I believe this. The leading scorer in the NBDL one year might never make an NBA team. Maybe for most players, by 19 they either can hack it or not, but it seems like a minor league system might be a good idea. I’d be all for a 20 year age limit in NBA, but 18 in the NBDL.

So minor league hockey (AHL) outdraws minor league basketball (NBDL) by a large margin, despite basketball being much more popular to play in the US, and more popular as a professional league. Is it just that hockey fans will go to any hockey game, but basketball fans will only go to NBA games? Am I missing a variable?

I assume the AHL is a true farm team, where a decent percentage of players are good enough to play in NHL and will at some point.

In certain towns, AHL hockey has been there for a very long time. It’s well entrenched. Towns like Glen Falls and Hershey have had AHL hockey for a very long time.

AHL is pretty good hockey and it’s great to watch the future stars. Unless, of course, you’re the farm team for the Calgary Flames (like the Heat are) then there are no stars to watch.

College basketball, maybe? I know that if there were a minor league basketball team in Providence, it would play second fiddle to the Friars, while the P-Bruins really have little hockey competition.

I’d go to a bad Big 5 game in Philly before I would even consider an NBDL game.

Yes, it should be better than the NCAA. The players are different I guess though, in that a lot of NCAA players who don’t get to the NBA, go abroad. I’d think any NBDL team could beat any college team though, as pure conjecture?
