College Football 2012 Picks: Week Three
We bounced back with a 5-1 week last week, bringing our record for the season against the spread to 7-5. Here is who we like for week three.
Notre Dame (+6) at Michigan State: Notre Dame finished better than Michigan State in SRS the past two seasons (Sparty played a weaker schedule). The Irish beat Michigan State down in South Bend last year and should have beaten them in East Lansing the year before. Nine of the last 12 between these teams have been decided by one score or less. Both run defenses should cancel each other out. We have seen nothing from Andrew Maxwell to trust him more than Everett Golson. We’ll take the six points.
Connecticut (-2.5) at Maryland: Connecticut has a very strong defense, that allowed just 2.69 yards per play against UMass and N.C. State. Maryland, with an inexperienced quarterback, turned the ball over eight times in its first two games, against William and Mary and Temple. The Huskies will definitely be up for this one. Not a huge win, but they cover the 2.5 points.
Pittsburgh (+10.5) vs. Virginia Tech: I know. Hear me out. The Hokies are a big name team. Pitt lost to an FCS team and looked horrifying against Cincinnati. The money is pouring in on VaTech and the line dropped by 1.5. Despite this, the line went even lower to entice more money. Virginia Tech has not shown it can score against an FBS opponent. Statistically, Pitt should have been in that game against Cincinnati. The Panthers look better after a long week to regroup and keep it low-scoring and close.
Utah (+4) vs. BYU: Utah comes home after a tough rivalry loss on the road, but we have to accept the fact Utah State might just be good. Jordan Wynn is finished, but John Hays, a senior with extensive starting experience last year, should not be so much of a drop off. Utah has a far better defensive front than BYU, playing Washington State and Weber State, have seen. We’ll take the Utes at home, with the points.
Houston (+17) at UCLA: Houston rebounded after their week one debacle. They lost to a decent Louisiana Tech team 56-49, but gained nearly 700 total yards and lost because of penalties and turnovers. UCLA has an explosive offense, but we’re not sold their defense can shut down Houston. The Bruins win, but the Cougars aren’t embarrassed.
Miami of BROhio (+21) at Boise State: Boise State was spirited against Michigan State, but their offense showed about the level of stink expected with so few returning starters. They faced a good/great defense but Joe Southwick completed less than 50 percent of his passes. They could not manage more than 10 yards from a running back. What kept it close was self-inflicted turnovers and penalties by the Spartans. Whatever rhythm gained will have been lost on the bye week. Boise may end up being good, but they have shown nothing to suggest they can blow teams away yet.

Don’t forget we LOVE beating Va Tech when they are highly ranked.
Of course, I don’t think Larry Fitzgerald is walking through that door.

but the Cougars aren’t embarrassed.
0-3 is pretty embarrassing no matter how well you how up in two games if the other game was an almost 20 point loss to a team that’s new to FBS.

With your recent spate of quality posts followed by picking Pitt this weekend, I feel the ice between us melting, Duffy.

September 13th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
Well at least you stepped out on a ledge and picked a bunch a games no one gives a shit about.
September 13th, 2012 at 3:35 PM
Gotta feed the monkey.
September 13th, 2012 at 3:35 PM
Tino Sunseri is so bad, Vlad. I’d like to see them with a decent QB and see what happens.

You and your fucking easterners and your sorry excuse for BBQ….

I asked this in Lisk’s post about SRS a couple weeks ago, but I still don’t understand how this is relevant to a game between these two teams this season. Unless it was just meant as an interesting note about the perceived quality of the teams over the last two seasons.

**COUGH** **COUGH**

Keep flipflopping on VTech, but Pitt looked awful against Cincy, and I assume was even worse against Youngstown. I always try to find the worst teams early and fade. Even though I’m hesitant with VTech, I’ll fade Pitt until they show otherwise. Also, fading Army again for the umpteenth year in a row. Duffy, I thought you would take Wake getting +28 against FSU. Seems like a decent bet with the points.
September 13th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
Is it just me or does Tino Sunseri not look like he belongs on the cast of Jersey Shore?
September 13th, 2012 at 3:39 PM
Everyone’s got one of those and it doen’t change the fact that Ann Arbor is a Whore.
September 13th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
There are Pitt football billboards all over town featuring individual players talking about how proud they are to play for Pitt and bullshit like that. I presume they’re either paid actors or just liars.
September 13th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
I just want to load them all up in a scissor lift on a windy day and shoot them in the face with a high powered rifle.
September 13th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
The perception is that Michigan State was much better than Notre Dame the past two seasons. The reality is that Notre Dame was probably just as good, but won fewer games playing a significantly harder schedule.
September 13th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
Lisk could tell us if it’s more relevant than a one or two game sample size from this season. It’s possible, I suppose.
September 13th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
Is it just me or does Tino Sunseri not look like he belongs on the cast of Jersey Shore?
Yup, every young Italian looks like that, and all the older ones look like wise guys.
/not Italian
//from Jersey
///ay, go fuck yourself.
September 13th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
For the last decade or so, Wake has played FSU tough – only covered +28 once since 2002, twice since 1998.
September 13th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
Compromise: they both suck.
September 13th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
What’s the deal with Rushel Shell? Didn’t he get in some trouble?
September 13th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
Dammit the Orioles couldn’t hold the lead
September 13th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
Vegas pays the same, no matter who cares about the game or doesn’t.
September 13th, 2012 at 3:47 PM
Shell was suspended for the YSU game, didn’t see him @ Cincy, either.
September 13th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
NM, Shell played aginst Cincy.
September 13th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
Sure but I’m asking why that’s relevant to this a game between those two teams in this particular season.
Is there an SRS poll already for this season? If so I would assume that ranking is a better predictor for this week’s game than their final position from the last two seasons, at least in theory.
September 13th, 2012 at 3:49 PM
Is Arkansas really that bad or is La Monroe headed for an undefeated season?
September 13th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
/I still blame Wanny
//His defense gave up 48 points to Mark Freakin’ Sanchez!!
September 13th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
Yeah, replacement refs arent that bad….
September 13th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
Dammit the Orioles couldn’t hold the lead
Hard to question Buck this season but I would’ve had O’Day start the 8th. Understand avoiding Pedro in a pressure spot but a lot to ask of Wei-Yin.
/I know, I know Buck has forgotten more about baseball than I’ll ever know
September 13th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
It’s not relevant, but Duffy takes shots at Sparty every week. He’s a little sour when it comes to Michigan State.
September 13th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
I can’t link to it because for some reason the site won’t publish any comment I make that links to another comment, but in Monday’s roundup I asked if anyone had done a roundup of the worst calls made by the scabs and Hawkeye said if any site did it, it would be Tim Burke on Deadspin, and sure enough.
/fix your site
//or be more transparent with the intentional gatekeeping you do, knobs
September 13th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
Sparty better take care of business this weekend. So Notre Dame can fuck Michigan up next week.
September 13th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
Yeah, at least Johnson got out of the jam though. Buck is usually so good with the bullpen, but every now and then he’ll leave someone in too long (Strop last week, Chen today).
September 13th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
I agree with all of this.
September 13th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
I picked them to cover first week and they fucked me. Like their defense. Really not sold on every offensive player they have besides Bell.
September 13th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
To be fair, making the argument that someone is worse than Notre Dame is a pretty goddamn crafty burn and I’m a Notre Dame fan.
September 13th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
Too much uncertainty for me. No read on FSU yet as they haven’t faced a real team. Wake’s offense is turrible.
September 13th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
The offensive line was missing two starters. They’re coming back soon. That will help Maxwell. I think he’ll be just fine.
September 13th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
Sweet Jesus, Wake beat Carolina last week? If you’re gonna cheat at least get some decent players.
September 13th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
I said a few weeks ago Michigan finishes September 2-2.
September 13th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
He still can’t get over that Kirk Cousins ruined 1 particular Saturday each October for 3 straight years, and is even more impressive off-the-field.
September 13th, 2012 at 4:10 PM
O’s-Rays going to extras at Camden
September 13th, 2012 at 4:12 PM
Nice pick by Machado off of Upton’s grounder. Machado seems to make a big play a day.
September 13th, 2012 at 4:15 PM
Arkansas is going to beat Alabama.
September 13th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
Nice pick by Machado off of Upton’s grounder. Machado seems to make a big play a day.
I know he still isn’t really there offensively but the thought of him there in mid-May and the elimination of the 89 combined errors by Betemit/Reynolds there…..
September 13th, 2012 at 4:30 PM
Would have been nice. It would also be nice if Brian Roberts, Nick Markakis and Nolan Reimold didn’t miss most of the season with injuries. The lineup right now in the 11th is atrocious. Teagarden, Ford, McLouth, Chavez. Yikes.
