Mark Texeira Questions Umpire’s Integrity After Bad Call at First: No Whine as Fine as Yankees Whine
The world’s tiniest violins are playing for the Yankees this morning. Umpire Jerry Meals called Texeira out on a head first dive into first that ended the game with a runner on third, with Baltimore winning 5-4. He was clearly safe. Breaking: sometimes there are bad calls in baseball. Sometimes those bad calls come in the ninth inning. Sometimes the runner is Jorge Orta. Sometimes, the gods of baseball frown upon a head first dive into first. It happens.
The Yankees, though, now find themselves in a tie with Baltimore again for the Eastern Division. Thus, you get whack job conspiracy theories. Mark Texeira said:
Sometimes you wonder if the umpires are just trying to get out of there. They don’t want you to make a comeback. They want to go home because those were terrible calls.
Texeira had previously been called out on strikes in the 8th inning and argued the call. He went on to add:
“I’m probably going to get fined,” Teixeira said. “But I don’t care, really. I’m out there fighting. We are out there fighting. When you are battling like we are battling and they can’t get a call right, that pisses you off. It really does.”
Russell Martin added: “I didn’t feel we lost the game, I feel we got cheated out of it. Once again, it is part of the game of baseball. Umpires are human. They are going to make mistakes.”
Nice of Martin and Texeira to both add those disclaimers, and according to the official game records, the Yankees lost. If they don’t win the division, it will be because of a lot more than one call in one game.

Why slide into 1st when the throw wasn’t wild?
Tex made the umpire’s call harder by doing just that

If the O’s 1b had any integrity, he would have spiked Tex’s hand.
/Never slide into first base.

Jerry Meals isn’t exactly known for his accuracy late in games

And Tex sliding into the bag instead of running through it fit the bill.

Smacks of a typical New Yorker who can’t handle someone else playing well.
Of course, with no Markakis, the O’s are going to need some extra mirrors for the last 3 weeks.

The Human Element.
Tex can gobble a dick. As an Os fan still haunted by Jeffrey Meier, his sad conspiracy theories hold no water.

exactly. sliding actually slows you down (though it does show 110% effort!) and doesn’t provide the umpires to use all his senses (hearing) on a bang-bang play.
your own stupidity, Tex. and maybe it’s a bit of karma for ditching your hometown in free agency.

This.
And fuck the Yankees.

Slide into first, do somersaults into first, run backwards for all I care – safe is safe. Get the call right, ump.
/the O’s are my favorite AL team

Jerry Meals again HAH

I scream this at my television every time I see it. Where are the college/minor-league coaches discouraging this practice? Why are guys still doing it?

Seems like the easiest way to explain this to people is that you don’t see 100m sprinter slide at the end for a reason…more than sacrifice bunting before the 8th inning this bugs me more than anything in the sport

The nerve of Tex being pissed because the ump blew an obvious call. Whatever, that’s done with. It’s good to see the Orioles on their once every 15 years relevancy plan. It’s also good to see your team in the postseason race in September, right Red Sox fans? Royals fans?

I’m an O’s fan, so I’m obviously horribly biased, but fuck the Yankees. They get the benefit of calls constantly, so pardon me if I don’t give a shit. Fuck Tex, and fuck the Yankees.
That sounds like it was written by a 12-year old, good work, me.
