Old Navy is Selling a 1961 Houston Texans Championship Shirt
Old Navy has something called the NFL Team Champions Collection that they are selling online. Some teams have a more storied history of championships than others, but they apparently didn’t want to leave anyone out. The Houston Texans, for example, just became a franchise in 2002, and made the playoffs last season for the first time in their history.
Old Navy, though, is giving them the 1961 AFC Championship. The Houston Oilers, who according to the official league records became the Tennessee Titans, with all records going with them, did win the 1960 and 1961 AFL Championships. (There was no AFC back then). The AFC/NFC thing caused multiple problems for Old Navy. The Cleveland Browns are identified as 1964 NFC Champions, along with the 1957 Detroit Lions. The 1969 Kansas Chiefs and 1968 New York Jets are also identified as NFL Champions, even though they were not members of the league at that time. So basically about 20% of the shirts are historically inaccurate, but none worse than giving a franchise that wouldn’t exist for 40 years a title.

This is what happens when companies try to hard to be a part of something popular.
Some executive heard on ESPN reported by ESPN that ESPN’s worth has increased dramatically since they aligned themselves with the NFL.
So Old Navy put some fashion person, who knows nothing about the sport or sports in general, in charge of NFL ware.
This is the result.
Also, in 1961 the ‘Texans’ resided in Dallas and later became the Kansas City Chiefs.
