NFL Network Got Its Highest Ratings Ever for Bears-Packers Opener
According to Dan Masonsen of the NFL, last night’s game got the highest ratings ever for a NFL Network Thursday night broadcast at a 6.3 overnight, surpassing last year’s Harbaugh Bowl on Thanksgiving night.
This result stands in contrast to the Monday Night results for ESPN, which were at their lowest for the early time slot game, where Cincinnati-Baltimore drew a 8.1, compared to 10.3 for New England/Miami in 2011 and 10.5 for Baltimore/New York Jets in 2010.
Is this a positive sign, or just an indication that if your goal is to brag about week 1 relative rankings, you better have Chicago, Green Bay, New York, or New England in the game, and not Cincinnati? As noted in that Sports Media Watch article, the previous ESPN Monday Night opener low was also a Baltimore vs. Cincinnati game in 2007. Add in that it became a blowout by the late third quarter, after a full weekend of football and with one more game remaining, and those who were watching collectively took a break.
I think it still is encouraging for the NFL Network as they continue to battle with some cable carriers that they garnered a record number by also moving their Thursday night schedule up to early in the season. Every team has hope then, there are no perceived bad matchups yet. This first game, though, had two of the eight biggest ratings draws and the teams that the various networks fight over. The NFL certainly stacked the deck so that they could get these headlines. Next week, they have the Giants. We’ll see how much bump there is early in the season when we compare Cleveland-Baltimore in week 4, and Arizona-St. Louis in week 5.

Imagine what they’d get if they put the channel on all basic cable packages

The Wings signed Carlo Colaiacovo…. Nice off-season Kenny. Bring on the lockout.
September 14th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Holy shit. That has potential to be as bad as this primetime stinkbomb which I still consider to be the worst.
September 14th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
Should’ve put it on at three in the afternoon, would have crushed.

That pre-game show was disappointing and terrible. Don’t tell me 8 p.m. with a countdown clock and program on my guide, and then kickoff at 8:30 p.m. And stop cramming asshole talking heads down my throat with incessant and unnecessary yelling and over-reacting to each other’s comments. If I want to see that shit, I’ll flip to ESPN.
September 14th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
Does NFL Network still do that thing they did back in the day where you can go online and watch the studio crew describe what’s happening in the game if you don’t get the channel? That was one of the dumbest uses of technology in sport that I can remember.

How much increase has their been in the number of homes with NFLN?
September 14th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
Apparently Lehtonen is worth six million a year. MAN THESE OWNERS ARE SO POOR
September 14th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
This. Seems like there are even more commercials this year too.
September 14th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
*there ugh.

That pre-game show was disappointing and terrible.
HE’S A BEAST!!!!
Fucking hate. That was so bad. Who the fuck employees Micheal Irvin? All of it hate. I even hated Eisen last night. Fucking garbage. WHY ACT LIKE ESPN WHEN YOU ARE AN ALTERNATIVE TO ESPN? WHY DID MY ALL CAPS KEY GET STUCK.
As always, pregame shows are all shit.

Yes, sick of dealing with suburb retards in Leafs jerseys when I’m trying to not vomit on the subway again.
“Hey there fella, you mind telling me how to get to…..”
“IT IS A FUCKING U WITH A FUCKING LINE THROUGH IT IT’S NOT FUCKING MICRO NEUROLOGICAL SURGERY IF I EVER SEE YOU IN THE CITY AGAIN I WILL SLIT YOU THROAT AND FUCK YOUR WIDOW”
September 14th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
That “beast!” segment was far worse than anything ESPN has ever put together.
Also, I thought Time Warner was the only cable company left without NFLN?
September 14th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Yeah, that’s why I was disappointed. I turned it a few minutes after 8 p.m. because I thought it was kickoff. Saw it wasn’t, decided to watch the pre-game in hopes it’d be something different than the rest of them. It wasn’t. I flipped back and forth about 15 times up until 8:30 when the actual kickoff happened. Just awful all around.

When I checked twitter last night, I couldn’t believe how many people were forced at gunpoint to watch NFLN’s pregame show. I felt sorry for them.
September 14th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
Did Colaiacovo get injured while actually signing his name? It’s entirely possible with him.
September 14th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
i don’t know how NYers feel about bloomberg but this quote, about the sugary beverage ban in NY that he has fought for, is badass. money=power
Asked whether he was concerned about “well-funded” opposition from an industry with deep pockets, Bloomberg, a billionaire emerging as a major philanthropist on public health issues, suggested he wouldn’t be outgunned.
“I don’t know it’s well-funded. I’ve just spent roughly $650 million of my own money to try to stop the scourge of tobacco, and I’m looking for another cause. How much were they spending, again?” he said.

The Beast was a solid Krakken-based mini series starring Gil Grissom, though.

Let me refresh your memory about what Twitter is for. It’s for complaining about things and begging celebrities for retweets.
September 14th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
Maybe, but for Comcast at least, it doesnt come on their basic digital package. You either have to buy the sports package or upgrade to a high tier. I have a feeling they would want to be on every package like ESPN.
September 14th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Is there any way to do analysis on if it just seems like the quality of Thursday night games is lower than average or if it’s a real thing? Battered bodies and lack of normal prep time doesn’t appear to lend itself to great gameplay

Small market fatigue. I’d say contraction is in order.
September 14th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
MNF: Cincy doesn’t bring in any casual fans, Balto may bring a few.
NFLN: Chicago brings, while Chicago and casual fans, and Green Bay brings nothing but casual fans.
September 14th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Pre-game shows are not even interesting enough to complain about on twitter, let alone watch for getting information.
September 14th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Imagine if it starred Stu Grimson.
September 14th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
Every year, I have to search to find what channel NFLN is on. I always forget.

September 14th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
Is that Beyonce thing real? Gotta find that out before I send it to my phone.
September 14th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
Re half-time and post-game shows. Why do they have barely literate ex-players read highlights? Bring in a couple broadcast professioanls to do the voiceover on highlights. Jocks should be there for quick analysis.

Can anyone confirm if Jay Cutler is a relative of JMac? He’s going all in on defending him on Twitter today. LEAVE JAY ALONE!

This has always been my biggest complaint about the NFL, but it seems like they have gotten completely out of control this year. I fucking HATE when they go to commercial after a score, then we get an inevitable touchback, and then they go right back to commercial. What the fuck?!
September 14th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Of course it’s real, it’s on the interwebs.
September 14th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Serious question: Why do you follow JMac?
September 14th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
gambling advice.
September 14th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
It’s a vicious cycle. I follow him, he inevitably annoys me enough that I unfollow, then I follow again just to follow links to posts.

That game was a shitshow, outside of the cool fake field goal by Green Bay.
Broccoli Beef, if you’re around, I’m not sure that putting in James Jones was the best option.
September 14th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
Does he have a future riding on the team? Then he’s gonna be an apologist.

Well done, sir.
When I checked twitter last night, I couldn’t believe how many people were forced at gunpoint to watch NFLN’s pregame show.
The game was advertised to start at 7:00 cst. So that is when I turned it on. I saw the game hadn’t started yet and did some other things. Came back downstairs and saw the beast thing. I was bewildered. I changed the channel and ended up missing the first series.
September 14th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
Is that Beyonce gif SFW?
September 14th, 2012 at 10:58 AM

That it’d go viral and Beyonce would be trending on the web for the first time since her surrogate had her child and she could quit pretending she was pregnant.

Not likely. But then again, you could be working for Bill Clinton for all we know.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
The only thing I saw in the pre-game was Cee-lo Green’s horrific version of Blitzkrieg Bop. Man that was terrible
September 14th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
Even I have to admit those are nice.
Oh H-Town…
September 14th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
Weird. When I set my fantasy roster yesterday, Yahoo! said the game started at 8:20 Eastern. I assume ESPN said the same. So I tuned in a few minutes after that.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
They should fill the pregame shows with fantasy football features and off the cuff fangled stats. This would make for an awesome pregame show.
September 14th, 2012 at 11:18 AM

I was going by what the cable box said.
September 14th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
A football podcast said that in the dead time between plays, they analyze what happened in the play from a scouting perspective. ESPN Dallas has a segment called “Film don’t lie” they have an ex-scout on to talk about who really did well in the game. Someone like that in the Broadcast booth as opposed to Tony Siragusa would be a plus
September 14th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
They have a name for that. It’s called TimMcCarveroveranalyzingeverypitch.com
