College Football 2012 Picks: Week Two, Missouri Will Make Strong Opening Statement to SEC
We had a rough first week, going 2-4. We will blame Connor Shaw’s injury and Michigan State nearly Notre Daming a strong performance against Boise State with turnovers. Hopefully, we will rebound this week.
Missouri (+2.5) vs. Georgia: The public money is coming in hard on Georgia. Oddsmakers have pushed the line to goad even more of it. This is a tough away trip for the Dawgs. Their depleted defense looked poor against Buffalo and now becomes the conference’s first guinea pig against Missouri’s no-huddle spread.
Connecticut (+4.5) vs. N.C. State: Connecticut should be a surprise team in the Big East this year. They got an upgrade at quarterback with transfer Chandler Whitmer. They have nine starters back for a defense that assassinated UMass last week, shutting them out and holding them to just 59 total yards. Getting points against a middling ACC team at home? We’ll take it and one of these badass t-shirts.
Purdue (+14) at Notre Dame: Notre Dame beat down Navy. Purdue is not Navy. The Boilermakers have a strong defensive front that can slow down Notre Dame’s running game. They have a passing game that can challenge a thin Irish secondary.
UCLA (+6) vs. Nebraska: Taylor Martinez may have improved as a passer, but he’s not going to throw five touchdowns and average 10-plus yards per attempt every week. The Cornhuskers travel across the country with a beaten up running game. The Bruins have a talented squad that was underutilized by the Neuheisel regime.
Akron (+24) at FIU: Akron does one thing decently, throw the ball. FIU got torched through the air by Duke last week. Yes, Duke, the team that had not beaten an FBS team in its opener since 2002. Duke senior Conner Vernon looked like a Heisman candidate 10 catches for 180 yards and two touchdowns.
Northwestern (+3.5) vs. Vanderbilt: South Carolina played terribly, could not pass with an injured quarterback and still ran the ball quite effectively against Vandy. Northwestern presents a more multi-faceted ground attack and does not make mistakes. Like where Franklin has Vanderbilt heading. Not sure they are ready to pick off BCS non-conference teams on the road.

For people who hate ESPN and/or are PSU fans. Go down to the Jacksonville/Vikings game and read Walter Football’s thoughts on the PSU scandal. I would copy and past it but it’s way too long.

FIU might be the best team in Florida outside of Tallahassee.
/half kidding

I love it when bloggers have columns or do picks and refer to themselves as a standalone entity, like Duffy referring to himself as “we” or Forde referring to himself as The Dash in his columns. I guess words like “I” and “me” are outdated.

I think the Tigers will win this week.

That explosive Akron passing attack threw up a whole 14 points against UCF at home last week. Jump on that bandwagon.

Missouri (+2.5) vs. Georgia
Can’t wait for Saturday night. I’ll be in their in some sort of capacity, not a sober one though.

Going to be funny when the Big 12 schools go 2-0 in their SEC debuts this weekend.

No they don’t, UCLA is terrible.

Bartender; cut him off now!
No need for that, I’m just an idiot who is way to excited for Saturday.

Is this site functional now?
Heading down to Charlottesville this weekend with friends. Looking forward to the game.
/tempted to take PSU +10.5
//worried that my loyalty is blinding me relative to that line

The Bruins have a talented natural recruiting base that was underutilized by the Neuheisel regime.
Is that more what you were going for?

Don’t like the Mizzou/Dawgs game at all. Think UGA whacks them, but the missing players and night game and fired up crowds make me think the other way. Then, I remember that it’s still Mizzou. Regardless, staying away.
UConn is a sleeper here. Not a bad pick.
Ditto with Purdue. They are a decent football team. And ND is just decent themselves. I think the Irish win… close.
I think Nebraska rapes and pillages UCLA, although not having Burkhead scares me some, so I’ll modify to Neb COVERS against UCLA. Regardless, UCLA is still not good, regardless of what they did in week 1.
I wouldn’t touch Akron with a 39 1/2 foot pole. 24 is too much to give though, so I wouldn’t touch.
NW scares me to death. They looked awesome for 3 quarters against Syracuse, then it all fell apart. Sounds similar to 2011. Vandy is better, but I think NW wins outright.

Have you been? Its a pretty sweet town, on my short list of places I’d live. Not far from DC, but still small town-like. Reminds me a lot of state college with less party.
September 6th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
Stay away from that line. After last week, do you have any feel at all for what they will look like this week? I can’t tell which half was the aberration. If neither was and they are somewhere in the middle, then it will not be good going forward.

Definitely go tour Monticello, sweet view.
/I’m betting PSU
//fuck it

A man much smarter than I (at least in regards to football picks) has 3 picks for the weekend:
Nebraska -5.5 (best of the 3, slightly)
USC -26 (solid bet)
Virginia -10 (worst of the 3, slightly)
Last week, the same man went 2-0 (with OSU and Hawaii). TFWIW

The score line looked awesome but Northwestern certainly didn’t. This is how Northwestern scored their first 28 points. Punt return TD, punt return to the 30 (TD), INT to the 20 (TD), Cuse throws a backwards lateral that they drop and Northwetsern runs it in. Cuse had 200 more yards than Northwestern and outgained them by 100 in the first half.
NW will have hard time stopping Vandy seeing as they couldn’t stop a pedestrian Syracuse offense. That screams stay away.
I am in love with K-State minus 7 at home against Miami. That looks like 42-17. BC giftwrapped that game for The U last week and Rettig threw for over 450. What’s Collin Klein going to do to them?
September 6th, 2012 at 7:14 PM
It’s entirely plausible that Duffy will go 0-6 in those games.
