Stephen Strasburg Has Been Shut Down For The Season
The Washington Nationals have shut down Stephen Strasburg for the season, after he allowed five runs in three innings against the Marlins last night. His final start was expected to be Wednesday against the Mets.
Strasburg will finish with a 15-6 record, a 3.16 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP in 159 1/3 innings. The Nationals currently have a 6.5 game lead in the NL East and the best run differential in baseball.
We didn’t become a Nationals fan three years ago, so obviously we can’t say anything intelligent about this team. We believe, though, that this was absolutely the correct decision. Strasburg will have many more chances to throw in October over the course of his career, for the Yankees or the Dodgers.

wah wah wah. He’s a Scott Boras client. There’s no way in hell that Bor-ass will let his cashcow stay in Washington even if they are a perennial contender. It’s a shame he has that cockgobbler for an agent

The Nationals should be ashamed and their fans should abandon ship. WHat a waste of fan money this year to see them tank the playoffs.

Thats also a stupid comment. Perhaps you havent watched Nationals baseball. strasburg hasnt been their best pitcher all year. They can still win without him. If you think they are tanking the playoffs, just shut up and comment on things you know about

A blown-out elbow next spring training is inevitable.

Baldwin is a bit of a nut but I appreciated his takedown on Hank Williams Jr. “If Hank Williams Jr wasn’t such a pathetic, wheezing fossil, I’d have a talk with him… I think we need to call Hank Williams Jr what he is….A broken-down, senile, racist coot.”

Please explain this. The Nationals are a friendly organization to Boras, the ownership has money to spend, and the D.C. area is a huge media market. Why would Boras be opposed to Strasburg staying in Washington?

What a classless post.

bfr – care to elaborate?
(fwiw, i completely agree with the post. Strasburg is gone when his contract is up.)

Strasburg is gone when his contract is up.
You might be right but why do you think that? It’s not like the Nationals are unable/scared to spend.

stark,
if Boras put up this much stink about Rizzo and the Nats shutting him down while the team is in a playoff push, he might hesitate to advise his client on staying with that organization. As much as Boras pushes for his clients to get the maximum value, he will tell a team to shove it if he feels his client has been wronged in some way

He was pushing for the Nationals to do exactly what they did. He wanted Strasburg to be shut down.
September 8th, 2012 at 4:31 PM
AP, I’ll make sure to remind you when the Nats exit in their first series that they didn’t offer their fans their best team. It’s just a fact. I hope the franchise never makes the playoffs again.
Also, Boras pushed for this shut down. Sad when Rizzo is his pawn.

That’s not what was reported a few weeks ago. I’ll take your word for it.
September 8th, 2012 at 4:34 PM
Your argument is based on assumptions while ignoring the quality and depth of the team.
September 8th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
Pitching wins playoff games. Stras is their most talented pitcher. You take him out, you are throwing a guy out there for a game or two every series unworthy of holding his jock. Unless you really trust in Detweiler. Also it’s a very young team and very little to no playoff experience. Sometimes those teams can be dangerous but more often than not, they fade in the spotlight. This move makes that more likely to happen.

Boras chimed in a few weeks ago when there was chatter that the Nats might not shut down Strasburg after all. He’s never once said they should let him keep pitching.
September 8th, 2012 at 4:45 PM
FlyingElbow, Detweiler is not going to be taking Strasburg’s postseason starts. The 3-man for the postseason is Gio, Zimmermann, Edwin Jackson. That’s better than almost anybody they’d face even without Strasburg
September 8th, 2012 at 5:03 PM
Stark, on paper I would tend to agree. I would put them and the Reds top 3 as equals with the Giants being slightly better. However, as I said before, I just don’t trust inexperience come playoff time. Has Gio started a playoff game? I can’t recall.

He did a takedown of Leo Mazzone’s opinion a few years ago by reminding the host of his client, Steve Avery. He supported the Nats decision.
September 8th, 2012 at 7:18 PM
Dang. Maybe so, but do we have to talk about it now?
Seriously, he has had some command issues lately. Last night, he threw hard, but had trouble locating his fastball. The Marlins had their way with him.
I would like to see Strasburg stay. They are finally starting to build something that might last. Why leave?
September 8th, 2012 at 9:21 PM
I can see Strasburg staying. Washington is a pretty big market whose fans support their team and ownership seems willing to spend. Unless they go in the pits or Strasburg has a resounding urge to play somewhere else, I think he stays.
September 9th, 2012 at 12:10 AM
I’m pretty certain if Strasburg had to decide today, he would stay in Washington. A great team in a big market, with management that puts his health above all else. That’s where I’d want to play.
