The NHL is Heading For Another Lockout
The NHL still exists and, with a chasm separating owners and players, looks destined for another lockout, the third of Gary Bettman’s tenure. The deadline is Midnight Saturday.
Players receive 57 percent of revenue under the current agreement. The players’ proposal called for a four percent decrease to 53 percent. The owners started at 43 percent and have budged to 47 percent. Expect the two sides to settle around 50 percent, after spending millions having their lawyers wave their dicks at each other.
Buffalo and USA goalkeeper Ryan Miller summed up the Bettman tenure pretty well.
“Gary has basically run this business for 20 years, so if he’s operated at a loss for how many of those years, how is he still in a position of leadership, or even have a job?”
NHL fans should not be too concerned though. It’s not as if both Gary Bettman and Donald Fehr have a track record of letting collective bargaining negotiations obliterate an entire season. Oh wait…
NBCSN should start preparing for life without its bell cow.

Tim Thomas has been on the owners’ side through this ideal, correct?

The players should really just let Don Fehr speak for them.

looks destined for another lockout, the third of Gary Bettman’s tenure.
The owners know the fans will come back, they’re willing to sit as long as it takes to get the deal they want.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
Looks like DeVito’s Penguin. That one’s been getting a lot of run lately at night.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
David Stern does.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
Only people I feel bad for is the people that rely on games for a living….like a waitress at a bar near the rink….dude selling programs for a second job….fast ford workers who get 40 shifts a season etc.
Players and owners can both go to hell.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
South of the Tim Horton line, this will not be a really big deal while the NFL is up and running.
I’m guessing this will go down like the NBA lock out and we end up with a 60-some game season, which everyone will love.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
Why are we back in this position again after a few years? How is this different?
September 14th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
Fuck parity. Contract/relocate and a luxury tax.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
He makes one hell of a Caucasian.
Ryan Miller is a career loser and should not be speaking for anyone. Silver medals are not to be celebrated in team events you fucking hack.

Speaking of, we’re getting a nice shiney new arena up here in Seattle, so, come on up.

I heard that the Seahawks were being little bitches about that.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
Am I crazy or does this look exactly like the percentage that NBA players and owners were fighting over.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
You can have the Panthers. Quebec can have the Yotes.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
Well I get your point, and acknowledge that Fehr did preside over the MLB-PA when they lost the 1994 playoffs, they didn’t lose the entire (or even half a season. Just the important part. And part of the next.
What was my point again? Oh yeah, Shea Weber gets paid $26 million whether there is a lockout or now, from a small (hockey) market team that is now bringing in no money, in a market that relies on momentum and team success to draw in casual fans who determine profit or loss for the team.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
No, it’s the Mariners. Those fucking baseball assholes in Japan. Unbelievable, really, after all the support they got in ’95 for their palace.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
Why would Mariners care about new basketball arena? How does it affect them?
September 14th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
Who gets the Islanders? Brooklyn?
September 14th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
Solution
There should be no hockey below the Mason Dixon line.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
Hockey and basketball season playoffs overlap the first few months of the baseball season, would that be it?
September 14th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
Yotes to Winnipeg as the Jets v3.0. Current Jets v2.0 to Colorado. Avalanche to Quebec.
Nothing seems like as great an admission of stupidity, as moving teams back to previously-vacated markets.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
Now you’re talking my language, but it’s gotta be about that dying sport known as baseball. Contract the Pirates!

September 14th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
David Stern pushed a deal through that most owners weren’t 100% on board with, just to save his “legacy”. You are already starting to hear rumblings from small market NBA owners that they are not happy that league didn’t hold out for a better deal. We are headed for another lockout once new NBA CBA runs out.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
There should be no hockey below the Mason Dixon line
Disagree, for the most part
September 14th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
Why would Mariners care about new basketball arena? How does it affect them?
Because the plan is to get NBA and NHL, so there will be crossover and they worry about losing fans. The M’s are run by the worst type of owners one can have, the kind that only care about running in the black. With only the Hawks to compete with, they still draw well enough to turn a profit, add two more teams and their brand of shitty baseball will be exposed and people will leave.
Oops, I mean, traffic, there will be traffic problems…

Is that true? If his contract is tied to the revenue number (57%, 55%, whatever), then he will get none if there is no revenue.
Same way in basketball. The players are not getting what the headline contract numbers suggest.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
I agree, sort of, or at least used to. The thing is, Nashville/country music/Hockey Tonk kinda go (surprisingly) well together. If a decent CBA is agreed to, I could see the team increasing its foothold here. It’s going to take time to develop loyal fans, but there are some pretty rabid fans, a lot of transplants from the North who already understand hockey, and great support from celebrities in a celebrity-dense city. And the owners/management/coach all seem to be smart and on the same page as far as running the team the right way. I was always surprised Carolina managed to draw the way they did (though that is down a little I think), and I think Nashville can be the same way.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
Haven’t had a drink in 11 hours or so, still drunk, think may liver is also on strike.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
I think that’s why he signed it the way he did. Salaries are separate from signing bonuses. I don’t think he can lose any bonuses, and $26 of the $27 million he’s paid in the first 13 months of the contract is signing bonuses. Pretty sure his agent set up a brilliant deal, where he is paid untouchable money no matter what happens, though you may want to check that with a better source.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
Nashville can keep the Preds if a lockout is avoided. But if we lose the season, that franchise is dead.
Bottom third of the league. They draw for shit, and couldn’t even keep it going after a cup year. They routinely cannot sell out playoff games.
Carolina
Tampa
Florida
Anaheim
Phoenix

Columbus

September 14th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
So their argument is “we don’t want basketball fans to have the opportunity to root for a home team because we want to force them to sit thru tortu….uh baseball”?
September 14th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
J-Mac, can you help here?
September 14th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
I’d look at it on a case by case basis.
What gets me is throwing good money after bad trying to create markets where there is no market to create.
Atlanta has now failed as a hockey market twice.
I don’t know what Phoenix’s problem is, but bailing them out is ridiculous.
And you can’t tell me there is a need for Florida to have two hockey teams.

September 14th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
So their argument is “we don’t want basketball fans to have the opportunity to root for a home team because we want to force them to sit thru tortu….uh baseball”?
Pretty much. They are the worst. I beg for them to sell the team, get Cuban up here, shit, anyone, these guys are terrible. They are openly against the deal. The pander to the basketball fans, though, with things like Sonics night, but that is for money. They have teamed up with the Port of Seattle and are harping on traffic. But then Hanson kicked in a boatload of cash for traffic resolutions and the M’s are still bitching. They are the fucking worst.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
Compelling argument
September 14th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
This is sadly possible. I’d like to go to more games as my own personal support for the owners, since they really went all out for the team, even if Suter (spits) lied to them and left town to be closer to his in-laws (whip crack). Well that and because there are always tons of really nice-looking women at hockey games here, and my wife doesn’t like to go to them.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
Nashville and Tampa are the only ones who average above 90% capacity, and those Tampa numbers are absolutely bullshit.
Dallas has been horrific in terms of support lately but you can’t dissolve teams that used to be real teams.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
How did I forget about New Jersey?
No business having a franchise in the middle of a state with no identity or affinity for a New Jersey-based sports team.
/The Jets and Giants do not identify as “New Jersey” teams
September 14th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
Would the Devils work in Brooklyn? Just asking. I have no idea about the area or if they care about hockey there….Islanders should move too.
There is apparently a new NHL type rink being built north of Toronto. Not sure it would work
September 14th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
Hamilton/Toronto could support another team.
Quebec City, Seattle, Hamilton, Kansas City will be the next in line for teams.
Kansas City will fail.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
Columbus would do just fine if they had someone with a modicum of sense runnign the show. They basically sold out the arena for the first 9 years of existence with the shittiest product in the NHL on the ice. Fans have realized that the product is shitty and are staying away. If the CBJ were a .500 team, the arena would be sold out every night.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
It’s just funny because I work with a lot more Devils fans than Rangers fans.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
I hear the Devils have been more successful than the Rangers in the last 15 years. I’m sure that has nothing to do with the stereotype of bandwagon jumping NY Yankees fans.

September 14th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
False narrative. Aside from 2008, their only good season, they started seeing declines in attendance every season from 2002 onward.
Great arena, dirt cheap, no business having an NHL team in that market.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
Complete opposite where I am in Central NJ. Half Flyers, 45% Rangers, 5% Devils.

What were you last drinking? So from your comments here, you’re pretty much drunk all the time, right?
September 14th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
The Islanders were 2nd to last in attendance last year. With all of the hockey teams nearby, should we contract them as well?
There is some feeling here that Houston should look to bring an NHL team here. I find it laughable, as this is just a terrible sports town.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
Make no mistake, if it weren’t for that god awful lease agreement, the Islanders would have moved years ago.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
Sounders are drawing more people than Mariners, right? I wonder if knowing what they know now, if Mariners would’ve fought against Sounders turning into a MLS team. Especially considering MLS season overlaps more with MLB than NBA does.

September 14th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
I mean, it’s possible that the 2 offices I work with are anomolies, but in the 8 years I’ve been here, it’s mostly Devils, and just as many Boston fans as Rangers fans.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Have people tried to check you into rehab? Not trying to be funny, it’s a serious question. Don’t drink yourself to death, sousedbergin. This place wouldn’t be as fun without you.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
They should put a second team in Chicago.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Those handful of people you work with might be the only people who actually go to Devils games other than Flyers, Rangers, and Pens fans who like to go to an away game where they can score tickets cheaply.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
The Sounders draw very well, way better than the M’s. I don’t think Sounders fans are really a threat to anyone, though, they don’t seem like football or baseball fans, a lot of them aren’t even soccer fans, they are strictly Sounders fans. I like all sports, even follow EPL, but I’m rare. They rest of my buddies fucking hate the Sounders and soccer. It’s sort of weird. I hate going to Sounders games because the douche ratio is through the roof.

Still an AHL team there, by the same name, that draws about 7,500 a night.

Nashville can get pretty humid for July/August, but by September, it’s pretty nice. Was 60′s when I teed off this morning for a quick 9 before work.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
Just looked at minor league attendance numbers. Despite Houston’s size its minor league team doesn’t draw as much as, say, the Providence Bruins.
Let’s bring an NHL team to Providence!
September 14th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
I understand the MLS hit on both sides, but these guys, they aren’t even MLS fans, I’m telling you, they are Sounders fans only. My cousin (the person forced to go with me to Sounders games) gets pissed because no one watches the game, they are too busy fucking off to care. The other team scored? Who cares? Lets sing and dance! Fucking annoying. I know the guy was an asshole, but I understand the “GO SOUNDERS GO” guy, I’ve been close to that point, and my cousin has actually almost gotten into fights with those morons. It’s not fun, but it’s all the soccer we have.

September 14th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
So minor league hockey (AHL) outdraws minor league basketball (NBDL) by a large margin, despite basketball being much more popular to play in the US, and more popular as a professional league. Is it just that hockey fans will go to any hockey game, but basketball fans will only go to NBA games? Am I missing a variable?
September 14th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
This is true, I could give a fuck about the rest of the league I only care about Toronto FC. Huge expat population here that just love soccer and mostly go for the atmosphere/giant Carlsberg pints/meat pies.
September 14th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
There’s a better minor league basketball option than NBDL. It’s called college basketball.
September 14th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
Am I missing a variable?
Can speak the quality of the NBDL but would it be better than NCAA? The American League (AHL) is probably the 4th best league in the world (after NHL, KHL, SEL).
September 14th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
Just played at the metro course near work, McCabe. Been playing like shit. Tried to fix a kink in my swing that caused me to fade sometimes, and now I’m screwed the fuck up.
September 14th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
College basketball, maybe? I know that if there were a minor league basketball team in Providence, it would play second fiddle to the Friars, while the P-Bruins really have little hockey competition.
September 14th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
Yes, it should be better than the NCAA. The players are different I guess though, in that a lot of NCAA players who don’t get to the NBA, go abroad. I’d think any NBDL team could beat any college team though, as pure conjecture?
September 14th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
Only thing I can think of the amount of time.
In certain towns, AHL hockey has been there for a very long time. It’s well entrenched. Towns like Glen Falls and Hershey have had AHL hockey for a very long time.
September 14th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
I’d go to a bad Big 5 game in Philly before I would even consider an NBDL game.

September 14th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
I don’t follow the D-League at all. Did they make any effort to putting teams in old CBA cities? When I was at RPI way back in the day the Albany Patroons were fairly big in the area. My sense was that they were bigger than the Adirondack Red Wings (I think that was their name) at the time.
September 14th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
AHL is pretty good hockey and it’s great to watch the future stars. Unless, of course, you’re the farm team for the Calgary Flames (like the Heat are) then there are no stars to watch.
September 14th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
Of course, the AAA Nashville Sounds can’t draw 5,000 a game but still want a new stadium downtown on the river. Seems like AAA baseball draws about the same as the AHL. It also probably depends what kind of city each minor league is in. But I think you all are right, in that college basketball is always around for anyone who wants to see non-NBA games, and it’s just not as attractive an option. You’ll know more players on a college team you can watch on TV than on an NBDL team.

September 14th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
I assume the AHL is a true farm team, where a decent percentage of players are good enough to play in NHL and will at some point.
In the NBDL, very few will make the jump. It’s just a shitty product.
September 14th, 2012 at 12:11 PM

I believe this. The leading scorer in the NBDL one year might never make an NBA team. Maybe for most players, by 19 they either can hack it or not, but it seems like a minor league system might be a good idea. I’d be all for a 20 year age limit in NBA, but 18 in the NBDL.
September 14th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
I’ve never been to a Bobcats game because I’m like 99% of people who have lived in Charlotte in the last ten years but man their arena is great for Charlotte Checkers games. I love minor league hockey.
That being said, no fucking way am I treating it as a replacement for the NHL.
