Seattle Seahawks Win! Joint Possession Catch in End Zone
Seattle won a bizarre, at times infuriating game. Russell Wilson had one last chance at the end of the game, trailing by 5. He heaved it to the corner. Golden Tate got away with OPI, and then got his hands in to get joint possession. It should have been called a touchdown as long as the receiver has his hands on the ball, which he did until touchdown was signaled. Correct call on a night of plenty of bad ones.
Here is the photo of the exact moment that the ball arrives. Looks like simultaneous catch to me. Tate’s hands and Jennings’ hands are both on the ball.

Lisk, get on your phone, call up Gruden and tell him to shut up. It absolutely was either (a) a simultaneous catch or (b) too close to not be a judgement call.

September 24th, 2012 at 11:57 PM
It was not even close the defender had possession of the ball because the receiver had one hand on the ball doesn’t make it a catch.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:00 AM
Wrong. Dead wrong. The defender clearly caught the ball first. CLEARLY. That isn’t even up for debate. So simultaneous possession doesn’t come into play if one player has the ball FIRST. It doesn’t. It JUST DOESN’T. You are wrong.
/not a packers fan
September 25th, 2012 at 12:01 AM
Yeahhh… I’m gonna go ahead and trust Gerry Austin’s interpretation of the rule over Lisk’s on this one.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:02 AM
Lisk – is Austin wrong in his interpretation? Serious question
September 25th, 2012 at 12:02 AM
Turned the computer on at home to join the discussion. The outrage by twitter is expected, and stupid
Assuming that the people saying simultaneous possession is unreviewable are right, once that was the call (simultaneous = TD) the refs had no choice. They couldn’t call offensive PI, couldn’t call an interception… really were hamstrung by the intial (and seemingly wrong) call.
I hope that is right though, the people saying they can’t reverse possession. Seems strange the refs would have known and got that right.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:03 AM
But it was called one way.
I agree he had possession first, should have probably been a pick.
As long as everyone saying that realizes there was nothing to be done on replay (assuming that is the right rule, I’m trying to check that)
September 25th, 2012 at 12:03 AM
There’s no angle that shows it all happen. Look at the angle from the back of the end zone, looks to me like Tate’s hand stops the ball and the defender traps it against his hand. But, my question is, when’s possession established? Looks to me like both players have 2 hands on the ball when they hit the ground. Does possession happen before you hit the ground? I really don’t think this can be debated all that much. You have to go with the call and it would have been wrong/right either way.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:04 AM
Fuck the Packers, but that was an interception. Replacement ref situation is beyond ridiculous now.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:04 AM
My WI-born wife is pretty pissed. Saw it was going to replay… “it’s an interception, so they’ll give it to Seattle. Fuck” and walks out of the room.

(c) none of the above. It was an interception, clear as day, from any angle.

September 25th, 2012 at 12:06 AM
My big issue or what I miss about the regular refs is if they called simultaneous possession they would have either said that in their determination of the ruling on the field or in their explanation of the review. I have no clue if the refs were calling simultaneous possession but I can promise the league issued statement will say they were.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:07 AM
His opinion doesn’t matter. He’s watching a crazy play in super slo-mo. Do you really think Gerry Austin is so much better than all the other replay booth officials that have ruled on calls you disagree with?
I also haven’t heard Austin say why there was possession one way or another or when possession gained. He just said his opinion of what happened rather than break it down. Not convinced.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:07 AM
I would rather watch Jerome Bogar aka the Ladies Man referee again. Hes the worst regular ref but is still better than these guys

Austin said when Jennings had the ball controlled with two hands, clutched to his body, and went to the ground, all of that = possession.
Seems pretty clear to me, and I’m delighted to see the Pack lose.

September 25th, 2012 at 12:11 AM
My point was that there is no definitive angle and the play looks differently depending on the angle.
All I really want to hear is an explanation of when the defender had possession. If the defender dropped the ball when he hit the ground, it would be incomplete, yes? So then if Tate has two hands on the ball when they both hit the ground, how is it not simultaneous?
September 25th, 2012 at 12:12 AM
packers-seahwaks fans brawl, knock each other out simultaneously
September 25th, 2012 at 12:12 AM
But Lisk’s does? The only person whose opinion matters is the ref who signaled touchdown. Or maybe the ref who signaled INT.

As annoying as it could seem at times, I would prefer to know why you’re making that call after the review or what exactly the call is going into the review than the after-the-fact Tuesday explanation of why they may have been arguably accidentally right

the seahawks receiver gave the defender the business, then stuck his wangles in the other guy’s whojits. they fell to the ground and the touchdown call was made. i flexed and made it an INT
game over
September 25th, 2012 at 12:17 AM
The catch would have to be simultaneous. The catch wasn’t simultaneous. Jennings caught the ball in the air, Tate put an arm in as Jennings was on the way down, and Jennings came down on two feet with both hands on the ball. Interception.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:19 AM
Joint possession is certainly a rule in the NFL. Not sure anyone besides Lisk and the refs think it actually applies here.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:19 AM
Was simultaneous possession the initial call? Since one ref said INT and one said TD, I assume so.
From that point forward, where was the error. Most plays I’m finding show an INT ruled that should have been simultanous (no INT). I haven’t found one where simultaneous was called, then reversed.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:19 AM
I spent the night playing Civ, what did I miss?
September 25th, 2012 at 12:21 AM
I disagree with the initial call, as it looked like the DB had clear possession first. But everything from that point forward, went the only way it could, unfortunately for GB

The only thing Tate could have done on that play at the time he got his hands, eh, hand on the ball was strip it for an incompletion. Calling it a TD is egregious.

i’d say Interception fwiw.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:29 AM
That really was a tough call live. The announcer thought it was simultaneous. The refs nearby apparently just didn’t see the DB get his hands there just a bit early.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:31 AM
ESPN keeps reading the rule, and it sounds like a fairly compelling argument against the TD call. I still don’t understand what the difference between control and possession is, but they way it’s being defined it seems correct to say the defender had control first, but both the defender and the receiver had simultaneous possession.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:31 AM
Agreed. Only in the NFL if it looks like one thing is it not that thing.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:31 AM
yeah but tate shoved a db like 5 yards as the ball was incoming. missed that, botched the possession. home cooking baby. that an INT in gb?

See photo I added. It is my interpretation the hands were on simultaneous. Yes, DB had *more* of ball after that point and tried to twist, but Tate’s stayed on.
Also, once players hit ground is point where call is made, or should be. If they twist on ground and one player pulls away, shouldn’t matter. Rule book even has various hypos that address when it happens.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:39 AM
Also, once players hit ground is point where call is made, or should be.

And this is all fine and dandy if we ignore the blatant PI call on tate for him to even get his one handed TD reception.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:40 AM
I think there’s an awful lot of yellow and green for self respecting black men to be wearing.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:40 AM
The big issue is that it’s a tough call to make live, and that replay gave the refs no power to get the call right. I’m not sure why possession isn’t reviewable.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:40 AM
I guess because it’s a judgement call, like pass interference.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:40 AM
Also, what is the call on the field when one ref signals touchback and one signals TD? Agree that the Packers were screwed once it was ruled a TD. Not even a reviewable play.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:41 AM
Take a look at this photo and let me know what you think lisk.
if you say anything other than ‘blurry’ lisk i know you;re on the goodell payroll
September 25th, 2012 at 12:41 AM
Yeah that was blatant, though I can’t see regular refs making that call, either.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:42 AM
Yeah that was blatant, though I can’t see regular refs making that call, either.
I know they usually let a lot of stuff go there, and obviously I’m looking through a homer lens, but that was a blatant shove that directly put him in position to catch the ball. I guess we’ll never know.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:43 AM
Let’s not lose sight of what really matters. Getting the photo of Roger Goodell’s face the second this happens, and he realizes they can’t fix it on replay.
I imagine it to be something like the face I made when the puppy had diarrhea, ate it, and then vomited it all over my wife and couch.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:44 AM
ZERO chance that is ruled a TD if that game is in Green Bay. That’s my biggest beef. The refs looked at each other, then went Oh shit, well I guess we’ll go with you, guy signaling TD, because you already have your hands in the air.

My brother had his biggest bet of the season on the Packers -3.
My phone lit up like the 4th of July with texts from him.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:49 AM
your representation of your photo isn’t correct. it wasn’t taken at the moment the ball arrived, it was taken when they were well on the way down. The catch wasn’t made simultaneously, Jennings rose above everyone else and caught the ball in the air. Tate eventually got a hand on the ball, but by definition of the word, the ball was not caught simultaneously. The only thing Tate could have done was stripped the ball and cause an incompletion. Once Jennings came down with both hands on the ball, it was an interception. It shouldn’t have mattered at that point if Tate had 2 hands and 2 feet on the ball.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:50 AM

September 25th, 2012 at 12:53 AM
Either way, once the meek ref who signaled INT went with the crowd and the ref making the TD call, game is over and the Packers were screwed.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:53 AM
Do you all think it was “egregious” of refs to rule simultaneous possession, based on live speed? From the TV, I couldn’t tell, and the ref who called TD had a poor angle.
By the time they got to the ground, the Packer had the ball, but that doesn’t matter (as Lisk outlined).
So if the initial call was reasonable… there really was no other eventual outcome, even if on replay it appeared wrong.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:55 AM

best yet, jekyll, thanks. tate grabs jenning’s arm with one hand when ball arrives but by the time they hit the ground he has both hands in there and it becomes much harder to call. remember, real time
September 25th, 2012 at 1:01 AM
Wouldn’t that mean it’s reasonable, if each saw it a different way from a different angle? I think it was the wrong call, I’m just not sure they really could call much else in real time, and then only reverse it on replay if ball touched the ground.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:01 AM
I hope to read that book once I finish “Players I sat down in fantasy football who then had good weeks”

September 25th, 2012 at 1:03 AM
Have to agree with commentariat. Don’t know how you could look at the play live and in slow motion and think that’s simultaneous possession. Jennings is over Tate. Tate grabs his wrist, not the ball then tries to get both hands on the ball when Jennings is laying on him. Not even close to simultaneous.
Not even talking about Tate shoving someone in the back. Terrible. On the bright side Van Pelt is at Defcon 1 snark level right now.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:06 AM
Slow motion, sure. Live? I didn’t have the refs’ angle, but considering they all were shielded by the players’ backs (by definition of their positioning) I’m not sure it was a crazy call to rule it simultaneous.
I think the “TD” ref thought the ball was wrestled away and was trying to make the right call (which it would be had it been so), and the INT ref may have seen it right, may have called it (wrongly) an INT because of who ended up with it in the end.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:07 AM
Packers fans should complain to their owner. And ny owner I mean one of those fans who paid $250 for a worthless certificate.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:07 AM
Wouldn’t that mean it’s reasonable, if each saw it a different way from a different angle?
I dunno. If someone drops an obvious pass but one ref doesn’t see it that way, is that reasonable? When he should have? Seemed pretty obvious to the naked eye who caught that. Especially given the closer view… which is what the refs had. The TV view as it was live was futher back and harder to see, but the back judge had a clear view, and I think most though Jennings came down with it. Plus the the 3 or 4 PI calls they got wrong which pretty much equaled Seattle’s entire second half of offensive production. Oh and the Bullshit roughing call on the Packers interception the first play after the TD. Oh well though, got New Orleans next week.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:08 AM
Van Pelt is at Defcon 1 snark level right now.
does that involve Trojan brand and an intern named chaz?
September 25th, 2012 at 1:09 AM
True… but irrelevant. Plus Seattle had a few go against them. That 3rd down and goal that was reversed, I didn’t think was the right call. At that point, it would have been 9-7 and Seattle could have gone FG for the win. If if if… it’s a tough loss I’m sure, but after helmet catch, my ability to feel pity, or pain, is blunted.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:11 AM

Jennings got the first down the first play. Bad. Spot. Rodgers got the first down on the second play. bad pot. They totally bungled that though. They should have spotted the ball and measured. They seemed to go by the yellow line. LOL.
Bottom line, league’s “integrity” took a hit tonight. can we all agree on that?

September 25th, 2012 at 1:15 AM
They missed blatant holding on a far bigger play (4Q SB > any regular season moment). It happens. Was the wrong call, but I don’t think the process was as much in error.
As for Lisk’s interpretation: simultaneous contact isn’t the same as simultaneous possession.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:16 AM
Based on his tweets, I’m convinced Lisk either had the Seahawks +3 or likes to be contrarian. Still like the guy though.
Again, ZERO chance that is ruled a TV on the field if that’s in Green Bay, and that seems to be my biggest issue as I head to bed.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:17 AM
*ruled a TD. TD

September 25th, 2012 at 1:17 AM
Problem with still photos on controversial calls is you can pick any point to show what you want. I trust the tape more than any still photos people have on this, regardless of what side they fall on. And from the tape I thought it was a pick.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:18 AM
I assume you were watching the same game I was. Were you watching in Seattle, you may not have thought that. They looked iffy, and if you are sure they were first downs, my guess is that is tinted by green and gold glasses.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:18 AM
Bottom line, league’s “integrity” took a hit tonight. can we all agree on that?
no. where was the integrity before?
the only way this would have been reversed is through review. replacement refs three levels up, in the league’s noisiest place, with one of the league darlings in the house, live speed…making that TD call would have been almost as discussed as an INT call.
i don’t see integrity as a factor here
September 25th, 2012 at 1:19 AM
Lisk seems to think because tate’s ass is on the ground it means something, when there’s no conceivable way you could argue that he had possession of the ball at that point, given the video and the still photos.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:19 AM
I love to be contrarian, but even I can only get so far as “wrong call, but not egregious in the process”. Sleep it off, brother.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:20 AM
They looked iffy, and if you are sure they were first downs, my guess is that is tinted by green and gold glasses.
Noted Bears fan Diesel tweeted that those were horrible spots, as did Lisk I think. I’m too lazy to look it up, but they’re there.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:20 AM
making that TD call would have been almost as discussed as an INT call.
fucked that up. making the INT call would have been nearly as controversial. was there overwhelming evidence to overturn? not overwhelming, but i think the vast majority of us see an INT not a TD
September 25th, 2012 at 1:21 AM
Here’s Lisk’s tweet regarding the spots.
September 25th, 2012 at 1:22 AM
The overturn part doesn’t matter since it’s not reviewable, which is the biggest issue at hand.
K. I trust you then. Looked off to me, but I wasn’t looking super close, either.

Last thought, if they were calling simultaneous possession then why was there a review at all? There didn’t seem to be any question if the ball hit the ground or if Jennings stepped out of bounds. Again, why I would really like an explanation of what exactly the call on the field was, what from that call is being reviewed, and what the review determined when the replacement refs go under the hood.

Based on his tweets, I’m convinced Lisk either had the Seahawks +3 or likes to be contrarian. Still like the guy though.
Again, ZERO chance that is ruled a TV on the field if that’s in Green Bay, and that seems to be my biggest issue as I head to bed.
I think I picked Seattle with the points in the Pigsplosion but I assure you that’s the extent of any interest. No money.
If I were a contrarian for its own sake, I would write a lot more posts where I took a contrarian position to get page views.
I also wrote this within 15 seconds of the game ending and watching some replays, wasn’t on twitter actively watching what others were saying. At the time I said that, by the way, the announcers were not sure what it was. Only after I hit publish did the talking heads unanimously start lambasting the call.
I am not convinced I am right. I certainly wouldn’t stake my reputation on it like the Draughn non-fumble yesterday. I do think it was a close call. But hey, if everyone wants to take out their replacement ref frustration, have at it. I think this overall refereeing situation stinks and there were plenty of bad calls tonight.

I know you’re not. Just giving you a hard time. That was tough one to swallow.
Seems every Packer on twitter has something to say about this. Goodell can’t suspend them all, right?

*That game was just a tough one to swallow

Absolutely fair point, I was surprised how fast this post went up.
I think you are wrong as well as many others, but we still love you Lisk. Too much great writing and analysis to lose cred on an opinion on an admittedly fast, obstructed play

I actually wish there was more outrage. I know it’s the right and responsible thing to handle it the way McCarthy did, but fuck that after tonight. That call plus others should have the Packers blasting the refs and the league for letting it get to this point

Frank Gore on twitter:
“Yo, I love all races, but the white man is the damn devil for tonight. Sorry, y’all, blame Roger Goodell!”
September 25th, 2012 at 1:57 AM
This isn’t just Packers losing their shit on twitter, a lot of players are laying into Goodell and the NFL and daring them to fine them/saying they don’t care

Turns out it’s fake account. My bad

Well, yeah.
This. Agree also with Weapon X. The officials’ inconsistency all game feeds into the outrage at the final call.
I’ll be relieved when the regular officials get back on the field for good.
As for Frank Gore, “c’mon, man”. No need to go in that direction.

Packers=Grown Adult Whiners
The old refs weren’t that good either. It’s part of the game. Maybe if they played better they wouldn’t have provided a chance for the seahawks to split QUAD COVERAGE and come down with the ball. Great effort and way to grind one out.
I hope the packers cry their way out of the playoffs.
