Fantasy Football Start ‘Em and Sit ‘Em, Week 4: Josh Freeman is a Deep Sleeper Against Redskins
We are going to start doing a start em and sit em segment with the Top 15 at QB and TE, and Top 30 at RB and WR. Feel free to send questions for future segments. I will also update these rankings once the actives for the early games are announced, to reflect any actives and inactives that change things.
Today, your biggest start of the day is Josh Freeman. Over the last two weeks, Sam Bradford and Andy Dalton have averaged 319 yards and 3 touchdowns, finishing 2nd and 6th respectively in that week’s QB scoring. That doesn’t even include Mohamed Sanu’s deep bomb to A.J. Green to start last week’s game. Freeman hasn’t looked great so far, but it’s not like Bradford has lit up teams not named Washington. He should be in your top 10 based on matchup.
QUARTERBACKS
- Tom Brady vs. BUF
- Aaron Rodgers vs. NO
- Matt Ryan vs. CAR
- Robert Griffin III vs. TB
- Peyton Manning vs. OAK
- Drew Brees vs. GB
- Matt Schaub vs. TEN
- Josh Freeman vs. WAS
- Matt Stafford vs. MIN [Stafford should go today with the hip injury]
- Carson Palmer vs. DEN
- Michael Vick vs. NYG
- Christian Ponder vs. DET
- Tony Romo vs. CHI
- Cam Newton vs. ATL
- Eli Manning vs. PHI
SNEAKY DEEP STARTS: The sneakiest start is Freeman, who goes against a Washington team that has made Sam Bradford and Andy Dalton among the top starts the last two weeks. Shaun Hill, Detroit vs. Minnesota (on the assumption Stafford is ruled out), Russell Wilson, Seattle vs. St. Louis, Kevin Kolb vs. Miami
BIG NAMES TO AVOID: Jay Cutler vs. Dallas secondary, Philip Rivers against a Chiefs defense getting healthy, just put lots of pressure on Brees.
RUNNING BACKS
- Arian Foster vs. TEN
- Maurice Jones-Drew vs. CIN
- Ryan Mathews vs. KC
- Frank Gore vs. NYJ
- LeSean McCoy vs. NYG
- Jamaal Charles vs. SD
- Marshawn Lynch vs. STL
- Willis McGahee vs. OAK
- Stevan Ridley vs. BUF
- Adrian Peterson vs. DET
- Benjarvus Green-Ellis vs. JAX
- Alfred Morris vs. TB
- Darren McFadden vs. DEN
- Cedric Benson vs. NO
- Mikel Leshoure vs. MIN
- Michael Turner vs. CAR
- Ryan Williams vs. MIA
- Doug Martin vs. WAS
- DeMarco Murray vs. CHI
- Reggie Bush vs. ARI [Jason LaCanfora says Bush will go unless there is a setback, concerns over matchup, limitations, and whether he plays have him down here]
- Darren Sproles vs. GB
- Andre Brown vs. PHI
- Fred Jackson* vs. NE
- Jonathan Stewart* vs. ATL
- C.J. Spiller* vs. NE [Update: Spiller and Jackson both to play]
- Steven Jackson* vs. SEA
- Chris Johnson vs. HOU
- Ben Tate vs. TEN
- Michael Bush vs. DAL
- Pierre Thomas vs. GB
BIG NAMES TO AVOID: Ahmad Bradshaw should play, but how effectively? Matt Forte may play, but it is a tough matchup and he may not get full carries. Shonn Greene goes against the best run defense in the league. [NOTE: Reggie Bush is questionable and a game time decision, if you have to make calls by 1 PM, be conservative there]
SNEAKY DEEP PLAYS: Jacquizz Rodgers could continue to see more touches in a decent matchup against the Panthers. Daryl Richardson if Steven Jackson is ruled out for the game against Seattle. Kendall Hunter may benefit from the 49ers focusing on the run game, and the Jets trying to adjust their defense without Revis. Shaun Draughn could see more action if Peyton Hillis is officially ruled out, especially a week after Charles had 33 carries.
WIDE RECEIVERS
- Calvin Johnson vs. MIN
- Larry Fitzgerald vs. STL
- A.J. Green vs. JAX
- Julio Jones vs. CAR
- Percy Harvin vs. DET
- Andre Johnson vs. TEN
- Roddy White vs. CAR
- Demaryius Thomas vs. OAK
- Vincent Jackson vs. WAS
- Wes Welker vs. BUF
- Victor Cruz vs. PHI
- Jordy Nelson vs. NO
- Steve Smith vs. ATL
- Brandon Lloyd vs. BUF
- Greg Jennings vs. NO
- Dwayne Bowe vs. SD
- Denarius Moore vs. DEN
- Danny Amendola vs. SEA
- DeSean Jackson vs. NYG
- Jeremy Maclin vs. NYG
- Dez Bryant vs. CHI
- Eric Decker vs. OAK
- Miles Austin vs. CHI
- Marques Colston vs. GB
- Brandon Marshall vs. DAL
- Mike Williams vs. WAS
- Randall Cobb vs. NO
- Michael Crabtree vs. NYJ
- Steve Johnson vs. NE
- Ramses Barden vs. PHI
BIG NAMES TO AVOID: Brandon Marshall has that tough matchup against the Dallas corners, though unless you have plenty of good matchups elsewhere you may have to start him. Malcom Floyd goes against a Chiefs secondary in better shape.
SNEAKY PLAYS: Jerome Simpson comes back from suspension and gets a good matchup in Detroit, could add a big play. Kevin Walter has a fantastic matchup and Andre is nursing a groin injury, but should play, and Walter could see a good number of targets. Andrew Hawkins continues to provide value in the slot.
TIGHT ENDS
- Vernon Davis vs. NYJ
- Jimmy Graham vs. GB
- Rob Gronkowski vs. BUF
- Tony Gonzalez vs. CAR
- Kyle Rudolph vs. DET
- Owen Daniels vs. TEN
- Brandon Pettigrew vs. MIN
- Martellus Bennett vs. PHI
- Antonio Gates vs. KC
- Brent Celek vs. NYG
- Jason Witten vs. CHI
- Brandon Myers* vs. DEN
- Greg Olsen vs. ATL
- Jermichael Finley vs. NO
- Jacob Tamme vs. OAK
SNEAKY DEEP PLAYS: Dallas Clark against the Redskins porous pass defense.
AVOID: Jared Cook with the tough matchup at Houston.

Jason-
Stafford or Ponder today?
September 30th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Stafford if it is confirmed he is going, though it is a closer call. Ponder is definitely a decent start this week, and may be the safer option.

Bears fan w jaded fan-view here, agonizing over starting GB DST at home vs Saints this afternoon or Bears DST @ Dallas on MNF.
I’m sure GB DST is the obvious choice of the 2 this week, even though Bears DST has outperformed them by 4 points on average this year, only underperforming against GB DST in their head-to-head matchup where CUtler was giving away points.

well, not sure that GB is the obvious choice, I just sure that I have a history of getting burned picking w my heart…..

Kind of surprised that, given how high you are on Freeman (rightfully so), Mike Williams doesn’t get a mention/rank at WR.

I have Williams ranked at #26, and there’s very much difference between 18 and 30 on the list. Have V-Jax in top 12.

Steve Johnson or Jerome Simpson at WR? Thanks for the help

Lisk – Would it be crazy to start Draughn over Turner? I have Charles. Romeo seems to sway with public perception and he got it this week by running Charles so much last week (he had no choice.) Also, I hate Turner.

2-1 in the early games … maybe 3-1 if the Rams can hold on.
