The Michael Lewis link is busted. Has a TBL domain.

don’t know too much about her, assumed she was related to those twin trolls, googled her and I was right. Looks like the ugly gene skipped her, unlike those 2 before her.

Tom Hanks is just the man. I remember last year he flew out to PA for Dink Winters’ funeral. Didn’t tell anyone, didn’t bring any cameras, just came out here to pay his respects. Awesome guy.

I read the Lewis piece and enjoyed it. Is that all he’s writing after six months of hanging around with the president? Seems like he should have gotten enough material for a book and not just a Vanity Fair piece.
September 17th, 2012 at 8:26 AM
Poor coaching, stupid penalties, terrible tackling and a hillbilly QB. Nice game fat ass.

Pryor time. Running some option with Pryor and McFadden would be awesome.

It’s Michael Lewis. He can do whatever he wants, expense a 6 month vacation, write a small piece, and then hang around doing nothing for a year.

September 17th, 2012 at 8:40 AM
McFadden’s long run was 4 yards yesterday. The rash of turnovers against the Texans disguised the fact that Dolphins d looked pretty good for the most part in week one. They’ve got to be allowing like 2 ypc so far.

Got hammered with singing Ukrainians, one song was about each month and when they sing your birth month you stand up and chug. Very next song was about a mother telling her last son of 5 that he too will die in the war outlining the circumstances his brothers, father and grandfathers dying for Ukraine. Changed the mood quickly, what a beleaguered hard drinking people.
September 17th, 2012 at 8:46 AM
I imagine this is pretty closely based on age and marital/parental status. A few years ago sure, but this weekend I worked both days, and spent the mornings with the chain saw and evenings splitting firewood. If it’s not the Patriots or Pitt, I’m not watching a whole football game.
September 17th, 2012 at 8:47 AM
An incredible takedown of Scott Pioli after the Chiefs fell to 0-2.
The man gave Romeo Crennel a 2nd chance to head coach. Was a takedown even necessary?
September 17th, 2012 at 8:47 AM
that Giants comeback was ugly, huh?
September 17th, 2012 at 8:47 AM
Maybe next year half of the TBL suicide pool will still be around for week 3. Patriots knocked out 44% of the field, although they’re no 2011 Cleveland Browns.

Pats with big spread in early weeks is always bad news. I have never been so sure of a Pats win as week 1, or of a close win/bad loss as week 2. That and that Chris Johnson was toast and a waste in any 1st round of a fantasy draft.
September 17th, 2012 at 8:49 AM
Anybody have a reccomendation on fireproof gloves? I have one pair from my father who was a retired firefighter but I was looking to get a 2nd pair. These would mainly be used for a home fireplace. Price is a consideration.

Still more cheerful than that Fiona Apple stuff you’ve been linking to lately.

I know someone from the last decade I met thru thru my brother-in-law and he’s traveled with these groups of WWII veterans that have gone back to Europe on tours and he’s also attended dinners honoring some of them, he even met Dick Winters a few yrs back. He’s shared some photos from this stuff, really cool.
September 17th, 2012 at 8:54 AM
Sounds like me. Only NFL I watch is Bears. I watch more college but not near as much as I used to.

“We have a good team. We have no QB. The lazy media who has nothing better to do than to call for people’s jobs and write articles about the “hot seat” will be out in full force throughout the rest of the year, but as somebody who actually gives money to Kansas City, I can say I, for one, don’t give a crap what you people think. Matt Cassel is not very good. If we had a healthy backup or one that was given enough snaps in practice to amount to anything, Cassel would never again be a starter, and we’d be 2-0 at the very least right now.”
/That quote above is Ritty on Auburn, I changed about 6 words
//The defense of shitty teams all sound the same
September 17th, 2012 at 8:55 AM
AFter two weeks of NFL 2012, the big question: will Barkley be packing his bags for Kansas City or Oakland in 2013? (Buffalo will probably screw itself by winning just enough to miss out on the Shat for Matt sweepstakes.)
September 17th, 2012 at 8:55 AM
Mike Francesa’s head was down, eyes were closed and brain was shut down off from the rest of humanity, but in no way was he sleeping — let’s set the record straight. Never.
September 17th, 2012 at 8:55 AM
I said how I don’t really care for NCAA-F because of conference realignment and corruption etc and he ripped me apart saying it’s not that I don’t care for it, it’s just that I’m getting older and have more things to do and have to make choices on how to spend time. It was a fun argument, and I just wanted to preserve his memory.
He’s a low-volume, high-quality writer with the freedom to take as long as he needs to compile a story. He has the credibility and track record to do so. I thought that was obvious?
September 17th, 2012 at 8:57 AM
The two games I felt most sure of were Wk 1: Patriots and Wk 2: Houston/SF. Since so many people try to get cute and save good teams (Cleveland last year), I wonder if a better strategy is just to pick the sure things early on, and worry about who you saved later.
September 17th, 2012 at 8:59 AM
Here’s a non-defense for the Aints: karma, it’s a muthafucka.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:00 AM
That’s a pretty good quote. Makes you realize how tough the job really is.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:00 AM
Maybe next year half of the TBL suicide pool will still be around for week 3. Patriots knocked out 44% of the field, although they’re no 2011 Cleveland Browns.
So glad I picked Houston. I think that I even had the Patriots picked for a majority of the week.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:00 AM
Does anyone think the NFL front office is gonna get on Schiano’s case for sending his defense after Eli on the kneel-down?
September 17th, 2012 at 9:01 AM
I’m pretty sure the people who picked the Pats thought they were picking a sure thing. Thank God I went with the ‘sure thing’ of the Giants instead.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:01 AM
In case anyone missed it, he pinch hit for Iglesias (whom they are evaluating as the SS of the future) in the middle of an at bat (with a 2-2 count). For Nava, who was cold, and didn’t have the benefit of seeing the pitchers delivery/timing etc. He’s basically managing with both middle fingers at this point.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:02 AM
Forgot to get my pick in, in fact I didn’t bookmark the link. can anyone post it? I guess I’m out of the suicide pool now.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:02 AM
His survivor pool doesn’t force people to use new teams each week and they routinely end the same as league’s where you can only pick a team once.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:03 AM
Welder’s gloves. Less than $10. I sue them for my outdoor fireplace and grills. you get about 10-15 secondes before you start feeling the heat, more than enough time to lift and place a lit log.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:03 AM
Eh, see I didn’t see it with the Pats. Though if you’d have told me Larry would have been bottled up, I’d have gone im on them. They have a bad habit of letting crappy teams/qbs hang around. That said, I thought they’d eke out a win, am surprised by the loss.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:03 AM
I would hope not, just because you are done playing doesn’t mean the other team has to be. If it was more than 8 points I can see the point. But if the Bucs somehow cause a fumble on that play and tie or win, “Schiano’s a genius” is all you hear today.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:04 AM
He’s a fucking toolbag
September 17th, 2012 at 9:05 AM
The Cards aren’t crappy, that defense is legit…might be time to return to the days where when in doubt, take the NFC team in a matchup
September 17th, 2012 at 9:08 AM
Ok. I’d have loved to have seen your take before the game.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:11 AM
Is the NFC 6-1 against the AFC? (I counted quickly) Wow.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:11 AM
I picked Arizona to cover. Never wavered. I almost never pick Pats on high spreads. Still thought they’d probably win, but no way a blowout. Also picked the Raiders/Chiefs and liked both picks though, so it was probably a dumb fucking hunch.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:13 AM
He’s an unaware meathead (I know it’s redundant) as evidenced by his assertion that anyone who has seen his Rutgers teams play….. . No one has seen Rutgers play, you meathead.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:14 AM
When’s the offciating takedown coming?
Just finished the Lewis piece. That guy sure can strong words together. Great read.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:14 AM
Defense is 100% legit. Card’s offense however, is extremely crappy.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:14 AM
Impressive 2 year turnaround for the NFC West. Cards defense has quietly become prettaaayyy prettaayyy good. Peterson, Wilson, Dockett and Washington could all be Pro-Bowlers.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:15 AM
Does anyone think the NFL front office is gonna get on Schiano’s case for sending his defense after Eli on the kneel-down
/Buddy Ryan’d
September 17th, 2012 at 9:16 AM
Fitzgerald had 1 catch for 4 yards yesterday.
Or pick the home team. 13-2 yesterday.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:16 AM
Don’t forget Calais Campbell. He’s playing better than Dockett and is several years younger. Washington is a monster, I usually rock his jersey on Sundays.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:16 AM
Wasnt it a 14 point spread?
September 17th, 2012 at 9:17 AM
Seems to me the kneel-down falls under the same territory as the QB slide — that is, the offensive player is “giving himself up” and at that point becomes off-limits for the defense.
Also, if Schiano pulls that again, I think you’re gonna see open season on Bucs QBs if he ever calls for a kneel-down.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:17 AM
If Kolb somehow has a better record than Vick this year, I’d enjoy it.
I’m surprised by the number of Eagles fans on Facebook really excited about the team “special team, that just is able to win”. The only “special” I’ve seen for them is the kind that rides the short bus.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:18 AM
It was a west coast team starting Kevin Kolb traveling for a 1 PM game on the East Coast against who is supposed to be one of the top 3 teams in football. A completely reasonable survivor pick.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:18 AM
Jeff Fisher having the Rams looking competent this quickly amazes me since I was firmly in the camp that the adoration for that guy didn’t match the results…fun game with Washington when the players weren’t brawling (seems like there’s been more of this so far on the season, wonder if it’s tied in to the scabs not having a grip of the game)
September 17th, 2012 at 9:18 AM
I think the Cowboys are still not sure what hit them yesterday.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:18 AM
13.5 or 14 depending on where you looked.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:19 AM
I almost never pick Pats on high spreads.
In their 17-0 year I took the Pats to cover that 21.5 spread against the Dolphins. A memorable win.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:19 AM
I don’t even know who that guy is but he had 2 sacks yesterday. Nice
September 17th, 2012 at 9:20 AM

/flexes
September 17th, 2012 at 9:20 AM
Yeah. I’d have bit at 4.5 or lower. I think I wrote down 5, for the highest I’d take the Pats. I don’t have the sheet anymore. KC I had favored, so that was a gimme for me. 50% of the time I’m brilliant!
September 17th, 2012 at 9:20 AM
I was expecting a bench-clearing brawl to erupt at some point between the Lions and Niners last night, the refs seemingly weren’t doing anything to calm the jawing, late hitting and assorted ass-grabbing.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:21 AM
Russell Wilson sure looks like he knows what the hell he’s doing, him playing smart along with Marshawn Lynch definitely makes them frisky…already uneasy about the Packers’ trip out there next Monday
September 17th, 2012 at 9:21 AM
An incredible takedown of Scott Pioli after the Chiefs fell to 0-2.
Babb was just promoted to the second columnist spot (Mellinger is the other.) The Star thought they had their next Posnaski/Whitlock. Babb is gone in a couple weeks to the Washington Post. I’m surprised the Star is still letting him write.
And the Chiefs are horrible. Oh, my.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:21 AM
Cliff Avril wanted Calais Campbell money. So glad the Lions didn’t abide. Avril was useless last night. Can’t wait for some other stupid team to pay him 10M+ a season.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:22 AM
Agreed. I picked NE in all of my pickem leagues except when picking against the spread. I didn’t really think the Cardinals could win until they were up 11 in the 4th, and it still took a lucky FG miss to pull it out.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:23 AM
Just adorable when he caught that TD standing still and then started jumping up and down like the retarded kid in gym class who was allowed to do something good
September 17th, 2012 at 9:23 AM
I’m not a point where I can even discuss the Redskins yet.
/can’t take this any more
September 17th, 2012 at 9:23 AM
An Eagles fan told me yesterday that “winning close games is what great teams do.” Yes, turning the ball over nine times and needing an official’s error to win at home is the mark of a great organization.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:23 AM
Rams could be this year’s Niners. New coach of Fisher’s caliber can make a gigantic difference. Their defense definitely has some pieces like Long, Laurenitis and Finnegan. Bradford is clearly talented, Jackson’s injury may be a blessing in disguise and Amendola will be the biggest waiver wire pickup in fantasy since Arian Foster 2 years ago.

The Vikings clearly suck but I’m thankful they’ve been competitive so far. The Chiefs and Titans have both been godawful. Even the Browns showed more life this week
September 17th, 2012 at 9:27 AM
I must have missed this too. On the flip side, I loved hearing Merril Reese’s call of that incomplete pass by Vick that the refs called a fumble at first. “The ruling on the field is a fumble.”. Merrill: “The ruling on the field is WRONG.”
September 17th, 2012 at 9:28 AM
Once the officials deemed that the Vick play wasn’t a fumble are they not allowed to then rule it intentional grounding?

September 17th, 2012 at 9:29 AM
Bears fan at my work is still ranting about J’Marcus Webb. He follows him on Facebook, where he apparently posts nothing but pictures of himself eating huge amounts of fast food. Please keep this idiot as your left tackle, Mike Tice.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:29 AM
I believe it was Pereira who said that once you start your throwing motion and get hit by a defender mid throw, grounding can’t be called.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:30 AM
What happened to all those kids on defense?
I dont think NE was a bad pick to win, I just felt a lot more confident about Hou/SF.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:30 AM
That makes sense, thanks
September 17th, 2012 at 9:30 AM
Well said my friend
September 17th, 2012 at 9:31 AM
It’s like an intentional walk in baseball – you’ve still gotta go through the motions because every so often, the pitchers throws wild or the center-QB exchange is bobbled.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:31 AM
That was one major error. Third and goal from the 1 or fourth and goal from the 11 is a massive, game changing difference.
No, the one I was referring to was the game-winning Jones TD that would have put Baltimore up 10 with 4 minutes to play, effectively ending the game. It was called back due to offensive PI, PI that was not even close to being committed. It was a horrific call and it directly cost Baltimore the win. That happens to GB or the Patriots and the refs are back at work this morning.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:32 AM
Entire team is not bad, just that secondary. Woof. Need some sort of deep threat on offense too. Hopefully, Simpson will be that in two weeks.

September 17th, 2012 at 9:34 AM
Not really.
Re: Vick. The lack of any kind of awareness/desire to not take hits is just what he is. The Eagles will be lucky if he makes it through a season.
Really nice game from him yesterday, though – minus one extremely boneheaded throw on the opening drive.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:34 AM
Oh, I meant to thank the people that recommended the Thundershirt. Works really well with my dog, who gets really anxious even if I put my hat on.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:34 AM
I cannot believe the Saints are 0-2. Incredible how much Payton means to that team.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:34 AM
This. That funny-shaped ball sometimes bounces in a weird way. Miracle at the Meadowlands anyone? I know he has handing the ball off in that instance, but a bad exchange and who knows?
September 17th, 2012 at 9:34 AM
Does anyone think the overall poor officiating from the first two weeks gives leverage to the regular officials in their labor negotiations?
September 17th, 2012 at 9:36 AM
And the Chiefs are horrible. Oh, my.
What happened to all those kids on defense?
Romeo Crennel. There is talent on that team, but no fire or desire. I hate the Chiefs, but I have to watch them since they are usually the only NFL game on the tv when they play. I consider myself expert. No?
September 17th, 2012 at 9:36 AM
No because it’s not like fans are tuning out the games as a result…Goodell will win this and few will care that he let his product suffer
September 17th, 2012 at 9:36 AM
Did you guys see “Morganing” was a thing on Twitter last night?
September 17th, 2012 at 9:37 AM
Yeah, really. It’s not an opinion. There was no foul on the play. It was confirmed multiple times from multiple angles. That was a clean TD that won the Ravens the game. Incompetent officiating stole a victory. It’s not a conspiracy or bias. It’s just shitty officiating.
This isn’t baseball where 80 percent of the season doesn’t matter. You lose one game because of officiating and that could be the difference between playoffs or a long offseason, a bye or a first-round road game. Baltimore’s schedule is way too tough for them to have to beat good teams and the refs.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:37 AM
Not really. If teams like the Cowboys, Giants, Packers or Patriots get screwed over than probably yes.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:37 AM
Well, he’s only one of the 5-6 best coaches in football. And how far has Spagnuolo’s star fallen since slaying the best offense in NFL history 5 years ago? Yeesh.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:38 AM
Only if the players start complaining to their owners instead of the media.. enough Bob Krafts start going to the league office about it, and shit will get donw.

“There’s nothing worse than a hooker with cold hands.”

I cannot believe that Saints fans have the time to unpin themselves off of the cross long enough to “mourn” their lot in life.
Those whiny douchebags sure are convinced that the media is out to get them. How convenient it is that they’ve totally forgotten the year-long blowjob they received from national media for “overcoming” the hurricane and winning the super bowl.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:39 AM
Not really.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:39 AM
Tom Hanks is wonderful.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:39 AM
This. We delude ourselves into thinking that social media griping is emblematic of a nationwide movement when in reality, 80 percent of fans — and 100 percent of fans of teams who won — don’t give a shit.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:39 AM
Like last night, Stafford was so down on that sack that I don’t know how they missed it. I think he initially popped up because of the way he was tackled, realized there wasn’t a whistle, and then just kept going. Forcing a team to burn a challenge for something like that doesn’t reflect well on the officials. And it’d be even worse if someone gets severely injured on such a play.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:40 AM
These aren’t the normal refs?
September 17th, 2012 at 9:40 AM
Just finished the Lewis piece. That guy sure can strong words together. Great read.
classic.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:40 AM
My wife just got one of those. Seems to help with our dog during the storms. The old one just cant handle storms, and our house gets ridiculously loud/scary during storms. Luckily the puppy is too dumb to know better.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:41 AM
Ed Hochuli would’ve called Stafford down and would’ve blown the whistle before Alex Smith snapped the ball at the end of the first quarter.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:41 AM
Gotta love that false start after they won the challenge.
/Stupid Lions…
September 17th, 2012 at 9:42 AM
I’d go the opposite way NDUB. I think if people scrutinized the old refs the same way the way you’d get a similar list of errors. I know there are some minor procedural errors but that should only be an issue if they don’t diminish over time.
If anything, I’d assert that the NFL will only dig in their position more firmly after these two weeks. I don’t think anything short of a brutal brutal playoff-spot deciding calamity will cause the NFL to cede to the Refs at this point.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:42 AM
Not sure what these two items have to do with one another. The media absolutely jumped all over the bounty story, often with shitty reporting (MICKEY LOOMIS WAS LISTENING TO OPPOSING COACHES YOU GUYS!!!). Even when it became clear that Godell was railroading the players and coaches to try and avoid a lawsuit from crippled veterans, very few in the sports press spoke up.
I’m not a Saints fan by any means. But their fanbase has a lot of legitimate gripes, one major one being that Payton is still suspended.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:42 AM
That happened 3 times…

Anyone ever owned a beagle? I’ve been looking at adopting a young adult. It’d fit well in the one-bedroom apartment and be ok if I was gone all day at work.
I’ve had a basset hound and an ex-g/f who had a beagle puppy who was stubborn as fuck. My buddy has a hilarious beagle/boston terrier mix that’s a bundle of energy, but a good boy.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:44 AM
Burleson is a turd. But I seriously dislike Titus Young SENIOR, wherever the fuck that came from. I can only hope Ryan Broyles overtakes him. Young is such a scrawy, undisciplined fuckhead.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:45 AM
Tom Hanks is wonderful.
I could see him in a Tiger Woods / Mel Gibson situation. And I like Tom Hanks. I just think he’s got some dark raging alcoholic side or something that’s out there well-hidden. I realize that’s unfair but that’s just this vibe I get. Peyton Manning too. I see all his commercials and I think “just wait til the 20 chicks he’s banging all sell their stories”
September 17th, 2012 at 9:46 AM
That awareness/desire will last only so long when a massive sieve posing as your offensive line is in place. Vick needs to get out of the pocket and make plays and stop falling for the notion that he has to show he’s a pocket passer. It’s where he gets hurt most of the time anyway…………………His takedown of Ray Lewis on that fumble recovery was impressive.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:46 AM
Is confused.
Hard to create a playoff-caused calamity in week 2. But again, if the Cowboys or Patriots had a win stolen from them like the Ravens did, national outrage would force the NFL’s hand. Jerry Jones would march like Sherman to New York demanding accountability, burning everything along the way.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:47 AM
I’ve been looking at adopting a young adult.
They are called prostitutes and you just pay them to leave. You don’t even have to feed them.
Anyone ever owned a beagle?
I have not, but I know people who have. It seems like they all die youngerish from some genetic disorder/disease.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:48 AM
Big Tom Hanks fan. Except in that pretentious piece of shit movie “Incredibly Loud 9/11 Porn Movie With The Longest Title Ever.” He hasn’t made a good flick in several years, so I’m hoping he drops the effin hammer in “Cloud Atlas.”
September 17th, 2012 at 9:48 AM
The regular refs are just as likely to commit this kind of error, they can’t even get goddamn coin tosses right.
I don’t see how the union has one bit of leverage.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:48 AM
Love Vick. But even with the lack of Peters and the mistakes through two games, it’s not like he was any different last year when the line was excellent (yes, they were excellent). Just who he is. Whether he’s in the pocket or out it would be better if he anticipated a hit better, or knew when to go down (I’m not talking about sliding) and not take the maximum force of a hit.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:48 AM
Beagle’s have a lot – a lot – of energy. You’ll be walking that dog several times a day, rain or shine. The get into everything and eat anything. They’re dumb as rocks and stubborn to boot. They also live forever, so be prepared for 10-15 years of this.
I had good memories of my grandfather’s beagles, so I got one. I overlooked the fact that his were hunting dogs and had several acres to run around on.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
Friend of a friend owns one and he’s a total dick. I think it’s hilarious… him, not so much. I’m in a similar living situation and I got a 3 year old corgi/dachshund mix. Great companion dog, very quiet, and they’re smart enough to learn just about anything.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
Bounty stuff don’t bother me. I’m not naive enough to think that they were the only ones doing that kind of stuff. But coaches were repeatedly warned to cut it out by the league and they chose to ignore it. Don’t fucking whine when the big brother gets pissed cause you are waving your dick at them.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
We had a beagle once and adored him. From what I gathered ours was somewhat laid back as far as beagles go. Obviously it will help you that you’re adopting an adult rather than a puppy but I’d still do my homework on whether they would work well in an apartment. Based on our experience I’d be hesitant to do so. We had a house and still crated him during the day.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
The “officiating” for Skins-Rams was a complete shitshow. Keystone Kops running around out there.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:50 AM
The more you say it the funnier it gets.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:50 AM
Beagles aren’t dumb as rocks, they’re smart as shit, they just only care about their noses. They will get into anything, but if you’re leaving stuff out that an eighteen inch tall dog can get into you shouldn’t be owning a dog in the first place.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:50 AM
Didn’t you LOVE how he quit running on that play that he could have maybe caught for 6? Oh and why were the only 3 shots down field Stafford took to Young? He’s like 5′ 11″. If only the Lions had some 6′ 5″ freak with a 44″ vertical…
September 17th, 2012 at 9:51 AM
Well, hell, I didn’t realize those little fellas were such bundles of energy. My buddy has his beagle/boston hybrid and he’s got an on and off switch just like day and night. It’s incredible.
I guess I thought beagle because it’s a good size for my apartment. I’d love to get a lab, but I’m afraid it’d be a bit too large and probably shed too much for my liking. Could be a good tradeoff though because they’re awesome dogs.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:51 AM
I don’t quite see anything scandalous coming from Tom Hanks’ life. Great actor, seems to be a nice guy, and supports the hell out of our troops without being political. He’s been with the same woman pretty much all his life, and looks to be a good family man; sort of like a modern day Paul Newman.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:51 AM
I don’t know what particular error you are talking about, but there were 5 times yesterday where the refs had to stop the Eagles game because they had no idea where to spot the ball. They didn’t know yardage on certain penalties. That’s not even judgement call mistakes, it’s rules knowledge. It’s bad.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:52 AM
We had to put ours down at 4 years old because he had some kind of allergy or other issue the vet couldn’t diagnose. He would rub his back on the underside of our deck until the fur was gone and his skin would crack and bleed. As you might expect it made him pretty irritable with other dogs and kids, both of which he normally loved. We had very young kids at that point and couldn’t trust him any more.
It was incredibly sad.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:52 AM
Ndub – Beagles a freaking awesome, but they do tend to bark and howl a lot.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:53 AM
Regular refs struggle. No doubt. But they wouldn’t let defenses get away with holds and armbars every play. They wouldn’t get confused about offensive PI. They wouldn’t call Ike Taylor for PI when he was three feet from the defender. They wouldn’t rule Vick’s throw a fumble then not know to call grounding.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:53 AM
My beagle was a laid back pimp.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:53 AM
That being said, I have no opinion about whether the referees are getting more or less leverage as the weeks go by. No idea.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:53 AM
Beagles rank 72 of 79 breeds in intelligence. They are great for what they’re breed for – hunting – but outside of that, not so much.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:53 AM
I think Beagles are also supposed to be kept in pairs. I think they also are known for running away from owners before they die.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:53 AM
I also find beagles’ comically large ears to be… well, comical.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:54 AM
The owners SHOULD be very concerned about the officiating. Their biggest concern should be potential injuries to their investments… the players. There was a play in the Eagles/Ravens game when Vick threw a pass that was deflected at the line of scrimmage. The play should have been whistled dead at that point, but the refs never blew the whistle and the players all piled on each other going after the loose ball. This went on for about 5 seconds. Then finally 2 or 3 refs got together and decided it was an incomplete pass. After seeing the reply – it was so obvious – couldn’t believe they missed it. That is the type of play when someone could have easily blown out a knee.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:54 AM
Whatever you do, don’t get a puggle (beagle/pug mix). Those things are awful.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:54 AM
Awesome, Darrell.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:55 AM
I understand we live in the world of hyperbole on the internet, and I think this is where this is coming from, IMO. These refs just can’t do the job. They don’t understand what they are doing. Blown calls happen with the real refs, but they know the rules.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:55 AM
Labradoodle. They don’t shed.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:55 AM
Only come across two beagles, one was a fucking spaz that had many health issues, the other is a ninny that runs up and down it’s fence barking it’s fucking head off when I go running. To me, smarts are what make a good/bad dog. A dumb fucking dog that doesn’t listen is worthless, regardless of the breed.
/Sorry for all the cursing.
//Skins fan on a Monday and all…
September 17th, 2012 at 9:55 AM
I’m here to remind people about terrible officiating by overmatched substitutes. However…
Anyone ever owned a beagle? I’ve been looking at adopting a young adult. It’d fit well in the one-bedroom apartment and be ok if I was gone all day at work.
this will be the biggest mistake of NDub’s life.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:55 AM
I’d get a German Shepherd in a heartbeat if I wouldn’t have to confine it to a single-bedroom apartment.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:56 AM
Yes they would.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:56 AM
Yep. The dispute is not about money. It’s about the refs wanting to be treated as full-time employees while keeping their part-time status.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:56 AM
I agree with you on this. Plus, they lied. All that factored in, though, Goddell blatantly cracked down on the Saints to avoid a lawsuit, torpedoing their season to try and cover up mistakes they made in the past. And no one said anything about it.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:57 AM
To tie it together, I think a beagle would’ve ran a better route there than Young SENIOR. I really hope he goes away.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:57 AM
So funny to see miniature schnauzer #12 on that list, I had one as a kid and he was famously stupid.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:57 AM
My parents had a cocker spaniel (worst dog ever) with this type of condition. Vet called them “hot spots” and said it was from all the inbreeding.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:57 AM
I think the old refs bit off more than they can chew in their negotiations. They asked for a seperate pension plan than what was greater than what all NFL employees received. This is the main sticking point.
The gap isn’t that big but I think these old refs are just pissing money away each week.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:57 AM
You’ve made a powerful enemy today, my friend.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:58 AM
I know three people who have them – they’re awesome dogs. Sharp as hell and, yes, no shedding.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:59 AM
Okay I guess the replacements are worse at knowing the rules but it’s not like the regular refs are competent. I don’t think they have any ground to stand on with a “you need us for the integrity of the game” argument.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:59 AM
\
This is the correct call:
Re Vick’s “intenetional grounding.” Check the play again. Vick was in grasp of defender. Threw ball into ground, in pocket.
He was getting sacked and threw it away before he hit the ground. Textbook grounding. Naturally it wasn’t called.
September 17th, 2012 at 9:59 AM
I am really shocked people think the old NFL refs were all that. They weren’t.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:00 AM
/Chicago teacher strike joke
September 17th, 2012 at 10:00 AM
You’ve made a powerful enemy today, my friend.
So i probably shouldn’t tell the story of when I was hunting with my uncle and the beaghle chased the rabbit and they came to a big tree root sticking out of the ground? Let just say one went over, one went under and not the way you’d (or my uncle) expect.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:01 AM
Yeah that’s baffling. We’re not that far removed from everyone being convinced they handed the Steelers a title over Seattle for god’s sake. Was the officiating in that game really better than what we’ve seen this year?
September 17th, 2012 at 10:01 AM
this will be the biggest mistake of NDub’s life.Beagle you need to find a referral to a breeder, it’s a risky breed like all popular dogs. Hilariously though they seem to be able to bark louder the faster they run. Barking calms down a great deal after year 3 in my experience which would work if you get a trained mature dog. They are totally inferior to the American Eskimo in all metrics except shedding.
/spits
September 17th, 2012 at 10:01 AM
If shedding is a concern, then this. Anything mixed with a poodle will have this glorious trait. Although don’t get a Goldendoodle. Your friends will constantly ask you what kind of dog you have, just to make you say this most unmanly of breeds in front of people.
/not that we regularly do that to a co-worker or anything
September 17th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
I dont think its that. The general incompetence (not knowing the rules, not being able to determine the proper calls, being scared to make a mistake, being scared to be yelled at by coaches and players) is really the issue here.
That Ravens-Eagles game was an abortion. The damn thing lasted almost four hours for god sake.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
Youre going to go with anonymous Twitter commenter over a former head ref over what a ‘real’ ref would have called in that situation? Ok.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
But they 1, knew the rules which helped speed the games along and 2, maintained order. Nobody rational is expecting some magical effect once the regular refs return. But I’d like to see most of the games go back to ending within 200 minutes and less bullshit like what went on during most of Philly/Baltimore.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:03 AM
Agreed. But, the old refs would blow the whistle if the play clock expired.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:03 AM
You’ll have to be desperate or really bored to go sit through Cloud Atlas in theaters. 2 hours 45 minutes.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:03 AM
Hey NDub, doesn’t matter how big your apartment is if you make a committment to exercising your dog regularly. You can have a huge dog in a small place. Just tire them out.
Beagles suck. They’re adorable but they bark like mad and shed like crazy. Plus, they’re a little dumb.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
Didn’t stop people from sitting through three hours of Chris Nolan’s plotholes this summer.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
Re Vick’s “intentional grounding.” Check the play again. Vick was in grasp of defender. Threw ball into ground, in pocket.
I watched it four times yesterday, and I wanted it to be grounding. You can’t know where he was throwing the ball, because he got blown up as he was throwing it. You have to use your logic bone here, and not your butt bone.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
We’re seeing Seattle-Pittsburgh type officiating in every game now though. Teams are having wins stolen from them. Steven Jackson lost a touchdown, which could affect bonus money down the road. It’s out of control. There are real ramifications for poor officiating.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
Aussie doodles are awesome dogs.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
You suck.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
A couple times already they’ve struggled to get the ball ready for play causing the Packers to have to back out of running no-huddle…missing a PI call here or a hold there is par for the course since officiating NFL games at full speed is hard, but that shit shouldn’t be
September 17th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
The one thing I find most hilarious about the Labradoodles or Goldendoodles is that their hair covers their eyes like some emo guitarist. I have no idea how they see. Also, they always appear to be smiling.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
The refs can’t call a penalty based on video, they only review the disputed call. Plus, Vick was aiming for the receiver who was in the corner at the 1 yard line anyway.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
Fair, I just don’t see how “our incompetence is more finely honed” is a strong bargaining position.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
why hello!
September 17th, 2012 at 10:06 AM
This. I can’t believe any of you are defending these clowns. Someone will get hurt as a result of their incompetence, I promise you. The old officials woudl blo judgement calls agreed, but these guys can’t make a simple procedural call, like so many others have pointed out. It’s laughable. When the non-player talking head in the booth INSTANTLY spots the mistakes, you know you’re in trouble.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:06 AM
Beagles suck
You suck.
I agree with both of you.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:06 AM
Truth.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:06 AM
He was in the pocket getting sacked and threw the ball away to avoid taking the sack. That’s grounding every single time.
Again, not a major deal (although fourth and goal from the 11 is tough) compared to having the game winning TD taken away unjustly.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
I feel like all this officiating talk from that game yesterday is taking away from what should be good fun had at Joe Flacco’s second-half expense

It’s not, I agree. Their only bet is to have owners, players and fans turn on the league. Otherwise, they’d better just accept the lower pension.
Doesnt really matter what he was aiming for. He was in the pocket in the grasp of a defender and the ball didn’t go past the LOS. Grounding.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
He was in the pocket getting sacked and threw the ball away to avoid taking the sack. That’s grounding every single time.
that’s not what happened.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
Also, they always appear to be smiling.
That dog is retarded. But as they say, if you love something, trap it in your apartment nine hours a day day while you are out.
Just wait til you meet some broad at a bar you’re getting ready to close on and have to abort plans to go and let the dog out.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:10 AM
I think vet’s use the hot spot term as a cover-all for skin diseases that they aren’t sure what they are. my old dog used to get them from time to time, usually from bug bites. she would chew that shit raw down to the skin.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:10 AM
Zing. I like Nolan a lot, but TDKR was not in the realm of his best work.
Cloud Atlas will receive three hours of my attention this fall. Not a problem.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
Don’t think they could really determine whether or not his knee was down when the ball crossed the plane, but it was handled badly. I love that they allowed Fisher to challenge a turnover (not allowed. 15 yd penalty) without throwing a flag. Shanahan’s eyes almost bursted from his head. Many, many, idiotic mistakes in this game.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
They guy should have finished with 200+ yards, 2 TDs and an INT. But the refs didn’t let that happen.
In all seriousness, the lack of perspective exhibited by the sports media is incredible. After anointing him as elite last week, this week he sucks because the officials blew a call that would have made him the game-winning QB.
It’s Flacco’s fault the officials are terrible? He didn’t play well in the second half (a lot of which was due to the inexplicable decision to abandon the no-huddle and let the worst OC in the league take over the offense) but won the game on that TD throw to Jones. Nothing he can do about incompetent officials.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
Doesnt really matter what he was aiming for. He was in the pocket in the grasp of a defender and the ball didn’t go past the LOS. Grounding.
so it doesn’t matter if what happens happens unintentionally, you would insist that the referees rule his unintentional act be deemed intentional grounding?
September 17th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
I just don’t get how anyone could badmouth a beagle.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:13 AM

September 17th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
I don’t know how easy it is to find them to adopt, but we have two boxers and they are awesome (as anyone who has ever seen my twitter feed can attest to). Really awesome family dogs, very protective, but generally quiet, except when strangers come around. They are a bit intimidating, which I like, but absolutely love kids, and are very stoic, be it kids pulling their tails, or the vet trying to do something to them.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
That was just the most visible part of it. His snout itched too, as did other parts of his body. And his sense of smell seemed superheightened at times when we took him on a walk. But he really went to town on his back, that was the worst part. We’d have to kennel him to keep him from bleeding all over the place. We tried wrapping his torso, nothing worked.
It pained us to put him down but there was nothing else to do. We tried tests, different diets, nothing worked. But until that issue came on, he was a GREAT dog. Super energetic as a puppy but after he turned 1 or so he settled down a lot and was pretty well behaved.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
Don’t worry I’m still convinced Joe Flacco is terrible. I didn’t let week one fool me.
/Bengals defense has given up massive passing days to Flacco and Weeden.

They’re just instinctive animals. They’re brilliant for their own agenda, they just don’t give a shit about being some bitch’s trained monkey.
My beagle literally had a stash of candy he kept in the house. For months we would find scattered wrappers on the floor then when we moved we found his secret pile, little bastard had stolen a bag of Halloween candy.
On the flip side, I had a piece of rib roast sitting on a clear glass table once and he jumped straight into it from the bottom because he couldn’t tell there was glass there.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:18 AM
what i do like is that they refs don’t give long-winded explanations when a play is turned over.
“after review, it was determined that the player had the ball, but then dropped it. 2nd down.”
September 17th, 2012 at 10:18 AM
I guess we just disagree on his intent. It looked to me like he was clearly throwing the ball away to avoid taking a sack on second and goal.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:19 AM

I know of a labradoodle that steals and eats the underwear of the women his master brings home every weekend.
that’s not what happens to those underpants. I’ll bet all those “women” are from Niagara Falls.
NDub: Prove you were with a woman
Dude: I can’t, my dog ate her underwear
NDub: I should get a dog

Yep. Gotta have a fence and it’s got to be secured. Ours would dig under it, so we fattened him up a bit so he couldn’t. They just like to party, doesn’t matter where the party is, they can just smell it happening somewhere.

I wonder why you’d see it that way? Hmmmmmm….

It does matter. If the ref determines he was aiming for a receiver, unless he blows his whistle and says the QB is in the grasp, there is no call. But the bottom line is, the ref can’t look at a video that is determining whether a play was a pass attempt or a fumble, determine it a pass attempt, and then say there’s intentional grounding.

Invisible Fence FTMFW. Worked for our chocolate lab when I would have bet money it wouldn’t. Lifelong fan as a result.

What’s a ballpark $$ amount for an invisible fence anyway? I’ve always wondered.

Depends on how much area you want to fence in. Can’t remember the price per linear foot, but we did about 2 acres for 1500-ish. They have in the house solutions as well.

I wonder why you’d see it that way? Hmmmmmm….
also of note, DeMeco Ryans was not touched on the INT he had of Flacco. At all. Refs blew it dead, but he was up and in the clear.
Bad calls both ways.
And his point about Jacoby Jones would seem a lot better of Jacoby Jones hadn’t put a hand on Nmandi’s facemask, which he did. It was a terrible, terrible call. But it wasn’t the only terrible, terrible call.
Plus, the Ravens defense had a chance to win the game by stopping Philly. (and you’re utterly wrong about the grounding call). And then, Joe Flacco had a chance to win the game by driving only for a FG.
Baltimore shat away another game where they had a lead.

Oh, that’s better than I figured it would be. Ours is only about .4 acres and if we ever get a dog again I’d probably prefer the invisible fence to the real thing.

It’s wonderful and they learn it verrrrry quickly. A nasty shock will do that to you. Once they learn that boundary, wild horses can’t pull them across it. My lab lays down on the ground to avoid going across.

I liked a real fence because we could keep him outside when we were gone during the day, with a dog house he would just sleep in it, roll around in the yard, or sit on the doghouse (stereotypical beagle).
Downside of just an invisible fence is that while it keeps the dog from running (most of the time) it does dick to protect from other dogs. You still can’t really leave them unattended.

Live in the boonies, so not a concern for me. The dogs around us are all friendly and just want to sniff some ass and run around. Left unattended frequently.

What I’ve learned in this thread–
for Queefer, Obama=Ravens. Can do no wrong, and if they lose, it’s someone else’s fault.
September 17th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
It was the only terrible call that cost a team a win.
The Ravens should have never had to worry about Vick scoring or driving for a winning FG. They had already won the game.
