Once again, J-Mac bringing the NY bias. Make up your mind Jason – is this a sports blog, a personal hobby, a dong showcase, a political forum (nobody reads the comments), or the easiest way to make 7 figures scamming a company in the death spiral like Gannett.

Very true, however, they still shouldn’t be getting a pension.

The refs asking for a pension is laughably idiotic.

The internet is full of haters and often lacks context. The guy who is working part time with the NFL as a ref is not the equivalent in responsibility or stature to the person working 15 hours a week at McDonalds just because they’re both part time workers.

My wife and I haven’t made that in the last 3 months! Oh wait, decimal was in the wrong spot. We have.

I’m more saying they need to get everyone, including stars, where now I think they are hesitant because they don’t want to have to suspend players that could swing the game one way or another.

i agree with this, however, having stricter fines up front could help prevent NFL’s version of goons flying around the field as well trying to “put some hot sauce” on the other team.

Now, if they were asking for more money, and in turn the NFL says, “We’ll give you more money, and a pension, if you become full-time officials, and spend the off-season working on getting better.” That is something I would support.

The bottom line is the replacement official are starting to become more a part of the game than they should, and it’s only going to get worse. sucks they are being put in the position they are in, but they are still doing a job and need to be accountable for it. sympathy only goes so far.

sympathy is easy. empathy is harder to give, and empathy is what I have for them.

Also, the refs may ply their trade one day a week but they have to memorize the rule book and are trained throughout the offseason. Also, I know several National Guardsmen who have spent several tours overseas. They do not pick up litter.

Didn’t see the play, but disagree on meting out different penalties for stars vs. average Joes.

I’m not advocating that so much as enforcing the rules you supposedly have in place, or just getting rid of them entirely. But Reed being suspended does make a bigger impact than a backup LB or something who hits someone on STs. it was an interesting article you posted. I remembered seeing one of those “week in the life…” NFL films things a few years ago on the referees. Definitely interesting seeing them on their weekly routine.

The reason the refs usually come from high paying positions is so they wont be susceptible to things like bribes.

Could they replace an NFL ref if given just a few weeks/months notice like these current refs? Probably not.

The old refs put the NFL in a tough position, and the league is surviving. They’re fucked.

I detest the fact that NBA officials give stars calls that others wouldn’t get. A foul should be a foul.
