College Football AP Poll Dissection: Week Five
Nebraska and UCLA Again: UCLA and Nebraska have the same record 4-1. UCLA has played a tougher schedule. The Bruins’ best win is better. Their one loss is to a better team. Most importantly, UCLA BEAT NEBRASKA HEAD TO HEAD. There is no argument for putting Nebraska ahead of UCLA right now, yet 32 voters did so.
Northwestern: With so many sports media alums, how did it take Northwestern this long to get ranked? Are they the best team in the country? No. Is a 5-0 record with four wins against AQ conference teams a better resumé than a few teams in front of them? Absolutely. 58/60 voters have Oklahoma higher ranked. Explain that one.
No Moral Victories: Baylor lost a shootout on the road by one score to West Virginia, a team AP voters determined was the 8th best team in the nation. Only two voters, Andy Staples and Mike Hlas, had Baylor within 15 places.
The Inimitable Jon Wilner: (Takes deep breath) Wilner has Notre Dame and Kansas State in the top five, ahead of Florida State and LSU. He has Michigan (14), six places higher than the next highest voter. He has Michigan State at (16). He is the only voter with Texas lower than (14) at (22). He is the only voter with Tennessee (23) ranked.
Glenn Guilbeau: Guilbeau finally departed the Wisconsin bandwagon, dropping the Badgers from his Top 25. He’s still holding a candle for the Big Ten, however, with both Michigan State (19) and Michigan (20) in the Top 20. He jumped Washington from off the board to (12) and kept Stanford (13) just behind them. He’s one of three voters with Notre Dame (14) lower than (12) and is the only voter with Florida (18) lower than (15).
Losses Ignored: Josh Kendall has Clemson (11) and Washington (12). He still has Michigan State (19) and Arizona (22) ranked.
Popular in Ames: Iowa State lost by 11 at home to Texas Tech, but Ray Ratto remains on the bandwagon. He has the Cyclones at (23), the only voter to still have them ranked, ahead of Texas Tech. Transitive property after Iowa’s big win over Minnesota?
Finally: Scott Wolf has seen enough. He has moved LSU down to (2) and replaced them on the top with Alabama. He is the lowest voter on West Virginia (15) and Notre Dame (16).
Most Overrated: Oklahoma (17). The Sooners’ best (and only) FBS win was pulling away in the fourth quarter against UTEP, a team outside the SRS Top 100.
Most Underrated: Louisiana Tech (unranked). Sonny Dykes’ team is 4-0. Three of the wins were on the road, two came against AQ teams including a blowout of Illinois in Champaign. 42/60 voters

Dont really have a huge problem with that. LSU hasn’t beaten anyone and looked really shaky the last few weeks. KSU and ND have legit resumes. FSU beat Clemson but their schedule is atrocious otherwise.

Should a voter vote completely based on resumé after one week? Of course not. After two? No way.
Serious question, Duffy, since you write these columns every week. When should a voter vote completely based on resumé? I’ll phrase it another way: When teams have played 4 games and usually 2 or 3 cupcakes, how much should they weigh their vote on results and how much on their estimation of a team’s talent?
October 1st, 2012 at 4:17 PM
(Takes deep breath)
It is a meaningless poll after the fourth week of a long season, Duffy. Take a deep breath. Exhale. It’ll be ok.
/I’ve been informed I get a free sandwich now.

When teams have played 4 games and usually 2 or 3 cupcakes, how much should they weigh their vote on results and how much on their estimation of a team’s talent? Hackker
You consult the handy SRS ratings.

58/60 voters have Oklahoma higher ranked. Explain that one.
Voters think that Oklahoma would beat Northwestern by 30+
October 1st, 2012 at 4:20 PM
I like that idea (since the Horns are ranked #2). They are also number two in the more accurate looking (at least to me, at this point) FEI ratings.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:20 PM
Washington just beat Stanford unless this is going to lead to a string of shit where it turns out every team is bad
October 1st, 2012 at 4:21 PM
How bout them Beavers?
October 1st, 2012 at 4:22 PM
most overrated: Notre Dame
October 1st, 2012 at 4:22 PM
Hacker –
I don’t know. It has Kansas ranked 88th and I’d be hard pressed to find 22 worse teams in the country. However, I use preconceived notions and my eyes when ranking teams. But, never before the middle of October.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:23 PM
Pat Fitzgerald. Great coach.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:24 PM
wanna add this, from the other post. The block quote is from Clayton.
my thoughts:
really? have you really hit rock bottom?
you get blocked for being a douche by him, i’ve banned you at least once … at what point do you look in the mirror and say, “i need to get a grip?”
October 1st, 2012 at 4:25 PM
Yeah when you look past the top 10 you see seriously flawed teams. As far as I am concerned there are about 40 25th ranked calibre teams.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:25 PM
Fucking reporters.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:26 PM
most overrated: Notre Dame
The loss this week should knock them down a few spots in the rankings
October 1st, 2012 at 4:26 PM
What guy blocked Dirt on Twitter?
October 1st, 2012 at 4:27 PM
Bill Barnwell, NFL writer for Grantland who’s very good…reasons still unknown but this is like watching parents fight
October 1st, 2012 at 4:28 PM
at what point do you look in the mirror and say, “i need to get a grip?”
He hit that point once and it killed a small part of the internet for me. Don’t ban him again, it’s boring. Even if he asks for it again
October 1st, 2012 at 4:29 PM
NW beat 4 AQ teams – BC, Vandy, Syracuse, and Indiana. Of the 70 or so “AQ” teams these 4 are probably in the bottom 10-15 or so. And they needed a BS roughing the passer call to beat Syracuse. Let’s not go crazy on NWestern just yet.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:29 PM
Don’t get WWOS started on Barnwell…I don’t think he’s a big fan either.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:29 PM
oh. yeah. not happening. ND has a nasty defense this year. should carry them through the entire season.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:29 PM
I would imagine it would be on the low extension of one of your curl sets when the weight starts to slip from your hand. I presume you’re backlit in this hypothetical, yes?
October 1st, 2012 at 4:30 PM
Stark – so when Dirt isn’t around being Mr. Angry Young Dad, it’s boring? What, everyone should be subjected to his constant stream of you suck, this post sucks, everything sucks, i think I’m funny, ha ha?
if you’re getting blocked by a lot of people on twitter or on websites or facebook or whatever … don’t you think maybe YOU’RE the problem?
October 1st, 2012 at 4:31 PM
Fwiw LSU has been pretty mediocre other than the Washington game, but all they really have to do is stay unbeaten and they’ll get a slot in the title game. The lack of style points the last 2 weeks doesnt mean much if they beat Bama on Nov 3.

I got blocked from editing Wikipedia articles for continually vandalizing the Metallica page, and while I normally would agree with you, Metallica is the problem here, not me.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:32 PM
i dont even know if i’m a fan of barnwell. i think i’ve read him a few times. can’t remember one thing he’s written.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:34 PM
I personally like Barnwell’s stuff. I think he usually makes solid observations about the NFL.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:35 PM
Stark – so when Dirt isn’t around being Mr. Angry Young Dad, it’s boring?
It loses a little bit of flavor. He’s a pretty funny guy. It’s the same thing with Spencer, Jersey, Rex, Rusty, Taguchi, et al. The comments are better when those guys are around and it’s more fun to hang out here

Have we heard yet how he and JMac’s pizza dinner meet up went?
October 1st, 2012 at 4:35 PM
I wish I could be me around here
October 1st, 2012 at 4:35 PM
Barnwell’s a balder, fatter Lisk…could be a good interview subject with those two bouncing thoughts off each other unless months of CRM mocking Grantland has made this site an enemy of theirs
October 1st, 2012 at 4:37 PM
hate to play the “what happened” card, but Clayton like 2 years ago used to email in links, we corresponded via email, and he seemed normal. at some point, he flew off the handle and has hated the site (everyone?).
he obviously likes and follows sports and he’s passionate. but why the vitriol? what does it accomplish?
October 1st, 2012 at 4:37 PM
So Duffy whines about NW being ranked behind Oklahoma based on resume, then literally one inch (actual measure, not column inch) later is whining about ND and K-State being ranked ahead of Fla St and LSU, who have the worst resumes of any top 10 teams. I’m confused.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:39 PM
He got admonished by Traina last night too
October 1st, 2012 at 4:39 PM
maybe he was hanging with Hawkeye? He’s an angry fella. Alcohol will do that to ya.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:39 PM
I got blocked for editing Chef Boyardee’s page claiming he drowned in the over-washed driver flood of 1994 when Brazil beat Italy in penalty kicks. Italy’s fault.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:39 PM
Probably Duckworth’d
October 1st, 2012 at 4:39 PM
I think Alabama crushes them. LSU doesn’t have an offense.
Barnwell is OK. I like that he generally digs beyond the ESPNazation of football to provide some good analysis. His column the other day, though — Joe Flacco benefited a lot from his defense early on in his career — was pretty stupid. Yeah, no shit. Most winning QBs don’t succeed with a shit supporting cast.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:40 PM
Read that as John Clayton first and was really confused, then realized it was Dirt, then imagined he is actually John Clayton.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:40 PM
Found it, last paragraph. Wikipedia is humourless.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:41 PM
Craig James tells everyone he got banned from Twitter because he was “too edgy,” but he really just forgot his password (it was GetInTheShed).
October 1st, 2012 at 4:44 PM
Miami +13, you’re welcome
October 1st, 2012 at 4:45 PM
He got admonished by Traina last night too
Ha. That guy checks his mentions pretty often. I mean, like, constantly. He admonished me once for making a kind of standard joke at the expense of some extreme stance on something (I know, a little bit too specific. I really don’t remember what it was, though) In short, if you want to be admonished by somebody, disagree with Traina on any topic that he posts about.

I look forward to the #Duke4Heisman articles next week.

hate to play the “what happened” card, but Clayton like 2 years ago used to email in links, we corresponded via email, and he seemed normal. at some point, he flew off the handle and has hated the site (everyone?).
notice again how when I stopped sending in the links is exactly the same time I got angry.
October 1st, 2012 at 4:58 PM
Wasn’t it two years ago that you originally sold the site? I wonder if that had anything to do with it.
Or maybe he thought you changed and was worried that something was going on at home while being unsure of what it was you did for a living?
October 1st, 2012 at 5:02 PM
Kind of funny you used to be the teacher’s pet. Didn’t you even do a Roundup once, Dirt?
October 1st, 2012 at 5:04 PM
Didn’t you even do a Roundup once, Dirt?
no joke, the guy hired me for like two months. And then never “fired” me, just quit paying me.
October 1st, 2012 at 5:06 PM
We all live Lisk, right? I mean, except for the fact the he took BSanders job…
October 1st, 2012 at 5:06 PM
It could be worse. One summer during college I got a job at a store. 2 weeks later I come home from college to start the job, walk in on my first day, and the manager has no recollection and says there isn’t a job for me. so..fuck Tractor Supply Company
October 1st, 2012 at 5:08 PM
I more like him. Don’t really want to live him, though
October 1st, 2012 at 5:12 PM
That’s just wrong, meng.

October 1st, 2012 at 5:41 PM
I love how a non AQ gets credit for demolishing Illinois and Virginia, but an AQ team would have beaten “no one of note”. Can’t have it both ways.
October 1st, 2012 at 5:44 PM
surely would have been long, lame, and unfunny. surely.
Kind of like TBLAD?
