Jimmy V foundation has built up a very large endowment over the years. Investment income from the endowment pays all overhead expenses and salaries, so as of now, 100% of contributions goes directly to cancer research.

That’s how you run a charity.

I’ve ridden in a fundraiser for the James Cancer hospital for the last 3 years called Pelotonia.

You know Lance Arstrong made the James pay him a $250k appearance fee for the first Peletonia?

I’ve ridden in a fundraiser for the James Cancer hospital for the last 3 years called Pelotonia. The admin costs are covered by sign up fees, usually paid by the company you represent. 100% of donations go to cancer research. It’s the only charity I spend my time on now.

It is really sad too because while they do good, it is staggering the amount of money that goes in versus how much actually reaches the intended target

I know that their actions have done good, but it’s pretty ridiculous that all they are is an aggregator of donations. They don’t actually do anything but cash and write checks, after skimming off the top of course.

The United Way can easily see that being administrative costs.

Here’s my United Way story, and why I will not give them a penny:

Back in my early newspapering days, my paper was a big United Way booster, and as a rookie I was assigned to cover a United Way breakfast meeting where they touted how much they’d raised. This was a lavish affair at a nice hotel, lot of movers and shakers in the community there, and all they ended up talking about was the plush new United Way HQ they were building.
I started looking into this, wondering how much $$$ was going to this HQ and other overhead instead of charity. Not long afterward, one of my lower-level editors took me aside and recommended that I drop the story.

The paper prided itself on having 100% participation among employees in its United Way fund-raising, so later that year, when I refused to contribute, I got called on the carpet in a room full of my bosses, including the editor-in-chief, and was grilled on why I was not contributing. I simply told them I had my reasons and left it at that. They were very unhappy, because I wrecked the 100% status, and to this day I’m still unsure how close I came to getting fired over it.

Not long after that, all the details came out nationally about the United Way president blowing $$$ on trips, vacations, his mistress, etc.

So, yes, fuck the United Way.
