Tim Tebow is Not the Answer For the Jets, Replacing Mike Tannenbaum at GM is
A 34-0 drubbing at the hands of the 49ers has predictably fired up the pro-Tebow contingent.
Here are some people who think it’s time to bail on Mark Sanchez – who has done himself no favors, completing an embarrassing 49 percent of passes; he’s got a 69.6 rating, one of the worst in the league – and give Tim Tebow a shot!
Earlier today Mark Sanchez had a rough game for Jets– 2.8 Total QBR. He’s had 5 games with Total QBR of 5 or less, most in NFL since 2009.
— ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) October 1, 2012
Because yeah, Tim Tebow makes sense against the Texans! And Tim Tebow could have done something against the 49ers!
There isn’t any really obvious reason not to put Tebow out there for the second half. #Jets
— Mike Greenberg (@Espngreeny) September 30, 2012
Yes, that would have turned the game around! Ass.
Sanchez should be starting QB vs Texans on Monday night. If he performs poorly for 4th consecutive gm, NYJ should make a change & try Tebow
— Manish Mehta(@MMehtaNYDN) October 1, 2012
Sanchez struggled in Pittsburgh – where most QBs do – then in Miami (but he got the job done!), and then at home against arguably the best defense in the NFL. What, he’s magically going to do well against the Texans? What if Keller doesn’t play again and neither does Holmes or Hill? Oh, and we haven’t even mentioned the offensive line woes. Give him time – like he had against Buffalo – and a healthy TE/WR group and Sanchez can be a solid QB. He was more than serviceable in his first two years in the league playing a key role on a team that went to two AFC title games.
That’s just a tiny snapshot from twitter. Here’s an column from Mike Freeman at CBS Sports. Quote from a player: “We’re gonna get the [Tim] Tebow stuff all week, I know,” the Jets player said, “so here we go. It’s going to start right away with you [expletives] in the media.” Sadly, that player is right.
Here’s the laziest Tebow column (so far) and I’m shocked it wasn’t written by that hack Gary Meyers:
He should make one. Bring on Tim Tebow. At this point Tebow, who saved the Broncos season last year, can’t be any worse than the jittery Mark Sanchez. Perhaps the Jets will get some leadership from the most important position on the field.
But wait! Some sanity! Thank you, Tim Smith of the Daily News:
Sanchez didn’t make this mess. He’s just caught in the middle of it, and he doesn’t have the tools to dig the Jets out.
The Jets unraveled with four turnovers and a lack of execution in all three phases. No NFL team is going to overcome that.
The current state of the Jets and the lack of talent at the skill positions must be laid at the feet of Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum and his player personnel department. If you believe the Jets have the necessary talent to compete with the likes of San Francisco, then you’re deluding yourself. And if you want to remain delusional, then you have to say that the coaching staff can’t put together a game plan to utilize the talent they have.
Finally! I’ve been railing against Tannenbaum since April. Last year, the fall guy was the inept offensive coordinator. This year, it will be Tanenbaum. He cannot be in charge of personnel decisions this offseason. New York will have a Top 10 pick. They have over half a dozen crucial free agent decisions to make. As I’ve written for months, he’s been a disaster after a good start several years ago. The last two years he’s made all the wrong moves. Glad the media is starting to going after him.

Doesn’t matter who the QB is, they both suck and so does the team.
October 1st, 2012 at 2:52 PM
Agreed with the headline. Not going to pile on. At this point, that’s probably too easy.
I have a legitimate question, and would love just a yes or no answer. Would you trade Sanchez for Tannehill straight up right now?
October 1st, 2012 at 2:52 PM
And someone earlier today had the temerity to ask if JMonk was going to post something on the J-E-T-S. I believe this makes post #2 today.
October 1st, 2012 at 2:53 PM
Are there enough receivers on the roster for Tebow to lead into traffic and get injured?
October 1st, 2012 at 2:53 PM
Have you ever written a Sanchez article that didn’t mention that he participated in two AFC title games?
October 1st, 2012 at 2:54 PM
Granted, I don’t live in NYC, but is anyone really saying this? Or is this more of just a headline-page-view-grabbing post?
October 1st, 2012 at 2:54 PM
By being bad he helped make the mess, there’s a middle ground here
I don’t think this is a thing anymore

Depends. What level of syphilitic dementia have I reached?
October 1st, 2012 at 2:54 PM
I knew J-Mac would come through.
Of course. He magically did well against the Steelers in the playoffs last year. It’s that simple.
I would think he could have gone a long way towards preventing it by performing adequately.
October 1st, 2012 at 2:54 PM
Pfft. Make Tebow the GM. Problem solved. He’ll be no worse than the incumbent.
/thank yew, thank yew
October 1st, 2012 at 2:54 PM
It was quite enjoyable to watch this game yesterday.
October 1st, 2012 at 2:54 PM
Sanchez is the worst starting QB in the league. The only one that can make a case for being worse is Cassell.
/more than one word
October 1st, 2012 at 2:54 PM
That’s a lot of blood on Sanchez’s hands.
Bottomline, Tebow may not be the answer, but Sanchez most definitely is a problem. Zero improvement and has regressed. Jets will move to Tebow and he will at least bring some hope/confidence in his team mates.
October 1st, 2012 at 2:55 PM
I am more interested in whether the Sanchize has participated in any Eva Longoria tittie games.

October 1st, 2012 at 2:55 PM
Fitzpatrick had 4INT’s yesterday? YEEEEEEESH.
October 1st, 2012 at 2:55 PM
If I was an opposing defense against the Jets, I might actually prefer facing Sanchez. You know he’s going to make mistakes and there’s nothing dynamic he offers.
At least with Tebow there’s some kind of threat and the playcalling can get really goofy and some unpredictable shit is going to happen.
October 1st, 2012 at 2:55 PM
Carson Palmer put that myth in a sleeper hold.
October 1st, 2012 at 2:55 PM
TBL,
You’re so brave and off the wall!
I think we should move the team to LA too. I for one am sick of the Jets being the worst football team in New York City.
October 1st, 2012 at 2:56 PM
The only time Sanchez was good was when he wasn’t in the position to make plays and carry the team (back when the D was nearly dominant the running game was good). Now, we’ve seen Sanchez for what he is – an average game manager.
October 1st, 2012 at 2:56 PM
I’ve been railing against Tannenbaum since April
only two years two late. It’s at least one more season of the Sanchize and Santonio Holmes because of this moron.
Take heart, though, all but one or two teams in the NFL have major offensive line problems.
October 1st, 2012 at 2:56 PM
Save us Tebus!
October 1st, 2012 at 2:56 PM
No Polamalu or Harrison for the Steelers that game. He was too afraid of getting hit to throw a catch-able ball to a receiver after the 1st drive.
October 1st, 2012 at 2:56 PM
Bill Barnwell again speaks truth, this time regarding Sanchez’s regression
October 1st, 2012 at 2:57 PM
Fox showing Tebow repeatedly during the 2nd half was laughable. As was them showing the replays of the blocks he made when lined up in the backfield. I hate the media in this country. Just useless blowhards.
October 1st, 2012 at 2:57 PM
Carson Palmer put that myth in a sleeper hold.
That game was in Oakland… I see the point you were trying to make though.
October 1st, 2012 at 2:57 PM
Now, we’ve seen Sanchez for what he is – an average game manager.
if that is how you have him rated, then you have him overrated. He’s a below average game manager.
October 1st, 2012 at 2:58 PM
How would Al Jazeera cover Tim Teblow?
October 1st, 2012 at 2:58 PM
Bill Barnwell again speaks truth,
I need a grass roots campaign to get that guy to unblock me on twitter, so I can get back to hassling him. Thanks in advance for your support.

Would you trade Sanchez for Tannehill straight up right now?
I think Tannehill’s pretty good. Not Manning/Brady level, but I think he’ll be on the Carson Palmer (pre-injury) level. So, better than Sanchez. He’s got better tools, at least.

I’ve ignored any Jets stuff today until now. So wow, the Texans this week. Can we get two consecutive shutouts? That would be super.

First and foremost, the problem with the JETS is that guy in the center of the picture. Enough said.

October 1st, 2012 at 3:00 PM
Sanchez is the worst starting QB in the league. The only one that can make a case for being worse is Cassell.
I would also want nothing to do with Carson Palmer, Josh Freeman, or that kid in Seattle.
October 1st, 2012 at 3:01 PM
what is a game manager? what does that even mean? Doesn’t turn the ball over? this appears to be one of those terms the talking heads at ESPN have come up with because they don’t have any other praise in their useless analytical terms box to go to. a game manager sounds like they make sure the kickoff happens on time.
doesn’t the OC/Head coach call most of the plays for teams not quarterbacked by Peyton Manning? Seems like Peyton is the only one worthy of this term.
October 1st, 2012 at 3:01 PM
Not sure about that, just yet. I’m pulling for Wilson, but he’s hardly lit up the scoreboard in Seattle. Weeden? Kolb/Skelton? Fitzpatrick?
Anyway, Jason was loudly anti-Tannehill when doing his mock drafts last year, so I (as a Dolphin fan) was wondering if he had re-evaluated his position.

October 1st, 2012 at 3:03 PM
Game manager = take the snap, turn around and hand the ball off or throw three-yard curls because you suck too much to do anything else.
October 1st, 2012 at 3:04 PM
doesn’t the OC/Head coach call most of the plays for teams not quarterbacked by Peyton Manning?
almost everybody calls two plays now, right? And the QB audibles to a second called play, if he wants to?
October 1st, 2012 at 3:04 PM
/clapping for Blane Gabbert somehow avoiding being mentioned to this point
October 1st, 2012 at 3:05 PM
Sanchez has no recievers -> Jets trade for and resign SB MVP WR
Sanchez has horrible OC -> he gets scapegoated and new OC is brought in
Sanchez has no OL (other than those two all-pros) -> Hunter is traded away
Sanchez has no talented around him bc of bad GM -> TBD
Seems like there is 1 constant in all this.

HTH is a Dolphins fan? I had no idea. A lot of people were anti-Tannehill (it screwed up my very obvious pick for the Cardinals in the mock draft so I’m a little bitter) before the draft but I’ve been making the argument continuously for a year now that the new rookie rules mixed with the way the game is played now make it worthwhile for teams to take a shot on a big-time QB. QB importance is amplified right now to a degree it has never been and the dollar cost of a high draft pick is low enough now that you could pretty much take a QB every year in the 1st round until you get it right. That’s why I thought the Redskins trading up for RGIII wasn’t a bad move for them

October 1st, 2012 at 3:21 PM
It really is this simple. I remember a certain Panthers team that had some stout defenses and a bed-wetting hayseed for a quarterback, and look where that franchise went. A bad QB is also a liability for the defense; see having to prevent 34 points from being scored every week with limited rest during the game.
^^^This. We get it, he didn’t fuck up a few times in his career. With that said, isn’t there a shelf-life on how long you can keep mentioning that? If it were my team, I’d rather not reference those two failures to reach SB’s or to get back to the playoffs.

unless Woody Johnson is like the Fords and Tannenbaum is like matt millen, then it will be a very fun time for all the other AFC East teams.

After years of playing Madden I am convinced I can do a better job.
1. Trade vets for as many 2nd round draft picks
2. Stay the hell away from Free Agent players over 26 or top players
3. Build with draft picks
4. Fill in roster through Free agency on the cheap
4. Trade or release anyone over 28 with a contract demand
5. Draft as many players with over 90 speed possible
6. Running quarterbacks throughout depth chart
7. 3-4 defense is cheaper to field
8. Punter/Kicker is the same guy, who gives a fuck go for it every time
9. Championships

Instead of over analyzing, the truth is that everyone outside of the delusional Jets fanbase was right about them all along. They were overrated, backed into the playoffs one year, and beat a NE team that was horrid on defense in the other AFC CG year. Rex is a great D-coordinator, an average head coach, and the front office is a joke. The Jets were a 2 year flash in the pan, and it’s over. Simple as that.
October 1st, 2012 at 3:53 PM
That’s where the wheels came off. Top bruising running backs are pricey and the cheap ones fumble, just get some shithead with 93 speed and hands for screens and to play Slot WR (Rainey, Best). With a WR skilled Tight End you can run the spread and audible into a power I if need be. Running game is mostly just short passes and handled by the QB (need at least two running QBs as they will get fucked up).
Kinda like the Eagles offense minus the shitty play calling and dead people.

Granted. I guess it was a poorly constructed question. I guess I was more interested in Jason’s opinion on their talent and careers going forward.
I’m guessing from the tone of his response that if their contacts were equal, he would prefer Sanchez.
Laughably, Tannehill probably has the better receiving corp to work with. It may not even be close if you factor in the running back.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:15 PM
I would agree Sanchez has not shown progression. Still too inconsistent. Would a running game help? Sure. Would a better, reliable cast of WRs help? Sure. Would the 2009/2010 offensive line help? Most definitely.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:15 PM
The opener was against Buffalo, which has one of the worst defenses in the NFL. Any QB looks good with tons of time. Sanchez can’t do anything once he doesn’t have five seconds to throw.

I’d say he’s pretty consistent, we’re now past 50 starts and he’s still bad…having the occasional great game against a bad team doesn’t mean he’s inconsistent, it just means single game outliers exist
October 1st, 2012 at 4:23 PM
agree on the contract extension. i was not for it.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:25 PM
Especially since it wasn’t needed. What was the point of that, to boost his self confidence? The Raiders make moves like that, not the Jets.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:28 PM
I was so happy when the Ravens didn’t hire Rex Ryan as HC because he lacks any sort of management skills. His schitck only works when a team is winning. Start stumbling and his dickhead attitude, poor game-management skills and lack of discipline get old real fast.
He’ll be a great D-coordinator somewhere after he’s fired (I hope the Ravens sign him the second he gets canned) but as a head coach he’s a disaster.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:30 PM
he is fundamentally bad with decision making and reading defenses.
you know what probably could have helped him? more development in college. but oh well, he’s going to get paid millions to be shitty at his job while i get paid one of his game checks for doing a great job.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:39 PM
They should just re-name the NFL GM position to “cross your fingers and hope you draft/trade/or luck out on a Qb.” I know it’s a bit long, but it’s fitting.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:40 PM
Would it help if Sanchez had a penis? …… no
October 1st, 2012 at 4:44 PM
Not really. GMs are mostly stupid. They convince themselves that QBs with middling college success will somehow “figure it out” once they get to the pros. So they waste money and time trying to turn a turd into Elway and the franchise suffers.
The reason teams like Pittsburgh and Baltimore and New England and Philly are always good is because they don’t chase crap QBs and draft good college players that fill a need.
You don’t need to find a Brady to win in the NFL.

Mostly I’m friendly.

Philly has been pretty shitty as a team when their QB play is less than excellent so I’m not sure they make a great case for “you don’t need a QB.” I’m exceptionally certain that Pittsburgh doesn’t make that case. And the Patriots might have won 11 games with Matt Cassell but that season was a pretty pale comparison to the season before. Baltimore you can argue til the end of time but Flacco isn’t a horrible QB, even if he isn’t great.

Match him with Norval as OC, and you could hire Linus Van Pelt as HC. Plus, your reality TV potential would be thru-the-roof.

Rex is mid level management material; specifically in shipping and receiving.

Jason, do you still feel Sanchez is a QB the Jets can consistently win with?

Sorry to hedge … but i don’t know. I know this – they are locked into him this year and next year for big bucks. No shot at a trade. Can’t cut him – too much of a cap hit. So they’re stuck. I’d try to make the most of it – OL, RB, WR and let’s see what he’s got. After next season, sure, you can cut bait if he still is not improving.
