How Badly Did Recruiting Pundits Miss on the Football Class of 2007?
While working on the Joe McKnight position-change post Thursday, I took a quick glance at the recruiting Class of 2007 and was rather surprised at a) how weak the names were at the top, and b) how badly the pundits missed on the real talent.
Let’s dive right in:
1. Jimmy Clausen – Never lived up to the hype at Notre Dame, but did compile good stats. Fell in the draft despite hype attempts from Mel Kiper … career 3rd string NFL QB, if he’s lucky.
2. Joe McKnight – Bust at USC*, non-factor in the NFL.
3. Eric Berry – The biggest direct hit of this class. Star at Tennessee, budding NFL star with the Chiefs.
4. Ryan Mallett – Was terrific at Arkansas, expected to be an early pick, but off-the-field issues scared teams off. Patriots took him late and he may not see the field until he’s traded.
5. Carlos Dunlap – Nice career at Florida, great rookie year with the Bengals (9.5 sacks). Inconsistency is an issue.
6. Everson Griffen – Good career at USC, underwhelming (so far) in the pros with the Vikings.
7. Marvin Austin – Beast at UNC, but injuries slowed any shot of him having a studly NFL future. Another guy on this list who got hit with the “character issues” label.
8. Ronald Johnson – Never became a star at USC, 6th round NFL pick, riding the bench in Philly.
9. Torrey Davis – Went to Florida, was arrested a couple times, kicked off the team, last seen in Calgary.
10. Josh Oglesby – Injury-riddled career at Wisconsin, never panned out.
Obviously football recruiting is not an exact science. Some players take longer than others to develop. Some need the right coach or system to flourish. Some, like Oglesby, have multiple surgeries. Maybe the early hype for some of these kids leads to inflated sense of self worth, and then they get hit with the “problem” label.
So where were the real future stars from this class? Down the list.
Cam Newton 28 - He was ranked one spot behind Tyrod Taylor, who went to Virginia Tech and is now with the Ravens. Newton went to Florida, then JUCO, then dominated at Auburn and is now one of the bright young stars in the NFL.
Dez Bryant 54 – Tell me if these names mean anything to you – Chris Culliver, Dwight Jones, Duval Kamara, DeAngelo Benton … see what I’m doing here? All these guys were rated ahead of Bryant, who already is an elite NFL receiver.
Joe Haden 59 – Stud cornerback with the Browns flourished at Florida and is arguably one of the five best young cornerbacks in the NFL.
Aaron Hernandez 66 – Not only did the high school pundits whiff on him – so did the NFL scouts! Perhaps due to off-the-field issues, Hernandez fell to the 4th round in the draft.
* For his lofty high school ranking, I thought he was a bust. He did rush for 1,000 yards as a junior.

Of the top 10 high school players, only 8 made it to the NFL?
Wow those pundits blow.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:07 AM
I don’t see how Newton being the third (or second depending on scout service) ranked QB in a recruiting class could in any way be deemed a “miss.”
September 28th, 2012 at 10:07 AM
Getting excited over college recruiting and signing day is a waste of time. You never know how someone will turn out in any respective program.
It is when cash is involved.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
Eric Berry for Heisman!
/rallying cry for 3 years
September 28th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
While that’s true to some extent, the success rates of 5 stars is greater than 4 stars, etc.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
so of the first 7 players listed, the descriptions are “good, star, terrific, nice, good and beast.” only one “bust”, and yet the recruiting pundits missed? I’m confused. did they miss because some of the guys like Cam (who was a factor for 1 year) and the other 3 weren’t ranked higher?
September 28th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
Players ranked outside the top 10 being successful is not a miss. It would be more interesting to see 1-2 star recruits that were successful.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
he was pretty damn good at Notre Dame. The teams he played with were pretty shitty.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
Looking forward to the basketball version.
“Jason Williams – Duke. Possibly the best player they have ever had, attacked the rim like nobody they’ve ever seen, didn’t make it in the NBA, what were the high school scouts thinking?”
September 28th, 2012 at 10:14 AM
Jason, this post is a space-eater, right?
September 28th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
So using bitcoins or whatever could you not just funnel money to a player or his parent(s) without any paper chase from anonymous emails? Or a simple Paypal donate site that funds his account?
September 28th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
Kirk Hinrich – Kansas. Decent player in college, but he’s only had a 10 year (and counting) career in the NBA. Another miss by the pundits.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
An important part of the NFL’s best defense, and likely to play in more Pro Bowls than Dez Bryant.
So, yeah, that name means something to me.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
Though certainly not perfect, they seemed to do pretty good. Based on your headline, I expected 10 names I didn’t know, not 8 NFL players (6 of which were top 100 picks, Mcknight went 112).
September 28th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
I’d say 2 of the Top 10 have an NFL career of more than 7 years.
Berry and Dunlap.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
In your world what does “living up to the hype” exactly mean?
September 28th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
Dez Bryant doesn’t know the plays.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:19 AM
Takes more than two BCS bowl wins according to epic bust Terrelle Pryor.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:19 AM

September 28th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
He didn’t win the three rings he said he was going to win.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
I get that but a guy being a bust in college means the scouts missed, not being a bust in the NFL. Clausen wasn’t a miss, McKnight was.
Also even as a ND fan I think it’s fair to say he never lived up to the hype, but it wasn’t his fault, was the shit teams around him.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
This is a strange post.
2. Joe McKnight – Bust at USC
Not really a “bust” – he was productive but not the second-coming of Reggie Bush. I would not qualify him as a bust though, at all. He carried Mark Sanchez to a Rose Bowl (snickers).
WTF is this bullshit? Dez Bryant has one career 100 yard game. He is absolutely not an elite WR in the NFL. There is no player more unjustly hyped than Dez Bryant.
And Chris Culliver is turning into a very good NFL corner.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
3. Eric Berry – The biggest direct hit of this class. Star at Tennessee, budding NFL star with the Chiefs
Legend. Cues up video of his hit on Moreno at Sanford if I had YouTube working here. Someone lend a link to a brotha.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
Rank-and-file starter at best.
If he can stay on the field he has a chance to be. But right now there are at least 12 guys I’d take ahead of him.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
Like almost all NFL teams nowadays, the Niners play three CBs on the vast majority of their snaps. He covers outside the numbers WRs (the true vertical threats) while Carlos Rogers mans the slot.
So yes.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
He didn’t win the three rings he said he was going to win.
But he did ride in a limo and rocked some sweet gel-hair
September 28th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
Have you paid any attention to the 49ers? Because if you think Culliver isn’t an important part of that defense, I can’t help you. Pretty sure the consensus opinion among 49ers fans is that Culliver is the best CB on the team.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
outside the top 10: Dez Bryant was what, the 7th WR? Cam Newton the 4th QB? He had the greatest rookie year in NFL history, the other guys have done squat.
1-2 star recruits? I’d read that. let me know if you write it, will definitely link it up.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
I had no idea Tyrod Taylor was in the NFL. Apparently his passer rating is 114.6 though so looks like he deserved to be ranked ahead of Newton.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:22 AM
Yes, considering several teams play 3 out of every 4 snaps with at least 3 wideouts.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:22 AM
Which class had a worse top 10, the 2007 class or:?
2002
2003
Sanchez’s class
September 28th, 2012 at 10:22 AM
So I tied an onion to my belt. Which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel corner, and in those days, nickel corners had pictures of bumblebees on ‘em. Gimme five bees for a quarter, you’d say.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
?
at 66 and they “missed?” How many TEs were ahead of him on the scouting list?
September 28th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Mallet easily. Who is 11-25 on this list? Considering the number of college players being ranked (and drafted) I think looking at more than the top 10 would be a little more interesting.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
the nickle corner is an “important part” ???
hahaha… yes.
/packers fans
September 28th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
i don’t think he’s one of the top 5 most important people on that defense. if he’s the best corner, maybe he’ll be starting by the end of the season?
September 28th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
Sniff, sniff. Smells like banhammer in these parts
September 28th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
Truth…Megatron, Fitz, Julio, Nicks, Marshall, Cruz, White, Jennings, Jordy, DeSean (homer pick), Vincent Jackson, and Welker.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
I think so for sure. They often put him on the best downfield threat that the other teams have (Jordy Nelson, Megatron so far this year).
I would say using Chris Culliver as an example as to why Dez Bryant was poorly evaluated shows a lack of knowledge of anything more than Red Zone / fantasy football. Dez has done nothing to justify his standing as an NFL WR to this point, other than give beat writers and the fantasy mafia boners.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
Jason…Culliver DOES start. The 49ers play 3 CBs on almost every possession. Pay attention next time you watch the 49ers, he had an absolute monster game against the Packers.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
If Jor Flacco can be considered elite I see nothing wrong with bestowing the same honor on Dez Bryant
September 28th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
You have no idea what you’re talking about.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
Rivals had him as the number two dual threat QB in the nation.
A five star recruit being ranked the second best player in his position can in no way be classified as a miss, really no clue how you’re missing this.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
1.
“Aaron, you’re the consensus second best person in the nation at your job. How does it feel to fly under the radar?”
September 28th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
And, for everyone’s reading enjoyment, here’s a great story on Culliver
http://www.sfgate.com/49ers/article/49ers-Chris-Culliver-s-brush-with-death-3886769.php
CAVEAT: I’ve gotten fairly close with his mother over the past few years, and in fact, she was at the SC-Mizzou viewing party this weekend. So, yes, I’m biased. But he is already a very good NFL player, this is a fact that can’t be denied.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
“Last season Aldon Smith didn’t start for the 49ers defense. Maybe if he was one of the most important players on their defense, he would start.”
- Jason McIntyre
September 28th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
I guess you didn’t watch the Packers game in Week 1 then?
That’s not even including Percy Harvin, AJ Green, Andre Johnson or Mike Wallace.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:28 AM

September 28th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
no clue? joke’s on you brother…look who you’re talking about.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
If I wanted to right now I could funnel money to any recruit I had there email address and there would be no way to catch me.
1. Email recruit to skype chat
2. Give him new email address access in chat
3. Send money to that new Email address
4. Recruit can use Paypal online for any goods
There are far more sophisticated ways of doing it but that is simple enough for anyone to do.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
what’s this defense that starts more than 2 CB’s you speak of?
September 28th, 2012 at 10:30 AM

September 28th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
Also Tyrod Taylor won two ACC title game MVP awards, one ACC offensive PotY award, and one ACC PotY award. BUST.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:30 AM

Yeah I’d have all of them ahead of Dez as well. So 16 WR I’d have over Dez.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
Jay V – He may have started other games, but not against the Vikings.
29-Chris Culliver: Entered as nickel back and played left corner with the second team. He was called for an 11-yard pass interference penalty in second quarter, but otherwise had a quiet night.

September 28th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
I watch every 49ers game (even the action that happens between the 20s!) because I am fan of the team. Chris Culliver is their best CB. End of story.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
Rough couple days, considering the Jets salary cap debacle yesterday.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
So much LOL here….I haven’t read any of the comments yet, but you know Culliver is in heavy rotation for CB for the best defense in the league, right? And elite? lol….
September 28th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
CAVEAT: I’ve gotten fairly close with his mother over the past few years, and in fact, she was at the SC-Mizzou viewing party this weekend. Jay
So many inappropriate jokes I want to make but I will read the link you sent first.

29-Chris Culliver: Entered as nickel back and played left corner with the second team. He was called for an 11-yard pass interference penalty in second quarter, but otherwise had a quiet night.
What do you consider a non-quiet night for a DB? If you’re not hearing his name it’s usually because he’s doing his job and the QB doesn’t even want to throw his way.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
So much LOL here….I haven’t read any of the comments yet, but you know Culliver is in heavy rotation for CB for the best defense in the league, right? And elite? lol…. jck49
You’ve summed up the comments up to this point. It appears there is a consensus.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Dez “Elite” Bryant’s career per-game averages: 4 catches, 55 yards.
Michael Crabtree’s career per-game averages: 4.3 catches, 54 yards.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Of all the things to dig your heels in on… Chris Culliver?
Sports arguments are the best. So much ego.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:38 AM

September 28th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
Jay V – He may have started other games, but not against the Vikings.
Why can’t you just admit you are wrong? There is no shame in not being able to keep track of every player on every team.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
What do you consider a non-quiet night for a DB? If you’re not hearing his name it’s usually because he’s doing his job and the QB doesn’t even want to throw his way.
There’s a reason deon didn’t have a lot of INT’s… it’s because they weren’t throwing at him. Deangelo Hall has a lot…. FOR A REASON… HE IS TERRIBLE.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
Ding ding ding ding!
September 28th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
But hey, I’m not calling maybe the 17th-best WR in the NFL “elite” so clearly I’m “clueless.”
September 28th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
Why can’t you just admit you are wrong? There is no shame in not being able to keep track of every player on every team.
KC knows what’s up… This isn’t Lebron Kobe.. nobody would fault you if you didn’t watch Culliver play every week.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
Antoine Winfield got jobbed out of several Pro Bowls because he didn’t have the INT numbers. Teams didn’t throw in his direction.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
No idea what his numbers are… but I’d imagine Revis doesn’t have a ton of interceptions either.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
What’s this?
September 28th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
He didn’t start against the Vikings. It’s not a big deal. I’m sure Culliver has a bright future.

September 28th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
Rough couple days, considering the Jets salary cap debacle yesterday.
What’s this
Jets are 6 million under the cap and their best CB just got hurt… why didn’t they spend that 6 million on CB depth…?????! owner must be a cheap ass!
September 28th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
Shit, I didn’t even need to show up. Jay’s got my back.
I don’t need to defend Culliver to anyone watching the games….Jay nailed it on the Packer game, and he’s absolutely better than Brown. Harbaugh uses match ups he likes and doesn’t give a shit about what it says on the depth chart. Randy Moss started the first week too. Mario Manningham is more important though.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
Culliver wasn’t in as much against the Vikings that’s definitely true, mainly because the Vikings weren’t expected to throw the ball that much:
The 49ers spent 79 plays on defense, seven more than in Week 1 and 14 more than Week 2. We can see the difference in the game-plan as Chris Culliver was involved in only 30 plays, after 57 last week and 65 the week before.
Week 1: 65/72 plays
Week 2: 57/65 plays
Starter snap counts for sure.

UC Santa Barbara would be arouse a great deal suspicion though.
UNLV as well should not have missed that.
September 28th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
Ryan Mallett should not be considered a bust since Tom F-ing Brady was pulled for him in their game against the Saints! http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/extra_points/2012/08/preseason_game_2.html

Oh, dear.

Pink? She’s a 5* nasty at best. Hell, Ali Landry donkey stomps her, and she’s not even in your top 4.

This is amazing. “Some guy named” Chris Culliver has brought Jmac down another level. Who woulda thunk?

Carlos could have always had a number of picks, but before last year he had hands of stones. He got his eyes checked from what I’ve heard and that contributed to his interception numbers. He’s not only one of the better cover corners, he’s one of the very best tackling ones.
September 28th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
So many things wrong with this post. *facepalm*
It isn’t the job of rivals.com to project who will play in the NFL. It’s their job to evaluate how talented they are as 18 yr old college recruits. Check out Matt Hintons articles on this topic. He uses math, not warped perceptions, to prove the recruiting services are pretty accurate.
Also, Cam newton was a 5 star recruit.

TBL commentator bizarro survivor pool?
You pick the next commentator banned those who did not pick correctly lose. After someone is banned winners pick anew and so forth.

TBL commentator bizarro survivor pool?
I poured one out for him pre-bannin. That deserves something right?
September 28th, 2012 at 12:20 PM
man, wish i had known who JT Hussler was.
He posted his email address earlier in the comments. Comment 118:

naturally, he moved here and tried to be anon.

September 28th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
I honestly thought jthussler would have been banned months and months ago.
September 28th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
too be fair, you called him a complete moron or something along those lines. kind of unbecoming. what was he supposed to do, not respond to that?
September 28th, 2012 at 12:25 PM
and he was right. but whatever.
September 28th, 2012 at 12:25 PM
None of that makes any of your positions in this post any more defensible.
September 28th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
Since I’ve been given a second lease on commenter life, I am trying my damnedest to not get banned.
September 28th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
yup. if someone said the sky was purple and I corrected them on it, I’d probably be a little pissy if I was called a moron for contending that it was blue.
September 28th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
Again I don’t get this behavior. I obviously disagree with Jason a hot bit but I don’t troll him on twitter, nor follow him, I don’t get why people follow people that they hate. It’s dumb when Rob Delaney does it to a Kardashian and it’s dumb when someone does it to a blogger. Whatever, let’s talk more about Wings. Is the fat guy still alive?
September 28th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
Surely your prescience is gift enough in this contest of foreknowledge.
You can pick yourself and win that round but the victory would be self-immolation as you would unable to continue.
I pick Queefer, that guy is always worth a banhammer bet with the continuing PSU season and up-coming election.
September 28th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
been a busy few months. i can take a lot of anger/comments/bile because … hey, you put yourself out there, be ready for it.
i do like the bizarro survivor pool idea. i totally know the guy who is next, too. (he’s a prick, and many of you, based on comments, dislike him too)

September 28th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
It’s dumb when Rob Delaney does it to a Kardashian
there’s an actress who likes baseball (i think she used to be on the west wing) that did this relentlessly to jose canseco… like, for almost a full 2 or 3 years after canseco had pretty much faded away into obscurity. it almost occurred to me that she had a thing for him the way she obsessed over all of his tweets. caughtoffbase or something was her handle. perhaps she’s a cousin of thebiglead? but yeesh lady, we get it, he’s dumb.

Is he disliked? He makes me laugh almost every time he makes a joke. Which is most of his commentary
September 28th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
Mark me down for Chocolatedunker. He doesn’t come around a lot, but when he does he is always after McIntyre. McIntyre will put up with stuff if you have accumulated some goodwill. Chocolatedunker has not.
Is he disliked? He makes me laugh almost every time he makes a joke. Which is most of his commentary Stark
Is there anyone here that is universally disliked? I can’t think of anyone, but if someone makes me laugh with a well placed dick joke then we are friends for life so maybe I’m the wrong one to ask.
