Michigan’s Loss to Alabama Impact is Being Overstated
Michigan looked awful against Alabama last Saturday, joining pretty much every team that has played Alabama since 2009. Poll voters downgraded the Wolverines. Spartan players, many of whom got blown out 49-7 by the Tide in 2010, were gleeful on twitter. Viewing it soberly, though, this loss says little about how Michigan will fare moving forward.
The Wolverines looked horrendous. Alabama does that to everyone, including really good SEC teams. Arkansas went 11-2 last year, finished in the AP Top Five, and finished 14th in yards per play offense. How did they fare against the Crimson Tide? About as well as Michigan did.
Arkansas entered the game as 13-point underdogs. The Razorbacks lost 38-14. They managed just 17 rushing yards on 19 attempts (averaged 4.5 yards per carry against other opponents). They were held to just 5.2 yards per pass attempt (averaged 8.6 against other opponents). Michigan averaged 2.4 yards per carry and 7.4 yards per pass attempt. Will Michigan be 2011 Arkansas good? It would be bullish to predict that, but an inept performance against Alabama says little. The Tide really are that good.
Here’s a breakdown of Michigan’s schedule, based roughly on estimated lines. These certainly will move, but in general Michigan Win = 7-point or more favorite or more, Michigan Edge = 7-point or less favorite and vice versa for opponents.
Michigan Win: Air Force, UMass, Illinois, at Purdue, at Minnesota, Northwestern, Iowa
Michigan Edge: Michigan State
Opponent Edge: at Notre Dame, at Nebraska, at Ohio State
Opponent Win: Alabama
If the Wolverines win every game where they are a touchdown or more favorite, that puts them at 7-1. The other four games give them a range between 7-5 and 11-1. None of the four games will be easy, but all of the four are winnable. Beating Michigan State and Nebraska would almost undoubtedly get them to the Big Ten title game, even if it is at 9-3. Their ceiling is winning the Big Ten outside national title contention, what it was realistically before taking the field against Alabama.
Michigan won’t be as lucky on turnovers this year. They should, however, show improvement in a second year after radical system changes on both sides of the ball. Denard Robinson must cut down the interceptions. In most games he won’t be forced to throw in a collapsing pocket against corners athletic enough to shove the receiver out of bounds as the ball is released and recover to grab the interception.
2012 may be a reality check for Michigan, but it is against Notre Dame, Michigan State, Nebraska and Ohio State where we’ll find that out, not Alabama. The Wolverines’ most significant fallout from that game may be trying to replace Blake Countess.

im not going to lie…i had terrible, terrible flashbacks to florida’s DE’s running circles around OSU’s highly recruited OL in the NC game that ended at the same score of 41-14 watching michigan/bama…

No. No. No. Doubt it. No. No. Nein. No.
However they might have the same record as, and play in a superior bowl game than 2011 Arkansas. Mostly because Michigan doesn’t have to play in the SEC West.

Alabama is just really, really fucking good. Just check out the SMQ piece on the game which had an excellent breakdown on how bad Bama has been beating fools.

With Bellamy or whatever his name is?
Their 3rd best player and anchor of that vaunted secondary.

I fucking hate Alabama. Fuck. Sometimes I wish Arkansas had a rival so I could take out some of my hate there; but right now I can’t think of a team I’d want to win the title this year less than Bama. Maybe MSU.
September 5th, 2012 at 2:39 PM
except in the mind of delusional hog fans (is there any other type?) Arkansas wasn’t that good.
September 5th, 2012 at 2:40 PM
id be fairly interested to see what alabama would do on defense against a team like oregon or oklahoma state.
last year okie state with weeden would’ve been a great matchup since fakeOSU could exploit the sidelines and deep seams.
September 5th, 2012 at 2:40 PM
I don’t have time to read this…but is the point that Michigan and Arkansas are like the same?
Congratulations, Michigan.

Kind of like what Arkansas could also do last year?
September 5th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
LSU/Oregon last year is probably a good measuring stick of that.
September 5th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
yea, but weeden was better than wilson last year and blackmon and josh cooper were there too. plus, their tempo causes fits while arkansas isn’t as breakneck. also, packaged plays.
they’re two different offenses…i think okie state’s tempo and faster developing routes wouldve been a tougher match than arkansas’ pro-style offense.
September 5th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
so since Michigan fans are clearly as delusional, if not more than Hog fans, we are on the same level right?

September 5th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
alabama doesn’t have as much stupid speed as LSU, they rely more on power and scheme…and a 3-4 is a diff beast than LSU’s nebulous 4-man front.
September 5th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
Purdue could be a trap game for Michigan as well.
September 5th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
they are a better team! they will just win less games!
September 5th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
Maybe. But I think that’s only good for another TD. I still think Bama, especially if given a lot of time to prepare, would be double-digit favorites.
September 5th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
That loss to Appy State wasn’t that bad either
September 5th, 2012 at 2:46 PM
This feels weird, as I grew up a Michigan fan, but…
Last year Arkansas finished the season ranked #5, with their only losses coming to teams that played in the National Championship game. If I’m not mistaken, the last time Michigan was ranked that high at any point, the next thing they did was go out and lose to a 1aa school at home.
September 5th, 2012 at 2:47 PM
kind of hard to compare anything that Arkansas or Tyler Wilson did last year is tough because of the complete lack of running game Arkansas has because of the Davis injury though.
September 5th, 2012 at 2:47 PM
I understand Michigan fans talking themselves off the ledge. Bama looks like a juggernaut right now. But how can you not be concerned with a) the play of both lines and b) the fact that ol’ Shoelace hasnt improved at all in the past 2 years?
September 5th, 2012 at 2:47 PM
The game serves as a bit of an indictment against Michigan – it shows that they have a ways to go before they are a relevant program again. Last year they caught every imaginable break. You touched on turnovers, but forgot ND choking and giving up jump balls to UM, the worst-coached OSU team in a long time, missing Wisconsin, VT dominating the bowl game yet somehow losing.

September 5th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
yea, that’s the problem…sure, you find ways to attack their defense, but then you have to deal with that BEASTLY OL and a stable of 5-star RB’s taking the clock and humping it into submission.

oklahoma state hardly had a great rushing attack last year. 21 yards per game more than arkansas state in about the same number of attempts in a conference that’s hardly loaded with great run defenses.

Do you really want old man Weeden with his finger on the button?

I’ve heard good things about Gameday Cloth. I’ve never bought anything from them though so I don’t have any first hand experience.

dude was mawney in college and i think he’s going to be half decent here. if he had any help from a raw WR corps and inconsistent OL (how can you look so beast against GB and so shitty against detroit and philly?), he’d look a LOT better in the preseason. im bullish.
September 5th, 2012 at 2:54 PM
I think Okie State was a product of their conference as much as anything else. They’d put up 14-17 pts on last year’s Bama team, and lost 42-17.

surprisingly, the only bit of joy i took in seeing michigan get pasted like that was seeing jordan kovacs get his ass run the fuck over near the goalline. aside from that…the only other emotion i experience was pure, unadulterated fear of alabama next year.

September 5th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
agreed, but Arkansas’s pro-style offense is supposed to have a decent RB to help offset the passing, which they didn’t have. like I said, in hindsight I don’t think Arkansas would have hung with either team, but they result could have been different with a RB that could at least attempt to find a hole to run through.

After Mich wins the b1g, this loss will be re-overstated as we listen to the cries of “but that was 3 1/2 months ago!”.

It was the UNIFORMS!
September 5th, 2012 at 4:42 PM
Michigan has no offensive line. Has no defensive line. Has a now banged up secondary. Has a running back for a quarterback.
They won 2-3 games last year with mirrors. 7-5 or 8-4 seems like the spot for them.
Alabama wasn’t exactly without holes either. Alabama’s defense was solid, but there were a ton of open guys in the secondary for someone who could throw. McCarron still looks like a guy who can’t throw straight. Of course, he may not need to with those running backs. The play calling inside the 30 was questionable, which plagued them last year against good teams.
