Of Course Joe McKnight is Pissed About Being Moved From Running Back to Cornerback. The Jets are $6 Million Under the Cap!
Joe McKnight, the high school legend who was hailed as the next Reggie Bush, but flopped spectacularly at USC, continues to struggle with the New York Jets.
McKnight was moved from running back to cornerback this week as the team grapples with the loss of Darrelle Revis. This was his reaction:
“I was drafted as a running back. The way I took it as I wasn’t good enough to play running back; that’s what I took it as. I don’t know if that’s the case or not … It’s been a while since I played cornerback, maybe if I’d played cornerback in college four years. Me playing cornerback in high school does not help right now.”
McKnight has a right to be pissed. He’s the team’s top kick returner, No. 3 running back (in a ground and pound attack that is DOA), they use him in the wildcat, and now he’s going to move to cornerback?
New York’s cheap owner, Woody Johnson, has the team $6.8 million under the cap, and to save money, the Jets are going to try and move McKnight – who is a tremendous athlete – to corner?
Hey, we’ve got a team that was in the AFC title game two years in a row, and after flopping in 2011, let’s operate on the cheap! Yeah! Let’s make McKnight earn his paltry salary of $540,000 by playing multiple positions!
Life as a Jets’ fan. So frustrating. Luckily, the season should be decided in the next four weeks – San Francisco, Houston, Indianapolis and New England. If, as expected, they go 1-3, there’s no way a 2-4 team can recover in the AFC and make the playoffs in 2012. By mid-October, Jets fans will be left debating the following questions:
* Do you want Mike Tannenbaum back as GM? This is a pivotal question because of all the free agents the Jets have to make a decision on.
* Do you bring back Dustin Keller?
* Do you bring back Shonn Greene?
* The following players are unrestricted free agents: Laron Landry, Mike DeVito, Aaron Maybin, Brandon Moore, and Matt Slauson. Who stays?
* What is the top priority in the 2013 draft, OL, QB, WR, LB or safety?

Tannenbaum should have been fired in the offseason
September 27th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
McKnight has a right to be pissed. He’s the team’s top kick returner
Haha. McKnight has a right to be thankful he’s still playing football
September 27th, 2012 at 4:25 PM
The Jets have alot of “tremendous athletes” just not alot of football players.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:26 PM
He might be right, but seriously? Strap on a set, dude. You’re getting on the field when you probably shouldnt be. Just a poisonous team culture there.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
So they have cap room…who are you going to throw money at? The money doesn’t matter.
Also, Shonn Greene next year? That guy should be grateful to collect a check for the remainder of this year.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:29 PM
Would you prefer one playoff win in the last 50+ years?
September 27th, 2012 at 4:31 PM
Keep Aaron Maybin, he’ll quit on the JETS soon enough. I love me some JETS fail.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:31 PM
McKnight has a right to be pissed. He’s the team’s top kick returner
I’ve never heard of a cornerback/kick returner before. I agree, McKnight should be pissed.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:31 PM
I see no problem here. This worked great when the Vikings moved Robert Tate from 5th string wideout to starting (STARTING!!) corner. Wait, that was a complete disaster.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:32 PM
I don’t remember Troy Brown whining when Belichick had him playing defense and he was a much better offensive player than McKnight will ever be. This is exactly why the Jets will continue to suck because they draft all the wrong types of players.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:32 PM
Seems a bit strong, no? He did make the NFL.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:32 PM
Eva Longoria is clearly behind this move.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:33 PM
Both these guys are a dime a dozen.
Landry’s popcorn muscles take priority.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:33 PM
can he not return kicks AND play corner? if he’s the #3 RB, and that is behind S. Greene, he clearly sucks at that position. and why can they not use him at wildcat as well as CB? sounds to me like McKnight needs to change his tampon and be happy he is playing any position, because if it wasn’t CB it sounds like he would be on the sideline.
good post though.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:34 PM
Comments 1-7 pretty much hit every high note on this and any Jets topic.
/SHUT THIS POST DOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWN
September 27th, 2012 at 4:34 PM
Tannenbaum and Woody Johnson are jackoffs. Both should have had the foresight to realize their #1 CB would go down with a a season ending injury and used that $6 million to build some defensive back depth. Now what the fuck are they going to do now?
Behind the 8 ball again.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:34 PM
Jets are currently 2-1. Assume 1-3 in those games, and they just have to beat Miami to head into the bye at 4-4. Then they finish with Seattle, St. Louis, New England, Arizona, Jacksonville, Tennessee, San Diego, and Buffalo. Not a bad second half schedule.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:35 PM
How much does Sanchize have left on his contract?
September 27th, 2012 at 4:37 PM
Joe McKnight reminds me of Devin Hester in that he’s a kick returner with no natural position. He’s like a slower, less talented, less interested, Hester with no heart and no idea when to keep his mouth shut. And he’s worse on both sides of the ball than Hester, too. So he’s a perfect Hester Lite for the Jets
September 27th, 2012 at 4:37 PM
McKnight – who is a tremendous athlete
When does Ashton Eaton get to play for the Jets?
September 27th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
Not sure…but probably a good idea to extend a top 8 QB who led his team to two AFC Championship game participation ribbons.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
can he not return kicks AND play corner?
Hester returns kicks and still plays on offense!
September 27th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
The Jets are 2 & 1, tied for 1st. Ease up on the doom and gloom talk until they at least make the Big Brother Bottom 5.
Which awesome corner are they not bringing in to save money? Mcknight gets it, he is useless as a RB. He is a good KR, so he has a roster spot and the coaches are trying to add value to it.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
whoops, didn’t see stark’s comment.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:39 PM
How much does Sanchize have left on his contract?
Good point. Maybe they should try out Sanchez at CB. There’s no way you can keep paying that kind of money for a guy who keeps getting worse at QB but the cap hit is just way to high to cut him at this point. It’s worth a try
September 27th, 2012 at 4:40 PM
This is the equivalent of the caller on a drive time sports radio calling in to the host and saying “we need to trade for a starting pitcher!” ….. in May. Okay. Assemble a list of good starting pitchers available a month into the season and get back to me.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:40 PM
I think the obvious answer is to have Sanchez return kicks, so McKnight is nice and fresh to play CB.
/make it so
September 27th, 2012 at 4:40 PM
Look at all the “cheap owners” who have even more cap room than the Jets:
September 27th, 2012 at 4:41 PM
Why isn’t the media destroying Tebow for not volunteering to play corner in this time of need?
September 27th, 2012 at 4:41 PM
Burning through $6MM just because you have $6MM to burn is the Daniel Snyder way to run things.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:42 PM
The shareholders are conserving funds for if and when bacon prices skyrocket
September 27th, 2012 at 4:42 PM
New York’s cheap owner, Woody Johnson
Didn’t he go out and sign Brett Favre for like $12 Million a year?
September 27th, 2012 at 4:43 PM
I think the obvious answer is to have Sanchez return kicks, so McKnight is nice and fresh to play CB.
Ah, it was so obvious I missed it. Well, that’s we’re in the comments spit balling, trying to find a solution that works for the Jets. Bart Scott to QB?
September 27th, 2012 at 4:43 PM
Poor Manny Acta. Hello Tito!
/Would rather have Omar
September 27th, 2012 at 4:43 PM
Good idea. Sanchez has learned how to shut down the Jets passing game. Maybe now he can turn his attention to the opponent.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:43 PM
Jets to McKnight: Hey, we’re paying you half a million dollars a year to play a game. We’d like to you to shift to another position to make the team stronger.
McKnight: Go fuck yourselves.
Jets to Nada: Hey, we’re paying you half a million dollars a year to play a game. We’d like to you to shift to another position to make the team stronger.
Nada: How high did you say you want me to jump?
September 27th, 2012 at 4:43 PM
But they have $6.8M in cap room! Give Lito Shepard all of it.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:43 PM
Bears turned a CB into a # 1 receiver.
/never mind
September 27th, 2012 at 4:44 PM
Mike DeVito cannot leave. Absolutely not. Just a classic name for a player on the Jets.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:44 PM
Based on how he interprets the QB position, it’s likely he’d only try to intercept balls that have bounced off the ground at least once.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:44 PM
not to mention the best left handed throwing QB in the NFL.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:45 PM
New York’s cheap owner, Woody Johnson, has the team $6.8 million under the cap, and to save money, the Jets are going to try and move McKnight – who is a tremendous athlete – to corner?
Actually this is Tannenbaum’s plan. He can take all of the money that he didn’t use under the cap this year and apply it to next year so that next year’s cap number is greater for them. Many thought this money was being saved to help with Revis negotiations next year, but with the injury who knows how those go now. They’re saving that money for next year since they’re losing so many guys after this year.
Not saying that’s the best course of action, but that seems to be their thinking.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:46 PM
Hernia, any chance of you doing a Jayson Werth post today?
September 27th, 2012 at 4:47 PM
This just blew my mind…I had no idea you could do this.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:50 PM
PLEASE do.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:50 PM
and to save money, the Jets are going to try and move McKnight – who is a tremendous athlete – to corner?
The part that is hyphened off from the rest seems to underscore the fact that he could make the move with relative ease. Hey maybe that’s why they are moving him.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:50 PM
here’s the link explaining it
September 27th, 2012 at 4:51 PM
here’s the link explaining it
explaining rolling over your cap to the next year that is
September 27th, 2012 at 4:56 PM
Ya, that is the link I google’d to. Had no idea.
It looks like Shahid Khan is looking to move the Jags to LA in 2015, and blow it out with a $300M payroll.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:56 PM
This has the classic makings of a “doesn’t read the comments” post. Lotta rational discussion up in here, and for the most part people seem to be talking TBL down from the ledge a little. Having cap room isn’t a bad thing, and if they want to blow it on something it wont be any time soon. It’s a shame that our “snap out of it, man!” comments won’t resonate with you.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:57 PM
This whole post is just way off base when compared to how the NFL works. This is exactly the type of opinion I’d expect a casual fan to have.
September 27th, 2012 at 4:58 PM
A Woody Johnson post.
Now Waiting for the Fister post.
/Coop
September 27th, 2012 at 5:00 PM
This is exactly the type of opinion I’d expect a casual fan to have.
It was very Red Zone-y, now that you mention it
September 27th, 2012 at 5:00 PM
Does it really matter if the Jets are $6 mil or $600 mil under the cap…are there any out-of-work corners out there worth more than $60 and a 6 pack of Meister Brau?
September 27th, 2012 at 5:01 PM
Pretty much.
I don’t mind that the Eagles have that much cap space. They have often used that money to give out contract extensions, in season, and avoided nasty off-season holdouts.
September 27th, 2012 at 5:03 PM
Can we get some beer talk going up in here?? I picked up a bomber of Arrogant Bastard the other day, and was NOT disappointed.
September 27th, 2012 at 5:04 PM
Yeah, this is almost as bad as a Bill Simmons column on football.
September 27th, 2012 at 5:05 PM
I would say that, but I enjoy the Red Zone channel.
September 27th, 2012 at 5:05 PM
Use the 6 million to sign Steve Austin. Problem solved.
September 27th, 2012 at 5:07 PM
I don’t think you need emphasis on ‘under’. Over the cap isn’t really an option this time of year.
Plus what a terrible idea… no successful team could ever move an offensive player to CB to replace injured starters.
September 27th, 2012 at 5:07 PM
Is “derpwad” a word? Can it be?
September 27th, 2012 at 5:08 PM
And BrawnyTom correct me if I’m wrong, but you always want cap space remaining to cover unexpected/expected bonuses so they don’t count against next years cap, right?
September 27th, 2012 at 5:08 PM
Rahr Oktoberfest is pretty damn good.
September 27th, 2012 at 5:10 PM
WIth summer winding down, I’m getting back into my stout-only mode. Think I’ll get into some Old Rasputin this evening.
September 27th, 2012 at 5:10 PM
And BrawnyTom correct me if I’m wrong, but you always want cap space remaining to cover unexpected/expected bonuses so they don’t count against next years cap, right?
yeah, we’ve taken mctibble to the woodshed pretty good for this one. all of that fact-sy stuff is in the comments.
September 27th, 2012 at 5:11 PM
Well excuse me for getting caught up muttering to myself in other posts. Carry on.
September 27th, 2012 at 5:14 PM

Local joint has Spaten Octoberfest on. Thumbs up.
September 27th, 2012 at 5:17 PM
Left Hand milk stout another good one.
September 27th, 2012 at 5:18 PM
LH doesn’t do it for me. I’m into brown ales mostly, and either Avery or Ft. Collins has an excellent.
There’s a whole bunch of good Octoberfests, and I couldn’t name any.
You Dallas guys ever get to Flying Saucer there? They have the 80-100 beers on tap like they do here?
September 27th, 2012 at 5:19 PM
I’ve never heard of a cornerback/kick returner before. I agree, McKnight should be pissed.
Sarcasm right?
September 27th, 2012 at 5:20 PM
I just realized how many Rogue beers I haven’t had. Damn.

Went to the Fort Worth one. They might have had 50. I did not have enough time.

Better imperial stout: Rogue or Old Rasputin: Discuss
September 27th, 2012 at 5:22 PM
I think that applies to every comment on this post.
September 27th, 2012 at 5:23 PM
I think the only Rogue I’ve had is the Russian Imperial.
September 27th, 2012 at 5:24 PM
For quality beers on tap, I like to hit up Ginger Man or The Common Table.
September 27th, 2012 at 5:25 PM
Better imperial stout: Rogue or Old Rasputin: Discuss
Phillymantis might be able to comment on this but Triumph Brewery in Princeton does a kick ass imperial stout. Almost fell out of my chair.
September 27th, 2012 at 5:27 PM
Better imperial stout: Rogue or Old Rasputin: Discuss
Rasputin. Rogue’s Shakespeare Stout is delicious though.
September 27th, 2012 at 5:27 PM
I couldn’t remember either stout enough to judge, but I’m always willing to try.
Rogue hazelnut and oatmeal are great too, and can get them at Trader Joe’s.
There’s a bunch of breweries I’ve found that I don’t care what it is, even if it’s an IPA (which is low on my list of fav beers) I’ll drink it because I know it will be excellent, for what it is.
September 27th, 2012 at 5:31 PM
probably going with Rasputin on that one. Rogue makes some solid jams though; Dead Guy being a favorite.
September 27th, 2012 at 5:34 PM
Speaking of Rogue, I love when a maker does stuff like this and offers it on their website:
