Wait, wait, wait: you’re telling me that in an election featuring a black guy running against a party almost exclusively dominated by rich white people and trailer-dwelling white people, that race will be an issue? Huh.
The 9/11 link was great.
September 11th, 2012 at 8:14 AM
Let’s not get crazy. The defense did look a lot better. Martin looked good. Anything at this point is better than Ra.
September 11th, 2012 at 8:15 AM
Also, that’s a shame about the Volt. Really like that car. The look, the technology, everything. I’m a bit confused about how the car loses $49K yet is considered overpriced, too.

Should look at the Nissan Leaf. 100% electric, no gas, zero emissions and priced under $40k. Best fully produced electric vehicle out there.

Not sure I follow that logic, but OK.
September 11th, 2012 at 8:28 AM
Since a large amount of our electricity is generated by burning coal, electric cars are not really zero emissions.

Prob would have gotten rid of or stifled the Unions. Want to know why you’re paying around $31,000 for the price a new car? Avg hourly wage of the person working the assembly line at the Automaker Big 3 (includes benefits) is around $73. Nice chunk of change.

drug smugglers are now using submarines? …
now?
wasn’t this in a crappy timothy dalton bond movie in the 80s?
September 11th, 2012 at 8:39 AM
I’m not really a huge fan of union workers losing the salaries that allow them to pay bills and enjoy the middle class. Reform the benefits packages and work out a new contract? OK. But I’m not a fan of shutting down an entire company to bust unions.
Also, why are benefits only factored into salary numbers when unions are involved?
September 11th, 2012 at 8:40 AM
Wait, wait, wait: you’re telling me that in an election featuring a black guy running against a party almost exclusively dominated by rich white people and trailer-dwelling white people, that race will be an issue? Huh.
Good to know that ignorant name-calling and stereotyping isn’t exclusive to only one political party and one race.
September 11th, 2012 at 8:42 AM
No we’re telling you any criticism of a poor black president will be slouched off as racism by a willing accomplice fawning in his pocket media

September 11th, 2012 at 8:45 AM
Sure they are. The cars themselves emit nothing. If you consider the entire lifecycle of generating the energy, then yeah, there are emissions, but then you also get to add a lot more to the gasoline/diesel side of the coin as well.
Also,

September 11th, 2012 at 8:45 AM
If you would really like to give incentives to workers and build pride in their work, companies should look into paying workers flat-rate. Unions in the Automakers Industry took this away from the workers.

I doubt the autoworkers making what they do would characterize the unions as taking anything away. Rather, they’d view them as the sole reason they’re able to afford a house and send their kids to college.
September 11th, 2012 at 8:49 AM
Meanwhile, lost in the euphoria of our Bengals asskicking is the fact that we will struggle getting to QB’s and will not be a top 5 run defense without Suggs and J Johnson. But knowing the Ravens I predict one of our young defenders(Kruger,McPhee,Upshaw,A Jones)at some point this season becoming a big time player

You do realize what would have happened to the already fragile economy had this happened, right? Looks past the auto manufacturers and at the Tier I,II & III suppliers. What would have happened to those companies (and employees) had they auto manufacturers bankrupted?
September 11th, 2012 at 8:51 AM
“President N-bomb”
Holy mother of god – I swear I’ve never heard that. And I live in GA. I often think the parts of the northeast and mid-atlantic are more racist than us slave owners in the south.
September 11th, 2012 at 8:51 AM
If they are really making $73 and hour then they could make a lot of people in the south very happy if they paid them half that and with medical insurance.
September 11th, 2012 at 8:51 AM
When her show tanks on Fox this Fall —and I’d wager heavily that it will— I think that statement will be shown to be quite inaccurate.
September 11th, 2012 at 8:52 AM
Based on that knowledge they should just send them to an automotive trade school.
September 11th, 2012 at 8:53 AM

Except then we would have been in full-on depression. Million+ more people with auto related jobs out of work, plus the ripple effect on those communities from there.
September 11th, 2012 at 8:53 AM
I just don’t get this whole “being able to send their kids to college” bullshit. My parents had 4 kids, 3 of them went to college and guess what? Not one dime from parents. We all got student loans from the PA state (I even got an personal educational loan out of South Dakota or something, but I digress) and we paid them back during the 10-15 years out of school.
Worked during college and paid my rent with that money. Kids today suck and believe parents should pay or give them every-focking thing. Work for it!
September 11th, 2012 at 8:55 AM
There is no way you haven’t run this same line at least 5 times in the history of the site. (Not a criticism. Just seems like a story you’d really enjoy and, well, it’s an old tactic.)
September 11th, 2012 at 8:56 AM
Yep.
September 11th, 2012 at 8:56 AM
I agree but I also must add that the opportunities aren’t there like they were in your time.
September 11th, 2012 at 8:56 AM
Completely ruined that link. Try this.
September 11th, 2012 at 8:56 AM
Yeah, it’s nuts. Granted, there’s usually alcohol involved. But that and variations on the theme are spouted constantly. And I live in a relatively major Central PA area (Harrisburg). I’m certainly not saying it’s commonplace, but there’s very little actual policy critiques (those that are raised are frequently lies ripped from a chain email).
TexasFan: they’re not making $73/hour. That number includes benefits, pensions, etc. When the right wants to criticize the pay for unions, teachers, and government workers, they often use a number that includes EVERYTHING, not just salary, which is the standard metric for everyone else.
Now, that’s still probably too high for unskilled labor. But these guys aren’t bringing home three grand a week.
September 11th, 2012 at 8:57 AM

September 11th, 2012 at 9:00 AM
I’m 30, and I did the same. But let’s not pretend that the game hasn’t got more fierce in the last 5-7 years. The cost of a kid going to a decent college without help is astronomical. We all talk about national debt and the need to cut back to save America for our children (or something), yet we don’t give a shit about our kids being saddled with six-figure debt just to go to school.
September 11th, 2012 at 9:01 AM
Jason, no mention of the latest UNC scandal? Since there are so many “latest” stories coming out of Chapel Hill, I’m referring to the one involving Tyler Hansbrough’s mom.
September 11th, 2012 at 9:01 AM
I live in Saginaw MI which has a large black and Democratic population. Does that mean I get to make idiotic stereotypes about them under the guise of “writing what I see”?
September 11th, 2012 at 9:01 AM
Since that article on rampant racism in the republican party chooses to leave out a good number of historical FACTS, I figured I would leave this here. Shocking, I know, that the democrats have a worse track-record with racism.

September 11th, 2012 at 9:04 AM
Oh shit, I forgot all about them?!? What ever would they have done, if faced with adversity?! I guess they could have asked the government who they should turn to or who would ever want to buy their parts. Surely they couldn’t come up with a single idea on their own. You’re right, thank goodness we didnt let them wander in the wilderness.

I think the NCAA has no problem with guns.

Right now, in my opinion, college is over-rated. Basically a free-for-all party for 4-5 years, to go and “explore” yourself under the guise of “educational pursuit”. My suggestion? Hit a technical/two-year college, bust your ass studying and get hired by employers/companies that come looking for your best students.
College? You gotta study/grind it out for 4-5 years and then you got to sell yourself in a market that sucks.

I figured I would leave this here.
That’s a pretty good read, and I was just about to write about some of those points in the article. Albert Gore, Strom Thurmond, Fulbright (who, ironically Bill Clinton, champion of the minorties wears as a badge of honor) and Robert Byrd are some of the worst.
September 11th, 2012 at 9:11 AM
Based on that knowledge they should just send them to an automotive trade school.
Some truth to that.
I have 2 Nephews, one went to college and has a civil engineering degree and is working in his dad’s fragile business and living at home. The other went to Ford diesel mech school and just bought a house. The garage he works in has more work than they have mechanics to supply – and that’s just the regular maintenance part of the shop.
September 11th, 2012 at 9:11 AM
We’ve had both Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton shit-stirring here in the last few weeks. Sometimes the funny just writes itself.
September 11th, 2012 at 9:13 AM
Regarding Psycho-T’s mom: you knew that if you shook enough trees at UNC (or ANY other college EVER) that stuff like this would fall out. If you critically read the article, there is very little – if any – evidence that this is a basketball/football impropriety issue, and more of a “pay for your own travel” issue. People get fired/reprimanded every single day over stuff like this. It’s not a good look for UNC, but I would venture to say it is far from out of the ordinary at major colleges and state/federal employers.
September 11th, 2012 at 9:14 AM
Did they cut quickly to commercial or stay “live” and continue showing it? I remember the PPV where Owen Hart fell from the rafters, hit the turnbuckle, and died in the ring…but they never showed any of it and awkwardly went off-the-air completely to avoid bringing up what happened as much as possible.

Good thing we don’t have a crumbling infrastructure that could use some minds like that to fix…but that would cost money, and government bad, so cross your fingers driving across that next bridge and hope for the best

This is why I really hate Vince Russo for being the primary cultivator of the “Everything is a work except for what you’re watching RIGHT NOW! THIS IS FOR REAL, BRAH!” storyline gimmick.

I, too, live in Georgia and have heard it many times. I also heard it when I lived in Indiana before moving here. Racists are all over.
GM denies losing 49K, but acknowledges it is losing money on the vehicle.
September 11th, 2012 at 9:17 AM
Whether it’s autoworkers, teachers or NFL referees, many anti-labor people are willing to accept workers that are “just good enough” rather than the best of the best. The only exception is if a company has a diversity hiring policy, then it’s totes unfair.
September 11th, 2012 at 9:17 AM
I just shake my head when either party teeters on the edge of racism. Mainly, its the flapping heads in the mainstream media who gin up a lot of these conversations, but it is really damn hard to not talk about race in politics when all you ever talk about is race in politics. Pretty sure Mr. Obama was going around in 2008 warning people that the Repubs would talk about his funny last name, and would say “and he’s black”. Coincidentally, none of that happened, but it didn’t stop the jerk from preemptively crying fowl by saying “they are going to be racist! Help, they are going to do it! Better shame them now; why wait until it actually happens?!”

consider this
1. Montreal, site of the screwjob, and Bret Hart was in attendance. (still believe this was a work)
2. Lawler pulled off one of the greatest works ever with Andy Kaufman
3. This is a company that had Shawn Michaels, its biggest star, collapse in the ring, commentary went silent, people were crying, he had just been beaten up in real life, took a shot to the head…
4. Lawler was the old man thrust into a “feud” with CM Punk, the biggest star who they have desperately tried to put heat on.
5. They continued the show, which was odd.
6. This is a company that once had someone simulate screwing a corpse

half of them tied to GM did go out of business, as GM didnt do shit for a year while waiting on the bailout. would not have really done anything more to the economy than was already done. the recession is based on mortgages and the stuff tied to them, not some shit automakers who refuse to make a decent product. they were going down regardless of the recession.

Except then we would have been in full-on depression. Million+ more people with auto related jobs out of work, plus the ripple effect on those communities from there.
I’m not sure I believe this would be the result. If the demand for vehicles is there, then those who supply the parts will still have to meet that demand, just not with GM. I think the point of GM: SHUT IT DOWN! is that it would loosen the grip of the unions on a large manufacturer and we all would hope that the new resulting company is leaner and more efficient. And yes, people would lose jobs. But we need to get away from the idea that “hey, I want to play a game of hearts in the breakroom so throw a wrench in the assembly line”.
I, personally, will never buy another GM product. Ever. And I was born and raised in a GM household.

It is just like what happened when Roy was running KU’s athletic department. Deflect all negative attention to areas other than the basketball team when needed. When you have Lt. McIntyre breathing down your neck, disposing of a couple fundraisers is a no-brainer.

I’ll be staying away from Yahoo until this story gets buried from the front page:
“After his suicidal owner laid down on train tracks, his faithful dog fought to pull him away.”

Quintana’s start yesterday after the month he’s had is one of the greater what the fuck moments of the season
Can’t imagine having to watch that butchery in the field all season too, you have my sympathies

Here ya go:
Obama told them: “What they’re going to try to do is make you scared of me. You know, he’s not patriotic enough. He’s got a funny name. You know, he doesn’t look like all those other presidents on those dollar bills, you know. He’s risky.”

I remember being in a WWE chatroom during the PPV when Owen Hart died. Between the clogged dial-up connection, I was able to see the most hilarious and insulting screen name of all time – BlazerPancake.

51 degrees when I woke up, had to wear a sweatshirt for my run, and this was the first day since the spring that I didn’t have to turn on my AC driving to work. Just an absolutely beautiful morning
Same here. Opened door when I first woke up and did not want to go (hate cold weather) but it’s really enjoyable once you get a sweat going.
September 11th, 2012 at 9:35 AM
Was watching “Border Wars”, and they were talking about Mexican drug cartels using home made planes to ferry drug across the border. They’re kind of like drones, they said.
Olivia Munn is obviously the most blatant example of this. I still can’t believe she hoodwinked Jon Stewart to give her a correspondent spot on The Daily Show. What a disaster that was. But can Kristen Bell be also included on this list?
September 11th, 2012 at 9:36 AM
BYYYAAAHHHHHH
September 11th, 2012 at 9:36 AM
No, not the public and credible hiring of her. All of that was above-board, and she was totally qualified for that job. What i was saying that if you turn over enough rocks in these institutions, you most surely will find stuff you wish you hadn’t. It’s the nature of these places where the funding outpaces the opportunity. Of course they can afford to fly her around, but she has to make damn sure its legit. However, that doesn’t have anything to do with athletics, other than the fact that she attended some games. I am pretty sure Roy didn’t promise her free plane rides to her sons game for JUST her senior year. Remember, this is a divorced mother who took the job in CH during Tyler’s senior year. If she wanted to game the system, shouldn’t she have been hired before he got there or maybe his freshman year? This smells of coincidence, and nothing more.
September 11th, 2012 at 9:36 AM
Pretty sure Mr. Obama was going around in 2008 warning people that the Repubs would talk about his funny last name, and would say “and he’s black”. Coincidentally, none of that happened,
Really? They didn’t? Palin and Co. Consistently used his middle name to remind the base how “different” he was.
Get a new argument cause this one is pretty weak dude.
September 11th, 2012 at 9:37 AM

White Man’s Burden. Great movie. Or greatest movie.
September 11th, 2012 at 9:38 AM
That was just as misguided, because they really shouldn’t have aired ANYTHING until they knew what actually happened. Instead they ended up airing a tribute to a guy who killed his family. I know its easy to see it that way after the fact, but really.. their own stubbornness got in the way there. USA (or TNN, I don’t remember) could have agreed to run a clip show or something to fill the time for the week, I don’t think that’s unreasonable to assume.
September 11th, 2012 at 9:42 AM
Really? Obama’s own people said it was an incredibly stupid comment that he made. He knew better than to say it, and his staff said as much. Nice try.
You said it became a thing, and I am basically saying that not that many people noticed or cared or passed judgement on it. Neither one of us are citing numbers or a national poll or tons of op-eds written on it, so it would appear that while it was mentioned, it wasn’t a cornerstone of the debate.
September 11th, 2012 at 9:44 AM

September 11th, 2012 at 9:44 AM
The only exception is if a company has a diversity hiring policy, then it’s totes unfair.
The whole diversity thing is comical to me. Most big companies have a CDO – chief diversity officer. Their job is to mostly make sure that they hire enough gay people so they participate in the all of the local community’s gay events. And pester the non-gay people in the company with constant reminders there are gay people working with and around you.
/and for fabulous office decorating ideas and a good softball team
September 11th, 2012 at 9:45 AM
You talk about gay people a lot

Got free drinks at a brewery (Mill St) for six hours last night, last memory is dropping a pipe full of weed into a fence post of a lawn balling court. Have a huge meeting today and am basically dressed as a satire of an adult.
If you vote for the party that obstructed the economy on the idea that they will fix the economy you are a fucking retard.

September 11th, 2012 at 9:54 AM
All the employees at a company I worked for had to go through “diversity sensitivity training” or some such nonsense. I quit paying attention after the instructor opened with an anecdotal tale with the moral being “Southerners are racists.”

Problem I have with it is that the author goes all the way back to Lincoln’s day; it’s way too obvious that the Republican Party of the 1860s is not the Republican Party of today. Not even close.

I know for certain that Home Depot and CSC each have a Chief Diversity Officer.
Is that your question?

I think every Fortune 500 company had these in the late 90′s. God, how I miss the role-playing skits that did nothing more than raise the awareness of the plight of how bad my coworkers were at acting.

Personally I’d think someone who takes as much of an interest in children’s baseball as squawkbox was a bit on the Sandusky spectrum.

You do realize what would have happened to the already fragile economy had this happened, right? Looks past the auto manufacturers and at the Tier I,II & III suppliers. What would have happened to those companies (and employees) had they auto manufacturers bankrupted?
Except then we would have been in full-on depression. Million+ more people with auto related jobs out of work, plus the ripple effect on those communities from there.
There are several different types of bankruptcy. GM would not have liquidated (SHUT IT DOWN), but would have restructered under the protection of the bankruptcy courts. Under a restructure plan, GM would continue in business, keep manufacturing cars, paying employees and purchasing from down-stream vendors. There would not have been a cataclysmic effect on the economy.
GM’s biggest problem is the unsustainable legacy costs associated with the defined benefit pension plans for RETIRED workers. These contracts were negotiated at a time when GM assumed exponential growth into the foreseeable future. Unfortunately times changed and the contracts are now unsustainable. Bankruptcy would have allowed these contracts to be renegotiated to reflect the current business model.
If GM could have done something about unsustainable legacy costs through a bankrutpcy reorganization, they would have emerged a stronger more competitive company.
As it is now, many experts are predicting that GM will require another bailout and/or still be faced with the prospects of bankruptcy reorganization.

Thanks, Barrack HUSSEIN Obama, Kenyan-born closet Muslim extremist, was 100 percent correct in his view.
I’ll never forget McCain actually having to correct some old nutjob at a rally who screamed that Obama was a Muslim.
September 11th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Obama’s a muslim? Damn, that sucks.
September 11th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
No, he’s a Muslim extremest. Please get it right.
Interesting poll out today that shows 38 percent of white Southern voters won’t vote for Willard because of his wealth and religion.
September 11th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
Interesting thing about contracts is we should cancel the benefits afforded retired autoworkers, but continue with the contractually-obligated 7 figure bonuses of the AIG crooks.
September 11th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
GM will require another bailout and/or still be faced with the prospects of bankruptcy reorganization.
So, per GM company policy, all workers will be transported to their respective polling places and instructed to vote for Obama. All while still being paid their union wage. I see how this works.
September 11th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
Someone asked why Areop Enap/Zeus would let sooo many people die and go to hell before having the chance of hearing the true message. As there were all cast directly to hell before Mormonism the Mormon response was to pray for them. So they went searching for lists of dead people, thankfully Hitler had a rather long list. Eventually under pressure from Jewish groups Mormons stopped having public prayer meetings trying to get holocaust victims out of hell and into Mormon heaven. Goofy fucking bastards.
September 11th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
Amazing that this dichotomy is rarely pointed out. Every benefit, sick day, and pension dollar is accounted for in order to make teachers and union workers look like lazy overpaid assholes, but Wall St. crooks making billions on loopholes and illegal deals then taking bailouts to cover their mistakes are American job creators that must be honored as true patriots.
September 11th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
Had GM & Chrysler gone under, approximately 60-70% of the US auto supply chain would have collaped, hundreds to thousands of dealers would be wiped out, and all of the other major auto manufacteurs would have been in deep shit (Ford would have gone to Ch. 11 by early 2010). But yes, lets SHUT IT DOWN regarding GM & Chrysler. Economists estimated appx. 3 million jobs would have gone within 6 months of a GM/Chrysler had they not been bailed out.

Kind of like newspapers, right? Changing and developing economy and all that, you know.
I’ll buy my next car at Costco. Or from Jose Eduardo in downtown Norcross.

Who cares about Bain, or religion, race or any of that bullshit.
The election is this: do you think austerity will benefit the economy?
If yes vote Mitt, if no vote Obama. The rests is just folly (unless you are a woman).
September 11th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
No.
And comparing Bell to Munn is worthy of a bannin’.

Had GM & Chrysler gone under, approximately 60-70% of the US auto supply chain would have collaped, hundreds to thousands of dealers would be wiped out, and all of the other major auto manufacteurs would have been in deep shit
Again, this assumes a Chapter 7 liquidation which would have been highly unlikely. The realty is GM would have filed a pre-packaged Chapter 11 and been out of bankruptcy in like 6 to 9 months without missing a day of production.
Interesting thing about contracts is we should cancel the benefits afforded retired autoworkers, but continue with the contractually-obligated 7 figure bonuses of the AIG crooks.
Absolutely correct! Renegotiating the contracts is unfair. But, as a factual matter, GM’s biggest problem are its legacy costs and the current business model cannot sustain the obligation. It leaves you with two options – mantis’ scenario in which GM gets shut down with all the attendant disruption, or if you believe GM is “too big to fail”, then you have to do something about the legacy costs – and a Chapter 11 is the perfect vehicle for this.
The bailout, unfortunately, is not a solution – it just kicks the problem down the road for a few years.
September 11th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
Lack of Institutional Control gets it.
September 11th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
isn’t that kind of a solution in and of itself though? if the legacy costs are the concern, the bailout lets them remain financially sound while those collecting those unwieldy pensions start to die off. this way, each side takes a little bit of a hit, and taxpayers help out other taxpayers, rather than one side being forced to go to the chopping block by themselves.
September 11th, 2012 at 11:23 AM

Theoretically yes. But, the bailout won’t support GM long enough to wipe out enough of the legacy costs. Its only been a couple years since the bailout and people are already predicting doom and gloom again for GM.
Also, in Chapter 11, the negotiation of legacy entitlement contracts is actually a negotiation. If the unions don’t want to concede, they can scuttle (to some extent) the reorganization plan. Of course with that comes the threat of a conversion to a Chapter 7 in which they would basically lose everything once the company is liquidated, i.e. the mantis scenario.
September 11th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
so what you’re saying is, GM should put me on retainer to “solve” the legacy costs. I ACCEPT.
good info, but it left me with a bad feeling.
id HOPE (/naive) cooperation and shared sacrifice would take precedence over boardroom dick measuring contests.

My apologies. Not trying to make any moral judgments. Clearly I think a Chapter 11 reorganization is the best of shitty alternatives, but that is based on the current state of affairs, not some delusional idea of who is “right or wrong”.
Truthfully, GM is where it is at now because of knuckle-headed management and labor decisions made in the past based upon completely unreasonable expectations for future growth (sound familiar). Unfortunately now is when the tough decisions have to be made. Remember, bond holders already appreciably lost all their investment in the bailout and shareholders have been getting screwed for years. Admittedly though, it does appear that managment has walked away without sacrificing.
September 11th, 2012 at 11:43 AM

While perhaps handing out high salaries and pensions might have been lacking in foresight, the company’s decision to keep making shitty vehicles with shitty safety records and shitty gas mileage also bit them in the ass quite hard.
September 11th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
JMac, do you even read these links you post? I thought 2008 was the “most racially polarizing election ever” A radical right-winger throws peanuts at the RNC, how many radical left-wingers would Obama quickly distance himself from that attended the DNC? We need to stop dealing with the outliers of each party as if they are a true representation of the values of that party.
September 11th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
What I haven’t seen here from our free market, right-wing, Romney experts are two things:
- does the free market also justify paying top executives high 8 or 9 figure salaries + options, even if company performance is horrible, and wages for the regular workers are frozen?
- regarding the race-baiting, have you listened to Ted Nugent or Hank Williams Jr lately? We don’t even have to mention Limbaugh or the manliest of them all Ann Coulter
