Interesting line to draw from Aikman to Namath, two of the most highly coveted pro prospects of all time. Neither one’s a fraud, Namath was legitimately great early in his career. He is a product of the Bear Bryant system, though, so maybe his stats were inflated.

Smith has had a great September, regardless of competition. 20 TD and 0 INT is ridiculous. Of course, they will need that type of production against better teams since their defense can’t stop anyone.

But:

1. The competition has been suspect.
2. The system will always provide gigantic numbers to the QB.
3. WVU’s lousy defense allows for Smith to keep throwing and keep piling up numbers. A better D would actually cost him stats.
4. The Defense Optional Big 12 limits the impressiveness of the numbers going forward. Remember Landry Jones stats? How great is he?

Collin (two L’s) Klein is a really great runner for a QB so that’s a pretty weak analysis. He’s not other-worldly fast but he’s great at finding room and is the size of a DE so he’s usually giving out more punishment than he’s receiving. He’s not slow for a QB, btw, just not a burner

Texas Tech losing 65-21 to Oklahoma didn’t help that season and thus Sam Bradford claimed the prize…Harrell did finish 4th so it’s not like all of Leach’s QBs were ignored by Heisman voters

is he really better than some of the guys on Bama or is it because Notre Dame isn’t that good of a team so he stands out?

He’s the best in the country. Sam Montgomery might have a say. Bama is loaded, but they’re young, not quite Teo’s level…yet.

do you have a problem with RGIII winning last year on a 3 loss team? If your boys at Maryland had a competent coach and a quarterback, perhaps they could have beaten West Virginia.
