NCAA Ruling on North Carolina Academic Scandal Was to Protect the Basketball Program, Right?
The NCAA quietly rendered a decision on the North Carolina academic scandal late Friday, hours before the holiday weekend. How timely!: Nothing nefarious went down, no rules were broken. Of course! Smoke everywhere, but the inept NCAA once again could find nothing. You know what this explanation sounds like? The NCAA throwing up a signal for help to anyone who is interested:
Based on the joint review, UNC and the NCAA staff concluded there were no violations of current NCAA rules or student-athlete eligibility issues related to courses in African and Afro-American Studies. As a result, the NCAA did not add any allegations or include this issue during the University’s appearance in October 2011 before the Committee on Infractions.
Hey, we can’t do our jobs, but if any of you investigative reporters want to poke around and see what you can find, great. But the NCAA’s ruling doesn’t close the case on this situation, obviously. Certainly more will come out. One of the best conspiracy theories on why the NCAA made the decision it did – remember, the football team had previously been slapped down; maybe the NCAA thought that was enough? – is to protect the storied basketball team. After all, UNC hoops is one of the marquee teams in the sport (maybe No. 1?), and to damage the program would mean to put a dent in the NCAA’s wallet:
If the intent of the no-show classes and independent studies were to keep athletes eligible, the university could face major sanctions that could potentially bring down championship banners for its men’s basketball team. The team won the NCAA tournament in 2005 and 2009.
Basketball is where the NCAA makes the lion share of its revenues. A nonprofit association, its most recently available tax return on Guidestar.org shows nearly all of its $740 million in revenues came from the nationally-televised basketball tournament.
Hence, there is concern that what happened Friday was the NCAA protecting a celebrated, lucrative basketball program.
Football star Julius Peppers played for the basketball team too – just not during his final year, you know, when he took all those AFAM classes. [News & Observer]

So does this mean that your “investigation” is complete or will you still carry the torch?

Haven’t we seen this story on here before? Like 4 or 5 times before? Guess you be getting that Pulitzer with this story Jason.

A few hoops programs (UNC, Duke, Michigan St) will “never” go down to infractions. Even if murders are directly involved, these teams won’t be treated like the Baylors and Memphises of D-1.

What is that quote from?

The second quote, I mean. Is it from one the links?

What an absolute fucking joke. The NCAA can claim super-secret extra-special jurisdiction to hop on the Freeh Report and hammer Penn State (however deserving PSU was), but can’t find a way to issue sanctions in what may well be the largest academic fraud case (in terms of numbers of students and length of time) in the history of major college athletics? I call bullshit. This type of behavior makes me glad I work at an NAIA institution–because the NCAA has no integrity whatsoever. I guess if Mark Emmert can’t stand in front of a podium and make his serious frowny face about larger social issues, then he’s not interested in doing anything serious. Frauds, the lot of them.

You don’t get to praise the ncaa for its pathetic pr stunt punishment against Penn State then complain about this. If the ncaa can do whatever it wants without rules or evidence – which is what you advocated – then that door swings both ways.

My “you” wasn’t directed at you Prof.

Jason – now that the UNC situation has slowed down, maybe you can take some time to talk about the three recruits at UCLA who my be ineligible. Or Purvis at NC State. Or Nerlens Noel (the last piece you did left out some stuff and a critical link) at Kentucky. Funny how Roy stops recruiting players without so much as a reason, and then months later they have eligibility issues. If your “UNC cheats” narrative held true, wouldn’t he have landed some of these players who are more than likely getting improper benefits?

Or how a graduate student who allegedly took and passed 12 credit hours with a 3.4 GPA this past summer, ends up suspended by the NCAA for academics.

Hi Roger – Yes, we have written about UCLA. Last September. Before anyone else did. Before they even landed their best recruits.

Nats up 8-1 in the fif. Four taters already. The team has hit four homers in a game three times this year – 4th of July, 4th of August and 4th of September.

Errr..no excuse for it not to be jam packed.
And on topic, im not sure if the UNC deal was to protect Roy’s boys but JMac makes a solid argument

With the Red Sox a dumpster fire, I am rooting for whoever plays the Yankees

Over the years, the NCAA has been pretty capricious. Some schools get hammered, some get a slap on the wrist, some get tucked in at night.

Roeth – no problem. Both leagues have really good numbers. Should be interesting
September 4th, 2012 at 9:24 PM
I want in on the leagues, where do they do them at? What site, I mean?
SROD, I’m with you, no way in hell certain basketball schools get touched, that’s the bread and butter, which is why I’m shocked (SHOCKED) that the NCAA hasn’t gone with the playoffs in FB, unless there is more money through the bowls. I’m not that smart, so I don’t know how they do it, but I know they are getting PAID one way or the other. If I could figure out how they do it, I probably wouldn’t be dicking around here.

My friends are going bananas but I look at the calendar and see a hell of a lot of crucial games remaining, including four with NY this weekend and a season ender with Tampa Bay. I’m optimistic but have a sinking feeling they got hot a few weeks too early. Right now, I’m just going to ride it out and hope for the best.
