NFL Says Seattle 14, Green Bay 12 is “Final”
Oh. Thanks, Roger. The NFL just released this:
In Monday’s game between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks, Seattle faced a 4th-and-10 from the Green Bay 24 with eight seconds remaining in the game.
Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson threw a pass into the end zone. Several players, including Seattle wide receiver Golden Tate and Green Bay safety M.D. Jennings, jumped into the air in an attempt to catch the ball.
While the ball is in the air, Tate can be seen shoving Green Bay cornerback Sam Shields to the ground. This should have been a penalty for offensive pass interference, which would have ended the game. It was not called and is not reviewable in instant replay.
When the players hit the ground in the end zone, the officials determined that both Tate and Jennings had possession of the ball. Under the rule for simultaneous catch, the ball belongs to Tate, the offensive player. The result of the play was a touchdown.
Replay Official Howard Slavin stopped the game for an instant replay review. The aspects of the play that were reviewable included if the ball hit the ground and who had possession of the ball. In the end zone, a ruling of a simultaneous catch is reviewable. That is not the case in the field of play, only in the end zone.
Referee Wayne Elliott determined that no indisputable visual evidence existed to overturn the call on the field, and as a result, the on-field ruling of touchdown stood. The NFL Officiating Department reviewed the video today and supports the decision not to overturn the on-field ruling following the instant replay review.
The result of the game is final.
Applicable rules to the play are as follows:
A player (or players) jumping in the air has not legally gained possession of the ball until he satisfies the elements of a catch listed here.
Rule 8, Section 1, Article 3 of the NFL Rule Book defines a catch:
A forward pass is complete (by the offense) or intercepted (by the defense) if a player, who is inbounds:
(a) secures control of the ball in his hands or arms prior to the ball touching the ground; and
(b) touches the ground inbounds with both feet or with any part of his body other than his hands; and
(c) maintains control of the ball long enough, after (a) and (b) have been fulfilled, to enable him to perform any act common to the game (i.e., maintaining control long enough to pitch it, pass it, advance with it, or avoid or ward off an opponent, etc.).When a player (or players) is going to the ground in the attempt to catch a pass, Rule 8, Section 1, Article 3, Item 1 states:
Player Going to the Ground. If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact by an opponent), he must maintain control of the ball throughout the process of contacting the ground, whether in the field of play or the end zone. If he loses control of the ball, and the ball touches the ground before he regains control, the pass is incomplete. If he regains control prior to the ball touching the ground, the pass is complete.
Rule 8, Section 1, Article 3, Item 5 states:
Simultaneous Catch. If a pass is caught simultaneously by two eligible opponents, and both players retain it, the ball belongs to the passers. It is not a simultaneous catch if a player gains control first and an opponent subsequently gains joint control. If the ball is muffed after simultaneous touching by two such players, all the players of the passing team become eligible to catch the loose ball.

So much bullshit. Hardly surprising though.

Did he complete the process Roger? You fuck face hillbilly.

So you don’t agree with Lisk, then?

It doesn’t matter what you THINK you obviously saw. Here’s what ACTUALLY happened, according to us.

Weak. Where’s WWF President Jack Tunney? His ruling is the only one I respect.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:30 PM
Well what do you expect them to do? They cannot open that Pandora’s Box, under any circumstances.
Here’s the real question: If the players and coaches feel this strongly about getting the real refs back, and Goodell still refuses to budge, will the players and coaches put their money where their mouth is and refuse to play?
September 25th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
will the players and coaches put their money where their mouth is and refuse to play?
pretty sure they can’t. they have an incompetent union, and I believe their CBA forbids them from going on a sympathy strike.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
Interestingly enough, Phil Luckett (also of the Thanksgiving coin flip magic) was the replay offical last night so I’d say he’s broken even with Seattle
September 25th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
Woah woah woah. So this goes against what people have been saying. They could have reversed this. And the NFL agrees with the decision that there wasn’t indisputable evidencE? Hooooly shit.

yeah, I didn’t know there was an “end zone exception” for possession calls. that kind of makes it worse, doesn’t it?
September 25th, 2012 at 12:35 PM
Seriously?? That is amazing. Phil Luckett has truly returned to glory.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:35 PM
You are right, Jayhawk. Pandora can’t go back into the box – he only comes out.
Speaking of refs, what does TBL think of Ed Hochuli’s pecs?
September 25th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
To the people that are not agreeing with the call:
Are you saying that Tate had no possession of the ball? Because the way I read the rule, even if it looks like Jennings had MORE control of it, Tate shared some of that possession, and by rule it goes to the offense.
It is not the spirit of the rule, but it seems to be to the letter.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
Dont they do that by mentioning offensive pass intereference should have been called? I’m kind of shocked they offered that opinion.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:37 PM

did this happen before or after the OT game where Mornhinweg deferred the OT kickoff because it was windy?
September 25th, 2012 at 12:38 PM
The Packers sure are a bunch of whiners! Entitled town.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
Sounds like Cold War propaganda to me. Comrade Goodell has made his statement.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
Tate shared some of that possession,
putting your hands on the ball does not equal shared possession.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
Way worse. It was close but clear, and the refs didn’t have the balls to make the tough call on the road. I wonder how many real refs would have, though. All? Most? Some?

September 25th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
I was too.
They all but admitted the officials missed a pretty crucial call.
You can argue all day about shared possession and what it means.
Bottom line, is the play should have never counted and it was a another miss by the replacement officials.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
you’d think the NFL would try to have less complex rules to avoid having to explain such things. creating exceptions to rules for certain situations that create complex situations for simple outcomes is insane.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
kinda hard to not mention that, as obvious as it was.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
Now how about overturning that Big Ben to Antonio Brown TD catch that he fumbled and recovered in the endzone?
/Only for FF reasons
//No one but me cares
September 25th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
See they have guys there to help the refs out, and straighten out any wrong interpretation of the rules (eg reviewable possession or not), so shouldn’t the blame lie with them? I’m not 100% this call is right every time with real refs.
As for Packers fans saying they are done with football until it’s reversed or for the year whatever…. SHUT THE FUCK UP. It sucked, but it’s one game. GB still controls their fate for the playoffs.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:43 PM
I was wondering which media site would blame this on Ayn Rand first, turns out it was Slate. Good times.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:43 PM
As for Packers fans saying they are done with football until it’s reversed or for the year whatever…. SHUT THE FUCK UP.
Yeah… I hope this isn’t directed at me. There are some neanderthals out there though, no doubt. Today is one of those days where I’m glad I’m not on Facebook.

Poor Packer fans. Nothing ever goes their way.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:44 PM
It’s a bad call, but not an easy one to make, and it’s NEVER easy to feel there’s enough evidence to overturn a call. I think the supervisors are most at blame, and I think they left the ref out to hang.
Also if you like conspiracies, they are on the side of the real refs, with whom they usually work, and really enjoy the controversy.

September 25th, 2012 at 12:46 PM
The part where Scott Walker and Paul Ryan are now pro union is making me giggle
September 25th, 2012 at 12:46 PM
He did more than just place his hands on the ball. Granted, Jennings did even more, but I don’t think the refs can come out and say that Jennings controlled 80% therefore it is an INT.
/Had Packers in Survivor
September 25th, 2012 at 12:47 PM
and it’s NEVER easy to feel there’s enough evidence to overturn a call.
They had no problem overturning the spot on Aaron Rodgers first down near the goal line… did they? Those are notoriously hard to overturn. Then they used the unofficial yellow “first down line” to give the Packers a first down instead of measuring. But there wasn’t enough evidence to overturn this call?
September 25th, 2012 at 12:48 PM
Good, quality decision. The NFL did the right thing.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:48 PM
The initial contact does it for me. Jennings grabs it, Tate touches it. Doesn’t get any sort of grip until going to the ground.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:48 PM
not only that, but they support people making $32k for their job. I don’t think they understand the situation.

To the people that are not agreeing with the call:
Are you saying that Tate had no possession of the ball?
yes, that’s exactly what i’m saying. Golden Tate never had possession of the ball. Even on the ground. He had two hands on a ball that somebody else was possessing. But he was never possessing it.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
It was an interception.

September 25th, 2012 at 12:54 PM
The picture that was just posted doesn’t show Tate’s left arm…wasn’t it on the ball the whole time?
having one hand on the ball is not possess it, especially when you consider the fact that the other guy caught it and brought it to his chest. At one point Jennings is laying on top of Tate’s chest, with the ball on top of his chest, so his whole body is wrapped around the ball, and Tate is under him, with some arms stuck in there.

September 25th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
When does possession begin? Jenning has it first, but Tate has his hands on the ball before they reach the ground. I can see why it would be tough to overturn.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
The guy who signaled TD was also the one who called the PI on Shields when the receiver pushed off…when you’re paying your officials scab rates I bet it’s a lot easier to buy them off
/Foil hat’d
September 25th, 2012 at 1:01 PM
Putting a hand on the ball isn’t possession…simultaneous rulings occur when both players are clearly clutching it, it wasn’t a hard call to make with replay available
September 25th, 2012 at 1:01 PM
That was a far more egregious call, IMO. Shields would have face-guarded and committed PI, but he was grabbed and turned by the WR and forced to see the ball.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:01 PM
So on the 2nd gif, Tate gets no credit for his left hand and forearm across the ball combined with the right hand on top of the ball (1st gif)? 0% possession?
September 25th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
Cannot be simultaneous if Jennings caught it first and maintained possession.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:04 PM
So on the 2nd gif, Tate gets no credit for his left hand and forearm across the ball combined with the right hand on top of the ball (1st gif)? 0% possession?
so you want me to focus on the one that most obscures the ball and Tate, and then make assumptions based on that, while ignoring the other ones, where he clearly takes on hand away from a ball he’s attempting to possess and puts it back on?
He takes that right hand off, very clearly and very early on. All the while, the other guy is possessing it, again, very clearly.
You can’t regain simultaneous possession.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:04 PM
What I’m saying is that if Jennings has the ball in the air clearly, and Tate wrestled it away in the process of going to the ground (not what happened), that can’t be an INT, right, because possession wasn’t established fully until they landed?
So if that is the case, does it matter who has possession first (clearly Jennings) who had hands on the ball when they hit the ground (more Jennings, but it’s closer because Jennings doesn’t quite have the ball to his chest yet) or who ended up with more possession at the end of the play (Jennings).
September 25th, 2012 at 1:05 PM
It really is this simple guys
September 25th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
This makes sense.
So I now have to ask if two hands are needed for possession.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
It really is this simple guys
When Marshawn Lynch’s “victroy” party has members saying things like “we didn’t win that game” I think it’s pretty safe to say that the wrong call was made.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:07 PM
That seems to be all that matters. And it seems like Jennings has it first. Still a ballsy call to overturn, and the league officials really needed to step in.
Once they didn’t overrule it, no way the league can step in and fix it, which is what they did here. Explain the rule, and stand behind the decision, even if wrong.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:07 PM
I ask, because I am not sure Tate’s hand is ever off the ball while Jennings controls it.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:08 PM
So I now have to ask if two hands are needed for possession.
what’s primarily needed for possession is to possess the ball, which he doesn’t. the other guy clearly does with two hands, starting immediately. So yeah, if you want to tie on possession, your second hand better go in there before you hit the ground.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
I would have enjoyed it more if Jennings clearly had the ball first, and right when they were hitting the ground, Tate took the ball away and had it in the end. Joint possession couldn’t occur, so it would all come down to if Jennings completed the play before losing the ball, and it would be just as big a fiasco.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:10 PM
So hey, if this is a thread for outrage, can I post this? It’s a lot closer than I thought it was at this angle…
/kicks rock
September 25th, 2012 at 1:11 PM
Control versus possession matters too probably. Even if they had possession at the same time (eg both had it hitting the ground), can you reasonably assert that Jennings had ‘control’ in the air? Probably.

don’t worry. We all already know that moron rookie missed that kick. We’re just happy about it, so we don’t complain.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
That angle is absolutely useless though because you can’t tell when it goes past the post, granted it sure as fuck looks close but you just can’t tell from the back.
Again, I suggest everyone find highlights of last year’s Toledo/Cuse game where the refs got a kick call wrong on the field AND on review and it decided the game. Fucking hilarious.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
From the NFL’s own rules. Defender had it, brought it to his chest and hit the ground. He controlled possession the entire time, despite Tate having a hand in there and ripping the ball away on the ground (with the other hand).
September 25th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
Looks like a make from that angle. If any part of the ball shadows any part of the post, it’s good, correct? What are the rules on doinks in space?

Oregon was awarded the ball for no apparent reason after a discussion about whether it was touched early. Completed a pass, kick FG, and win.

Not positive, but I don’t think this is correct.
yeah, that’s the rule.
NFL Rulebook:
(c) The entire ball must pass through the vertical plane of the goal, which is the area above the crossbar and between the uprights or, if above the uprights, between their outside edges. If the ball passes through the goal, and returns through the goal without striking the ground or some object or person beyond the goal, the attempt is unsuccessful.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
I believe Oklahoma was especially pissed because the Pac 10 (at the time) refs were working that game, when traditionally the visiting teams conference referees work non conference games.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
There’s really no disputing it was an unforgivable call that cost Green Bay the game. Terrible. The tables have turned, and if I were the real refs, I wouldn’t be budging on our offer either. They have most of the leverage now.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
They need that tennis out of bounds technology.. or have lasers that shoot out the edges of the goal posts
September 25th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
Trying to think of how this could happen without using The Force…not sure wind can even blow that hard straight through the uprights in an NFL stadium

The more I see this video and read the rule, if I’m a GB fan, I’m pissed. I know, I know, GB has 3 more games and they will be favored in almost of all them. But if this game costs them home field adv. sometime down the road in the playoffs, I will be disappointed.
Clearly, Jennings made the catch/INT. At know no time was there a ruling on the field. Two refs gave different rulings, so no ruling was made. Should have had a conference, went to the booth and made the call. I’m not so much as mad at the “replacement” refs as I am that a competent individual couldn’t make a reasonable call. Still think the call that the “regular” refs made in the Nov. 16, 2008 PIT/SD call was focked up as well.
Those refs all go together at the end of the game and made the incorrect call as well. Their Buffalo Wild Wing buzzers must have been going off.

I’m with Butters… just about to comment the same thing. Just in case they play in a hurricane?
September 25th, 2012 at 1:24 PM
Living through Jerry Rice’s fumble in the playoff game I’ve become steeled to any future game-deciding officiating errors
September 25th, 2012 at 1:24 PM
all they need is one to the side and one to the front on each post. 4 cameras. that run for probably a total of 2 minutes during the game.
of, just place a tiny sensor in the ball and top of the goal post.
hell, ESPN can create a strikezone with less technology than what would be involved to monitor FGs

Haha.. I remember this too… YEESH.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
Some insane spin where it hits the back of the crossbar and then flips up and out?
September 25th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
Just like with the video I posted, I paused it at both 8 and 9 seconds and can’t tell which shot is the one where the ball passed over head. Really as close as it gets.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
Trying to think of how this could happen without using The Force…not sure wind can even blow that hard straight through the uprights in an NFL stadium
doink, doink, doink, out. Or, doink, doink out. That way nobody has to review whether the whole ball crossed the plane.
A field goal is not the end zone. That’s what that means.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
Or maybe it’s some provision to account for dome door winds, remember that ridiculous shit in Detroit or Minny?
September 25th, 2012 at 1:26 PM

Some kicker will come up with a boomerang kick down the road, just you wait.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
If the fans in the end zone choreograph a perfect ’1-2-3-BLOW!’
September 25th, 2012 at 1:27 PM
How’s that bag he gave you? Holding up nicely?
September 25th, 2012 at 1:28 PM
There’s really no disputing it was an unforgivable call that cost Green Bay the game. Terrible. The tables have turned, and if I were the real refs, I wouldn’t be budging on our offer either. They have most of the leverage now.
It seems like they do, but it seemed like that last week, too. I wonder if they’ll consent to having a crop of training officials in exchange for the $$$. Because if they do, they’ll all get phased out in 5 years anyway.
My favorite part of this nonsense is that one of the real refs sticking points is that they don’t want extra real substitute officials who can be used when a real official makes a bad grade.

First ridiculous newspaper story involving business affected by the outcome of a football game.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
You should be able to with frame by frame. How many yards from kicker to the net? divide by FG yards, pause on that frame. The horizontal velocity is pretty much consistent, I’d imagine.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
Legends don’t fumble. Jerry was down by legacy.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
Most sane ones are over it. Just rather unfortunate they end up having to play an equally pissed off, tho for different reasons, 0-3 Saints team the very next week. In the minority, but braying to the karma gods that Seattle and GB play again in the playoffs. Both defenses last night were very good. I thought it was an entertaining watch even though points weren’t being scored.

Holy cow… Barnwell just wrote that this is the straw that broke the camel’s back, the NFL is on its way to being irrelevant.
Clearly he didn’t read about MLB’s high mortality rates.
What a fucking idiot.

Agree. Packers Defense seems to improved at least a little bit since last year. Unfortunately, the offense has regressed.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
this is getting to be as complicated as the NFL’s rules about possession int he end zone.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
Swapping out Jarrett Bush for Sam Shields seems to have made a world a difference in the secondary, really only had the one breakdown on the first TD…also that MacMillan has already made more plays than Charlie Peprah did last season
September 25th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
You can’t just act irresponsibly anymore. Your decisions affect more than yourself.

Jesus-fat-asses-eating-curds, I am so tired of Wisconsin. Can we make a trade with Canada? We can even throw in North Dakota, no one’s using that place, are they?
September 25th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
I keep, use out of context for fun times.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
not on the road to irrelevancy, but it’s not a good sign when the NBA can say, “see, our refs aren’t even that bad… and one of them took bribes to influence games”
September 25th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
Why not just put a top bar on the uprights and say you have to make it in the hole…field goals are too easy these days anyhow, let’s add some fun to it
September 25th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
“We want the ball and we’re going to let the refs screw up and score!”

We need more of these types of comments around here. Really adds a lot of value to the the discussion.

Don Beebe Game makeup call.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
Gruden couldn’t get over the fact that the Pack had four rookies on defense. I didn’t think it was that big of a deal, but that was nice to see. Hayward looked pretty good too.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
How’s about we just give Seattle the Bucks, deal?
September 25th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
Holy cow… Barnwell just wrote that this is the straw that broke the camel’s back, the NFL is on its way to being irrelevant.
if you go to their lineup on grantland in order, his post comes immediately after one called:
The Breaking Point
Was Sunday night’s Patriots-Ravens game the lowest moment of the NFL ref lockout? (UPDATE: OK! Maybe not!)
So this is a double back broken camel now.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Sports on Earth >>>>>>>>>>>>> Grantland, and it’s not even close
September 25th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
does Simmons even write for Grantland anymore? All the times i’ve checked it out i haven’t seen anything by him, which is odd that he’s so absent.

he’s been posting a lot of his “readers” emails to him instead. tough gig.

which one was the pussy that allowed tate to shove him at the end?
September 25th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
In terms of “Awful site names” it’s only got a close lead, but a lead nonetheless.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:49 PM

Ugh, that would be shitty. Wish we could just get an expansion team or the Bobcats (w/o Jordan), maybe the Grizzlies because they’re from up here. I also dislike the idea of taking the Oilers, that’s just shitty. Yotes would be just fine.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:49 PM

shields is the answer. not sure i understand/disagree with the phrasing of your question though.

i can honestly say i have never read one word of his, but seems to me he earned his position to have such a ‘tough’ gig

WI doesn’t touch Canada. Gotta throw in MN to make it work.
September 25th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
I think we’re all kidding ourselves and just trolling to troll if you think the regular refs would’ve gotten that one called any better….Only difference I see is they may have called that Tate push off.
September 25th, 2012 at 4:35 PM
With the ability to review the play, they would have gotten it right.
September 25th, 2012 at 4:58 PM
Most of the people upset about this are gamblers. There is no such thing as simultaneous possession where both players gain control of the ball at the exact same time. I’ve seen this too many times where the offensive playet was given the catch. I see no problem with this decision. You all are making a stink because These guys are scabs. Just like the Packers would have neverleft the field if the regulars had made this call.
Goodell needs to stop playing games. If these are the officials you choose to put out there then stand by them. Fine players coaches Organizations who berate them put their hands on them disparrage them on twitter or wall of the field on th. Fine them heavily. They’ll play ball and let you handle your business.
September 25th, 2012 at 5:46 PM
As idiotic as the last post was, I’ll play along with it. The NFL’s popularity was built in a very significant way by gambling. Fantasy Football has become a big part of the popularity Football sustains today. Scab refs making calls that mess with gambling lines and fantasy points is messing with business. The more these refs mess with the games, the less effective Roger is at handling his business.
September 25th, 2012 at 6:58 PM
So the NFL has to pay ridiculous amounts of money to referees because you and your degenerate gambler friends put money on games? A practice they make zero moneys on. Show me the study done to show that you are responsible for the NFL’s growth.
September 25th, 2012 at 7:00 PM
Your business is not the NFL‘s business dude. Go cry to your bookie.
September 25th, 2012 at 7:04 PM
I make popcorn pull up chair. Darrell?
September 25th, 2012 at 9:05 PM
If you believe that the outrage over that call is limited to gamblers, degenerate or otherwise, that’s an indictment on your lack of awareness. Because of your lack of awareness, I completely understand why you would have to create in your mind this characterization of me as a gambler. Better to fight an imaginary figure than to man up and support your own argument. Good luck on Election Day, Mr. Romney.
