NFL Sunday: Saints Travel to Carolina With Both Teams Needing a Win
New Orleans hears your talk about how they have been affected by the Bountygate stuff. In truth, they were affected by the loss of Will Smith, and a Redskins team that came out with a great game plan and exploited a vulnerable defense, while pressuring Brees on the other side of the ball. Of course, it’s nice if your “bad” day results in scoring 32 points while having a potential touchdown fumbled out of the back of the end zone for a touchback. The Saints will be fine.
They still face a tough road test in Carolina. The Panthers offense struggled last week, particular blocking on the interior line, and the Buccaneers beat them 16-10. We don’t know if that was the sign of a sophomore offensive slump under Ron Rivera, or if the Bucs announced that they would be a difficult out at home. Cam Newton vowed that the Panthers will average more than 10 points a game. Bold prediction, to think you will be better than the 1976 Buccaneers.
This matchup will come down to whether the Saints do a better job of protecting Brees, and whether Carolina can solve their issues up front that led to an invisible amount of rushing yards and pressure on Newton.
The other games today, in order of time and my watchability rating (until it becomes close late):
Baltimore at Philadelphia: everyone likes Baltimore, so I’m picking the Eagles in a interconference battle.
Tampa Bay at NY Giants: Schiano returns to New Jersey, will the Bucs continue to bring the fire on defense? Giants vulnerable at cornerback but should bounce back offensively (drops by Cruz, early fumble by Wilson affecting the output last game)
Minnesota at Indianapolis: Yeah, it’s not a prolific matchup of playoff teams, but we get to see how Luck improves to game two. Colts dealing with lots of injuries, but hope for some home magic.
Cleveland at Cincinnati: Rubbernecking on this one. Brandon Weeden has to be better. The Bengals have plenty of injuries. The Browns are now without Joe Haden.
Kansas City at Buffalo: Fitzpatrick was brutal, as was the Chiefs defense last week.
Oakland at Miami: Carson Palmer will teach Ryan Tannehill how to throw interceptions the right way.
Houston at Jacksonville: Jaguars have injury question marks along both lines, not a good combo going against the Texans. Jacksonville did look better last week, but will it continue with some key guys out?
Arizona at New England: Kevin Kolb in New England. The Pats are heavy favorites, will probably only watch if Cardinals manage to make it a game late.
4 PM Games:
The late games are full of compelling matchups. The Cowboys going on the road again to Seattle, against Russell Wilson. Jets and Steelers. RGIII’s second start, coming against the team that traded the pick that made it possible in Washington. Oh, and Tennessee at San Diego.

really wish this Balt/PHI game was at 4:00.
September 16th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
damn you Mike Vick. Why, why, why? Great drive ends with horrible decision. Run the ball. Pick up those extra 2 yards.

Joe Flacco: NFL HERO MONDAY
NFL zero today?
Well, that really was a great play by Cole, it isn’t on Flacco. I just think he’ll struggle
September 16th, 2012 at 1:19 PM
i take the points. Lisk says go for it.
Andy Reid says …go for it and Shady Mccoy gets really lucky. Baltimore got a huge push, but McCoy kept his balance. whew.
September 16th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
Drew Brees doing Sanchez things on that pick six
September 16th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
CJ Spiller has some wheels
September 16th, 2012 at 2:05 PM
Eli Manning is throwing interceptions again. Go Bucs!
September 16th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
Been away all weekend. Eat it, USC.
BILLLLLLLLLSSSSSSS
September 16th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
Seriously patriots? Arizona isnt good. Kill them
September 16th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
Obviously you don’t ever watch the Cardinals. They have a VERY good defense, and they’re showing it today so far. I don’t think NE covers. I’m not quite convinced the Cardinals can win this game, but it’ll be close either way.
September 16th, 2012 at 2:47 PM
The Saints and
PanthersMonster is Meth need a winSeptember 16th, 2012 at 2:48 PM
Meth aren’t you at work early?
September 16th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
I came in a few minutes early to check on scores, shift starts at 3. Money’s at stake. I’ll sacrifice sitting here an extra 10-15 minutes for updates.
September 16th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
fair enough. Who did you go with again?
September 16th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
Sitting at home with the dog screaming “Cha-ching Cha-ching” every time Eagles coughed off the ball.
/Fuckin’ dork
September 16th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
3 Team: Ravens, Texans by 7.5, Redskins by 3.5
5 Team: Ravens, Texans, Saints by 2.5, Cowboys by 3.5 and Steelers by 6.5, I changed to that instead of Falcons
Could win 120 on 3 team
Could win 200 on 5 team
September 16th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
Did I miss something? Is Colston not playing? Or did he sleep with Brees’s wife last week? 3rd quarter and zero catches (and zero fantasy points too).
And Flacco just throwing an interception into triple coverage after being blown by the studio guys on NFL Network this morning is truly hilarious.
September 16th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
But Saints are setting up to do me dirty.
September 16th, 2012 at 2:54 PM
5 turnovers in Balt/Philly. 3rd qtr is 90 seconds old.
what a slobber knocker.
please just win by 3, Philly.
September 16th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
Philly isnt winning until they get a real QB. Vick just doesn’t cut it anymore
September 16th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
BLOCKED PUNT!!!! Cardinals ball at the 2!
September 16th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
Cards up 13-9 and their defense is playing very, very well.
September 16th, 2012 at 3:00 PM
Only way kolb can score a td. Give him no pressure. He is such a wimp
September 16th, 2012 at 3:00 PM
I still say arizonas defense isnt as good as you believe. It will even out
September 16th, 2012 at 3:02 PM
Cards up 13-9 and their defense is playing very, very well.
Glad I didn’t bank on that one.
September 16th, 2012 at 3:02 PM
You’re wrong on this one. Tons of talent, and a scheme that plays an aggressive, attacking plan. Let me guess, you think this is just the Pats not executing, rather than the Cardinals D playing as strong as they are? Or the Cardinals are only playing well because Hernandez is out?
September 16th, 2012 at 3:03 PM
yeah, definitely playing well, i’m wondering why they aren’t trying to attack the Arizona linebackers a bit more and take advantage of the extra couple rushers they are sending in.
September 16th, 2012 at 3:04 PM
AP I’m 100% confident I know a lot more about Arizona’s team (and defense) than you do. Just like I’m sure you know a lot more about your team than I do. Cards D is legit. Their offense is garbage though.
September 16th, 2012 at 3:05 PM
Cards aren’t sending extra rushers as much as you’d think.
September 16th, 2012 at 3:05 PM
Cards D is legit. Their offense is garbage though.
The object of the game is to finish with the most points.
/Madden’d
September 16th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
not every play, but i’ve seen some very transparent blitz packages w/o adjustments made.
/extent of my coaching career is madden 94-2013
September 16th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
The amount of confusion Ed Reed just showed through his body language was outstanding. I didn’t expect a whitey like Celek to be able to jump like that either, Ed.
September 16th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
well at least the pats defense is finally getting sloppy so the cardinals can close this game out at the beginning of the 4th quarter.
unless the pats go no huddle again, but i doubt their OLine could block two rushing, let alone 4-5.
September 16th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
So besides Cardinals fans, who had the Cardinals leading going into the 4th with the ball in the red zone?
/No one.
//now i think the Cardinals can win.
September 16th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
/No one.
Add me to that list.
September 16th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
I should have taken buffalo in the survivor pool. Patriots can lick balls
September 16th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
short of a surprising turnover here, or holding the cardinals to a FG, i think arizona walks out of this one with a win.
I don’t see the Pats making the right kind of adjustments offensively to score twice against this defense today.
September 16th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
there was literally no one who thought the Cardinals could win this game, with the exception of some Cardinals fans. I thought all along that NE would win, but by 7 or less. At this point, I feel like the Cardinals can pull this out.
September 16th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
Remember how I’ve been saying that that the Cardinals have a really good defense? i wasn’t kidding.
September 16th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
Pull this out? Whats pulling out?
/cromartie’d
September 16th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
WOW! TD Cardinals, up 11 in the 4th!
September 16th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
Pull this out? Whats pulling out?
Nice one. I’m going need more pick-me-ups like that here pretty soon. Fucking Saints.
September 16th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
haha..saints…and..the raiders make even the Dolphins look great
September 16th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
steelers need to win so that everyone in the AFC East will be 1-1
September 16th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
holy cow, Giants take the lead..
Pats within 2..
September 16th, 2012 at 4:11 PM
don’t ever say that shit.
September 16th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
don’t ever say that shit.
I was going to be saying that tonight, but Saints lost. So that whole card is worthless now.
September 16th, 2012 at 4:16 PM
Holy shit. the only thing that can go wrong happens.
September 16th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
Only put $10 on the 5 team card. If Ravens win or don’t lose by more than 2.5, and if Redskins win I still come out pretty good.
September 16th, 2012 at 4:20 PM
HE FUCKING MISSED IT
September 16th, 2012 at 4:21 PM
CARDINALS WIN!
September 16th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
Raiders need to go with Pryor next week. And fuck the Chiefs. Pretty much 80% of survival league participants are probably out now.
September 16th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
CARDINALS WIN!
Must be our lucky days. Your team beat Pats and mine stomped a hole in the Raiders. I know it’s only the Raiders.
/Still doesn’t care
//Go Ravens/Redskins
September 16th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
JHS, can we agree that they should win today to beat the jets?
Damn you gostkowski…
September 16th, 2012 at 4:24 PM
Survivor pool was good while it lasted,,..
September 16th, 2012 at 4:25 PM
What was survivor pool, A.P.? I kept seeing people bring it up but wasn’t around for the inception.
September 16th, 2012 at 4:26 PM
I got wrecked on the pickem league as well so far. Perhaps i should have stayed out of town for a few days longer
September 16th, 2012 at 4:27 PM
A TBL survivor pool on yahoo. You pick 1 team every week. If they win, you survive. If they lose, you’re eliminated. Can only use a team once per season
September 16th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
Seattle blocks dallas punt, returns for a TD..oh boy
September 16th, 2012 at 4:32 PM
Alright fucking Ravens better not lose the ball and give up another score after this.
September 16th, 2012 at 4:32 PM
Tampa got hosed.
