower cost.
And I don’t agree with raising taxes either. I think we should be investing in things more than we are.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
Opposite is true, everyone and their Moms are buying government bonds without confidence in the private sector, also highlights the bullshit manufactured debt ceiling crisis. That money should be invested for instance in the veterans work program, a bi-partisan bill that was shot down by the obstructionist GOP.
Again, can anyone explain how austerity measures grow an economy? Although that pussy footing moderator should be fired Romney fired PBS during 30 minutes of speaking, increasing unemployment prolongs the recession.
Fucking Obama had anniversary pussy on the brain, put me in coach.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
Of course people don’t have confidence in the economy. We’re still emerging from the worst economic crisis any of us will ever see in our lifetimes, and one of the worst in history. Every single discussion about the economy, unemployment, and the debt/deficit has to be viewed through that prism. How anyone could think we’re supposed to bounce back from this after a year or two is beyond me.
To hear conservatives talk about it, Obama inherited something that was rolling along beautifully, fell asleep at the wheel and suddenly we’re at 8%+ employment.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
2 pro choice women supreme court = ok, but noone cares
Pulled out of Iraq = great job, applause. Seriously.
Ended DOMA = about 5% of the country really gives a shit
U.S. Auto Industry Bailed out = HUGE mistake, Romney’s plan was better
Passed Health Care Reform (already ended pre-existing conditions bullshit) = greatest tax hike in history, congrats!
Stimulus Bill prevented depression = laughable
Removed Banks Out of Federal Student Loan Program = sounds good to me
Boosted Fuel Efficiency Standards (this is huge) = great, but gas prices doubled
Credit Card Reforms (can’t raise rates without notice)= good, needed to be done
Stronger Pay Equality Laws = ok fine.
On pace to reduce defense spending $450 billion = someone has to pay for the freebies
Regulated shitty for-profit colleges = yes, profit is a dirty word.
Increase funding for Broadband Coverage = nobody cares
Eliminated restrictions on Stem Cell Research = very small % care
Economy / Jobs / Unemployement are the main issues. Romney keeps hammering on that, he has a shot. 40 month unemployement over 8% is unacceptable.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
To hear conservatives talk about it, Obama inherited something that was rolling along beautifully, fell asleep at the wheel and suddenly we’re at 8%+ employment.
and to hear dems talk about it, everything from the economy to diarhea is bush’s fault. just a thought- we know bush was bad, get off your ass and correct it.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
No, austerity has always failed always which is the common method of trying to reduce debt. Without confidence in the private sector everyone is buying government bonds, that money needs to fuel public work campaigns creating infrastructure and taxable wages.
Higher tax rate does not hurt GDP or employment recoup that money to spend on education, science and engineering programs.
Reduce the rate of incarceration which is a tremendous cost and contributes to unemployment when companies use prison labour at $1 an hour to manufacture paint and other goods while preventing ex-cons from every receiving gainful employment.
Military costs of $2100 per person are outrageously high, cut that.
Tax politician lobby income at 99%.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
Bush was an awful, awful president. Conservatives know this, and for evidence you need look no further than the GOP convention where he wasn’t even invited to speak. Romney is terrified to mention his name on the trail, and with good reason. It’s toxic.
The fact is that economic crisis happened on Bush’s watch. It was a disaster of epic economic proportions. Something that bad happening to an economy this large doesn’t get fixed overnight, or even in months or a year or two.
Frankly, given the historically low level of cooperation Obama got from Congress – who, you might remember from 8th grade civics class, has to pass any bills Obama wishes to enact – it’s minor miracle we’re below 10% unemployment. It should be obvious to anyone paying attention, which fortunately for Republicans amounts to very few people, that Republicans in Congress are more than willing to sacrifice a couple of points of unemployment to get Obama out of office.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
That’s kind of the point. And news flash America: The president has abso-fucking-lutely nothing to do with gas prices.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
THIS president isn’t responsible for high gas prices, but the former president was.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
Just because people used a bad argument in the last administration doesn’t mean people should use it now…this “They did it too” stuff is the laziest of political discourse
October 4th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Huh? No he wasn’t whatsoever. Do tell how he was responsible.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
To Big Hoss and anyone else who apparently thinks that Obama has been the only POTUS to deal with a recession.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Unless you’re being facetious, which you probably are.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
I like how people say gas prices have doubled since Obama took office, forgetting that they’re the same as just before Bush left office.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Yeah no shit professor. I guess Obama didn’t realize what he was getting into then when he promised to cut the deficit in half in his first term and DECREASE unemployement. Obama took a 55 win Astros team and won 60 games the following year. Doesn’t mean he’s done a good job.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Never a good idea to pick a lawyer just because he’s a legacy. Booger taught us all that with his hapless defense in Revenge of the Nerds 3: The Next Generation.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
I wasn’t suggesting austerity. Austerity does fail. You can reduce the debt without resorting to austerity measures. I don’t know, maybe not fighting two wars at once that are unpaid for while building a fleet of drones to expand wars to other countries, allowing tax cuts that have been going on for far too long to expire.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
October 4th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
The fact is that economic crisis happened on Bush’s watch. It was a disaster of epic economic proportions. Something that bad happening to an economy this large doesn’t get fixed overnight, or even in months or a year or two.
and you do realize that half of the mess we are in are because of 2 laws clinton appealed/passed at the same time, right?
October 4th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
I’m not a WSJ subscriber, but an op-ed from Phil Gramm isn’t proving any points, especially considering he helped sign into law one of catalysts to the 2008 collapse.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
Smart man Reagan, knew that deficit spending was the way out
October 4th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
Reagan was a Keynesian followed that plan with dramatic increases in government spending, Obama can’t even get jobs for veterans bill through congress, remember he had 4 months.
Absurd to complain about Obama not doing enough for the economy when measures to fix it are against your political dogma and the GOP congress obstructs it at every facet.
Also if unemployment was lower gas would be more expensive, so which one is it?
Tough to have meaningful discourse when all you can do is describe the reality of a situation in a sea of ‘lulz teleprompter,”president make gas bad wallet hurt, why wallet hurt’ low information voter be-shittering.
October 4th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
Are you going to dispute the facts at hand in the column, or dismiss it in its entirety based on its author?
October 4th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
Like I said, I’m not a subscriber so I can’t read it, but on the surface I’d take it with a grain of salt when the guy writing it had a lot to do with what caused the second recession.
October 4th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
It was complete deregulation of the derivative market within the dogma of the free market guiding itself that led to the biggest disaster. Even if every single homeowner foreclosed it would not match the amount banks over leveraged themselves in that ‘rational, invisible guiding hand, best of all possible words’ free market.
/than Obama hired Larry Summers I was like the fuck?
October 4th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
Sure it does. It isn’t a sexy soundbite for a debate, but if Obama inherited a 55 win team and only won 60 the next year, it’s also fair to say the team to say that team was doomed to win 40 games without the actions Obama spearheaded, with no help whatsoever from a hostile opposition party.
You can’t argue about debt/deficits in a disaster like this, then bitch about unemployment and the state of the economy. It’s a circle that can’t be squared.
October 4th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
Yeah, deficit spending, not deficit freebies and giveaways. Throwing money at the problem does no good unless you know where to throw it and who to throw it to. Creating a welfare state isn’t the answer, Hope and Change boys.
October 4th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
I don’t really understand what people think adding a viable third party is going to accomplish.
———
An alternative to two people who think:
*The government should be able to spy on it’s citizens without a warrant.
*The government shouldn’t prosecute the epic fraud perpetrated by bankers and Wall Street, which crashed the world’s economy.
*Your tax dollars should go to defense contractors, not the citizenry.
*And dozens of other agreed upon stances, which are a detriment to the citizens of the U.S.
I hope this helps.
October 4th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
dunno, i was just speaking on mittens’. i dont think either are great ideas, but don’t have a good alternative myself so i guess im just emptily bitching at mitt’s expense.
October 4th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
LOL, yeah all those unemployment benefits are pretty horrible. Definitely not nearly as admirable as Reagan’s “No Defense Contractor Left Behind” policy.
October 4th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
I miss the Whigs
Great band.
i have give em a big fat lip. love it start to finish
October 4th, 2012 at 4:20 PM
Stana Katic. Very hot indeed.
As for the guy with the Republican wife due to fiscal conservatism, who feels she has no one to vote for: unless you in six states, you can write-in the candidate you prefer. That’s what I’m doing.
