Heisman 2012 Power Rankings Week Five: All About Geno Smith
Geno Smith [QB – West Virginia] How does one distance himself from the competition? Completing 45/51 for 656 yards and eight touchdowns. Geno Smith has thrown for 1,728 yards and 20 touchdowns (with no interceptions). That was only September. The silly “system quarterback” cabal will come after him, but quarterbacking is running a system, and Smith is doing so to perfection. The NFL Draft crowd is going bonkers already.
Aaron Murray [QB - Georgia] Murray should emerge as the SEC regional candidate. He had a solid game against Tennessee, completing 19/25 for 278 yards and two touchdowns. He’s third nationally in passer rating. He’ll hit the traditional 3,000 yard and 30 touchdown benchmarks. A good season gets to the podium, but he may need an SEC title to eclipse Smith.
Collin Klein [QB - Kansas State] He’s an efficient, though not great passer and an effective, though not great runner. He won’t have spectacular stats, though Heisman voters are susceptible to stories. Another 10-win season for Kansas State would be a great story to sell. That won’t win him the trophy, but it may get him to New York.
E.J. Manuel [QB - Florida State] Manuel posted another decent performance against South Florida, throwing 19/25 for 242 yards and a touchdown. He has a 9-1 TD to INT ratio on the season. FSU going undefeated helps, though the soft schedule could hurt Manuel going forward. No one will credit him for torching bottom-feeder ACC teams in second gear. He will need a late swing with iconic performances against Florida and in the ACC title game.
De’Anthony Thomas [RB/WR - Oregon] The Black Mamba may be the fastest player in football, but he has expended his error margin. Opposing defenses have contained the past two games. He has just one touchdown and has not broken a play longer than 15 yards. He’ll be avalanched by “What happened?” stories if he does not bounce back in his next game.

October 2nd, 2012 at 12:23 PM
Needs more Micheal Mauti.
I’ve watched all of these guys play. Good players, wouldnt call any of them great.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:23 PM
from the closet.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:27 PM
This nickname could mean so many things
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:27 PM
Murray’s going to get it pushed in this weekend down in Cackalacky
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:28 PM
i thought Kobe was the black mamba

Braxton puts up 350+ yards this week and gets back in the conversation after Geno falters this weekend.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:40 PM
WWoS – shame it isn’t totally legit. She is fantastic
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:42 PM
so at this rate, we can assume that someone is going to offer a more ludicrous deal to draft Geno than the Skins did for RGIII? And where does everyone stand on the Skins trade offer after 4 games of RGIII?
/legitimately curious
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:43 PM
I sure hope so.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:43 PM
Great move IMO.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:44 PM
Texas still covers.
someone needs to return respect back to that state after last night.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:44 PM
Really? Smith played a Pop Warner defense and he gets Heisman talk?
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:44 PM
Geno can be exposed if your team has a legitimate pass rush. Last year, Chandler Jones and Syracuse beat the shit out of WVU.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:45 PM
He’s better than I thought, but its still early. He’s less of a chucker than I believed but still takes a lot of hits for his size.
I really dont think Geno is in the same class, but who knows.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:45 PM
I’ll ask this again: why is Geno Smith not being dismissed with the same “system” tag as Graham Harrell, Case Keenum, etc? He racks up a ton of yards against awful defenses in an offense totally designed to pass. If its fair for other guys, why not Smith? And if its unfair, why is Smith the exception?
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:46 PM
Covering point spreads. Quite the high expectations Sir Mack has developed.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:46 PM
JayV – i’ll be in Columbia Saturday.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:46 PM
because he’s not a white system quarterback…….
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:47 PM
Small sample size, but the guy is much further along than I thought.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:47 PM
Yeah, he’s a black system QB. I’m not sure what the difference is.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:48 PM
It’s early. 70 points and unreal stats move the needle! He still has to play TCU, Texas and OU.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:50 PM
Graham Harrell, Case Keenum, etc
not sure SMU plays a schedule with such prestigious teams as WVU, regardless of the defensive ability of those teams. and i’m almost certain Harrell’s numbers are nowhere near what Smiths were in Sept.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:50 PM
Geno Smith is a very talented QB, and should be in the Heisman race. But he put up numbers on Baylor. That same Baylor defense gave up almost 300 yards passing to a marginal D-IAA QB.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:50 PM
I still love TBLs Jeff Tuel dark horse call
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:51 PM
ill, harrell played at Texas Tech.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:51 PM
Do those teams have “Big 12 defenses” too?
I keed. I realize the stat line was absurd but I watched a lot of that game and it was mostly Smith throwing 10-yard slants that his receivers took past defenders 80 yards to the house. That’s if there was even a defender in the area to miss a tackle.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:53 PM
Keenum went to Houston.
WVU played powerhouses Maryland, Baylor, Marshall, and JMU, all at home. I’m not sure why he’s considered a Heisman favorite.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:54 PM
the heisman is about numbers..not who you beat.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:55 PM
ill, harrell played at Texas Tech.
i know that. i meant keenum, who went to Houston, not SMU (like there’s a difference).
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:55 PM
Thanks for not putting Manti Te’o in your top 5. He may be a fine player, but one should not be considered a serious Heisman candidate simply because your grandma and girlfriend died.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:56 PM
ms621 is going to kill you.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:56 PM
I guess being the best defensive player in the country doesn’t count either.
Noted.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:56 PM
fixed
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:57 PM
If only his last name was Tebow.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:57 PM
is he really better than some of the guys on Bama or is it because Notre Dame isn’t that good of a team so he stands out?
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:58 PM
Then why didn’t Graham Harrell, Timmy Chang, Kase Keenum and Ty Detmer win Heismans?
It just seems like with everything college football, we contradict ourselves and create double standards to make things fit.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:59 PM
Beating the 8th ranked team by at least a touchdown is perfectly in line with expectations.
October 2nd, 2012 at 12:59 PM
Yet Geno Smith is the frontrunner for torching JMU, Maryland, Marshall and Baylor. Gotcha.
October 2nd, 2012 at 1:00 PM
nobody ever took Houston, Hawaii, and Texas Tech seriously. As for Detmer, I don’t remember what he was like in college. I was probably too young.
October 2nd, 2012 at 1:01 PM
Ty Detmer did win a Heisman…that Google search for confirmation only took 5 seconds
October 2nd, 2012 at 1:01 PM
They’re this week’s Stanford. Texas will kill them.
October 2nd, 2012 at 1:02 PM
do you have a problem with RGIII winning last year on a 3 loss team? If your boys at Maryland had a competent coach and a quarterback, perhaps they could have beaten West Virginia.
October 2nd, 2012 at 1:02 PM
Chang and Keenum were on non-BCS teams….and Detmer: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=ty+detmer+heisman
October 2nd, 2012 at 1:04 PM
He’s the best in the country. Sam Montgomery might have a say. Bama is loaded, but they’re young, not quite Teo’s level…yet.
October 2nd, 2012 at 1:04 PM
Well, we are talking about the Heisman.
/ No defenders allowed
/ Woodson won it for his returns, not his CB play
October 2nd, 2012 at 1:05 PM
That Tech team was a National Championship contender…
October 2nd, 2012 at 1:07 PM
Texas Tech losing 65-21 to Oklahoma didn’t help that season and thus Sam Bradford claimed the prize…Harrell did finish 4th so it’s not like all of Leach’s QBs were ignored by Heisman voters
October 2nd, 2012 at 1:10 PM
Woodson won it for his returns, not his CB play

Next week’s Heisman Power Rankings will feature a freshman RB in first place. The Heisman isn’t about stats, it’s about needle moving. Duke’s 250+ yds and 4+ TDs this weekend in Chicago will set the sports media world ablaze.
October 2nd, 2012 at 1:13 PM
Like to see Geno against a pass rush, he’s had all day all year.
/Aikman also system Quarterback, system of having perfect pass protection
October 2nd, 2012 at 1:15 PM
Collin (two L’s) Klein is a really great runner for a QB so that’s a pretty weak analysis. He’s not other-worldly fast but he’s great at finding room and is the size of a DE so he’s usually giving out more punishment than he’s receiving. He’s not slow for a QB, btw, just not a burner
October 2nd, 2012 at 1:19 PM
miami vs notre dame this weekend. I can only pray for a meteor
October 2nd, 2012 at 1:28 PM
That’s why he’s in the Namath Wing of the HOF.
/ FRAUD
October 2nd, 2012 at 1:45 PM
Smith has had a great September, regardless of competition. 20 TD and 0 INT is ridiculous. Of course, they will need that type of production against better teams since their defense can’t stop anyone.
But:
1. The competition has been suspect.
2. The system will always provide gigantic numbers to the QB.
3. WVU’s lousy defense allows for Smith to keep throwing and keep piling up numbers. A better D would actually cost him stats.
4. The Defense Optional Big 12 limits the impressiveness of the numbers going forward. Remember Landry Jones stats? How great is he?
October 2nd, 2012 at 1:52 PM
Interesting line to draw from Aikman to Namath, two of the most highly coveted pro prospects of all time. Neither one’s a fraud, Namath was legitimately great early in his career. He is a product of the Bear Bryant system, though, so maybe his stats were inflated.
October 2nd, 2012 at 2:19 PM
JMU was at FedEx Field.
