Homer Bailey Wishes ESPN Would Pay Attention to the 2012 Cincinnati Reds
Homer Bailey, the Cincinnati Reds pitcher who tossed a no-hitter Friday night, thinks his team – which will make their second postseason appearance in three years – is getting no love from ESPN. He ranted to the media over the weekend:
“No one’s even paid attention … You don’t hear about that on ESPN. We keep hearing about (the Reds in the 70s). Nobody’s talking about this team, this rotation, the things we’ve done, the amount of quality starts, the innings. Four guys over 200. Five guys making every start. Johnny Cueto about to go for his 20th win. He was in Cy Young contention.
“Nobody’s paying attention to it. Nobody’s paying attention to how our bullpen is probably the best in baseball.
“We come here last night and there’s (34,000) people. We go back home and there’s only 20,000. We’re a first-place team with a bunch of exciting things going on — whether it’s Todd Frazier going for Rookie of the Year or Joey Votto going for a batting title or Johnny Cueto up for a Cy Young. A rotation full of guys that day in day out take the ball.
“I don’t think we necessarily try to get attention. But I think what everybody is witnessing with this team is pretty special. It shouldn’t go overlooked.”
The “here” referenced above is Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh! Where the sad sack Pirates locked in another losing season (some of us, cough, saw that coming). How are the lowly Pirates out-drawing a 96-win team that has the biggest division lead in baseball? I wonder if, when the postseason TV schedules are revealed, Bailey is left slackjacked when the Reds are playing mostly in the afternoon and not on ESPN. [Cincinnati Reds Blog]

Having an absolutely killer ballpark doesn’t hurt
October 1st, 2012 at 10:21 AM
I had to look that word up. this is what google gave me. thanks?

Plus Cincy’s park kinda sucks, was pretty disappointed in that place
Also ESPN hasn’t televised postseason games since what, 2006?
October 1st, 2012 at 10:22 AM
Uh…they’re not. Ever heard of checking facts?
October 1st, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Is he wrong? No, but espn has always been about Boston and New York. The reds have to win in the playoffs to warrant attention, something they haven’t done in a while.

Holy shit, baseball expert!
October 1st, 2012 at 10:24 AM
Dude has a solid point here. I don’t watch ESPN, but MLB Network isn’t exactly talking about them as much either.
This team has been at the top of the division most of the season, and because it is such a shitty division, 80 games against Cubs, Astros, Pirates are not going to get much excitement.

The White Sox are a good ball club….
Tigers have a pretty good shot to go the the WS. 2nd favorite after Texas.
October 1st, 2012 at 10:25 AM
Went there three years ago and have the same sentiments.
October 1st, 2012 at 10:25 AM
Hey Reds, do something in the postseason then you can run your mouth
October 1st, 2012 at 10:26 AM
PNC Park in Pittsburgh is my favorite ballpark. Not a bad seat in the house
October 1st, 2012 at 10:26 AM
Show your work please…I think they’re terribly mediocre and if Szerz4drfer doesn’t come back that rotation is even weaker past Verlander

Wait until his “Charlotte Bobcats Probably Won’t Make the Playoffs” NBA preview.
October 1st, 2012 at 10:29 AM
None of the AL teams are playing well enough right now to beat the Giants, Braves, or Nationals.

The White Sox are a good ball club….
Whaa???

Yea, I’m going to need this too.

Im rooting for a Yankees-As wild card game. Might be fifty homeruns hit in that game
October 1st, 2012 at 10:32 AM
dude should just be happy they are winning, they could be like the pirates who were contracted years ago after a string of losing seasons.

Verlander, Fister and Sanchez are all throwing very well right now. Who do they Yankees have past CC? Tigers bp is really good right now and they have Miggy and Fielder.
October 1st, 2012 at 10:33 AM
Both teams are outdrawing every single NBA team, I’m guessing, despite having twice as many home dates.
October 1st, 2012 at 10:34 AM
The Reds lack sizzle. And as Kramer told us long ago, you don’t sell the steak, you sell the sizzzzzle.
October 1st, 2012 at 10:34 AM
Homer’s not wrong. All you hear about is the AL East race and who is going to get the NL’s 2nd wildcard.
As for the Red’s ball park, they built it to big – nearly 45,000 capacity. It’s three pretty large levels, when they could have done with two. Also, avoid the Christian Moerlein brewpub across the street fromt the ball park – beers are $$ and not good. Food also sucks and there’s not much of it. I ordered a fried pickle and go a quaret of a pickle – like 6 pickle chips – for $7.

I was with Bailey’s statements up until he brought up his own fans not coming out to the park. Maybe if your manager didn’t bring up the fact that they’d rather be in 3rd place (would rather lose) than be in 1st or 2nd, then you fans might care about the game. Not to mention last week’s weather was piss-poor. Reds’ attendance was highest at GABP since 2003 (opening of the stadium).
October 1st, 2012 at 10:36 AM
So how pissed was Hawk Harrelson this weekend?
October 1st, 2012 at 10:36 AM
People still named their kids Homer back in the 1980s? We need more Gus’s in this world.
October 1st, 2012 at 10:36 AM
Vlad, CC hasnt even been their best pitcher this year. He’s been good the past two starts but was getting rocked for a couple months (and also injured a couple times). Kuroda has been their most consistent guy and now he’s faltering. There is nobody on the yanks right now that is a lock to do well in the playoffs. Sure, Pettite is back but…its not the same as a few years back
October 1st, 2012 at 10:38 AM
He makes some good points. Still, it’s Cincinnati and they wont the worst division in baseball. There’s no story there. Right now its about the AL races. Once the playoffs begin Cincy will get some attention.

Reds are the best team in baseball and do get ignored, he’s dead on.
Also great call on the Pirates collapsing. What are your thoughts on Huntington and Hurdle going forward? No googling who they are.
October 1st, 2012 at 10:40 AM
They need to feel the pressure and trade sexy prospects for Choo and Perez.
October 1st, 2012 at 10:41 AM
Posnanski had a piece about him after the no-hitter. It’s a nickname, his real name was David or some shit
/ mondays
October 1st, 2012 at 10:42 AM
TBL: Well Huntington needs to develop a bit more. I think he can be a future all-star
Hurdle? To be honest I think he maxed out. i would trade him for some prospects.

What are you basing that on? Their schedule is a joke. They have a lot of talent but would struggle to make the playoffs in better divisions.
October 1st, 2012 at 10:43 AM
For some reason, I feel that St. Louis is going to come to Atlanta and easily win the play-in game
October 1st, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Wow. No. AL Central and it’s not even close.
October 1st, 2012 at 10:46 AM
Don’t forget Votto missed a bunch of time.
October 1st, 2012 at 10:47 AM
They have the two best players in baseball in their division and until they went on an insane streak and then the Pirates collapsed, that division was a four team race. The Cubs and Astros merely existing shouldn’t pull it down.
October 1st, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Also let’s be honest, if it’s the Cubs in their position, they’re getting as much attention if not more than anyone else. It’s not because of the division, it’s because of the market.
October 1st, 2012 at 10:48 AM
I hope you change that to National League and quick.
October 1st, 2012 at 10:49 AM
Agree with others on the park. It was underwhelming for sure. Fans have no identity either. It was like a baseball movie of people cast to be fans. Could be they were just from Ohio, though.
October 1st, 2012 at 10:49 AM
+ however many points you can carry
October 1st, 2012 at 10:49 AM
Fatass Cabrera and Junky McJunkerstein down in Texas can suck it.
October 1st, 2012 at 10:52 AM
Cubs, Astros, Pirates. All terrible. AL Central is pretty bad, though.
Cant believe more people aren’t furious at this stupid wild card setup where Atlanta is going to have to win a do-or-die “play-in” against a team with eight less wins. Fucking absurd.
October 1st, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Yea, pretty terrible. This is obviously Bird Seligs fault. If only he were a better commissioner.
/narrative’d
October 1st, 2012 at 11:02 AM
I mean, it’s kind of his fault. You can’t credit Selig for baseball’s financial success then dismiss all the dumb shit he does. He’s either responsible for the sport or he’s not.
October 1st, 2012 at 11:05 AM
Hawk Harrelson will go on a season ending rant about how mlb fucked the white sox over
