let’s be realistic about this. say you’re in a donut shop. 8 people, 2 cashiers behind the counter. various people spread around the room, a few at the counter, a couple at the tables. a gun man walks in, you’re at one of the tables, people running around, he demands all the cash in the drawers, waving his gun around, on the otherside of the gunman both cashiers are frozen with fear and in the line of fire if you were to take out your firearm and open fire. are your skills that good, when you’re faced with a life and death situation to not only effectively draw the weapon and take out the shooter without him discharging his weapon, without hitting one of the cashiers in the line of fire, or without missing him, having yourself and the other people in the room having an increased chance of being shot by a gunman with an itchy trigger finger who just got shot at from behind?

And to this I should add that Mitt has given the Obama campaign plenty of material to work with this in that respect. I always assumed most concealed carriers did so not because they wanted to save the general public in the unlikely event of a crazed gunman, but because they wanted to protect themselves and their family if they were threatened individually. I got no problem with that.

I wish I didn’t know people who explicitly got conceal carry permits because they think it’s cool or worse because their boyfriend got one and they want to be more like them or even worse because of there being too many black people in the neighborhood, but I guess that’s on me for knowing too many sacks of shit. I wouldn’t trust them with a firearm around me for anything.

I trust my friends that are former police officers, my father and friends who are combat veterans (oh you’re a support staff member in the Guard, great, get the fuck away from me with your gun), and the guys I know who have done time. Of course they are, and I’m not trying to suggest otherwise. What I’m saying is that for the modern Republican campaign, that’s all they’ve got. Nobody likes their ideas, they haven’t governed effectively in 20-30 years, and if they start to sound sane the conservative media (and thus their base) will turn on them.
