Darrelle Revis: Torn ACL, Out For the Season. The Jets Are Done.
Darrelle Revis, the best cornerback in the NFL, is out for the season with a torn ACL, the Jets just announced. What a devastating blow to the Jets, who just got lucky to beat Miami, 23-20 in overtime, and improve to 2-1. Revis, without question, is the most important player on the team, and arguably as valuable to New York as Tom Brady is to the Patriots. Defensively, this will force the Jets to change everything, since Revis was good enough to handle the team’s best opposing receiver without safety help.
The Jets, who already have safety issues – Bell, Landry and Smith might be the worst trio in the AFC – play the 49ers, Texans, Colts and Patriots next in a stretch that will likely determine the season.
In place of Revis, the Jets will turn to 3rd year corner Kyle Wilson – a first round pick who has been a bust, and committed a terrible pass interference call Sunday that helped Miami get into position for a game-tying field goal – as the starter.
The Jets’ defense – overrated by the pundits to begin with (something I detailed in the season preview) – now will put more pressure on the offense to produce.

He should have held out.

Wow. I mean I dont like him or the Jets, but that still sucks.
Solution: Tebow

First the concussion issue, now this. Feel bad for the guy.
Not a fan of Wilson. He seems to be wrong place/wrong time way too much.

Jennings, who won the last three gold medals with partner Misty May Treanor, told Matt Lauer that “when I was throwing my body around fearlessly, and going for gold for our country, I was pregnant, and today I’m 11 weeks pregnant.”
I’m sure her kid will appreciate that when it’s born with the intelligence of most Jets fans.

that all changed when Tebow came to town.
September 24th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
Revis, without question, is the most important player on the team
I’d argue that the QB is almost always the most important QB on the team. Jets don’t have one of those either though.
September 24th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
sucks for revis. great for the AFC east.
interesting to see how the jets defense will modify their scheme now that they may have to commit more than 1 CB to the top receiver on a team and how that could impact their pass rush possibilities.
September 24th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
dammit. screwed the pooch on that comment. You know what I mean though.
September 24th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
What does a torn ACL matter to Revis? If it’s not in his grabbing muscles, he should be just as effective as ever.

After looking at the rest of their schedule, I don’t agree. Indy, Miami, at St Louis, at Jax, at Tennessee, San Diego and at Buffalo are all winnable games. If they sneak a win out against the Pats they can still go 9-7.

yes. this was the final straw, because a healthy reavis fixes the offense
btw, does anyone feel badly for the replacement refs? i mean, they have a pretty big order to fill, and they are not the next level down, as everyone knows. they are several levels down. would you like D3 umps in MLB?

That’s how every fat chick with a flat ass thinks their ass looks.
September 24th, 2012 at 12:34 PM
I don’t hate him, but those were two iffy plays, that are on their way out of the league, and really need to be enforced on top players in order to make any sort of statement. I don’t think he’s a terrible human being or anything, but unfortunately for him those are hits which just can’t happen anymore.
If Reed was suspended, it makes an impact. A $5k fine for him, he shrugs it off.
September 24th, 2012 at 12:34 PM
do we know what the replacement refs are being paid?
September 24th, 2012 at 12:35 PM
do we know what the replacement refs are being paid?
2K a game. Regular ref’s got either 6K or 8K, can’t recall.
September 24th, 2012 at 12:35 PM
I heard on the radio around $2,000 a game. Not sure how accurate that actually is.
September 24th, 2012 at 12:35 PM
Presumably, with 20% off coupons to shop at NFL.com.
September 24th, 2012 at 12:36 PM
• The NFL will pay the head referee $3,500 per regular-season game. The six others on the field will make $3,000 per game.
• The head referee will make about 6.5 times less than the lowest-paid player on the field. The rookie who is getting paid a minimum will make $22,941 a week.
• At $1,058,823 per weekly paycheck, Peyton Manning will make 302 times more than the head referee officiating the game.

no. they don’t have to be replacement refs if they don’t want to be.
September 24th, 2012 at 12:39 PM
And what is the deal with the regular refs asking for a pension? These guys have regular jobs where I’d imagine they have some kind of retirement fund. Who gets a pension from their part time job?
the argument for their bold requests is that there are only so many people on the planet who can do what they do as well as they do for such a huge organization. there must be a lot of prep each week and before seasons for the officiating job, and they have to balance that with their ‘day’ career
September 24th, 2012 at 12:39 PM

It’s a low-risk job you do one day a week. It’s basically like being in the National Guard, but you throw flags instead of picking up litter. Throw a few bucks from that in savings account. I think you’ll be okay.
September 24th, 2012 at 12:40 PM
Sofias butt looks like cleavage.

September 24th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
Ed Reed is good people.
September 24th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
I thought this at first, but I came to the conclusion he was aiming down and was going to hit the head anyway. Like I said, it’s tough to single out Reed for it, but if the NFL wants those hits to go away, they have to make a statement.
September 24th, 2012 at 12:41 PM
i haven’t made 150,000 in the 8 years I’ve been out of college. These regular refs need to get the fuck out on the field

It’s a low-risk job you do one day a week. It’s basically like being in the National Guard, but you throw flags instead of picking up litter.
so you could do it?
it’s not a one-day job. there’s video work, prep time, etc. you don;t think they review the players/teams/coaches for their upcoming game? and what about fitness? they might do extra or any at all if they don’t already
i’m not saying woe is them, but you are minimizing greatly
September 24th, 2012 at 12:46 PM
Oh he’s getting much more than 5K. I think it was Mayo who got something like 20k last week for a seemingly innocuous hit.
September 24th, 2012 at 12:47 PM
Right, because James Harrison’s suspensions has sent a shiver down the collective spines of players throughout the League.
September 24th, 2012 at 12:48 PM
here’s a nice story on what it takes to be an official
September 24th, 2012 at 12:48 PM
did the NFL involuntarily draft these replacement refs into service?
They’ve had months to actually sit down, crack open the rule book and really understand the intricacies of the game. sure, it’s complicated, but they are terrible at their job. it’s a fact. give them sympathy, it’s what Goodell wants so he can win his negotiation with the real ref’s, he doesn’t want sympathy for these guys b/c they are human beings doing a terrible job at something they signed up for voluntarily.
September 24th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
Dumbest thing said on this site. Specifically about the National Guard. Also, the refs may ply their trade one day a week but they have to memorize the rule book and are trained throughout the offseason. Also, I know several National Guardsmen who have spent several tours overseas. They do not pick up litter.
September 24th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
Seriously?
September 24th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
I guess better he tear it now than in the last game of the season. Jets aren’t a playoff team this year with him, at least he should be good to go at the start of 2013
September 24th, 2012 at 12:53 PM
The reason the refs usually come from high paying positions is so they wont be susceptible to things like bribes.
September 24th, 2012 at 12:54 PM
Kaiser it doesnt matter how long they have had. It matters what level they came from. Huge step up
September 24th, 2012 at 12:54 PM
depends if he likes his contract starting next season or not. injured knee or not, he could still hold out if he wanted to. whether that’s smart or not is another question
September 24th, 2012 at 12:54 PM
Yeah, journalism sucks.
September 24th, 2012 at 12:54 PM
Didn’t see the play, but disagree on meting out different penalties for stars vs. average Joes.
I detest the fact that NBA officials give stars calls that others wouldn’t get. A foul should be a foul.
September 24th, 2012 at 12:55 PM
So hire him golfercraig. You are in that position or can help with some contacts i bet
September 24th, 2012 at 12:55 PM
No, but they’re helpin’ to take out the trash!
September 24th, 2012 at 12:57 PM
Any reasonable sample of the “best” refs at any level could adequately replace a NFL ref if given enough of time.
Could they replace an NFL ref if given just a few weeks/months notice like these current refs? Probably not.
The old refs put the NFL in a tough position, and the league is surviving. They’re fucked.
September 24th, 2012 at 12:57 PM

September 24th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
it was an interesting article you posted. I remembered seeing one of those “week in the life…” NFL films things a few years ago on the referees. Definitely interesting seeing them on their weekly routine.
The bottom line is the replacement official are starting to become more a part of the game than they should, and it’s only going to get worse. sucks they are being put in the position they are in, but they are still doing a job and need to be accountable for it. sympathy only goes so far.
September 24th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
Ed Reed is awesome
September 24th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
That was entirely tongue-in-cheek. Have we not met before?
I’m not advocating that so much as enforcing the rules you supposedly have in place, or just getting rid of them entirely. But Reed being suspended does make a bigger impact than a backup LB or something who hits someone on STs. I’m more saying they need to get everyone, including stars, where now I think they are hesitant because they don’t want to have to suspend players that could swing the game one way or another.

sympathy is easy. empathy is harder to give, and empathy is what I have for them.
September 24th, 2012 at 1:05 PM
The refs asking for a pension is laughably idiotic.
Now, if they were asking for more money, and in turn the NFL says, “We’ll give you more money, and a pension, if you become full-time officials, and spend the off-season working on getting better.” That is something I would support.
September 24th, 2012 at 1:05 PM
i agree with this, however, having stricter fines up front could help prevent NFL’s version of goons flying around the field as well trying to “put some hot sauce” on the other team.
September 24th, 2012 at 1:05 PM
spit-take
September 24th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
The internet is full of haters and often lacks context. The guy who is working part time with the NFL as a ref is not the equivalent in responsibility or stature to the person working 15 hours a week at McDonalds just because they’re both part time workers.
September 24th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
Very true, however, they still shouldn’t be getting a pension.
