Cam Newton’s Carolina Honeymoon is Over: Charlotte Observer Sees Him as More Hello Kitty Than a Panther
Cam Newton isn’t the superstar this season that he was early in his rookie year. Despite high expectations, the Panthers are 1-2 and Newton has thrown just two touchdown passes to go along with five interceptions and a fumble. Today the Charlotte Observer published this cartoon showing Newton doing his Superman celebration only to reveal the Hello Kitty logo.
Update: Here’s the color version. Not the color version of Cam Newton, mind you. Just the color version of the cartoon…

I can understand their frustration given the high quality of QB play that they had before he came along.
September 26th, 2012 at 9:53 AM
Needs to switch to te or tb. Would not want to tackle that dude

Reverse Cowboy Chili.
September 26th, 2012 at 9:57 AM
I’m sure they would be much better with Ryan DelTerrible or Jimmmy Clausen as their QB.

More kitty than panther….I thought they were just calling him a pussy.
September 26th, 2012 at 9:58 AM
Where have you gone, Brian St. Pierre?

Is Jake Delhomme still collecting a paycheck somewhere or is he going to be appearing on the next season of Swamp People?
September 26th, 2012 at 10:06 AM
Still a better quarterback than midget hands Smith.
September 26th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
Nah, spent last season with Houston I think though.
Carolina gave him a 42 million deal with 20 guaranteed less than a year before they cut him though, so he’s doing alright.
Marty Hurney, best GM in the league.

maybe from Bojangles.

Pretty ballsy/out of touch move there by the observer. Lest they forget who helped bring excitement back to the cities professional sports scene, and helps line their pockets with people clicking their websites sports section and reading the Monday paper…
Dude has played 2 reasonably tough defenses in those losses. I was quietly hoping for 2-2 at the 4 game mark, so color me surprised that they have already gone with this under-the-bus move. Now, most objective Panthers fans know that he is probably a headcase, and losing is tough on him. That being said, piling on probably doesn’t help.

You can run enough electricity through a corpse to make it twitch but it’s still a corpse.

Another Vince Young?

meow said Cam.

I’m sure Kerry Collins has something to say to CammyCam…

And pushing a contrarian view against the team’s best player will surely drive up those views.
The formula is pretty simple.

Cam has to do better with the sulking when things don’t go well. He has to be that same

$45.2m in guaranteed money to three replaceable running backs.
Marty Hurney doin’ work.

…….dude who was smiling through all of the controversy at Auburn. It seems like he’s placing too much pressure on himself. But damn, as a sports fan, I’d rather have a player who has to learn how to dial down his emotion reacting to a loss than someone who doesn’t give a damn.
September 26th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
Cam is no Steve Beuerlein, that’s for sure.

You seriously over-estimate the newspaper readership in CLT.

I liked the bit from the 2007 Giants America’s Game where Strahan is talking about how Eli always has that same dead-eyed look regardless of situation…he tells it in a funny way that kinda makes Eli seem retarded but stuff like that matters

a little progress on ref talks. 21 refs will go into a developmental program. no progress on pensions

I’m pretty sure we are all using the word fungible to describe the running back position. Not replaceable. I’ll send you an updated snark manual.

Living outside of Charlotte I always found the Cam Newton draft pick interesting. From a business/ticket sales perspective I understood it – Charlotte is something like the top city for young, professional minorities. But I never understood it from a ‘We want to win’ perspective or a ‘we’re building a team’ perspective — especially only a year after drafting Jimmy Clausen with what was essentially their first round pick.
Anyway, I’m not overly shocked the criticism is starting to come down — but in fairness to Cam it deserves to be placed on several sets of shoulders before his.

Big Panthers fan and excited about the possibilities that could be — very undecided about Cam’s attitude and behavior when we’re losing. Character is proven in adversity, not when everything is great. He has so much potential but behaves like he’s three years old. I can see being upset about certain plays or angry in certain situations, but really? His behavior is odd — he doesn’t appear to want to lead. Great leaders work constantly to adjust, listen (most important) and learn. Great leaders do not pout or behave so immaturely. He’s very, very talented. And I really love that he doesn’t like losing. I just see someone who gets caught up in sulking and pouting way, way too much. Poor attitude.

I think it’s really sad as a Panther fan down east in our great state that Cam’s own new hometown newspaper would run such a cartoon and the hater that thinks he’s so funny…..it’s not funny. It’s embarrassing. I am ashamed of the Charlotte Observer and all the folks that are so negative and who blame Cam for the losses. My God, he’s just a young boy trying to figure it all out. I think it’s hard for him to come out of his funk because he holds himself so responsible to and for the team. As a young kid, his excitement that he has scored just sometimes can’t be contained- Thursday night got the best of him…. he was proud and happy that he scored FOR HIS TEAM-his behavior did NOT mean he was bragging about being the best player or it’s all about him…. I agree he should have saved it for another time, but the haters have him pegged all wrong. I know this for sure. Maybe the coach or Richardson can talk to him and coach him emotionally and about his image. I think it’s appropriate for Rivera and Richardson to “advise” him on some things that ALL young people need to hear from time to time. Our losses should not rest solely on his shoulders…. wonder if Denver bashed Peyton after his loss and 3 pass interceptions. I am aware that people were yelling Delhomme’s name at the NY game. So sad and so disgusting that we can’t publicly show support for our team and players.

The cartoonist put this out in response to Cam scoring a touchdown and performing his Superman routine while down 31-7 to the Giants. The cartoonist has said he thinks celebrating a touchdown while getting your butt kicked is a bit absurd.
