White Sox open up a three-game lead on the Tigers with 16 games left.
Tigers fans can only hope that Jimmy gets fired after this season. No excuse for the amount of talent they have, to not run away with this division.

It is not Leyland’s fault the Tigers can’t play defense. The Rangers infield makes their pitchers seem better than they are.

The trainer chick checking out Ellington… awesome. Still chuckling.

Romney is just clueless. That SNL cold open with him saying completely oblivious things to the town hall crowd could have been documentary footage. If Obama had been videotaped talking to a black neighborhood watch group saying that rich white people want to take your homes and keep you in poverty to further their own wealth, the election wouldn’t even happen. But no one seems to care about this.
Also, why do the Olympics and World Cup struggle so much with mascots. Is it really that hard?
September 18th, 2012 at 8:18 AM
No doubt. Looked like a movie scene.
The guy bitching about technology kind of has a point. But I keep going back to the old Louis CK bit about us screaming because a phone takes half a second to download a map from space. ITS COMING FROM SPACE!!!!

what do you have against armadillos? They exist, they’re innocuous, and from what I understand, they are prevalent in Brazil. And if somebody brings a live one to a game, it’s not going to rampage and kill a bunch of people, nor will it upset animal rights groups.

That doesn’t really tell the story. I assure you a team with Cabrera and Fielder at the corners and has regularly played Delmon Young in the OF is not good defensively, no matter how good Austin Jackson might be.

OK…don’t want to sidetrack things by talking about politics, but in reading the Romney thing I clicked on some links and found that while 46 pct. of people don’t pay income tax, 28 pct pay payroll tax and not income tax. What the hell is payroll tax? Is that just the social security, etc. type deductions they take from your check?
I’m slightly right of center but am still undecided on the presidential election.
September 18th, 2012 at 8:38 AM
Well they are near the bottom in assists, but so are the Meth Sox, Rangers, and Yankees and it sure looks like the three of them are going to be in the post season.

September 18th, 2012 at 8:41 AM
Yeah. The number is actually 46 percent (huge difference, I know) and it refers to federal income tax. The Poorz still pay sales taxes, payroll taxes, local taxes, etc. There’s still a burden there.
The idea that GE and thousands of other wealthy corporations and individuals (including Willard himself, most likely, hence not releasing his returns) also paid no federal income tax in 2011 is something not discussed enough.
September 18th, 2012 at 8:41 AM
Another day another QueeferSutherland Romney rant. Joy.
Two comments. First, I love Fox News and even I can’t watch Fox and Friends. Just awful. I feel like my IQ lessens every time I watch. And second, what Romney was trying to say, I think, was that 47% of the country won’t vote for him no matter what. This is not news. He then started doing some generalizing that wasn’t factually accurate. He should have said it includes the takers, but also 25 different special interest groups.
September 18th, 2012 at 8:41 AM
Measuring a team’s defense with any number – errors, fielding percentage, assists, UZR – has problems.
Rangers have an elite SS/3B combo and a decent OF. De Aza and Ramirez are both above average defenders for the Sox at the most important positions. The Yankees… have Granderson.
September 18th, 2012 at 8:42 AM
LOL, yeah, I’m definitely guilty of employing that phrase from time to time.

What are they? FICA (medicare, SS)?
September 18th, 2012 at 8:45 AM
Can’t let that one go. No, that’s not what he said. He said 47 percent of Americans were dependent on government and that’s why they’d vote for Obama. It was not a poor analogy in search of a better point. He was attempting to rile up a room full of people who believe that poor people are lazy leeches of society. Mittens isn’t a stupid guy. If he wanted to say that half the country (and more, frankly), won’t vote for him, he would have said that without the class warfare overtones.
Again, if Obama says the opposite to a room full of black community organizers, Fox News collectively has a stroke.
September 18th, 2012 at 8:45 AM
Romney is his own worst enemy. I’ve never witnessed such an inept presidential campaign. Will the real GOP please stand up?
September 18th, 2012 at 8:46 AM
But if your one of 47% who will vote GOP you are a fucking retard who rewards the politics of economic obstructionism and supporting the ideals that destroyed the economy in the first place.

Interesting read on payroll taxes, presented without comment or bias
September 18th, 2012 at 8:49 AM
From the NY Times:
But the most striking part of the video is Mr. Romney’s characterization of nearly half of the country. His assessment of the “47 percent” echoes a line of conservative thinking that is championed by his running mate, Representative Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin. Mr. Ryan has long argued that nearly half of the people in America are either “dependent” or “reliant” on the federal government.
Mr. Romney’s figure of 47 percent comes from the Tax Policy Center, which found that 46.4 percent of households paid no federal income tax in 2011.
But most households did pay payroll taxes. Of the 18.1 percent of households that paid neither income taxes nor payroll taxes, the center found that more than half were elderly and more than a third were not elderly but had income under $20,000. Roberton Williams, a senior fellow at the center, wrote in a blog post last summer that about half of those were off the rolls because they had low incomes.
Referring to this, from The Tax Policy Center.
September 18th, 2012 at 8:50 AM
Queefer you can have all kinds of faux outrage. According to Obama I am a bitter clinger and I didn’t build that. The way Romney said it was not even factually accurate and the one thing you are correct about is that he isn’t stupid. But he isn’t the most eloquent politician so he goofed up the point. In the end the people that wouldn’t vote for Romney anyway are really mad. But it has no tangible effect on the election other than distracting from real news like a screwed up economy, the middle east on fire, China and Japan preparing to square off, and Obama’s golf handicap.

And second, what Romney was trying to say, I think, was that 47% of the country won’t vote for him no matter what. This is not news
it is a totally false argument. most people who don’t pay income tax live in states that will go heavily to Romney.

If you don’t think Romney’s general assholeness is affecting the election, you might want to check out the polls. In fact, a lot of the people that he insulted as lazy government leeches are red-state conservatives and the elderly, two traditional GOP voting blocs.
He made a calculated, base-bait statement that was neither true nor befitting someone who wants to be president. It’s just another example of how unfit he is to sit in the chair.

I know you hope that this is true. But the fact is most people don’t see themselves the way Romney was describing, which is his saving grace. No, the GOP block loathes Obama-Pelosi-Reid and will vote just to keep them out of power. Of this I am sure.
September 18th, 2012 at 8:58 AM
It’s incredible to me that there are still people out there not sure who they are going to vote for. That’s not an indictment on either candidate or the person unsure about their choice. Well, I’m one of them. I like a lot of the things Obama has done but have a deep-rooted belief in some of the traditional Republican talking points, mainly, that government aid/handouts become a disincentive/crutch for many people. My “side job” is as a property owner. My other half and I own a dozen or so houses that we rent out to lower income people. You would be amazed at how many people we come across who have been on Section 8 housing for literally a decade or more and have told us that they do their best to avoid losing their Section 8 vouchers. So, while many Democratic principles appeal to me, and things like Obama shrinking the federal government workforce and some of his foreign policy results are feathers in his cap for me, the “47 percent pay no income tax” type of talk DOES make me want to vote Republican. I know it may make me an outcast around here, but that’s just my thinking.
Incidentally, I voted for Obama last election and may well do so again. It’s not black and white for me. I don’t vote strictly based on gay issues or economic ones.
September 18th, 2012 at 9:11 AM

Funniest thing about the Romney comments, fallout, etc is that the net outcome of it is unlikely to move polls one way or another. I mean, if you are truly a “moocher,” you don’t really consider yourself one, do you? Those people would be like “oh he’s not talking about me! i hate moochers too!”
I think the bigger picture is what is troublesome for the Republican side. He’s on a streak of negative pub now. That can be looked at one of two ways, either it was bound to happen and at least he’s getting it out of his system before the debates/crunch time OR he’s a mistake prone candidate that won’t be able to get over the hump.
Call me in October.
September 18th, 2012 at 9:19 AM
I haven’t seen it, but will check it out online. The critics I respect aren’t too fond of the show. Said the main characters aren’t that good and the storylines are watered down. But that seems to be the main problem with most network dramas nowadays. Terra Nova could’ve been really good. But they kept diluting the stories in order to get the most amount of viewers. In the end, it satisfied no one.
September 18th, 2012 at 9:19 AM

September 18th, 2012 at 9:33 AM
i think it’s interesting that the claim 47% of american’s don’t pay taxes still is talked about more and overshadowing the fact that the GOP nominee for president resides int he top 1% of the country in income yet likely falls into that 47% of individuals who didn’t pay any income tax.
September 18th, 2012 at 9:34 AM
“You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
Can someone honestly explain the difference between Romney’s (admittedly “inartful”) statement, and the one above?
Besides of course the fact that Romney’s is based at least somewhat on factual evidence.

September 18th, 2012 at 9:39 AM
He’s not “saying” it — he’s citing a proven fact, vis a vis federal income tax.
Is it really breaking news that the Democratic party loves their government assistance programs, actually believes that our bankrupt and inefficient government should be doing more, and has a base (I think they were protesting yesterday outside my office) that generally dislikes anything the private sector stands for?

He came from a wealthy house and spent his days loafing around so him being fat to begin with makes sense…maybe beyond The Wall they found tubs of ranch dressing like Hurley did thus keeping him fat
September 18th, 2012 at 9:41 AM
i have lived in these small towns, not in PA, and it’s true that’s how people are. go check out the old mill towns in some parts of MA and the rest of NE.
47% of american’s probably net zero taxes at the end of the year, due to deductions that help them actually make ends meet. they aren’t avoiding taxes by putting them in offshore accounts or working cash only jobs, stuffing money in their mattress.

This bothered me a lot in A Game of Thrones. There is no way you can be as fat as Sam in that environment
He came from a wealthy house and spent his days loafing around so him being fat to begin with makes sense…maybe beyond The Wall they found tubs of ranch dressing like Hurley did thus keeping him fat
yeah, he was the heir to some Lordship, but his dad hated him for being a huge fat pussy. So his dad told him he could either take the black or go on a hunting trip and accidentally get killed, once they had a new baby boy.
September 18th, 2012 at 9:44 AM
In small towns in Central PA, Martin Luther King Day is not observed by local government, but the first day of hunting season is.

Mike, of the 47% (it is an accurate number, but somewhat misleading), Obama holds an ~57-43% lead. So 43% of the 47% support Romney, which is 20% overall. Does Mitt really want the support of these freeloaders?

sounds like somebody needs a big soda

From a “political blunder” perspective, the difference is that one happened within the current news cycle and the other happened five years ago. If the timing was reversed, I’m sure all the talk today would be about Obama’s blunder. I recall that it stirred up quite a bit of talk at the time.
September 18th, 2012 at 9:54 AM
One is being a condescending asshat, the other isnt.
September 18th, 2012 at 9:56 AM
Romney was overstating the numbers but – in truth, the old adage is ever true: He who robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul. The significant “dependent” class and those who are employed to manage (i.e. bureaucrats) serve and care for them, will always vote for the party which will increase that portion of the gumment budget.
Romney is doomed by a propensity to speak too frankly (inelegantly) whilst surrounded by an actively antipathetic press corps.
September 18th, 2012 at 9:56 AM
Red states are less ubarnized, there are less jobs and red states require more social assistance. He is calling his own base moochers. Not sure why but I feel like him being historically a centre right politician and pandering to the far right base has left him unable to separate fact from rhetoric. He simply can’t say what he means, for instance this. Not a typical republican statement.
September 18th, 2012 at 9:57 AM
Hate to break in on the truly entertaining political discussion, but the Wally Hilgenberg article is really interesting. I know there have been discussions on allowing kids to play football, and this once again presents some thought provoking comments.
September 18th, 2012 at 9:57 AM
Can someone honestly explain the difference between Romney’s (admittedly “inartful”) statement, and the one above?
The difference is that Obama was saying “I understand why people feel the way they do. they feel like government has failed them”. Romney was saying “half the people won’t vote for me because they think they’re entitled to free stuff and you have to pay for it”
September 18th, 2012 at 10:03 AM
Yeah Alaska is getting the most federal money thrown at them for generations and that’s why they always vote commie pinko.
Rich people voting for tax cuts though, that’s cool, poor people* voting for more government assistance is wrong.
September 18th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
Wish the Stewart O’Reilly debate would be televised.
September 18th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
Okay, that makes sense. I thought he was a commoner and there is no way that you could be that fat with all of the firewood chopping/splitting that would take place in the North on a daily basis.
September 18th, 2012 at 10:07 AM
Yes. Both the substance and the tone of those two statements are completely different, though not surprising to see the compared.
September 18th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
47% not paying taxes?
Who do these people think they are, the Fortune 1000?
September 18th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
Let me be more clear. What he means is they are freeloaders. That they are getting things they don’t deserve. That grandma relying on her social security check as her only income is a leach, that she is an Obama supporter because of it.
It’s awful and he’s awful and good riddance.
September 18th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
Romney’s was a lie and Obama’s was true?
September 18th, 2012 at 10:13 AM
Romney insults a quarter of the people who vote for him. They not only don’t care but completely gloss over the fact that he and his corporate brethren also pay no federal income tax.
The only way this week could get worse for Romney is if he tax returns leak showing what we all know: that he didn’t pay any taxes for a long, long time.
September 18th, 2012 at 10:14 AM
Obama said something that could alienate people who generally would never vote for him, Romney said something that will alienate people who would vote for him.
All in all it’s good times.

The most outrageous statement in Romney’s rant was his “I inherited nothing” knee-slapper.
Reminds me of what Molly Ivins said of W.: He was born on third base but thinks he hit a triple.

The scriptwriters on this show appear to be Walking Dead castoffs.
September 18th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
Obama called his opposing voting bloc bitter racist xenophobes who “cling” to the 2nd amendment (gasp!) and religion (gasp!)to “explain their frustrations” with their government.
That’s cool, though.
September 18th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
I heard him use that word.. I think he perhaps meant to say ‘inelequently’? Irony.
September 18th, 2012 at 10:28 AM

Speaking of the upcoming election
Randy Newman writes new satirical, political song
Newman said he’s proud of how America has progressed, though, but adds that “there’s a long way to go.”
“No European country would have elected a black man,” he said. “I can’t believe it happened. I think it’s fantastic, like a step on the moon.”
Doesn’t the fact that America elected an African America proof that America has “come a long way”. On another note, does that make Europeans racist?
September 18th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
No, but them throwing bananas at black soccer players does
September 18th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
Completely wrong in so many ways.
At least O’s comments were made in public and not some private, exclusive dinner where R thought they wouldn’t get out, and he could “keep it real”
September 18th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
Was that the Poles during EURO 2012?
September 18th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
The point I take from all this is that neither of these buffoons is worth voting for.
September 18th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
Lol. Talk about “completely wrong in so many ways.”
Hard to have a discussion when you can’t get even the basic facts surrounding the comments right.

September 18th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
And people say he hasn’t had a positive effect on the economy
My favorite part of all this is that Mitt was ragging more on his own voting base since if people who don’t pay tax vote Democrat the party would never lose in the deep south…there are a lot of people who dislike government assistance in theory but still cash those checks and have done so for a long long time
September 18th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
Ha. 47% of the public are freeloaders according to Mittens, but mentioning the fact that many of these people who don’t pay (only) the Federal Income Tax are elderly… makes his critics clueless? Alright.
September 18th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
All the outdoor shops in Central PA were actually sold out of many types of bullets between November and January. Had nothing to do with hunting season, either. A lot of the bigger stores reported record gun sales.
September 18th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
Ross Perot’s “sucking sound” quote should be changed to fit modern times… it’s your tax dollars going to those Republican supporting southern states.

I don’t quite understand this. Are you embellishing the moment or are you actually undecided, meaning you really don’t have a clue about who you’re going to vote for? Really? If so, how much more are you really expecting to learn in the next month and change?

September 18th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
I was wrong on the O speaking at a fundraiser part but, I do think that.
Obama was trying to engage the people who he said wont vote for him. The “bitter clingers”.
Romney is basically saying F.U. to the 47% who he claims all vote for Obama and are freeloading victims.
