Mitch Albom and His Charity Are Being Sued
Mitch Albom, columnist, author, radio host, playwright, musician – did I forget anything? – is being sued.
From the Detroit News:
Best-selling author Mitch Albom and one of his charities are in a legal battle over who has the rights to own and operate an orphanage in Haiti.
Operators of the Caring and Sharing Mission in Port Au Prince are suing Albom and his A Hole in the Roof Foundation.
They allege the Detroit Free Press columnist committed fraud and misrepresented his “intent of taking over the title and real estate ownership interest of the plaintiffs,” according to a complaint filed Tuesday in Oakland Circuit Court.
The Free Press, the paper where Albom is a columnist, had this:
Albom referred questions to his attorney, Eric Scheible of Bloomfield Hills, who accused Hearn and his foundation of trying to extort money from Albom and his foundation.
“The allegations are patently false,” Scheible said. “I think it’s a money grab, a way to extort some money after all of the time, effort and resources that all of these volunteers have put into the mission.”
Chad Audi, who co-founded Albom’s foundation and who serves as president and CEO of Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, agreed. He said Hearn’s lawsuit seeks only money but says nothing about Hearn wishing to operate the mission or help the children.
“They’re using Mitch’s name to bring more attention to the matter and make sure they get some money,” Audi said.
So did Albom see an opportunity to swoop in, “save the day,” pump up the foundation in his column, and generate a lot of money?
That year, the Detroit-based nonprofit group took in $312,464, of which $93,816 went to build “bathrooms, showers, dorms and a kitchen for mission/orphanage in Haiti for residents of Port Au Prince, Haiti following the earthquake,” the documents state.
Besides Albom, the paperwork lists Dr. Chad Audi as treasurer and the author’s wife, Janine Sabino, as secretary. None reported receiving any pay or benefits from the charity.

I only donate to charities willing to put their people right outside the exit of stores I frequent. If a kid is selling any type of candy outside of my local Shop n’ Save they’re gonna get my money. Same goes for the Salvation Army. Hell, those folks might even get a hot cup of coffee because it’s so damn cold. They could be a front for something illegal..I don’t know, don’t care…

Here’s my United Way story, and why I will not give them a penny:
Back in my early newspapering days, my paper was a big United Way booster, and as a rookie I was assigned to cover a United Way breakfast meeting where they touted how much they’d raised. This was a lavish affair at a nice hotel, lot of movers and shakers in the community there, and all they ended up talking about was the plush new United Way HQ they were building.
I started looking into this, wondering how much $$$ was going to this HQ and other overhead instead of charity. Not long afterward, one of my lower-level editors took me aside and recommended that I drop the story.
The paper prided itself on having 100% participation among employees in its United Way fund-raising, so later that year, when I refused to contribute, I got called on the carpet in a room full of my bosses, including the editor-in-chief, and was grilled on why I was not contributing. I simply told them I had my reasons and left it at that. They were very unhappy, because I wrecked the 100% status, and to this day I’m still unsure how close I came to getting fired over it.
Not long after that, all the details came out nationally about the United Way president blowing $$$ on trips, vacations, his mistress, etc.
So, yes, fuck the United Way.

I know that their actions have done good, but it’s pretty ridiculous that all they are is an aggregator of donations. They don’t actually do anything but cash and write checks, after skimming off the top of course.

Add the Komen Foundation to that as well.

I think after the Susan G thing this last year, United Way and it’s past stuff, and the Race for the cure peeps, people have gotten a little bit wary of all this “Charity” stuff. It is really sad too because while they do good, it is staggering the amount of money that goes in versus how much actually reaches the intended target.

From what I hear, the Jimmy V foundation uses 100% of its donations for cancer research. I suppose someone else is funding the administrative costs.

I’ve ridden in a fundraiser for the James Cancer hospital for the last 3 years called Pelotonia. The admin costs are covered by sign up fees, usually paid by the company you represent. 100% of donations go to cancer research. It’s the only charity I spend my time on now.

You know Lance Arstrong made the James pay him a $250k appearance fee for the first Peletonia?
\Not that the Peletonia is bad, but Armstrong’s a dick.

Jimmy V foundation has built up a very large endowment over the years. Investment income from the endowment pays all overhead expenses and salaries, so as of now, 100% of contributions goes directly to cancer research.
That’s how you run a charity.
