Average Republican, no. The people that voted in the Dixiecrats and now vote solidly Republican in the very Red State South, absolutely. This is why I think the Republican party is in a lot of trouble as a national party. Too many different groups with different agendas under one party.

Do I think that the Dixiecrat agenda of pro-segregation and opposition to civil rights is alive and well in many aisles of the republican party? Yes I do. The average republican? Hell no.

Not to defend Jimmy Chitwood here but the 3/5 thing is very often misconstrued as meaning “we only saw blacks as part of a human.” It was just a compromise in determining population numbers for delegate purposes as the north only wanted free peoples to count toward delegates – that is, your slaves aren’t free, so why should you get more delegates because of their presence?

right, and the slaves only counted as 3/5 of a vote when election time came around. then when they were freed and the 3/5 compromise was ended voter disenfranchisement targeting the poorly educated former slaves and low income poor minorities to make it more difficult to vote came about until the voting rights act of 1965 made it illegal to do so. what we are seeing with voter ID laws is a thinly veiled attempt to prevent a certain group of citizens who historically vote for a certain party an easy way to vote.

am i against voter ID, if it’s free and the federal gov’t sends out ID’s and creates a non partisan review board to handle disputes at the election booths when a citizen comes without an ID, preserving the right to vote all US citizens have without disenfranchizing voters with laws that make it more difficult to vote? Yes i am. will that happen b/c voting is considered a state responsibility? no, so i’m against it as states will do this kind of shit to deliver votes for their party, either dem or republican.

People mistakenly assume that the racist southerners wanted to count the freed slaves as only 3/5 of a human being, thereby de-humanzing them. In actuality, the folks from the northern states pushed to count them as less than a whole person in order to minimize the official population of the southern states. People nowadays equate 3/5 with racists, but they are ignorant about it’s origination.

That’s wrong too, though.

Originally it started with the AoC, the north wanted to include slaves in population terms for determining the tax burden of each colony. The southern colonies bugged, so the north suggested 3/4 and the south suggested 1/2, Madison suggested 3/5, but the amendment ended up dying anyway.

So it started with the south wanting them to count for half a person when counting them would be to their detriment, and then upping the number when it would count to their advantage. Saying the northen states “pushed to count them as less than a who person” is laughable. They saw no reason to give a non voting population a count in determining the representation that a population would get. If the slaves couldn’t vote, didn’t make sense for the south to benefit from their numbers.
