Steve Sabol Has Passed Away: RIP Steve
Steve Sabol, an icon in the coverage of the NFL along with his father Ed, has passed away from a brain tumor, per NFL Network’s Rich Eisen. If you grew up watching football, you know the impact that Steve Sabol had on the game. He was a great guy, and a great ambassador for the game. In an era before twitter, the internet, and constant information, those NFL Films profiles, from the team videos to the Super Bowls to the Bloopers, were a constant companion.
Rest in peace, Steve.
Here are some Sabol interviews and NFL Films things:

I knew he was ill but this is the worst. NFL Films is fantastic and it’s mainly because of the Sabols.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:28 PM
Well said, Mr. Lisk. Some of us older guys grew up on NFL Films stuff.

ill never forget watching those cheesy 80′s and early 90′s NFL highlight videos that prominently featured steve sabol. he played a huge part into getting me to love football and his work was as stellar as it got.
big loss. big, big loss.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:28 PM
Someone needs to do a memorial video and get James Earl Jones or someone of that ilk to voice it.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
All of this, if the NFL Network shows it again the A Football Life about Ed Sabol and the birth of NFL Films is really good…Steve was with him every step of the way
September 18th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
LOL at AJ Hawk: “If you tackle, we’re good.”
Should have followed his own advice last year.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
The season review marathons that ESPN used to run leading up to the holidays were a staple of my childhood.
RIP Steve and RIP when ESPN showed sports during the day.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:32 PM
In high school during first semester finals week we’d be getting home around noon and it was the time of year where ESPN2 would always be showing the Super Bowl highlights hosted by him…just great stuff

I still get an erection every time I see that 3rd down pass to Jennings.

Definitely a comment worthy of the double post.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
The Autumn Wind is a pirate.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
i loved the season previews they’d run…you dont know how good of a product they put out until you’re legitimately excited about the 2008 chiefs’ prospects after nfl films turned their 4-12 2007 campaign into an accomplishment on par with the marines taking iwo jima.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
We see the NFL the way we do today because of Steve and Ed Sabol.
I’ve met guys who work at NFL Films (it’s based in South Jersey) and they’ve always said the Sabols were awesome people.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
In the 80′s and 90′s, they’d show the 30-minute Super Bowl recap shows the day of the Super Bowl. They’d start at like 10am and run til about 1 hour before the SuperBowl. You could just sit and watch them all in a row.
NFL films had a lot of accmomplished off-screen talent. Guys who understood production with nuance. Cameramen who knew how to get a great shot that you didn’t see on TV. I have to imagine finding that talent started with the Sabols.

Fuck you, cancer.

Amazing in how accurate this is…with just a few breaks and some youngsters rounding into form the Lions are ready to Restore the Roar in [fill in any year here]

The idea of editing footage of last night’s game would have killed the healthiest of men. RIP
September 18th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
getting the framing on those long passes spiraling perfectly through the air must be one of the most difficult shots in the industry.

RIP Steve.

These programs sustained my Raider fandom every offseason when I was a kid. I don’t know whether to thank him or not.
Instead, thanks for the bloopers.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
fuckin’ nailed it.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
I have a family member who works for Films. They swear by Steve.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
My fear with Steve gone is that in an effort to save a few bucks, Goodell and the owners are going to decimate NFL Films and it will a shell of its former glory.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
likewise. i mean, shit, weren’t they on the block a few years ago?
September 18th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
I probably watched the “Fantastic Finishes” NFL VHS between 250-300 times growing up. Seemed like a good dude.
Also, when do we get the uncensored “Best of” NFL tape? That would be incredible.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:41 PM

Oh no. You might be right.

“BLACK 59 RAZOR! BLACK 59 RAZOR!”
Brett Favre tells a story about the day of Super Bowl XXXI he’s hanging out at the hotel when the marathon is running and he watches that one and remembered that bit after calling nearly the exact same audible on the second play of the game leading to a TD…I just liked that players enjoyed the NFL Films work as well
September 18th, 2012 at 1:42 PM
Legend. RIP.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
The NFL will be bringing in the guys who made The Innocence of Muslims to run the department and then go out of their way to tell us how good the product still is
September 18th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
He was just a propaganda mouthpiece for a billion dollar dementia machine.
Other than that, someone to root for.

Coop’s google alert for Peter North cumpilations is blowing the fuck up right now.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
I read a newspaper piece on this a while back (wish I could remember where). It will be a sad day when the NFL Borg assimilates NFL Films.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
“What the hell’s goin’ on out there?”
“Keep it up. Keep it up.”
I always say these two things just like Vince and Marty because of NFL Films.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
Man, I wish he could be eulogized in John Facenda’s voice.
/RIP Steve.

FACENDA: Saint Louis wore their Cardinal red at home, but Neil Lomax knew today they’d….
SHOT of Neil Lomax fakes left and pivots, throwing a bomb downt the right sightline. The ball spirals, laces turning over faster and faster into the outstretched hands…
Facenda: …to find Green
into the hands of Roy Green. Neil Lomax and his geriatric hip limp off field.

Already mentioned but this collection of the NFL Films Music is a definite purchase*.

New Orleans Saints Highlights….
Great stuff from Steve.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:50 PM
The owners told them to put John Phiilip Sousa music in the background. NFL films got their own music.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:51 PM
“A New Game” was compulsory listening on my headphones before any Thanksgiving day flag football competition.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:51 PM
Some cool old footage of Sabol working with John Facenda.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:51 PM
I listen to Autumn Thunder a lot when I’m playing Counter Strike or Day of Defeat, it’s good background for murder.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
Man, I wish he could be eulogized in John Facenda’s voice.
If they can hologram Tupac they should be able to do this.
/ITCHY: Hi, Poochie. You look like you’ve got something to say. Do you?
POOCHIE :Yes, I certainly do! (Poochie’s mouth stops moving and Meyers’ voice is heard) I have to go now. My planet needs me.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
spot on.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
I was just listening to it and it makes me want to punch my boss.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
Yet another great that cancer took too soon. RIP
September 18th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
we all re-enacted some highlights in slow motion, pointing and yelling. i am an only child, so i played football alot by myself, throwing myself passes, using the couch as a tackler for me to vault over. all while humming those glorious tunes.
his eulogy should be a bunch of folks sharing memories like that
September 18th, 2012 at 1:55 PM
RIP, indeed. Loved his work, and his enthusiasm for the work. He was one of the best.
September 18th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
Jesus christ, can we fucking get rid of cancer already?

Whenever I see that clip, I wanna laugh and cry. It’s so corny, but in context it works big-time.
“Where else would you rather be, than right here, right now?” With no shame, I still use this from time to time.

Awful, awful news…RIP.
September 18th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
I used to sit and watch those every Super Bowl Sunday.
Sad, Awful news. The pictures, the audio, mics on the coaches and players, the narration, the music. Sabol made NFL Films legendary.
September 18th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
Jesus Jones! Now there was a band.
September 18th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
I’d definitely want to take a tour of the NFL Films facility. It’s about an hour from where I live.
September 18th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
Man I stopped smoking for 4 years after my wife got pregnant with our daughter. Work stress got me this year and I’m back on the fucking camels. I hate myself everytime I light up.

Still remember the one line from one of the 70′s Steeler Super Bowl teams highlight specials…
“Great teams aren’t always great, they’re just great when they have to be.”
RIP Steve, absolute f’ing legend and game changer.
Of this you can be 100% sure.
September 18th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
My fear with Steve gone is that in an effort to save a few bucks, Goodell and the owners are going to decimate NFL Films and it will a shell of its former glory.
I seem to recall a story a few years back that this was already occuring. The NFL had significantly cut budget to NFL films and shifted it over to NFL Network when it first went live. If I remember correctly, bunch of people lost jobs, and if not for fans/media making a lot of noise, the cuts would have been almost fatal.
September 18th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
Jesus christ, can we fucking get rid of cancer already?
no shit. it infuriates me to no end that this is still around. my number one pet peeve on earf.
