Roundup: Packers Screwed by Refs, Bob Ryan Says Newspapers are Dead & Less Gangnam, More Russian Dash Cam!
Sofia Vergara … as far as high school nastiness goes, this homecoming story is one of the worst I’ve seen in awhile – but has a nice ending! … Evan Turner wore this hat … don’t be “that guy” on twitter, folks … yes, this is probably Green Bay’s hottest fan … Bradley Cooper may be dating Zoe Saldana … a depressing jobs crisis graph … watch a Milwaukee man – who had just tried to rob two people – die in the back of a police car … “Popular Sarasota dolphin found dead” … Tom Shales hated the Emmys ...

So what can we talk about today?
September 25th, 2012 at 8:13 AM
She’s built like a brick shithouse. She also looks like a mermaid, though I’m not complaining.

September 25th, 2012 at 8:15 AM
I’m here for the shit show.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:16 AM
I did not see THE play in last nites GB/SEA game live, but heard about it on ESPN radio on the way into work. Just caught the video on YT. That is prob the worst ruling so far this year. I understand the double-possession rule, where the ball goes to the OFF players, but clearly Jennings intercepts the ball there. I don’t see anything else that would dispute.
/sits backs in chair, awaits for clarification from others.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:17 AM
Fuck Goodell. That said this feels like a Bizaro NFL season so far. New England 1-2. tied for first. Saints 0-3. Seattle and Arizona 3-0. Yep…it’s a Seinfeld Bizaro start of the season.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:18 AM
Haven’t seen this much outrage about an end-of-game call since the Immaculate Reception.
Sofia Vergara? Sure. That dress will go down in infamy.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:19 AM
Karma. That’s what it is. Karma fucking the NFL and Goodell for him being a dick-tator and karma for the owners being assholes.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:19 AM
ref should be embarrassed he missed the blatant push-off by Tate. So obvious.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:20 AM
Reggie – Seattle is 2-1. Lost to Arizona (in another controversial finish, though far less so)
September 25th, 2012 at 8:20 AM
Knew nothing of this Gangam Style thing, until about a week ago when my son was showing me video and dancing to it. I thought Oregon University was only known for producing this, this and this.
God Bless those Duck Cheerleaders
September 25th, 2012 at 8:20 AM
I haven’t watched much NFL so far, but for those who have: are the refs really that bad or is it that we know they’re replacements so we’re giving them a harder look?
/last night’s call was atrocious
September 25th, 2012 at 8:21 AM
I’m here for the Jason Lisk retraction on his agreement with the simultaneous possession call.
initially, on NFLN highlight show, the recap stated that Golden Tate “wrestled the ball away” for simultaneous possession. then, after their bosses let them, they all decided the call was wrong.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:21 AM
I’m a huge Russell Wilson fan, and I defended the scabs here yesterday, but that performance last night (from start to finish) was terble.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:21 AM
My mistake…
September 25th, 2012 at 8:22 AM
I doubt anyone around here is old enough to remember the famous Chester Marcol play?
September 25th, 2012 at 8:24 AM
You are old, HTown
September 25th, 2012 at 8:24 AM
To top it off that shitshow of a play cost me money as I had GB -3.5.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:24 AM
That was weird
September 25th, 2012 at 8:25 AM
~opens door~ Green Bay still lost? Yes? Good.
~closes door~
September 25th, 2012 at 8:25 AM
The play should have ended on the obvious offensive pass interference.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:27 AM
He’s likely laughing all the way to the bank.
I’m normally not conspiracy theory guy, but this is absolutely the perfect opportunity to try and fix games if you had enough risk tolerance and capital (e.g. the mob). The NFL reference checks are supposedly notoriously thorough for the normal officiating crew (routine background checks, lie detector tests, etc.), but with these guys? Who the fuck knows. If ever there was a weak link to exploit, if ever there was a time to question the integrity of the game, this would seem to be the perfect opportunity. Before you dismiss it, think about the billions ($10 billion on the Super Bowl alone) that NFL betting sees, these early games with the initial chaos of a refereeing “shit show” provides perfect cover. Motive ($) and opportunity (shit show). Just saying…
September 25th, 2012 at 8:28 AM
Infamy=disgrace. I see nothing disgraceful about that dress.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:28 AM
It will be right after Call Me Maybe videos stop being made
September 25th, 2012 at 8:28 AM
On regular missed calls/bad calls that are judgement calls, we are probably giving them too much of a hard time. However on game management, line of scrimmage, control of the players, time between plays, and hesitancy to make calls, they are obviously horrific.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:30 AM
Good call. I agree with you on all of this.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:31 AM
Just read the story about “high school nastiness.” Man, kids can be awful human beings. Not as awful as the refs in last night’s game, but awful nonetheless.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:34 AM
Who is this old gasbag Tom Shales and why do you keep posting his out of touch critiques here?
September 25th, 2012 at 8:34 AM
Screw job. Bud Selig is laughing at Goodell’s incompetence.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:34 AM
Had it up to here with scab ref bashing, the scab refs are the physical embodiment of perfect, they pull just and accurate calls from the land of the forms itself, and through the our flawed lens we misjudge their justice but thankfully the scab refs are perfect and are not swayed or tarnished with our ignorance. I love the scab refs.

It’s people like him that result in Jon Cryer getting an Emmy.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:37 AM
It is Week 4 and the Vikings are tied for first. All I care about.

I might miss a call or two in the Lingerie Football League.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:41 AM
Working from Starbucks this morning. You know it’s a bad call when the hipsters here are talking about it. Probably the only clip of football they’ve seen this year.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:42 AM
This is a total lie, just wanted to make sure it was pointed out.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:42 AM
Just got done reading this. Kids suck. I have 2 kids myself and I worry about shit like this sometimes, not only with them, but how they treat others. Dad was right, don’t get married and don’t have kids.

I like that the biggest issue Selig has dealt with over the last 10 years, was a tie at the all-star game.
/steroids issue for mlb is overblown

September 25th, 2012 at 8:44 AM
So this weekend New Orleans vs Green Bay, the “NFL Screwed Us” game.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:44 AM
wtf – no better way to start a day than watching someone die…
September 25th, 2012 at 8:46 AM
How many sacks did the Packers give up? They only scored 12 points….yeah they got screwed….but this is a bit like Bills fans complaining about the Music City Miracle when they failed to move the ball nearly the entire game.
just saying that lost in all this their crap play during the game
September 25th, 2012 at 8:46 AM
Selig is definitely the most competent of the four commisioners in North American sports. Going on 20 years of labor peace, record revenues, record player contracts and great young stars.
Selig >>>>>> Stern > Goodell >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Bettman
September 25th, 2012 at 8:46 AM
and it’s too bad all of this is beginning to add up and seriously impact games
September 25th, 2012 at 8:47 AM
My understanding is that hipsters would never patronize a Starbucks.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:47 AM
Here’s a thought- the regular refs probably never would’ve had to make the call at the end because all the flags and penalties from earlier in the game would have negated needing a hail mary.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:48 AM
Chipper Jones: Baseball’s play-in game is “stupid.”
Because it’s true.
UT frat boys are the loseriest bros ever
C’mon Jason, a little better choice of words. Classifying them all as the loseriest people because one frat (easily the worst and stupidest) does something stupid isn’t fair.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:48 AM
so apparently the Packers last night are the first team in the history of football to get screwed by the refs. got it.
Go Vikings.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:48 AM
You could say the same thing about the Bucs/Cowboys game.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:49 AM
Jose- I wish. I work out of here one day a week but it is the only coffee shop around. Thought about bringing black framed glasses and selling them at a discount.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:50 AM
exactly. Like last nights game probably should have been 21-17 due to all the drives extended by bad calls from the officials.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:51 AM
Exactly. If it’s any consolation, which it isn’t, that isn’t even a real frat and they are the butt of all jokes in the Greek community.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:53 AM
I don’t know dude, alcohol enemas? I’m indicting all frats within a 20 mile radius for that.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:54 AM
Always liked Chipper. This is just another reason to like him.
I hate the Packers and are happy they lost, but…they got hosed. It doesn’t matter what happened prior to that, it doesn’t matter what would have happened had some other calls been made or not made. It doesn’t matter that other teams also got screwed by these and other refs. That was clearly an interception. The incompetence is astounding.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:54 AM
As a teacher, it’s amazing to see how bad kids can be at the high school level. Most times they are picking on someone who is quiet, doesn’t bother anyone, and can’t defend themselves. It’s equally amazing to find that there are good kids who will protect or defend them.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:54 AM
I was kind of an asshole in high school, but this is taking it to the next level. and that isn’t really a compliment.
September 25th, 2012 at 8:55 AM
I have yet to see one reasonable reaction on facebook, yeah it’s quite bad. Packers got jobbed, but probably should have never been in that position in the first place. Wish they would have tried harder to get that first down to ice it. Or convert the two point conversion (though Rodgers said he had to use a K-ball, which kind of sucks).
September 25th, 2012 at 8:57 AM
That can’t be overstated. They looked terrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible, Bill Walton style. Said this on Twitter but, they have a Martz-era Rams vibe about them.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:00 AM
Best looking Packers fan I’ve seen in person was this gal I used to work with. Ginormous rack with Clay Matthews’ face. That fanbase is “not a handsome group” as Gorilla Monsoon would say.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:01 AM
Dad was right, don’t get married and don’t have kids.
He’s always told me to not jog, not run, but sprint from this idea.
I don’t know dude, alcohol enemas? I’m indicting all frats within a 20 mile radius for that
The differences in frats at UT are large. These dudes are idiots, always have been.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:01 AM
After the whole Megatron ‘process’ thing I had no idea if that was an interception or not last night. But it was awesome in the moment. Upon replay it looked pretty obvious that Golden Tate didn’t have possesion. It was still a cool sight to see. The post game Russell Wilson interview was awesomely awkward.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:04 AM
I dont really get this defense, Eagles were shit against the Browns, does that mean a ref should have made a horrible call so that they ended up losing and it would’ve been justified?
September 25th, 2012 at 9:05 AM
I’m not sure that was being used as a defense. He was calling attention to it. For a supposed Super Bowl contender they looked lousy.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:05 AM
Selig is definitely the most competent of the four commisioners in North American sports. Going on 20 years of labor peace, record revenues, record player contracts and great young stars.

Your Orioles need to kick it into high gear for these final games. Really rooting for them win the division.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:08 AM
Seems to be a theme this year though. No one’s really standing out. It’s the Cardinals and Texans this week, but like the 49ers of last week, I’m sure they’ll both shit the bed next week.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:09 AM
Smartest thing you will read at this place all day/week/month. Also, the PGA has done a pretty damn good job of growing from the crotchety old mans game 20 years ago to the product it is today. Granted, it would have taken only a warm body to capitalize on TW’s success, but there is no denying the PGA adjusting to the times and becoming the success it is today.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:09 AM
I dont really get this defense
No, not defending a blown call but the Packers are acting like they actually deserved to win that game and the ONLY thing that cost them is the refs. The ref’s didn’t prevent them from giving up sack like Halloween candy and they didn’t cause them to not move the ball…or to go three and out with a chance to win the game.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:11 AM
He once wrote a book on Saturday Night Live and is tight with Lorne Michael. He defended the show in the 2000s and hates the SNL of Adam Sandler, Chris Farley and David Spade. He’s an asshole.

Not getting the sweep in the DH yesterday was killer. With Yanks having 2 more against the Twins and a 1.5 game lead with 8 to go, not looking good.
/like O’s chances in a 1 game playoff at home vs. A’s
September 25th, 2012 at 9:17 AM
Who would be the projected starters in that one?
September 25th, 2012 at 9:18 AM
Finally got to see TW play in person at the Tour Championship on Saturday. He is taller than I realized in person. No he didnt win but it was just great to see him live. Watched Rory, Phil and others too. It was all free because the Tour Championship lets active duty or retired Military and their families in for free and had their own tent and bleachers on the 16th hole. Great move…and had a great time.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:20 AM
Gangnam Style? Is this fad over yet?
I blame CRM.
More Russian dash-cam videos, less Gangnam, please, internet.
Seat belts save lives, but make for less impressive videos of people being ejected from their rigs in Russia. And I’m still befuddled by so many Russian dash cam you tube videos. There is something to this and I’m going to enjoy it.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:22 AM
Who would be the projected starters in that one?
I really don’t think it matters. (Personally, I’d go with Tillman or Gonzalez.) I think you’d see Buck use 8-10 pitchers with none going more than 2 IP. Play match ups for all 9 (or more) innings
/I understand that’s not how the game is supposed to be played but 1 game playoff series make no sense.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:22 AM
Can you have possession before completing the catch?
If the answer to that question is no, then both guys could possibly have simultaneous possession when they hit the ground, right?
Meaning it shouldn’t matter if he touches the ball first with both hands before Green Bay dude’s one hand.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:23 AM
Last series of the year- Yankees/Red Sox. That could set up to be a great story with Boston doing to NY what Baltimore did to Boston last year. It’d be their playoffs.

Last series of the year- Yankees/Red Sox. That could set up to be a great story with Boston doing to NY what Baltimore did to Boston last year. It’d be their playoffs.
Last series for O’s terrifies me. (3 in TB.) Even if they are eliminated, Maddon will have those guys playing hard and they can pitch.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:26 AM
Yes, that was Seattle, who was a good team. The refs also didn’t make the Packers defense completely shut down the Seattle offense until gifted a touchdown.
Football is a game of offense and defense. Yes, the Packers offense was bad, but a MNF in Seattle against a very good defense…it wasn’t like they were turning it over left and right. Their defense played very well. Sometime that happens and you can still deserve to win.
Did Seattle somehow magically play better and deserve to win? As bad as the Packers looked, when it was all said and done they played a more complete game than Seattle.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:27 AM
As much as I hate the Yankees, if I understand the CBA correctly I believe it will hurt the Red Sox if they finish outside of the bottom 9 records in baseball. (if they sign a free agent) I may actually have to root for the Yanks to win.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:28 AM
As someone who had to live with a cheesehead wearing “superbowl champion only parking” sign hanging roommate for a year, I love the refs.

Remember the article @theBigLead posted about Philly being racist? Just check out the post and the comments for the Evan Turner hat(e) pic. Damn, who cares who the dude takes pics with and I especially appreciate the “black mongoloid” comment. Nice. Philly is just depressing.

Packers fans know that, as owners, they’re the ones that locked out the refs, right?
September 25th, 2012 at 9:38 AM
They got it cleaned up pretty well in the second half, Seattle’s good at the defense…I’m guessing the Packer offense gets right now that they’re done with the 49er-Bear-Seahawk stretch, just hope Houston doesn’t kill Rodgers in a few weeks
September 25th, 2012 at 9:40 AM
This isn’t accurate, the stockholders don’t meet and vote on policy matters…it’s more symbolic than anything (I think the only thing they could ever be brought in on would be selling the team)

Bob Ryan:
“The Twitter world has perverted any concept of perspective. When everything is judged on pitch-by-pitch, play-by-play, moment-by-moment, that eliminates the sense of perspective and it’s extremely dangerous. It’s wrong.”
September 25th, 2012 at 9:46 AM
Once again, the teaser pic and the Roundup pic should be flip-flopped.
Rule of thumb: If a bikini is involved, it goes on the Roundup.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:46 AM
Is that a northern city or southern? I get confused here.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:47 AM
….. Bob Ryan is right though.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
Don’t most sensible people understand this? Twitter has been around long enough that most reasonable people are able to discern that for themselves. Or maybe I’m being naive.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:51 AM
if by infamy you mean go down to the floor in less than 10 seconds, then yes
September 25th, 2012 at 9:52 AM
Sorry, Bob. I think your work is great, but you’re dead wrong here.
People have and will always make snap judgments about a sporting event (or any activity) just after it’s happened. Twitter simply provides a way to share those thoughts with a different group of people other than those you happen to be with at the bar or watching the game with.
Blaming twitter for lack of perspective is like blaming Facebook for a spouse cheating on you.

This will spark the real Revolution.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:56 AM
Twitter easily lends itself to hive mind hysteria much more than anything before it. Remember the Boy in the Balloon?
September 25th, 2012 at 9:57 AM
big shout out to the replacement refs for giving the Lions company in the cellar.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:58 AM
you’re putting way to much faith in humanity.
September 25th, 2012 at 10:01 AM
Well I did narrow it down to “sensible” and “reasonable” people. So that’s about… 2% of humanity. Might be pushing it I guess.
September 25th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
Unfortunately, there are fewer and fewer reasonable people these days.
September 25th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
Of course. But what’s your point? All that considered, they played better than the Seahawks over the course of the game. Rodgers wasn’t sacked in the second half.
September 25th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
i think he was sacked once.
September 25th, 2012 at 10:06 AM
Winning the challenge which got them the 1st and goal took that away I believe
They dominated that second half, just should have converted one of those FG drives into a TD or not have had that INT taken away and it wouldn’t have come down to the final play
September 25th, 2012 at 10:10 AM
Butters,
I am surprised you are here and not out leaving a trail of blood
September 25th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
That for a Super Bowl contender, the Packers looked lousy. They corrected a lot in the 2nd half so good job by McCarthy and co. But I don’t think I’m ready to give the Seahawks D THAT much credit yet.
