NL Cy Young Award: R.A. Dickey, Right?
R.A. Dickey, the Mets’ 20-game winner who throws a mean knuckleball, seems to be the popular pick for the NL Cy Young award. Dickey, who turns 38 next month, is one of the best stories in baseball this season. But will his tremendous season result in a Cy Young?
While the traditional stats/saber stats discussion dominates the AL MVP debate, will we see the same discussion when it comes to the NL Cy Young?
Here are three saber categories that figure to be in the discussion for the NL Cy Young award:
FIP:
Gonzalez 2.84
Strasburg 2.84
Kershaw 2.99
Lee 3.07
Wainwright 3.15
Miley 3.21
Dickey 3.25
Cueto 3.27
ERA+
Cueto 149
Kershaw 143
Dickey 142
Lohse 140
Gonalez 139
WAR
Cueto 5.7
Kershaw 5.4
Dickey 5.3
Gonzalez 4.6
And now for a more traditional stat:
ERA:
Kershaw 2.68
Dickey 2.69
Lohse 2.77
Cain 2.77
Cueto 2.83
Gonzalez 2.89
It seems to be a 4-man race – Dickey (who also leads the NL in strikeouts with 222 and complete games with five), Gonzalez, Kershaw and Cueto. My guess: baseball writers love a good knuckleball, and Dickey will be your winner.

Yes it’s Dickey. The complete games and strikeouts put him over the top.
September 28th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
I hope Dickey wins it. The guy’s story is unbelievable.
This is the first time I think I’ve ever rooted for a member of the Mets to succeed at anything.

NL Cy Young Award: R.A. Dickey, Right?
It depends on the ratings the Mets get while he is pitching when going head to head with the only NFL game on a Thursday night.
September 28th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
There is also some crazy stat about him and CG 1-hitters, but it escapes me.
September 28th, 2012 at 1:42 PM
Give it to the guy who draws better ratings.
September 28th, 2012 at 1:42 PM
Dammit, Res beat me to it.

And future advice if you’re going to use FIP TBL, use xFIP which normalizes for home runs.

I’m waiting to see who Rob Parker endorses
September 28th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
Remove the innings qualifier, and Craig Kimbrel blows the field away in FIP, ERA, and ERA+.
September 28th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
Yeah, but what kind of ratings do the Mets get?
September 28th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
I guess I should really read the comments first
September 28th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
This.
Although I did admire Doc on his heyday. Guy could bring it.
That was offset by the nauseating Darryl worship, though.
September 28th, 2012 at 1:49 PM
Yet they totally fucked over Niekro at least twice in Cy Young voting.
September 28th, 2012 at 1:49 PM
first 10 comments, and we already have 3 bashing the previous post. the inmates are running the prison today, bitches.
September 28th, 2012 at 1:49 PM
i just don’t like to see the mets winning anything, so my vote is anyone else.
yeah, but what are you having for lunch?
September 28th, 2012 at 1:50 PM
Incredibly close race. I think it’s between Cueto and Dickey. I think if Cueto wins his last start(puts him at 20 wins), then he might pull it out because his team will be in the playoffs but it’s a 2-man race in my mind.
Has a knuckleballer ever won a Cy Young? And how long until the positive PED test comes out on Dickey?
September 28th, 2012 at 1:50 PM
He was my favorite player growing up. He could have been what Bonds was (roiding Bonds) if he kept off the nose candy.
September 28th, 2012 at 1:51 PM
I don’t think that is a fair qualifier. Dickey has won this many games with a shitty bullpen and a shitty team. Far mre impressive in my mind.

anyone else watching the Ryder Cup at watch ESPN? Loving this soft-core porn music during commercial breaks.

I enjoyed the fact that your post involved advanced baseball statistics and wasn’t dripping with condescension. Good post.

My Grandama was a Mets fan and talked about Strawberry ALL the TIME. Anooyed the hell out of me (still love you Grandma). But if Darryl would have existed in the age of internet, he would have been out for his lines of coke and the hysteria over him would have never gotten that far.
September 28th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
He’s a monster. So good.
But yeah, I’m sure Dickey will win it.
September 28th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
Had a grilled cheese sammy and tomato soup. Mmmmmmmmm.
September 28th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
A year or two after he leaves the Yankees.
September 28th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
Also leads the NL in K, CG. 8.78 K/9, 4.11 K/BB. He should win easily.

I’ll give you a pass. My wife turned insane towards the end of her pregnancy, so I understand what you are going through.
/sprints in opposite direction.
//realizes CJ can’t run.
///slows to a stroll.
September 28th, 2012 at 1:55 PM
Patently absurd numbers for a knuckleballer.
September 28th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
Chris Culliver.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
Dickey should get it unmolested

Just hit 6.5 months. Everything looks good so far, but I have been lucky a few times in that I have seen the storm clouds rolling in and was able to change course and avoid everything.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:03 PM
My initial thought on this was “Phil Niekro”, but he never won the Cy during his career.
Niekro was runner up to Seaver in 1969 and 3rd in 1974 (behind Mike Marshall and Andy Messersmith).
/Thanks Baseball Reference!

Yeah, be perceptive. No matter how right you are, you got no base when she is eight months pregnant.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:04 PM
I mean it really isn’t hard, dudes, just dont be a dick to her, dont comment on her weight, do nice things for her around the house. Boom.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:04 PM
So he’s obviously not a Penn State product.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:05 PM
He shoula won in 1982 as well.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
Lefty’s numbers were kinda imposing that year.
The guy that maybe should have won in 1982 was Steve Rogers.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:09 PM

So that day when you officially can’t wear anything you used to because of the belly, your man just has to pick up some stuff and not say anything? Yeah not buying it.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:11 PM
There goes the Wendy’s apple pecan salad.
/notice the product placement?
//pomegranate dressing FTW, baby!
September 28th, 2012 at 2:11 PM
Yeah, but Nucksie helped carry the Braves to a division title, so that had to count for something.
Interesting: when Carlton won in 1982, he had the same record (23-11) that Niekro had in 1969, but his ERA was about a run higher.
I was a Rogers fan back in the day, then he kind of flamed out.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:11 PM
Huh? What’s the alternative? Point and laugh at her expanding waist line, make snide comments about what she’s eating, and yell at her if she hasn’t done the laundry?
September 28th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
Been here a long time. Not sure I’ve laughed as much as today
September 28th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
Turkey wrap dijon mustard. And 320 Wintergreen Lifesaver mints
September 28th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
Huh? What’s the alternative?
Nah all I meant was that it isn’t that simple as just picking up stuff and not making a comment. Only fucking assholes would even think about saying something about the weight gain.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
So SEC coaches talk shit to their pregnant wives about weight gain?
September 28th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
Has there EVER been a flameout like Lincecum’s this year??? (of a player in their prime…in ANY sport?)
September 28th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
I mean, I figure not arguing with a pregnant woman was a given. The tears come a hell of a lot easier nowadays.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
Dickey can’t win the Cy Young. He has too many wins.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
Has there EVER been a flameout like Lincecum’s this year??? (of a player in their prime…in ANY sport?)
see: Johnson, Chris
September 28th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
Those Montreal teams were pretty damned good in the early 80′s. Gary Carter, Al Oliver, Tim Raines stealing a billionty bases, Andre Dawson, Tim Wallach….
September 28th, 2012 at 2:20 PM
Sammy? Please shoot me out of a cannon.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:21 PM
Huge Ellis Valentine fan, before the coke got him. Wore his number when I played in H.S.
Wanted to wear a Ross Grimsley ‘fro, but my hair wasn’t quite long enough.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
I think “sandwich” shortened to “san” is way worse.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
How about Cueto wins because he pitches in on of the biggest hitter parks in the League, and puts up those numbers, while Dickey pitches in a huge ball park that covers up a ton of his mistakes. Dickey also plays for a shit team and has had no pressure on him.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
The internet today couldn’t put Strawberry under as much scrutiny today than the NYC media put him under in the 80′s. He was their whipping boy, and he got it daily from about 10 newspapers, the local tv networks, and a burgeoning sports radio station, WFAN.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
Lincecum still looks like a Hall of Famer when comparing it to the shit-show that CJ1.1YPG is putting on.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
Him, Andre Dawson, and Dave Parker (Pirates Dave Parker; not Reds Dave Parker) always seemed to just kill the Phillies when I was a kid.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:26 PM
I remember when he played for the Mets and threw Pete Rose out at third base on a throw from the right field corner, that reached third on the fly.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
Parker was a beast of a player. He was intimidating just watching on TV. Couldn’t imagine watching him in person, especially when he cut loose a throw from deep right field.
As much as he accomplished, it seems like he coulda done more.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
Chris Johnson might be a worse major contract awardee than Albert Haynesworth. That is incredible to contemplate.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
Parker could hit for power, average…..he had an absolute cannon of an arm (maybe not as good as Valentine’s, but close). He could even run a little bit for a big man.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
Best right fielder’s arm of the 70′s/80′s: Valentine, Parker or Dwight Evans?
They don’t make ‘em like that any more.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
It has to be Cueto – he has the highest WAR and that stat trumps all others.
/Trout-for-MVP
September 28th, 2012 at 2:39 PM
Remember watching that throw when it happened and being absolutely amazed.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:39 PM
Dwight Evans was so underrated as a player.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
Mmmm. Grilled cheese sammich.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
Clemente I guess, even though he barely touched the 70′s.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:46 PM
Saw Valentine play more than I saw the others. I have no real proof, but I thought his was best.
I remember seeing highlights of the throw that got Rose at third. From near/maybe on the warning track – on a line – and reached the 3rd baseman chest high. I was stunned.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:47 PM
Yeah, his career really took a nosedive after 1971.
/ Seau post’d
September 28th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
He really made a splash in ’72, though.
//I kid
September 28th, 2012 at 2:54 PM
He really leveled the planing field.
September 28th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
Nada, you win. I don’t dare go any further. Don’t want to find myself underwater in this exchange…
September 28th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
Stop it. This just won’t fly.
