The non-traditional media star: Simmons

Would’ve preferred someone more X and O – say Jeff Van Gundy. JVG is such a nerd, but a great mind, compared to Stan, who is also a great mind but is much more outgoing and affable that I think the chemistry would’ve been great…Of course then we’d have individuals on set who understood the games they were breaking down…Seems to be a no-no for NBA telecasts.

Does it bother anybody else that Wilbon refers to Magic as “Earvin”? What a pretentious assclown. 10-years ago I liked him and hated Kornheiser, now it’s completely reversed.

the real problem of the show — Wilbon.

I would agree he is the main problem, but Magic has to go too. I like Der Kaiser’s idea of Russillo as the host, and then Simmons and SVG could work. It’s almost impossible to even imagine ESPN doing something like that though.

That show will ultimately be decided by the production. Not the technical production but by the show runner that decides the topics, finds out who will say what, etc.

If they try to just have a loose dialogue it will fail severely. Magic is a star-player apologist. Stan has good insight but will have bad delivery and Wilbon thinks he has more credibility than he does. Simmons will be flabbergasted and try to nuke Magic on facts and such, and he sounds terrible. Plus Magic is the name and you cant have your name getting worked over the coals on a repeated basis.

Perhaps Simmons can get a dead smoker’s voicebox inserted to make him sound like he hit puberty.

Simmons & Stan Van def a step up, but that doesn’t address the real problem of the show — Wilbon. As long as he’s still there, it will continue to be unwatchable.

The problem isn’t that Wilbon loves him some Wilbon, it’s that Wilbon loves himself some Magic. The laziest, ill-informed, opinions offered by Magic goes unchecked by everyone else on that panel. Wilbon hangs on to Magic’s words like a pre-teen hangs on the handkerchief thrown by Bieber at his concert.

Wilbon will be a drain on that show. They should hire a real host and then they could have something.

I don’t get why they don’t model it after Gameday, by far ESPN’s best pregame show. If Wilbon plays the Fowler role (which I’m skeptical of since he loves himself some Wilbon) then it could be good. But they need that host – I don’t like the PTI rotation idea very much.

I watch as little of this show as possible, since it’s terrible, but my memory was that Magic was not very good. Is that still true?

Ryen Russillo, Bill Simmons, and Bill Walton. I’d watch that show. Russillo is very knowledgeable when it comes to NBA. Can be a bit full of himself, but I think him and Simmons would have good back and forths.
