Alex Smith Used to Be Viewed as a Bust, But Jim Harbaugh Has Changed All That
Alex Smith, before Jim Harbaugh’s arrival: Five seasons, 51 TDs, 53 INTs, never a completion rate above 60 percent, highest yards per attempt 6.9., and a hideous record of 19-31.
In 18 regular season games since Harbaugh took over:
21 TDs, 4 INTs
completion rate: 62.3
Yards per attempt: 7.1
record: 15-3 record
Before Harbaugh’s arrival: ALEX SMITH IS A BUST! Remember how, after Harbaugh passed on the Dolphins and picked the 49ers, the coach surprised many by saying the 49ers would sign Smith to a 1-year deal? And then San Francisco drafted Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick in the 2nd round? It appeared as if Smith wasn’t the long term solution.
But as the NBC crew noted Sunday night against Detroit: Smith, the No. 1 pick in 2005, is all grown up. Smith was brilliant against Green Bay in the opener, then superb again against the Lions.
This was a masterful recognition of Detroit’s defense, changing the play – Davis was going to have double coverage up top, so he sent a player in motion – and then throwing the TD pass.
Is it Jim Harbaugh’s simplified playbook? Has the improved defense had that much of an impact on his confidence? It isn’t like his offensive weapons are different – Frank Gore and Davis were there for the lean Alex Smith years.

the niners defense thinks he’s a better qb now too
September 17th, 2012 at 2:01 PM
Some people just mature later than others. I know in my athletic career, I was always becoming more comfortable and hitting my stride always just as I was moving up to the next level, where it would start all over.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:03 PM
Isn’t this the first time he’s had the same offense in place for two consecutive seasons? The Niners were one of the more incompetently run organizations over the last decade before finally getting the Harbaugh hire right
September 17th, 2012 at 2:04 PM
A great chicken-or-egg argument: did Smith get better because Harbaugh worked on him, or did Smith simply mature, with Harbaugh the beneficiary of a player finally “getting it”?
Seems like Harbaugh was the catalyst. They sure looked poised and efficient last night.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:04 PM
John Wendling doesn’t belong in the NFL.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:05 PM
First time in his career he’s had the same offense two years in a row. Also baby hands.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:05 PM
SF Giants: Barry Bonds – performance enhancement drugs – bigger head
SF 49ers: Alex Smith – performance enhancement drugs – bigger hands.
Look at that first photo – you think he’s “palming” a football coming out of college? I don’t think so.
I say “BALCO” is the cause of his improvement.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:06 PM
It looked to me like he really wound up into his throws, and tried too hard to force a few without the arm strength behind it. I could see a better secondary getting a few picks off him in a game they have to throw a lot. He’s been great, but he’s also had the huge benefit of having a good run game that defenses need to worry about, and a defense that can really help provide/protect a lead.
I’m not going to elevate him too far yet, just like I won’t drop him much when he has the one upcoming stinker of a game and everyone swings the other way on him.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:06 PM
Offensive line is much improved. Crabtree has improved.

September 17th, 2012 at 2:07 PM
Ah, Alex Smallhands has improved, but he’s still no Nate Davis.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:07 PM
Couldnt believe Wendling and Florence were starting for Detroit – when you can’t crack the Bills 2-deep secondary it’s not a good sign. Wendling was a decent ST guy but barely saw the field on defense in Buffalo.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
Sounds perfectly cromulent to me.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
He sure as hell out played Stafford. God, he was not good last night. Not good at all. He better throw for 350+ and 3 or 4 TD’s next week against the Titans.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
Bo. The correct answer has to be Bo.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
But what about the peens?
/ Dong blog question
September 17th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
BABY HANDS!!!
September 17th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
He wasn’t the problem last night. Made a couple plays. Missing 3 of your 4 starters in the secondary sucks.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
Yeah. I think he’s been good and I’m not trying to be unfairly critical, but more than once he completed a throw that I thought was a bad decision when it left his hand. Maybe someone with the all-22 footage can see if it was great throws or poor coverage, but I didn’t see a ton of spots where he actually created a throwing lane, or ‘threw’ a WR open, which at some point he’ll be asked to do, if they want to win the Superbowl.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
Agreed that Singletary left Harbaugh a great foundation to build upon.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:11 PM
If it was based on pure talent and arm, Kaepernick would be the starter right now.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:11 PM
good thing the 49ers will never have to rely on alex smith to take over and win. because he still is just average. but that defense is just awesome.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:11 PM
agreed that harbaugh’s getting a bunch of credit when he hasn’t accomplished anything and are only in that position due to disloyalty towards their alma mater.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:11 PM

September 17th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
Yeah good thing he wasn’t great against the Saints last year….
September 17th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
You can’t spell “Malignant” without “Eli Manning”
/and a T
September 17th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
He better throw for 350+ and 3 or 4 TD’s next week against the Titans.
He will. They are atrocious.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
Hey now, he was a dropped Hail Mary away from making a Super Bowl.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
He looks even better than last year, but let’s not get carried away here. 21 TD’s in 18 games isn’t lighting the world on fire. Neither is a 7.1 YPA.
He’s not asked to win many shootouts. Neither was Trent Dilfer.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
49er uniforms are just beautiful.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
can’t really hate on that…but yea…i hate harbaugh something fierce.
/he does seem like a fairly stupendous coach tho, have to admit
September 17th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
It’s fun to watch Alex Smith now without cringing, like we did in most of his early years. Props to Harbaugh and his staff for turning things around, and for the Niners front office for actually making a good, competent hire.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
I got “Ex Smal”.
As in hand size.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
Michael Crabtree was unreal last night. Fuck that guy. Good game plan Gunther.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
/brandon weeden is the biggest bust of all time
//week 1′d
September 17th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
Your irrational hatred for Stafford is truly a delight to read.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
This. Niners are like the 2000 Ravens or the 2002 Bucs. They’ll win with defense, and just enough offense to get by, though they may occasionally bust out a 40-point game.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
trent dilfer loved shootouts…because he’s a necrophiliac, you see?
September 17th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
So Weeden will be playing at Alex Smith’s level when he’s 35? Good investment.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
You’re asking a guy to cook Thanksgiving dinner with Spam and pickle relish packets
September 17th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
As much as I like Hoke, I wouldn’t complain if Harbaugh wanted to come back to Ann Arbor*.
* = never going to happen.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:20 PM
I’m waiting for the word “hillbilly” to appear, so we can tie this in to the Appalachia discussion over in the Ky-WKy post.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:20 PM
A 60% completion percentage and a 6.9 YPA are two boxes I hope to one day check off.

oh soused…sweet, sweet soused.
bradon weeden’s already gone thru puberty so his hands are not of the baby persuasion.

September 17th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
Sounds like he’s bound for the Namath wing of the HOF.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
He’s played about 14 good games in 7 fucking years.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
Your blind loyalty to a hillbilly that just played two poor to awful games to start the season is truly disgusting. I was all in on Stafford to start the year. He was great the last 5 or 6 games of last year. Dude has accuracy issues.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
Well, Brandon Weeden is older than Alex Smith…so this makes sense.
/seriously

That 49er’s DEF are one tough son-of-a-bitch defense. They are more like the Stillers than the Stillers are.
They’re gonna rock MIA this year.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
exactly my point…BRANDON WEEDEN IS NOT A NUMBER, HE’S A FREE MAN.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
Yeah good thing he wasn’t great against the Saints last year….
good thing one game does not make a trend….
September 17th, 2012 at 2:26 PM
Sounds like he’s bound for the Namath wing of the HOF.
Also known as the worst NFL HOFer. I’d put Ray Guy in before Fraudway Joe.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:26 PM
The average age of a Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks is 29.8 so expect a big Cleveland victory in August 2013.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
Leave Denard out of this.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
Leave Braxton out of it too. He’s a work in progress!
September 17th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
Right after he finishes checking off Eva Longoria’s box.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:29 PM
I’m unaware of any expression of blind loyalty to Stafford in these parts. He’s not perfect, but he’s the best QB the organization has had in a long time. Throwing off his back foot, sometimes sailing some passes, and not locking in on Johnson are areas he needs to work on. He’s one of four QBs to throw for over 5,000 yards. That takes a certain type of player.
Again “blind loyalty” is quite the overstatement.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
Not as much as that “D”. I kept looking for Greg Robinson on their sideline.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
another salient point…which of those super bowl winning QB’s spent a bunch of years not playing football? kurt warner (29) and roger staubach (30) turned out ok and had some quick success with their teams.
also…cunt.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:31 PM
Also, he led the Lions to two huge drives last week and played a good second half, on the road, at night, against the toughest D in the league. “Poor to awful” is quite an overstatement, as well.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
Counterpoint: they were both good
September 17th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
Fickell sucks. They need to just wrap up instead of trying to make the big hit. That cost them about 3 TD’s.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
Could be another Baby Hands. For 6’2″, 220, dudes got smallish hands.* His throws were pretty tight spirals against Cal, though.
* No Coop?

One that plays in a dome and from two scores down a lot?
/Couldn’t resist
September 17th, 2012 at 2:35 PM
countercounterpoint: weeden has played all of two professional games, one of which he looked good.
/looked up staubach’s game log…jesus christ, apparently passing was viewed along the same lines as fucking children back then

takes canadians 20 extra yards to play football because, much like diet america, tastes great with less filling.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
Any Lions fan care to explain to me why they didn’t take one shot down the field to Megatron on a jump ball? That was the thing that baffled me the most….that, and us allowing 50 goddamn yards on a screen pass in the 4th quarter.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:38 PM

September 17th, 2012 at 2:39 PM
I referring to his other comments earlier.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:39 PM
I’d like to see him play better. I’d also like a better running game so he’s not in the shotgun and essentially showing the defense that he’s going to pass. That does put a lot of pressure on him when the D already knows what’s going to happen.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:40 PM
We are in comparison a skinny people.
1st down run up the gut for no yards, punt team get ready. CFL blows.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
I was surprised they had as much success running the ball as they did. What impact do you think LeShoure will have?
I’m at the point now where if the Niners don’t play defense like I would against the computer on Madden, I’m disappointed.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
Playing under the lights, especially when you’re a perennially shitty indoor team who doesn’t get the primetime slots like the Lions, can have an affect on inexperienced players.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
as well as gloriously enbearded.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
I have no clue. They need a guy who can be explosive. Smith, Bell and LeShoure aren’t those types of players. Best is. But his brain is scrambled.
As far as the jumpball to Megatron – I’m surprised, too. I figured at least one. But you saw the game – the Niners were bracketing him with 3-4 guys at a time. It was ridiculous.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
I thought the Lions ran the ball better than expecedt. If anything they ran too much. LeShoure will help. Him and Smith should be a pretty good tandem. I blame Linehan more than Stafford. Pettigrew is still a dog as well. I was shocked he didn’t see more targets till later in the game.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
/also coop’d
September 17th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
Titans allowed Ridley 125 yards on 21 carries. If Smith gets carries I think he’ll have a good outing next week.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:46 PM
I really want to see what Ryan Broyles can do. Fuck Titus Young.
And Backus looks old. He’s always been solid, not spectacular, and for every really good block he gives, he gets beat (which was shown a few times in replays last night). When’s this Rieff guy gonna play?

September 17th, 2012 at 2:48 PM
freedom isn’t free, it costs more than a fuckin’ loonie. cuz if you don’t pay your buck o’ five, the job creators won’t either.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:48 PM
The difference in going from Mike Singletary to Jim Harbaugh is just staggering. Singletary is best-suited for the role of team minister. What a boob that guy was.
September 17th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
You know what? I thought the O-line was pretty good. Backus always struggles against elite DE’s ie Peppers, Smith etc. He is what he is. Backus will still be the starter this year. Perhaps Reiff will take Cherilus’ job eventually.
