Sunday Night Football: Torrey Smith Takes the Field with a Heavy Heart After Brother’s Death
The Ravens and Patriots go back at it after Baltimore gave New England all they wanted in the AFC Championship Game, only to come up a Lee Evans non-catch and a Billy Cundiff missed field goal away from the Super Bowl. Torrey Smith will be playing tonight, just like he did in that game, but he will be taking the field under the most difficult of circumstances.
His younger brother, Tevin, died last night in a motorcycle crash. Torrey was very involved in raising his younger brother, and tweeted out after the news: “I can’t believe my little brother is gone…be thankful for your loved ones and tell them you love them…this is the hardest thing ever.”
The crash occurred in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Torrey left the team to be with his family. He is reportedly going to be back with the team tonight and playing. I don’t know how he’s going to do it.

Did pretty good picking last week. This week was polar opposites. “Pick which teams you think will win, Meth, and then watch them not get beaten, but fucking destroyed.”
September 23rd, 2012 at 8:47 PM
I picked every one right
September 23rd, 2012 at 8:47 PM
I would trade any two players on the Lions not named Suh, Calvin and Stafford for Ed Reed. Yeah I know this is his last year or two. I don’t care. Hate so many Lions players.
September 23rd, 2012 at 8:49 PM
I picked every one right
Congrats. Now go treat yourself to a dang quesadilla.
September 23rd, 2012 at 8:49 PM
You wouldn’t trade Stafford? Have you grown a soft spot for the hillbilly?
September 23rd, 2012 at 8:50 PM
Steelers gave up 30 points once last year, have already done it twice now after the freaking hapless Raiders put up 34. Polamalu and Harrison make too much money to be sitting on their ass, get out there.

Fucking Patriots, working on that nail in my Week 3 picks’ coffin.
September 23rd, 2012 at 8:56 PM
No, he’s immensely talented. He played well today. I don’t know why he avoided Calvin earlier. I blame the retard OC and that doofus Pettigrew. I just don’t get it. Same thing happened in the first half of last year. Hillbilly needs to ignore the OC, and go to Calvin earlier.

i’ve got a bad feeling this game will be decided on a string of bad penalty calls/non calls

These announcers are going overboard on the officiating.

September 23rd, 2012 at 9:33 PM
not really, the announcers are the only ones that can really get the point across to the audience and be the voice the players, coaches and front office are forbidden to have with the league pushing the boundaries of the game’s integrity.

That’s pretty funny. I’ve seen my share of ugly women, as have we all. Can’t say I’ve ever looked at one and thought of a carp.

Yeah – the officiating thing is getting overblown. They’re letting them play for the most part – not a bad thing. Picking up that flag in the end zone – I get it – there was contact but not much else.
Two things:
1. Announcers who are former players are making a big deal about it b/c of the whole union thing.
2. The coaches being jackasses (Fox – I’m talking about you) are blowing it out and should be fined for their behavior.
/Steve Young is an idiot

September 23rd, 2012 at 9:41 PM
There never should have been a flag there. There were plenty of bullshit calls, and letting things get out of hand though. The refs fucking blow this game, and if you can’t see that, I can’t help you.

Totally diff issue. The game is getting played with few flags. Not a bad thing.

there’s a difference between allowing some increased contact and keeping the flags tucked away and missing some blatant calls and being inconsistent about how you call plays from play to play.
what we see with these refs is the latter, across the board in all games.

Just like any other Sunday in the NFL I’ve ever watched. I get that these aren’t the best officials working the game, but I don’t need the announcers over selling this to me.

Who is this asshole???
The rumors of his not being able to beat coverage are true. Decent hands, has to be ‘thrown’ open though. Is that a system WR? Still beats Ocho though.
September 23rd, 2012 at 10:44 PM
Set the over/under for number of PIs/game the first week the real refs are back?
I’m mostly annoyed that while these refs suck, the first big blown call by the real refs will blow up twitter with snarky “should have kept the replacement refs”. Assholes are soooo predictable.
September 23rd, 2012 at 10:46 PM
For as much as I hate the re-signing of an aging overweight player, Wilfork has been great since his extension, and really impressed (and surprised) at the work he’s done to keep himself in shape. He was basically as close to a one-man defense as you can be last year.
September 23rd, 2012 at 10:48 PM
Wilfork has been great since his extension
That’s because he’s a fucking lard ass. He was quite possibly the biggest human being I’ve ever seen with my own two eyes, and that was from the second deck.
September 23rd, 2012 at 10:50 PM
he’s taking the right steps to extending his career, i do see his replacement drafted in the next draft or two, however.
to be honest, i think it fits in this game. there’s not a lot of open downfield opportunities, so having a guy like Lloyd on the outside who can nail those hook routes and out routes is pretty important in this offense.
September 23rd, 2012 at 10:52 PM
i saw him at the player entrance in 2008 at gillette. holy shit. arms bigger than a thanksgiving turkey.
September 23rd, 2012 at 10:52 PM
Based on how awful the Pats’ defense was last year, it stands to reason.
September 23rd, 2012 at 10:54 PM
arms bigger than a thanksgiving turkey.
Thanksgiving turkeys tremble in fear at the mention of Wilfork’s name.
September 23rd, 2012 at 10:56 PM
I like him, still need a downfield threat though… maybe BB can develop one HAHAHAHAHA
I think the young tackles they have are his replacement, and you’ll see a lot more 4-3 in the future. Though I’m sure BB will draft a few more hybrid DL-DEs, since he loves them.
September 23rd, 2012 at 11:02 PM
Oof. Reed still doing the headhunting. You could make a case it was somewhat inadvertent, but you’d be wrong. Those hits are only going to stop with repeated suspensions. If the NFL says that safety is important (doesn’t seem like it is to them, at all) and wants to show it, there are going to have to be some serious games missed.
Can’t imagine how many games Rodney Harrison would have missed in his career if those rules were in place 20 years ago.
September 23rd, 2012 at 11:03 PM
eventually they will get lightning in a bottle and just get a fast guy with good hands. teach him three plays: fade, screen and slant. don’t worry about anything else.
even with a 4-3, i see them with one big guy to give them a versatile hybrid defense. if they find his replacement that’s one hell of a front 7 for a couple seasons.
September 23rd, 2012 at 11:04 PM
Can’t imagine how many games Rodney Harrison would have missed in his career if those rules were in place 20 years ago.
Probably wouldn’t have been anybody left to play. Everybody’d be banned.
September 23rd, 2012 at 11:06 PM
Even with the rule changes, high profile guys are still getting blown up. I hope the powers that be can come up with a way to make the game truly safer while giving us the illusion of danger.

September 23rd, 2012 at 11:06 PM
Cowboys had a few safeties (Dareen Woodson and Roy Williams) who would have had some trouble. Rod Woodson would have had some issues.
Basically any safety who made a Pro-Bowl from 1990-2005 would have been hearing from NY every Tuesday.
September 23rd, 2012 at 11:07 PM
this is a good weekend for the NFL to lay down the law… enough cases in every game it will get the attention again.
however, the question is: the players are now pushing the limits of the replacement refs trying to get away with stuff… so even if the league makes players miss games, does it have an impact if the replacement refs continue to call games? no
September 23rd, 2012 at 11:08 PM
so even if the league makes players miss games, does it have an impact if the replacement refs continue to call games? no
I’d have to disagree with you on that one. Those dudes don’t like missing games, and more importantly, money.
September 23rd, 2012 at 11:12 PM
Flacco reminding me of Manning today. Both are making some good throws, but both had a high number of interceptions dropped.

there’s always someone who will do it if the only repercussion is a fine, if the nFL suspends players then it will curb it… but the odds of the NFL doing that… i think it’s slim.
September 23rd, 2012 at 11:16 PM

September 23rd, 2012 at 11:23 PM
No worries man. I do agree with you though, fines + suspensions puts a halt to all that shit quick, whether its real or replacement refs. That’s the point I was trying to make, that missing games and money is something players will try and avoid no matter who’s out there.
September 23rd, 2012 at 11:24 PM
I like those hits, but the head shots make me cringe. I’m sure even regular hits are bad when your hear bounces off the turf though.

Pats can keep running, but 2 minutes and 3 TOs is plenty to get into FG range. Need at least one more first to even think you are running the clock down.

September 23rd, 2012 at 11:41 PM
Don’t like the TO here. Those 12 seconds aren’t as important as the ability to get the ball back even with another first down. One first and the game is over now…
It’s better than when teams call TOs and end up having the 2 minute warning come on a change of possession (and the clock would be stopped anyway.
September 23rd, 2012 at 11:42 PM
Regular refs would have probably enforced the Brady rules and called roughing the passer on that sack. These replacement refs are good for something.
