Thursday Night Football: New York Giants at Carolina Panthers
The New York Giants and Carolina Panthers will engage in a game of “is anyone healthy?”. Ahmad Bradshaw is out. Hakeem Nicks has been ruled out. For Carolina, running back Jonathan Stewart is out. The quarterbacks, though, will be playing, and two teams that can be exploited defensively will be turning around on short rest as well.
Both enter at 1-1 after winning last week, with the Giants completing an amazing comeback and the Panthers moving at will against the Saints. This may be week 3, but I have to believe this is going to be one of those swing games we’ll be looking back in December in regard to tiebreakers. Victor Cruz and Steve Smith should find big plays available, and the team that generates them will win. The Giants won their share of these last year, and got into the playoffs where they got healthy and peaked. The Panthers are learning to play in these big games. If you don’t have occasion to see Cam Newton play frequently, this is one of your few primetime opportunities in 2012.
The Line: Carolina by 1
The picks: Both Stephen and I will take Carolina in advance of tomorrow’s Pigsplosion. Take heart, Giants fans, we took the Bears and the points a week ago.

Don’t know the brunette in the white dress, singing the promo. She’s got answers, though. Great muscle tone in the arms & shoulders.

sorry, had to pull the Giants post for news. will return at 715. check out what just happened!!!
where was the news that resulted in the world’s most popular league having a game post pulled?
/fucking awesome sentence, that

Alright… half hour till I go home and have some pumpkin beer with my wife.
Any thoughts for Pick’em? NYG @ CAR -1.5. Leaning NYG. Not a big Cam fan, really.
September 20th, 2012 at 7:40 PM
I stink at gambling. But, Nicks & Bradshaw are both out. Looks like “toss up”, to me.
September 20th, 2012 at 7:45 PM
tomorrow’s Pigsplosion.
That pulls me through the last couple of hours on a Friday. Would be better if the Weekly Roundup would also run again on Friday afternoons.
September 20th, 2012 at 7:47 PM
That Gamboa post yesterday reminded me of the Friday Flashbacks posts. I liked those. I also imagine they required a ton of time/work to get ready.

Oh, hell yes, that had to be a ton of work. Lisk needs that time this fall to tabulate the Experimental College Team Based Fantasy Emporium. That is going to be some work.

Not to get too far into my personal life, but the microscope just ran out of memory on my last scan of the day. I might break something.
September 20th, 2012 at 7:54 PM
I like the value of NYG here. Super Bowl champs trying to get their feet under them vs. a team that’s up and coming but still needs to prove it in the W column. I don’t see Bradshaw as a big loss. Diehl hurts.
Coughlin is going to scream at Eli to keep this under control. Giants are a badass road team. LOCK IT UP.

Needs more Faith Hill, in a much shorter skirt than she wears on MNF.
September 20th, 2012 at 8:02 PM
Nada, Faith Hill sings on Sunday Night Football.
September 20th, 2012 at 8:03 PM
It would be very entertaining if, with Carolina leading by 3 in the final seconds, Cam takes a knee on his own 25 and Coughlin orders the defense to try to knock the ball losse.

What punters really do
4pm – Land in opposing city. Stare numbly out bus window at random people in cars on freeway. Imagine life stories for each one; sadly all end in tragic circumstances involving common household appliances and farm animals.
What a douche.
September 20th, 2012 at 8:43 PM
Meth, it was hilarious.
September 20th, 2012 at 8:44 PM
I do that in malls and airport terminals. I don’t include the farm animals, though.
September 20th, 2012 at 8:44 PM
Meth, didnt see you today in the AM Roundup, wanted to give you some of my picks. Like IND -3 vs JA, like the Home Dog with CLE +3 vs BUF, TB +7 vs DAL and SF -6.5 vs MIN. Good luck with your picks
September 20th, 2012 at 8:45 PM
Newton runs the option pretty well for a big guy. He can’t possibly do it indefinitely, can he?

I’m thinking of switching the Ravens and Packers to the 5 team card, and the Falcons and Skins to the 4 team.

What’s got you sold on Cleveland, Caribou?
September 20th, 2012 at 8:58 PM
I was always told “you can’t run that college stuff in the pros. You’ll get broken”. Newton seems to be big enough to take the contact…for now.
/cue lightning & eerie organ music
September 20th, 2012 at 8:58 PM
Another thing, I found out from the guy on day shift I’ve been doing the “wrong” cards. I thought I was doing the low level cards, but that’s not the case. He showed me the others that he usually does, they’ve got smaller spreads for the favorites and bigger spreads for the underdogs. He said it’s easier to win on those cards, but for significant payouts you’ve gotta do at least 8 teams.
September 20th, 2012 at 9:03 PM
/cue lightning & eerie organ music
That’s what happens every time I open a canned beverage in this establishment.
September 20th, 2012 at 9:03 PM
I like the 5 card, with the only team that kinda scares me is DET -7.5. DET coming off a short week and playing away again. They have not covered their last 4 AWAY games.
Same goes for the 3 card with DET -7.5 again.
September 20th, 2012 at 9:05 PM
only team that kinda scares me is DET -7.5.
Detroit is only -3.5 over Titans. You don’t think they can cover that?
September 20th, 2012 at 9:05 PM
just checked the stats, I picked up that Brown for a waiver pickup today. My league is a 12-man league and you only get 5 moves all year so I was timid about burning one but it’d help if he gets loose. My only real weakness is #2 RB.
Brown has 57 already

Nada, started Stendhal’s Scarlet and Black, good call. As people say Dostoevsky came from Googol I can see Zola coming from Stendhal. Even Googol and Stendhal are similar addressing the reader directly and taking shots at the writing and people of their time. Cheers.
September 20th, 2012 at 9:10 PM
If you have a QB that is going to run, I feel you need a solid running game to pair with the QB to make the defense respect that other runner and prevent them from dogging that QB all over the place.
The hits will add up though. It’s been that way for every mobile QB for all of time. Some just last longer than others. Steve Young and Randall lasted to become nice passers. Vick still makes too many bad mistakes.
September 20th, 2012 at 9:11 PM
I think CLE Def is better than most people think. CLE is gonna pound Richardson. The games between these 2 teams is usually less than a TD. I know that means BUF is only laying 3, but I like the Home Dog
September 20th, 2012 at 9:16 PM
whoa, whoa, my bad. I looked quickly at the lines you listed and saw -7.5 which was the SF/MIN game above the DET game. My bad. That does make a difference then. I run nos. on a spreadsheet and then factor in a Power Rating for each team. I got a score of DET 36 TEN 21
September 20th, 2012 at 9:18 PM
I think Stendahl invented snark.
The whole time I was reading it, for some reason, I pictured Joaquin Phoenix as Julien.

Eli Manning leave a dong imprint on Carolina helmets tonight
September 20th, 2012 at 9:19 PM
What’s the OU on CLE-BUF. I don’t bet NFL but I do a bet with a friend on the Browns each week vs the spread. Last year I was 10-3-1 and this year 0-1-1. I know its CLE +3 but dont know the OU
September 20th, 2012 at 9:21 PM
I couldn’t watch BYU-Boise thanks to the blue-on-blue color scheme, so I’m suffering through this debacle instead.
The Panthers are getting debacled.

September 20th, 2012 at 9:22 PM
This Giants team looks determined so far. Carolina seems shell-shocked.
September 20th, 2012 at 9:23 PM
I could see it, polite and timid on the outside calculating and emotional wreck on the inside.
Cam is going to put up huge numbers this game down 17 points this early.
September 20th, 2012 at 9:24 PM
I run nos. on a spreadsheet and then factor in a Power Rating for each team. I got a score of DET 36 TEN 21
How do you go about doing all that? Not going to lie, I just usually go with gut instinct, which although it doesn’t let me down too bad, it’s definitely not flawless. Need to improve my picking methods.
September 20th, 2012 at 9:27 PM
One of the BYU-Boise announcers referred to Kellen Moore as “legendary.”
I guess when you’re the first lesbian to start at QB for a college football team, that makes you a legend.
September 20th, 2012 at 9:28 PM
The refs have been amazingly invisible in this game. Could the scabs be getting their act together?

/DOES ANYBODY GOT A DIME?!

I guess when you’re the first lesbian to start at QB for a college football team, that makes you a legend.
Jared Lorenzen would like a word.
September 20th, 2012 at 9:31 PM
I just checked ESPN and saw 17-0. Figured this would’ve been a close game. Panthers better step it up here soon.

O/U is 43.5
September 20th, 2012 at 9:35 PM
Not believing the Cam hype, and refusing to change picks for injured players (Vegas already factored that in, and the whole ‘next man up thing’) is serving me well. I just couldn’t see the SB champs being underdogs on a neutral field against the Panthers. No way. So far…
September 20th, 2012 at 9:35 PM
A shot of Cam on the sideline – lookin’ some kinda frustrated.
September 20th, 2012 at 9:35 PM
Even Rock Ridge hated Notre Dame.
Was that was the Irish reference was for?
September 20th, 2012 at 9:35 PM
Yeah, thinking I should have taken the GMen in my Eliminator pool at work. Still gotta come up someone this week.
September 20th, 2012 at 9:35 PM
Let’s wait until the 3rd quarter, and then we’ll break out “what a fraud.”
September 20th, 2012 at 9:35 PM
The CLE-BUF OU is 43.5 I do think that clock is going to run a lot faster with Spiller and Trent Rich out there. Also, it is got a good chance of raining all game. If it stays dry I would take consider that over though. Shelden Brown is coming back and that should keep the CLE #5 DB off the field for 40 plays.

A run a system of pts/play and compare them vs one another, plus factor in the home field adv and PR. I guess I just need something tangible when I bet on football and this system just gives me a baseline to go from. Usually around 55-60% with picks. Now if I go with my gut, than I’m even worse.
September 20th, 2012 at 9:39 PM
Browns at Ravens next Thursday? Uh-oh.
With apologies to spencer, I don’t know about this. Hope Weeden gets off to a good start.
September 20th, 2012 at 9:40 PM
It’s a line from the movie. When Barts shows up with his coworkers from the railroad to help build the fake Rock Ridge, they ask for a place in the community in return.
David Huddleston (the Big Lebowski himself) then gives the classic reply:
“All right… we’ll give some land to the n—–s and the c—-s. But we don’t want the Irish!”
September 20th, 2012 at 9:42 PM
I know the quote, Nada. I just wasn’t sure what it was actually for. If it had something to do with Notre Dame or if there was some deep seeded hate for the Irish back then I never knew about.
September 20th, 2012 at 9:43 PM
That Irish quote and the Gucci references were two things I never understood about that movie.

September 20th, 2012 at 9:46 PM
This is pathetic. Cam doesn’t look like an nfl qb, terrible accuracy.
September 20th, 2012 at 9:46 PM
ESPN Radio had a poll on which QB would you rather start your franchise around between Eli and Newton. The only thing dumber than the question was Coachman’s reasoning for choosing Newton.

OT: Nats up 4-1, top of 9th. Good news – Storen is closing, instead of Clippard. Bad news – Kemp’s at bat.
Washington win clinches at least a wild card slot.
And, Kemp is called out on strikes.

Irvin and Deion needntomgo in the parking lot and play tummy sticks.
September 20th, 2012 at 9:59 PM
Watch Scam Newton throw for a bunch of meaningless yards in the 2nd half, and people will say “Well it wasnt Cam’s fault they lost.” That’s kinda been his MO since entering the league. He hasnt really been on TV so people have looked at his box scores.
The Giants are champions, the Panthers are pretenders. Betting Eli on the road is easy money.
September 20th, 2012 at 9:59 PM
Another stat I like: Geno Smith has as many TDs as he does incompletions this season.
RGIII had a similar stat at one point last season.

That might be the difference – how many national TV games have the Giants’ players played as opposed to the Panthers? Cam Newton hasnt been on primetime since Auburn.
September 20th, 2012 at 10:04 PM
Storen strikes out the side. Nats in the post-season for the first time since ’81. As long as they don’t have to face Rick Monday, I like their chances.
OBTW, the bandwagon is filling up big-time. Lots of previously unused seats were filled tonight.
This weekend against the Brewers is gonna be some kinda party. And, Dierks Bentley is playing there post-game Saturday night. “5-1-5-0, somebody call the po-po”.

September 20th, 2012 at 10:06 PM
Most teams go with a 3-man rotation. Zimmermann, Gio, Jackson/Detwiler is a competitive rotation in a short series. Their defense has been pretty steady all season.
I expect them to be similar to the ’10 Giants, although they probably won’t win the World Series. Lotsa close games, decided late.
September 20th, 2012 at 10:07 PM
I’ve been all jazzed up about my play of Andre Brown, sadly, I forgot I also started Cam Newton.

Batavia has Pontillo’s which is pretty good. Buffalo has so many great pizza/wing joints I can’t even count. For real “Buffalo-style” pizza my favorites were Bocce Club and Milano’s. Santora’s was also really good. Wings – Duff’s is my favorite but any pizza place in Buffalo worth its salt can make good wings.

Also, know the difference between the southern states and The South – mostly how Texas has this identity complex that they think is obvious but everybody else gives two wanks about. Lastly, have some history in the various bbq styles. Generally conced that yes, that microbrew does have some appeal. Yes, that whiskey has some unique character. You’re golden.
September 20th, 2012 at 10:32 PM
Pontillos isnt open in batavia anymore. Family dispute, lawsuits, behind payments..they closed…one of the family opened another place in same building with different name. For a “city” of 16,000 people, it has 4 or 5 good pizza joints and a bunch of good sub shops.

To answer scripty’s criteria:
- Android/Apple – no smart phone, tablet, etc. Only own iPod. Own a flip phone (no voice mail). Text a lot. Returns calls most of the time.
- southern states vs “The South” – grew up in Tennessee. Glad I wasn’t born a slave. Texans have a healthy respect for their unique place in American history. They may have a southern latitude, but they aren’t “the South”.
- barbecue – pulled pork w/cole slaw on a hot day is gooooooood. Ice cold sweet tea, and I’m set.
- microbrews – don’t know much about ‘em. Bunch of ‘em in Denver, though. Research field is only one hour north of me.
- whiskey – never had it. Not savvy enough to discuss it.

Trivia: Waylon was supposed to be on the plane that Buddy Holly chartered to avoid riding their freezing winter tour bus, but he gave up his seat to the Big Bopper, who had the flu.
Buddy teased him, “I hope your ol’ bus freezes up,” to which Waylon replied, “Well, I hope your ol’ plane crashes.”
